17.What is the speaker mainly talking about?
A.How to start a conversation.
B.How to become a good talker.
C.How to interact with a stranger.
18.What kind of topic can be a good icebreaker?
A.Something shocking. B.Something pleasant. C.Something sorrowful.

A.Making comments. B.Praising others constantly. C.Trying to be the smartest person.
20.What is the best way to keep a conversation going?
A.Sharing your hobbies. B.Making your talk funny. C.Showing your sincerity.
【答案】17.B 18.B 19.C 20.C
W: Have you ever wished you were better at making a conversation? A great talker is someone who connects with people and makes them feel important. When they talk to you, they make you feel you’re the only person in the room. Becoming a good talker requires knowing three things: first, how to start a conversation; second, how to keep it going; and third, how to end it. Starting a conversation usually means coming up with an opening line or icebreaker. The best kind of icebreaker is one that makes people happy. Praise is always a good icebreaker and will usually be welcomed. The last thing people want to hear from a stranger is how noisy the party is, how terrible the food is, or how ugly the people are dressed. But don’t attempt to be the smartest person in the room. No one is expected to know everything. Anyway, the fact is, the best way to attract a person to keep a conversation with you is by being sincere and respectful, and letting them know that you are interested in talking to them.

Students at Franklin Middle School not only got to play carnival (狂欢节) games during school hours, but also raised money for a good cause. The eighth-graders from Phillip Whitworth’s classes did this by selling tickets for admission to the Annual Carnival Fundraiser, where they packed into the school’s gymnasium and played a huge variety of carnival games. The funds raised go toward a charitable organization that drills water wells in Africa.
“Knowledge is useless without action,” Phillip said of the event, which was started by Phillip and his wife in 2019, inspired by a book read in the school district called A Long Walk to Water. The novel tells the story of a fictional character named Nya, an 11-year-old South Sudanese girl who has to walk eight hours a day to bring home water, and the real-life Salva Dut, who founded an organization called Water for South Sudan.
To raise money, the Whitworths and Phillip’s students organized the school’s first annual carnival in 2019. Every year, the students choose the games that most people like and sell tickets to their classmates, and get donations from businesses and personal connections.
Camryn Robinson, an eighth-grader, found the experience of gathering donations stressful but added that it helped improve her communication skills. “A lot of people don’t take children seriously at first. But if you show people that it’s not just a carnival — it’s something that’s bigger than that, they will listen,” Camryn said.
Over the years, the students have raised money to drill three new wells and repair another three in South Sudan. This year, the students sold a little over 700 tickets for $5 each, so they raised around $3,500. But when factoring in business and personal donations, the students have raised more than $10,000, with donations still coming in.
“We might not be able to solve the whole problem, but we can absolutely make a difference for some people,” Phillip said.
24.What role did A Long Walk to Water play in the fundraising campaign?
A.It inspired Salva Dut to join the mission. B.It taught students to organize a carnival.
C.It led to the start of the charitable cause. D.It motivated businesses to donate money.
25.What do Phillip’s students do for the annual carnival?
A.They drill wells in person. B.They organize some games.
C.They work at different companies. D.They collect tickets from cinemas.
26.What did Camryn Robinson say about gathering donations?
A.It was very rewarding. B.It was unchallenging.
C.Kids shouldn’t get involved. D.Most people initially supported it.
27.What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A.Phillip’s objective comments. B.Dramatic changes in South Sudan.
