For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been in the middle. I’m the middle child in my family. I’ve always sat in the middle of the classroom at school. Even my first and last names, Miguel Martinez, start with an M — the middle letter of the alphabet. Luckily, I’m also in the middle of a large circle of friends.
However, starting middle school in September brought me a painful change. All of my closest friends went to a different middle school leaving me alone. The only classmate I know from my old school is Jake, who is good at math. But since it’s not my favorite subject, we never became friends.
By the end of October, Jake and I became good friends. It happened because I was so hopeless when trying to do my math homework. I hated math — especially fractions (分数). So, one day, I turned to Jake after school. To my surprise, Jake not only knew my name but was also willing to help me.
That night, Jake and I studied math together. He used pieces of a pizza to explain fractions, and by the end of the night, I finally understood!
The next day in class, I was even able to answer one of the math problems. My math teacher was surprised when I raised my hand, and guess what — so was I!
The other day, our math teacher gave us a math brainteaser (谜题). She asked, “If you were to write all the numbers from one to one hundred, how many times would you write a nine?” The question was harder than it seemed.
All of our classmates were wrong. Jake and I were the only ones with the correct answer! After that, more and more classmates wanted to study math with us.
Jake and I plan to hang out together during winter break. It won’t just be the two of us, since all my new friends from middle school will go with us to the Math Museum downtown. Though I now see math differently, some things haven’t changed. I’m still in the middle of a large circle of friends!
24. How did Miguel feel when he started middle school?
A. Lucky. B. Surprised. C. Lonely. D. Tired.
25. The underlined word “hang out” in the last paragraph probably means _________.
A. to help each other and work together to achieve a goal
B. to spend a lot of time in a place or with particular people
C. to move slowly or take too long doing sth.
D. to hold sth. tightly
26. Miguel changed his attitude towards math because _________.
A. his teacher taught him math with a pizza B. he won first prize in the math competition
C. his friends advised him to do more exercises D. Jake helped him to get better at it
27. At the end of the story, Miguel _________.
A. finds pleasure in different subjects B. solves his problems at the Math Museum
C. enjoys the company of his new friends D. plans to go abroad during winter break
C
Why go to all the trouble of building a drone (无人机) if nature has already done the job for you? That is the attitude taken by researchers who are trying to robotise insects. Some are working on turning flying insects into cyborgs (机械化有机体) . Others prefer to focus on some small insects, by taking electronic control of cockroaches.
The first cyber-roach (半机械蟑螂) goes back to 1997, when Shimoyama Isao of Tokyo University sent electrical signals to a cockroach’s antennae, causing it to turn either left or right depending on which antenna was stimulated (刺激) . Others have built on this method by using other parts of their bodies. They have also begun fitting the insects with instrument packs that might let them do a useful job: searching destroyed buildings for survivors (幸存者) .
One such is Sato Hirotaka of Nanyang Technological University, in Singapore. He has been working on cyber-insects for 15 years. Now. he has made another change to cyber-roaches. Instead of having their movements operated by a controller, his are run by computer programmes that react directly to build-in sensors in their backpacks. The backpacks contain a communications chip, a CO2 sensor, a motion sensor, a camera and a tiny battery.
For search-and-save operations in destroyed buildings, groups of these cyber- roaches would be sent into the remains, to search for signs of life such as movement and high CO2 levels from breathing. The AI that decides whether a set of signals actually show the presence of a human being is programmed directly into the camera. If it thinks it has spotted someone, it warns saviors.
To test this, Dr Sato and his team ran trials in a man-made disaster zone. They laid out pieces of destroyed buildings in different shapes and sizes in an area of 25m2. There were several people among them, as well as things that can mislead the cyber-roaches. After programming the start and finish points of the search, they sent the cyber-roaches out. It is proved that they are able to recognise humans correctly 87% of the time, a success number Dr Sato thinks could be improved still further by collecting many images from different sides.
The next step of the project is to improve the system for outdoors use. That done, products of the backpacks will be put into markets within five years.
28. What can we learn about Dr Sato’s cyber-roaches?
A. They are run by computer programmes. B. They are operated by a controller.
C. They can do more jobs than drones. D. They use antennae to receive signals.
29. How did Dr Sato test his cyber- roaches?
A. He stimulated the cockroaches’ antennae.
B. He programmed the chips in the cockroaches’ bodies.
C. He sent them to the man-made remains to search for life.
D. He set the start and finish points to mislead the cockroaches.
30. According to the passage, what does Dr Sato’s think of cyber-roaches?
A. Cockroaches are proved to be future saviors.
B. They will be widely used outdoors within five years.
C. Cockroaches follow instructions better than other insects.
D. They can recognise lives better by collecting more images

Advertisers often use special techniques to get consumers (消费者) to buy products, services and ideas. Very often, we are persuaded (劝说) to buy a product or service because of what we see on the television, hear on the radio, or read on social media.
