Tuan Pham, a 47-year-old man, was feeling strong as he approached the 12-mile mark of the Long Beach Half Marathon. It was his seventh race, and he looked forward to celebrating at the finish line with his teenage son, who had run ahead. Suddenly, after taking another step or two, he collapsed, his memory cutting off entirely. He lay motionless on the ground, his heart having stopped completely.
He had no pulse and wasn’t breathing. Three blocked arteries (动脉) had caused a sudden cardiac arrest (心脏骤停) , leaving him clinically dead. According to the American Heart Association, the survival rate for an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is less than 12%. Pham’s situation seemed hopeless, and his only chance relied on a miracle — like a heart doctor happening to be nearby.
At that very moment, Dr. Ryan Chiu, a heart doctor from a nearby hospital, happened to be just a few feet away. He had finished a meal and was leaving a restaurant when his friend asked him to stay a few minutes for the ocean view. This small delay proved to be fateful. Seeing Pham fall, Dr. Chiu rushed over, recognized the emergency, and immediately began performing chest compressions.
Dr. Chiu handled the crisis well. He asked a bystander to continue compressions while calling his hospital to prepare an operating room. Soon, an ambulance took Pham to the hospital, with Dr. Chiu driving behind. The surgery to clear the blocked arteries was a total success. Pham not only survived but fully recovered — he even planned to return to finish the last two miles.
Reflecting on the incredible series of events, Pham was filled with amazement. “I can’t believe the first guy to see me fall and give me help was a cardiac surgeon,” he said. “What are the odds?” It was the perfect timing — a friend’s casual suggestion, the surgeon’s delayed leave, and his immediate presence — that turned a near tragedy into a miraculous survival story.
4. What happened to Tuan Pham during the marathon?
A. He fell and got his leg injured. B. He lost his memory after the race.
C. He suffered a sudden heart failure. D. He felt too tired to finish the last two miles.
5. Why does the author mention “less than 12%” in paragraph 2?
A. To stress the urgency of Pham’s situation. B. To show the commonness of heart diseases.
C. To explain the importance of daily exercise. D. To criticize the slow response of ambulances.
6. What directly caused Dr. Chiu to be at the scene at the right time?
A. He was following the ambulance. B. He was participating in the marathon.
C. A friend asked him to stay to see the view. D. A bystander called him for immediate help.
7. What is the best title for the passage?
A. A Desperate Race. B. A Timely Rescue.
C. A Surgeon’s Quick Aid. D. A Marathon Misfortune.

Facial recognition technology has quickly developed from a futuristic concept to a common identification tool in daily life. From boarding planes and logging into bank accounts to entering residential areas, tech firms and service providers widely promote face-scanning as the most efficient and secure choice, promising a smooth, convenient experience.
Yet this technological convenience has caused strong public debate and serious privacy concerns. Major retailers (零售商) in several countries have been fined for collecting customers’ facial data without clear permission, a practice that deeply damages public trust. The issue becomes more sensitive when it involves children: many schools test the technology for campus entry and cafeteria payments, while social media platforms plan to use it for age confirmation. Notably, some tech companies have been exposed for improperly storing minors’ facial data, a trend that raises alarms about lifelong risks for a generation living under constant digital monitoring.
Beyond unapproved collection, a key worry among experts is the permanence of facial data. Unlike passwords, PINs, or even passports, your face cannot be replaced. Once a facial scan is stored in a database, it remains there indefinitely, creating a permanent digital identity that may be stolen. Such data leaks can lead to harm that cannot be undone, including lifelong identity theft. Furthermore, the technology is still imperfect: recorded cases of misidentification have put innocent people on security watchlists, leading to repeated questioning, while inaccurate age-assessing systems may either restrict teenagers’ access to appropriate online services or expose them to harmful content.
While supporters highlight real benefits — such as faster airport security and assisting police in solving crimes in public spaces — the risks currently outweigh the rewards. We can replace a stolen credit card or passport, but never our faces. Thus, before facial recognition is widely used, governments must introduce strict, clear rules for data collection, storage, and usage. The key question remains: is the promised convenience worth the potential, permanent cost to our privacy and security?