C.The outcome of the students’ efforts. D.Donations from all over the world.
【答案】24.C 25.B 26.A 27.C
根据第二段““Knowledge is useless without action,” Phillip said of the event, which was started by Phillip and his wife in 2019, inspired by a book read in the school district called A Long Walk to Water.(菲利普谈到这次活动时说:“知识若不付诸行动便毫无意义。”这次活动是菲利普和他的妻子在2019年发起的,其灵感来源于他们在学区阅读的一本名为《漫漫取水路》的书)”可知,这本书促成了这项慈善事业的开启。故选C。
25.细节理解题。根据第三段“To raise money, the Whitworths and Phillip’s students organized the school’s first annual carnival in 2019. Every year, the students choose the games that most people like and sell tickets to their classmates, and get donations from businesses and personal connections.(为了筹集资金,惠特沃斯夫妇和菲利普的学生们在 2019 年组织了学校首届年度狂欢节。每年,学生们都会挑选最受欢迎的游戏,并向同学们出售门票,同时还会从企业以及个人关系中获得捐款)”可知,Phillip的学生会为狂欢节组织和安排一些游戏。故选B。
26.推理判断题。根据第四段“Camryn Robinson, an eighth-grader, found the experience of gathering donations stressful but added that it helped improve her communication skills.(卡姆里恩·罗宾逊是一名八年级学生,她认为收集捐赠物资的过程让她感到有些压力,但同时她也表示这有助于提升自己的沟通能力)”可知,Camryn Robinson认为募集捐款很有益。故选A。
根据第五段“Over the years, the students have raised money to drill three new wells and repair another three in South Sudan. With gas and electricity bills rising faster, a house that produces more energy than it consumes might sound appealing. Robert Fortunato’s “Green Idea House” has achieved this for over a decade. He remodeled (改造) his family’s 1959 house into a 2150-square-foot environmentally friendly home at a cost lower than a traditional remodel.
“It’s one of the first net-zero energy, zero carbon case study houses built cheaper than standard construction,” he says, using “standard materials and off-the-shelf (现成的) technologies anyone can use.” Though the project needed much time, research, and adaptability, his family now lives in a stylish four — bedroom home. Fortunato hopes others can learn from his experience.
First, you need to get into the power business. Fortunato wanted to cut climate-warming fossil fuels and chose electric appliances. To supply electricity, he fixed 26 roof solar panels that power the house and two electric cars. Though the panels cost $18,000, his family saves $4,800 yearly.
Second, thorough research and planning are key, His house’s flat roof extends five feet, hiding solar panels and saving 60% of heating or cooling energy: it shades the house in summer and lets sunlight warm it in winter. This idea came from Native American house design.
Third, stick to your plan firmly and update it when needed. Fortunato insisted on materials from a nearby factory to avoid long-distance delivery emissions (排放). When the supplier said his chosen brown color was only from Texas, he said, “Well, no, I only want the local materials,” with some exasperation.
Finally, don’t expect everyone to follow. Fortunato made his house affordable and attractive, unlike some efficient homes that looked like spaceships, to encourage others. However, such energy-positive houses still make up less than 1% of America’s 140 million housing units, which he finds is very disappointing.
28.What makes Robert Fortunato’s “Green Idea House” special at first?
A.It has a long history. B.It is more energy-saving.
C.It is a 2150-square-foot house. D.It uses new and expensive technologies.
29.How long did it take Fortunato to recover the cost of the solar panels?
A.About four years. B.About three years.
C.About fifteen years. D.About thirteen years.
30.What does the underlined word “exasperation” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A.Anger. B.Curiosity. C.Excitement. D.Embarrassment.
31.What is Fortunato’s attitude towards his project?
A.He feels regretful about the time it took.
B.He is so disappointed with few followers.
C.He thinks it is too expensive for ordinary families.
D.He worries that the technologies will soon be out of date.
【答案】28.B 29.A 30.A 31.B
根据第二段中的“It’s one of the first net-zero energy, zero carbon case study houses built cheaper than standard construction,(它是首批净零能耗、零碳的案例研究住宅之一,建造成本低于标准建筑)”以及第一段提到的“a house that produces more energy than it consumes might sound appealing. Robert Fortunato’s “Green Idea House” has achieved this for over a decade.(一座能源产出大于消耗的房子可能听起来很有吸引力。Robert Fortunato的“绿色理念屋”已经实现这一点十多年了)”可知,这座房子最初的特别之处在于它更节能,能实现能源自给。故选B项。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Though the panels cost $18,000, his family saves $4,800 yearly.(虽然太阳能电池板花费了18000美元,但他的家人每年能节省4800美元)”可知,回收太阳能电池板成本所需时间=总花费÷每年节省费用,即18000÷4800=3.75年,约为四年。故选A项。
