In Chinese literature, few characters are as rebellious (叛逆的) as the Monkey King from Journey to the West and Nezha from Investiture of the Gods (封神演义). Both are known for their magical powers and their fights against unfair fates, making them beloved by Chinese people, especially artists and filmmakers.
Nezha 2, directed by Yang Yu, is the sequel to the 2019 hit film Nezha. Released during the 2024 Spring Festival holiday, it quickly became a box office success, earning over 10 billion yuan ($1.37 billion). It is now one of China’s highest-grossing films and ranks among the top 20 globally. The movie has been shown in countries like Australia, New Zealand, and the United States, with plans for release in Japan, Singapore, and South Korea.
Nezha’s story is more tragic (悲剧的) than the Monkey King’s. Born to mortal parents, his tale has been adapted (改编) many times since the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), but his rebellious spirit remains central. Nezha’s mythology spread with Buddhism, where he is often depicted as a brave protector of the Dharma (达摩), fighting evil spirits. However, Buddhist texts rarely mention his complicated relationship with his parents. In Song Dynasty (960-1279) stories, Nezha even cut his body apart, returning his flesh to his mother and bones to his father.
Over time, Nezha’s image changed, mixing Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism. Today, he is a classic Chinese literary figure, standing for rebellion and resilience. His story continues to inspire people worldwide.

B. Because they have magical powers and fight against unfair fates.

7. What can be inferred (推断) about Nezha’s story in Chinese mythology?
A. It is always happy and uplifting.
B. It has remained unchanged since ancient times.
C. It has been adapted to fit different times while keeping its rebellious spirits.
D. It is only popular in modern times because of movies.

To many people, art is a human expression of creativity. But in recent years, you may have read news about AI creating its own art. Some people worry that AI might replace artists someday.
However, this worry seems to be unnecessary, at least for now. Many artists today are turning AI into a useful tool. Instead of replacing artists, AI is bringing artists more possibilities.
A piece of music created by AI attracted people’s attention. AI was used to turn the novel corona virus into a piece of music based on its protein structure (蛋白质结构): The project was led by Markus Buehler, an American musician.
Except for creating imaginative works, AI can also do some easy work for artists again and again. For example, in the comic and animation industries, there are now AI tools that can automatically (自动地) color in black-and-white line drawings.
“Although the results require a little clean-up, it could give artists time to experiment, by cutting down the time it takes to color each drawing.” said a famous animator.
As Peter Ward wrote for The Culture Trip, art of every kind has always been influenced by technological (技术的) development. AI can become a useful tool to bring change to the art world if people don’t fear it and try to welcome it.
What else can AI do?
AI can learn different music styles by analyzing (分析) audio data. It uses this data to create music ranging from pop to jazz and more.
AI can learn different styles of paintings. For example, it can learn paintings of impressionism, and then-recreate paintings in the same style.
AI can be trained with past text to find trends and write or translate articles and poems. It also can help collect data and facts for news writing.
13. What’s the writer’s opinion about AI?
A. It is just useful for artists. B. People needn’t be afraid of it.
C. People can’t depend on it too much. D. It can be harmful to people in some way.
14. What’s the main idea of the fourth paragraph?
A. AI can make everything possible. B. AI can do everything better than humans.
C. AI can save time for artists to experiment. D. AI can only do the difficult work for artists.
15. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A. AI can help people make music.
B. AI can learn and recreate paintings.
C. AI can colour everything better than the real painters.
D. AI can help collect information for news writing.
16. What can we learn from the passage?
A. What AI can do for artists. B. How people can use AI correctly.
C. Why people can do better than AI. D. When AI first appeared in people’s life.