Advertising has encouraged the shift from needs-based to wants-based production. Advertising techniques that get consumers to buy more to get greater discount (折扣), often attract consumers to buy what they do not need to enjoy more benefits. For one, tech companies are constantly producing new products and their advertisements highlight the positive features of the latest models, persuading consumers to throw away their old devices and buy new ones. Similarly, advertising keeps on promoting new trends and styles, encouraging people to discard their out-of-fashion items for trendier ones.
Advertising also encourages an addictive behaviour that results in repetitive buying. To persuade buyers to repeat their purchase (购买), companies often use some attractive methods such as limited-time discounts. Buyers who do not want to miss out on a good deal, would buy again even if they have no need for the product.
Some may argue that advertising can play an important role in persuading people towards lasting living, and leading a less wasteful lifestyle, such as in the case of advertising second-hand clothes. Advertising has also successfully changed buyers’ opinions of second- hand clothes as “cheap” and “dirty”, promoting them as eco-friendly and stylish. However, the promise of companies towards sustainability (可持续发展) remains low. Advertising is still the main tool for companies to promote their brands, and ultimately make more money.
Still, many believe that effective advertising is the key driving force that enables mass-produced products to be sold quickly, with even social media sales relying heavily on persuasive techniques to attract the users of social media. However, some people believe that FOMO (fear of missing out) is an even more powerful force to persuade buyers to spend on things they do not need. It is FOMO that persuades people to join a long line to buy something they probably have no need for, based on social media posts of purchases that friends have made.
Nowadays, people are spending more on things they do not need. However, advertising does not necessarily result in us being more wasteful. It is a matter of personal choice. After all, there is just so much we can eat, wear or use. Although advertisements may appear in front of us anytime and anywhere, we should need to correctly tell the differences between what we need and what we want. Just keep a clear mind.
31. How has advertising encouraged the shift from needs-based to wants-based production?
A. By increasing the amount of advertising.
B. By highlighting the price of the latest products.
C. By providing more attractions to the consumers.
D. By telling companies to throw away out-of-fashion products.
32. The underlined word “addictive” in Paragraph 3 probably means “making people _________ something”
A. interested in trying B. unable to stop doing
C. worried about missing D. happy to throw away
33. The writer probably agrees that _________.
A. the misleading of advertising is the main reason for more waste
B. advertising fails to change buyers’ opinions about second-hand items
C. social media has more powerful force to persuade buyers than FOMO
D. FOMO can lead people to buy something that they might have no need for
34. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To introduce some useful advertising techniques.
B. To discuss the advantages and disadvantages of advertising.
C. To explain why advertising brings buyers a wasteful lifestyle.
D. To advise people to make right choices when facing advertisements.

In the 1994 film Forrest Gump, there’s a famous saying, “Life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re gonna get.” The surprise is part of the fun. Now blind box toys are bringing the magic of surprise to online shopping.
A blind box toy is hidden inside some common package, which cannot be seen from the outside. You don’t know what will be inside exactly, although the toys mostly come from pop culture, ranging from movies to cartoons.
Blind boxes have caught on since they were first introduced from Japan to China in 2014. According to a 2019 Tmall report, the mini-series of Labubu blind box was named Champion of Unit Sales with 55, 000 sold in just 9 seconds during the Singles Day shopping event. Most customers for blind boxes are young people aged 18 to 35.
According to The Paper, blind box toys are popular in part because of their cute appearances. The cute cartoon figurines (公仔, 手办) come in small sizes, making them suitable to be presented on shelves.
Even if blind boxes are not their top choice for decorations, the mystery and uncertainty of the process also attracts people. It’s the most important reason why people buy blind boxes one after another.
“Fear of the unknown is always a part of the box-opening process,” said Miss Cao, 24, who lives and works in Shenyang. Speaking to Sina News, she said, “Until you open all the boxes, you cannot know what it is inside.”
However, someone gives a different voice. “With blind boxes, I never know exactly what I’ll get. I would feel disappointed if I didn’t get what I was hoping for or got the same one I already have, which was also a waste of money,” said Matthew, 18, who studies in a senior high school.
Love it or hate it, opening a blind box is a little surprise for our daily lives. When people open this simple little box, they may be disappointed, but they always hope for a better result.
When someone remakes Forrest Gump, don’t be surprised if he says, “Life is like a blind box…”