8. Why were some major retailers fined?
A. They used the technology secretly. B. They collected data without approval.
C. They failed to protect children’s data. D. They provided inaccurate age systems.
9. What’s the third paragraph mainly about?
A. The technical flaws of age- assessing systems. B. The permanent damage caused by identity theft.
C. The differences between facial data and passwords. D. The potential risks of facial recognition technology.
10. What can be inferred about facial recognition technology?
A. It is perfectly safe for all users. B. Its benefits clearly outweigh risks.
C. It needs immediate government rules. D. It is widely accepted without concerns.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards facial recognition technology?
A. Opposed and critical. B. Cautious and concerned.
C. Objective and factual. D. Supportive and enthusiastic.

April was the cruelest month. Just as the blossoms arrived, John Bostock found himself struck by “an unusual train of problems” — first “a severe itching (发痒)” around the eyes, then “a running nose”. The “periodical affection” he described in 1819 is now known as hay fever, an allergic reaction where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks harmless pollen (花粉).
Considered rare a few centuries ago, hay fever now affects up to one in five people in most industrialised countries. Although new case growth may be slowing, the suffering season itself is lengthening, extending the annual discomfort for millions.
Two modern drivers fuel this trend. The first is growth of cities. A 2023 study by Ann Gledson from the University of Manchester and her team found people living in cities have much worse seasonal allergy signs. The exact cause is unclear, but poor air quality may either raise pollen’s protein content or deepen people’s immune response.
Another powerful driver, climate change, further complicates the situation. Research conducted by Beverley Adams-Groom of the University of Worcester shows warmer springs in Britain make the main grass-pollen season (usually March to May) start earlier. In fact, some trees now release pollen as early as January. Warmer climates also spread highly allergic (引起过敏症的) plants like ragweed — unlike most species that need over ten pollen grains per cubic metre, ragweed can cause reactions with just one.
In response, various solutions are emerging. Japan is carrying out an ambitious plan to replace allergy-causing forests with low-pollen varieties. For individuals, antihistamines (抗组胺) and nose sprays help manage problems, while newer treatments like under-the-tongue allergen drops have shown promising effectiveness in alleviating problems.
The real-world impact is significant: research indicates that on high-pollen days, one in ten affected students may see their exam grades drop by a full level. In this context, perhaps we can still appreciate the simple treatment adopted by Dr. Bostock himself — escaping to the seaside for relief. Sometimes, the most straightforward solutions remain the most appealing.
12. What is the main trend concerning hay fever discussed in Paragraph 2?
A. The allergic season lasts longer now. B. Cases in cities are decreasing rapidly.
C. The disease is becoming less common. D. Pollen grains have become more harmful.
13. What makes ragweed more dangerous than most plants?
A. It needs far less pollen to cause a reaction. B. It grows much faster in urban environments.
C. It produces pollen throughout the whole year. D. It is the only plant that spreads in warm climates.
14. What does the word “alleviating” mean in Paragraph 5?
A. Developing. B. Recording. C. Changing. D. Reducing.
15. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. Old-fashioned solutions are less reliable than people think.
B. Simple solutions for hay fever can be practical and appealing.
C. The academic impact of hay fever is the most serious consequence.
D. Governmental solutions are more effective than individual treatments.
第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下列短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Breaking the Cycle of Anxious Overthinking
Have you ever been trapped in a cycle of anxious thoughts? You might imagine the worst, doubt your choices, or think over every little thing. This mental loop (循环) is tiring and often makes things worse instead of solving them. But what if the best way to stop isn’t about changing your thoughts at all?
Surprisingly, one simple but effective method is to shift your focus from your mind to your body. ___16___ Instead of fighting with your anxious thoughts, paying attention to physical movement, breath, or things you can feel can break the worry loop when thinking alone can’t.
Here’s why this works. When we overthink, we get stuck in the brain’s usual pattern, which keeps us trapped in cycles about the past and future. Yet, instead of solving problems, this pattern only keeps anxiety alive. ___17___ Engaging the body interrupts this cycle by activating the brain’s present- focused networks. which brings immediate relief.