Do you like to read comic books? Do you know Captain America? How about Spider-man? And then Superman? 17
A comic book is a book made up of a series of pictures. The art and words are called “comic”, but that doesn’t always mean “funny”. Sometimes the comics are more serious.
Rodolphe Topffer was a teacher, but he also developed several comic strips which were published in different places in 1827. These were all drawn carefully by hand. 18 Topffer wrote in horizontal (水平的) blocks in his own handwriting. This became the standard(标准).
19 Here, artists loved the idea and developed the technique of using travel (穿行) in their comics, which were always popular. The French also took part in comic strips, while there were still others who stuck to single comics that were going down the page in the book—instead of horizontal blocks.
Comics started to become popular in the 20th century. 20 Comic strip artists have often used art to “make fun” of very serious subjects (话题). Even when they were not “making fun”, they used comics and characters to deal with serious topics.
Comic books continue to be popular, but over time, many of their characters have also been pictured in television shows and in movies.
A. Other artists don’t like comic strips.
B. Comic strips became popular in France.

Later, a farmer said, “The young child should be taken care of.” Finally, the grandfather and the grandson didn’t know what to do, so they carried the donkey with a stick.
范文二
One day, an old man and his little grandson rode a donkey to the market. On the way, they met a young man who laughed at them, saying it was silly for both to ride the donkey, as it would get tired easily. The grandson immediately got off and let the old man ride alone.
Soon, they passed an old woman. She shook her head and said the old man was selfish to let the little boy walk. Feeling ashamed, the old man got off and let the grandson ride. Later, a farmer saw them and advised them to take turns.
The grandfather and grandson looked at each other, not knowing what to do. In the end, they decided to carry the donkey together, which made all the passers-by laugh.

Ink wash painting (水墨画), Peking Opera, paper cutting…What will happen if we use these traditional art styles (形式) in cartoons? In fact, Chinese cartoon makers have worked on this since many years ago. Their works are full of Chinese features (特征).
Little Tadpoles Looking for Mummy,1960
This is China’s first ink wash painting cartoon. The cartoon makers drew all the animals, plants and rocks in the film with ink and a brush. Pigsy Eats Watermelon,1958
Zhu Bajie finds some watermelons. He doesn’t bring them back to his hungry friends, but enjoys the watermelons all by himself. The character Zhu Bajie was cut out of colored paper, Cartoon makers moved his body parts and let him “eat” the watermelons.
The Legend of Sealed Book, 1983
It also used ink wash painting for its backgrounds. And it used other traditional arts, too. The characters used makeup (妆容) in Peking Opera to help show their personalities (个性). “It shows Chinese artists’ ideas in cartoons-special, funny and beautiful,” said the film maker.
The Story of Afanti, 1979

A. It is always happy and uplifting.
B. It has remained unchanged since ancient times.

D. It is only popular in modern times because of movies.
8. What does the word “depicted” in Paragraph 3 mean?

第二节:阅读短文,从文后所给的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,其中有一个多余选项。
C. All of these characters started in comic books.
D. He is considered to be the father of comic strips.
E. It’s the time when they could be printed in large numbers.

A group of comics called “Tiny Eyes” go popular on the Internet. With these comics, Chinese artist Cao Siyu shares the differences between Chinese culture and Western culture.
Cao Siyu comes from Beijing. She spent the last 10 years in France, the UK and the USA. “Many foreign people that I met were interested in China.” She explained. “But most of their ideas about China are out of date. I hope I can change the image of China in foreigners’ mind.” That is why Cao Siyu put her idea of “Tiny Eyes” comics into practice.
By bringing words and images together, the Chinese artist tells stories in a simple yet powerful way. She shares Chinese people’s daily life and compares how differently people act in the same situation.
In one comic, for example, she compared French cutlery (餐具) with Chinese one: While French people use eight different forks and knives for a meal, Chinese people can make it with only a pair of chopsticks. And in another comic, Cao Siyu made it clear how people from different cultures express love. She wrote below the comic, “Chinese people are not used to saying ‘I love you, Mum’. Instead, they show their love in actions.”
Cao Siyu provides a new way for foreigners to know her motherland, and her works have gathered about 20 thousand fans on the Internet. “People from one culture may not be able to fully understand another. But we can listen to each other.” she said.
