The postal service was set up very early in ancient
China, but at that time it was hardly used in daily life. The
ancient postal service mainly served the government for the
delivery(递送) of letters and official documents.
12
China’s postal system dates back to more than 3,000
years ago. According to historical records of the Spring and
Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, there were
three ways of sending messages: On foot, by carriage(马车)
and on horseback. In the Qin and Han Dynasties, the postal
system developed quite completely. The documents that
needed to be delivered were divided into different grades
and sent by special persons and horses. By the Sui and
Tang Dynasties, the scale(规模) of postal service was very
large. There was a post station about every 30 li along the
postal route(邮路). The station was a place for people to
rest and eat.
At that time, horseback riding was a more common way
of transportation. The usual speed at which a courier(信使)
delivered documents on horseback was 300 li a day. If the
documents were urgent, the courier would speed up,
traveling 400 to 600 li a day.
You must have heard of “Eight-hundred-li urgent”,
which means the courier had to travel 800 li every day.
Usually, every courier who delivered such urgent documents
had a yellow flag tied around his waist(腰部).#6

Barefoot(赤脚) walking has a long history and we
can’t say it was started by just one person. In 2009,
Christopher McDougall published the book Born to Run,
which tells the story of the Tarahumara people in Mexico
21
who run long distances(距离) barefoot. George Woodville
is called “Barefoot Guy” on social media. He shares his
barefoot experiences with strangers online. Many people liked
his videos and tried walking barefoot.
World Barefoot Day is on the first Saturday of June
every year. This day encourages people to walk without
shoes. The purpose is to make more people know about
poor children who can’t afford shoes. Some groups also start
activities to collect and give away shoes and money.
If you want to try walking barefoot, you can practise at
home or in a safe place. Make sure to check your feet for
cuts after each walk and keep your feet clean.
Walking barefoot can offer surprising health benefits.
Walking without shoes can strengthen the muscles of the feet.
People who run without shoes usually have larger leg and
foot muscles. What’s more, it helps us improve our balance
and posture(体态).
Sure, there are a number of advantages of walking
around barefoot some of the time, but that doesn’t mean
that you should just throw away all of your shoes and go
all natural all the time. And walking barefoot in some
public places may put us at the risk of getting diseases like
athlete’s foot(脚气). Although there are some risks, the
benefits of walking barefoot are really amazing!#1.6