Let’s look at two examples. Ethan, a graphic designer, often lay awake at night replaying talks with his boss. One night, he got up and did some stretching, paying attention to his muscles and breath. ___18___ Similarly, Lena, a student, felt anxious after meeting friends. After one difficult day, she went for a run, focusing on her footsteps and the air on her skin. After running, she felt her anxious thoughts lose their power.
___19___ Here are some practical steps: First, move your body. Take a walk, stretch, or dance — anything that turns your attention to physical feelings. Second, use your senses. Feel your feet on the ground, notice different materials, or listen closely to music. Third, breathe with care. Try box breathing: breathe in for four seconds, hold for four, breathe out for four, and hold again for four. Additionally, you can use temperature changes, like holding an ice cube or washing your face with cold water, to ground yourself instantly.
Remember, the next time worry pulls you into overthinking, don’t try to think harder — move your body instead. ___20___
A. In minutes, his worry became less strong.
B. Your body can be a powerful tool to quiet your busy mind.
C. How can you put this into practice when overthinking starts?
D. The key is to learn to observe your thoughts without judgment.
E. This physical shift can free you from the prison of your thoughts.
F. However, many people try to solve it by analyzing these thoughts.
G. However, physical activity redirects the brain from overthinking to the present moment.

An Unexpected Lesson
Jack was strong and when he shook your hand, it felt like every bone might break. In physics class, Jack was a joy to teach because he could do almost anything. So I was surprised by his reaction one day when we started a lesson on pulleys (滑轮) .
That week, we learned how pulleys and ropes can give you more strength. Jack was excited because he knew he could push and pull things. To get the point across, we went outside for a tug-of-war. Jack was against the entire class, with only a few pulleys to help him. The class was confident that they would win this time. But Jack set up his pulleys perfectly and won the game easily. He even boasted, “With the right pulley system, I bet I could even lift up the old tractor engine in our barn (谷仓) !”
Then, it was time to apply what we learned on paper. I asked the students to combine art and physics using pulleys. They had to solve a problem of their own design, drawing it on paper. Some students drew spaghetti dinners, using meatballs as pulleys and noodles as ropes. Others drew records as pulleys to hold up the band members.
A spark of excitement flashed in Jack’s eyes as he pictured a great project in his mind. But soon, his shoulders dropped. “Mr. Lampert,” he said in a low voice, “I can’t draw. Is there another way?” I was shocked. This was Big Jack. But drawing was not his cup of tea! As a teacher, I believed he could handle this challenge. I told him, “If you have a better idea I trust you to find your own way. Sometimes, a working model can be more powerful.”
On the day the assignment was due, Jack was absent. Everyone turned in their work except Jack. At dusk, I went home tired and fell asleep, wondering what Jack had decided to do. Suddenly, I was woken up by the sound of a horse’s hooves approaching my house.

Then, I heard a loud knock at the door. I opened it, surprised to find Jack standing there. Under the dim light, he looked exhausted, with sweat and dirt on his face, but his eyes were shining with excitement. “Mr. Lampert,” he said, catching his breath, “I’m sorry for missing class today. I didn’t draw anything, but… I built something. Could you please come to the barn with me?” Obviously, he had been busy doing physics today. My curiosity was instantly sparked, and I felt a growing anticipation about what the strong boy had created. So I nodded, followed him out, and together we rode his horse through the quiet night toward the old barn.
Inside the barn I saw Jack’s project brought to life. His project had been transformed into a real pulley system, from which a platform loaded with pounds of hay and an old tractor engine was suspended. “Hop on!” Jack encouraged, his eyes blazing with confidence. Then he grasped the rope. Much to my amazement, with a powerful pull of just one arm, he lifted the incredible weight and me effortlessly into the air. “So, Mr. Lampert, is that an A?” he asked earnestly. “Jack, that’s an A-plus!” I exclaimed proudly as he let me down. Although Jack didn’t submit a drawing, he moved an idea from paper into the world. He also showed me that students can indeed solve problems in their own unique ways. What an unexpected lesson I learned from Jack!