根据第五段中的“Fortunato insisted on materials from a nearby factory to avoid long-distance delivery emissions (排放). When the supplier said his chosen brown color was only from Texas, he said, “Well, no, I only want the local materials,’”with some exasperation.(Fortunato坚持使用附近工厂的材料,以避免长途运输的排放。当供应商说他选择的棕色材料只能来自德克萨斯州时,他有些exasperation地说:“不,我只想要本地材料。”)”可知,Fortunato一直坚持使用本地材料的原则,而供应商的说法违背了他的初衷,由此可猜测他此时的情绪是有些生气的,exasperation意为“愤怒、恼怒”,与anger意思相近。故选A项。
根据最后一段中的“However, such energy-positive houses still make up less than 1% of America’s 140 million housing units, which he finds is very disappointing.(然而,这类能源盈余型住宅在美国1.4亿套住房中仍占不到1%,他认为这非常令人失望)”可知,Fortunato因为追随他的人很少而感到失望。故选B项。
D
Some people have said aging is more a slide into forgetfulness than a journey towards wisdom. However, a growing body of research suggests that late-in-life learning in reality education possibly does an aging brain good.
Throughout life, people’s brains constantly restore themselves. In the late 1960s, British brain scientist Geoffrey Raisman studied growth in damaged brain regions of rats through an electron microscope; their brains were making new connections. This meant brains may change every time a person learns something new.
Of course, that doesn’t mean the brain isn’t affected by the effects of time. Just as height usually declines over the years, so does brain volume: Humans lose about 4 percent every decade starting in their 40s. But that reduction doesn’t necessarily make people think slower; as long as we are alive and functioning, we can change our brains with new information and experiences.
In fact, scientists now suspect accumulating novel experiences, facts, and skills can keep people’s minds more flexible. New pathways can strengthen our ever-changing mental structure, even as the brain shrinks.
Conventional ways like word puzzles and brain-training apps can contribute to mental durability. Even something as simple as taking a different route to the grocery store or going somewhere new on vacation can keep the brain healthy.
A desire for new life challenges can further boost brainpower. Research about aging adults who take on new enterprises shows improved function and memory as well as a reduced risk of mental disease. Openness — a, characteristic defined by curiosity and a desire for knowledge-may also help folks pass brain tests. Some folks are born with this take-in-the-world attitude, but those who aren’t as genetically gifted aren’t necessarily out of luck. While genes can encourage an interest in doing new things, a 2012 study in the journal Psychology and Aging found completing reasoning tasks like puzzles and number games can enhance that desire for novel experiences, which can, in turn, refresh the brain. That’s why brain scientist Richard Kennedy says “It’s not that old dogs can’t learn new tricks. It’s that maybe old dogs don’t realize why they should.”
32.What do some people think of aging adults?
A.Their wisdom grows as time goes by. B.Their memory is gradually getting worse.
C.They can benefit from late-in-life learning. D.They are likely to have mental health issues.
33.What can we conclude from Geoffrey Raisman’s finding?
A.Brain damage seriously prevents one’s learning.
B.Brain power weakens slower than we imagine.
C.Brains may refresh and improve with learning.
D.Brains make connections under good physical conditions.
34.What is one thing that helps maintain the health of our brain even as it shrinks?
A.Doing daily routines by conventional means. B.Avoiding worrying about our mental strength.
C.Imitating old dogs’ way of learning new tricks. D.Approaching everyday tasks in novel ways.
35.What is the finding of the 2012 study in the journal Psychology and Aging?
A.Wishing to solve puzzles enhances one’s reasoning power.
B.Playing number games unexpectedly stimulates one’s memory.
C.Desiring new experiences can help to refresh the brain.
D.Learning new tricks should not be confined to old dogs only.
【答案】32.B 33.C 34.D 35.C

根据文章第一段“Some people have said aging is more a slide into forgetfulness than a journey towards wisdom.(一些人说,衰老更像是走向健忘,而不是走向智慧的旅程)”可知,一些人认为衰老意味着记忆逐渐变差。故选B。
根据文章第二段“In the late 1960s, British brain scientist Geoffrey Raisman studied growth in damaged brain regions of rats through an electron microscope; their brains were making new connections. This meant brains may change every time a person learns something new.(20世纪60年代末,英国脑科学家杰弗里·雷斯曼通过电子显微镜研究了大鼠受损大脑区域的生长情况:它们的大脑正在建立新的神经连接。这意味着,每当一个人学习新东西时,大脑都可能发生改变。)”可知,Geoffrey Raisman的研究结果表明,大脑可以通过学习进行刷新和改善。故选C。
34.细节理解题。根据文章第五段“Even something as simple as taking a different route to the grocery store or going somewhere new on vacation can keep the brain healthy.(即使是像去杂货店走不同的路线或在度假时去新的地方这样简单的事情也能保持大脑健康)”可知,通过新颖的方式处理日常任务有助于维持大脑健康。故选D。
根据文章最后一段“While genes can encourage an interest in doing new things, a 2012 study in the journal Psychology and Aging found completing reasoning tasks like puzzles and number games can enhance that desire for novel experiences, which can, in turn, refresh the brain.(虽然基因能够激发人们尝试新事物的兴趣,但2012年发表在《心理学与老年》杂志上的一项研究发现,完成诸如拼图和数字游戏这类推理任务能够增强人们对新奇体验的渴望,而这种渴望反过来又能使大脑得到放松和恢复)”可知,2012年《心理学与衰老》期刊的研究发现,渴望新体验有助于让大脑恢复活力。
Gardening is a hobby and a way of providing food for the community. But not all gardening is created equal when it comes to sustainability. One voice has been trying to shift the traditional farming practices. English horticulturalist Charles Dowding began experimenting with no-dig gardening to test the effectiveness of the process. 36
What is no-dig gardening? It’s exactly what it sounds like. 37 After all, for more than a century, gardening’s first step has always been farming the soil. No-dig gardening goes against everything you know about cultivating seeds and plants.
38 It starts with finding the right location for your garden. Like all gardens, a no-dig plot needs to have access to full sun. However, it can be placed on your prepared garden bed, a raised bed, or even pots. In order to continue the no-dig gardening process, you need to remove any grass or weeds from your planting area. Do this by cutting them as low as possible.
Following the removal of grass or weeds, lay down the dampened cardboard or newspaper, followed by a layer of straw. On top of that, layer rich compost (堆肥). 39 On the compost, add a layer of manure (肥料). If you don’t like the strong smell of fresh manure, you can add an additional layer of straw to the top. Also note you can mix these layers around with similar results.

_______(dedicate) to promoting Chinese culture and enhancing global understanding of China作后置定语修饰platform, platform和dedicate之间逻辑上的动宾关系,要用过去分词表示被动含义。故填dedicated。
三个谓语动作showcases(展现)、enhances(推动)和fosters(促进)之间是并列关系,要用并列连词and连接,表示顺承关系。故填and。
making a large collection of cultural content — articles, images, and videos_______用的是“make+sth.+所填词”结构,make表示“使得”,所填词要用形容词作宾语补足语,access的形容词是accessible,表示“可理解的、易获取的”,符合句意。故填accessible。

故填a。

Dear Jenny,
I’m excited to tell you about the tai chi competition held at my school last week. The event took place on the sunlit sports ground. Over fifty participants in white uniforms moved gracefully to soft music, creating a peaceful atmosphere.
As a first-time competitor, I felt both nervous and inspired. Through weeks of practice, I learned that tai chi is not just about slowing movements — it’s a way to calm the mind and improve focus. Although I didn’t win a prize, I gained a deeper appreciation for this ancient art.
If you visit China someday, I’d love to show you some basic moves!
Yours,
Li Hua

The job had sounded discouraging on paper, but nothing could have prepared me for the chaos of those first few weeks in the classroom. I took a role teaching students aged 6-12 with severe learning and behavioral difficulties, kids who’d been moved from school to school with no program able to meet their needs. Among them was Kyle: a quick-tempered boy with a history of explosive outbursts.
For weeks, my co-teacher and I drilled the class on public behavior, preparing them for a trip to play mini-golf. When Kyle learned he hadn’t earned the privilege to go, he lost his temper. In the hallway between classrooms, he screamed cursed, and swung at lockers until his rage died down — then, as he’d done at every other school, he ran.
He burst through the front doors and straight into the heavy morning traffic. Onlookers froze, and someone shouted, “Call the police!” But I couldn’t just stand by. I laced up my running shoes and chased after him. Kyle was a foot taller than me and fast, but I’d trained for long distances, and I refused to lose him.
We wove through cars for blocks, and finally, Kyle ducked into a narrow alley, slowing to lean over a wooden box, his hands on his knees as he breathed heavily. When he looked up and saw me, his body tensed like a frightened animal — his shoulders hunched, eyes wide. But then, something shifted. He relaxed, his posture softening, and he didn’t try to run again.
We stood there, locked in a silent stare. I willed every ounce of compassion I had toward him, letting him see I wasn’t there to punish or judge. His lips slowly parted and whispered, “No one, no one, ever ran after me before.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
His quiet words hung in the air, soft but heavy.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
That day marked a turning point in Kyle’s time at school.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
His quiet words hung in the air, soft but heavy. I knelt down to meet his gaze, my voice steady as I told him I’d never let him run alone again, that he was worth chasing. The last of the tension melted from his shoulders, and he nodded slowly, as if finally allowing himself to believe my words. We stood there a moment longer, the hum of distant traffic fading. I offered him my hand, and after a long pause, he slipped his small palm into mine, his fingers curling loosely around mine as we stepped out of the alley. Then I gently suggested we head back to school — no scolding, just companionship.
That day marked a turning point in Kyle’s time at school. He stopped running from his anger, instead turning to me when frustration bubbled over, and slowly began trusting the other staff too. He never missed another chance to earn class trip privileges, and his outbursts became rare. He even started raising his hand in class, his voice small but clear when he answered questions. For a boy who’d grown used to being left behind, my simple act of chasing him taught him he was seen — and that was enough to start mending what had been broken.

Once your quality mix is ready, plant your seeds. Simply part the prepared soil and place the seeds at recommended depth and intervals (间隔). 40 Note that they may require less water than a traditional garden.
A.Actually, no-dig gardening is quite simple.
B.But that might leave you unable to imagine how to garden.
C.You need to select the seeds carefully.
D.People needn’t learn traditional soil management techniques.
E.His results have repeatedly proven the many benefits of the practice.
F.This can be bought, received from a neighbor or made in your own backyard.
G.Water your newly planted seeds and monitor moisture levels as they grow.

In the world of business, I have always believed that we aren’t just selling goods; we are selling possibilities. A 41 attitude is our most valuable product. So, when I overheard one of my cashiers shaking his head and telling a 42 customer, “We haven’t had it for a while, and honestly, I doubt if we’ll be getting it soon,” my 43 role took over right away.
I stepped in like a superhero of customer service, 44 my most reassuring smile. “Nonsense!” I declared, 45 the negativity. “Ma’ am, ignore him. I personally guarantee that you will have exactly what you need.” Her face transformed instantly. She looked 46 , thanked me, and walked out with a lightness in her step that hadn’t been there before.
Feeling proud of my intervention, I pulled the cashier aside for a necessary coaching session. “Listen,” I said, perhaps a bit 47 . “Rule number one: Never 48 a customer’s hope. Never tell them we are out of anything permanently. Always tell them we’ll have it next week. 49 keeps people coming back.”
I pulled out my notepad, ready to 50 an emergency order. “Now,” I asked confidently, “what exactly was she looking for?”
The cashier didn’t blink. “ 51 .”
I burst out laughing. Of all things — the one item not even Amazon, the largest e-commerce platform, can 52 .
Yet in that moment, something beautiful 53 . Sometimes people walk into our lives carrying droughts in their hearts, longing for something bigger than any shelf can hold. We may not control the clouds, but we can still offer a cheerful 54 : “It’s coming. Just 55 a little longer.” A small promise, a dash of humor, and a whole lot of hope — that’s often enough to keep someone smiling.

Listen to the next question. Have you ever wished you were Better at making a conversation? A great talker is someone who connects with people and makes them feel important. When they talk to you, they make you feel you're the only person in the room. Becoming a good talker requires knowing three things. First, how to start a conversation. Second, how to keep IT going. And third, how to end IT. Starting a conversation usually means coming up with an opening line or ice's aker. The best kind of ice's aker is one that makes people happy. Praise is always a good ice's aker and will usually be welcomed. The last thing people want to hear from a stranger is how noisy the party is, how terrible the food is, or how ugly the people are dressed. But don't attempt to be the smartest person in the room. No one is expected to know everything anyway. The fact is, the best way to attract a person to keep a conversation with you is by being sincere and respectful and letting them know that you are interested in talking to them.
