Though being a parent has always been difficult, the Internet hasn’t made the job any easier. In today’s digital age, parents face the challenge of monitoring their children’s online behavior.
A study from the Digital Future Project shows that 70% of parents watch over their kids on social media like Facebook. In contrast, 30% of parents don’t step in kids’ online life because they trust their kids, don’t know how to use media sites or have no time to do so. Such a great difference is due to the fact that parents bring up children in totally different styles across generations.
Many parents take action to oversee their teens’ online activities. Nearly six-in-ten parents say they often or sometimes check which websites their teen visits. 46% have a password to their children’s social media accounts. In order to combat unsafe website surfing, some parents even download software such as Spectorsoft, which blocks, records and warns parents by monitoring kids’ Internet use.
However, Gwenn Schurgin O’Keffe, a parenting expert, warns against using such tools unless it’s really necessary. “You do things because you love your kids and you want to protect them,” she says, “But kids aren’t these evil creatures. Not trusting the online world should not be your only choice.”
Global efforts are underway to make the Internet safe for youngsters. The US government updated COPPA (the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act) to better protect children’s private information. Europe has given people the right to erase their surfing history on the Internet. Only with permission, should companies there have the right to access personal data.
Although there are these measures, the number of new websites keeps popping up, making it harder for rules and laws to keep up with. Therefore, parents must keep an eye on their children’s media lives, balancing trust with oversight.
4.What does the study from the Digital Future Project find?
A.It is hard to control children’s online behavior.
B.Parents differ in how they monitor their kids’ Internet use.

D.Parents who monitor kids’ online activity don’t trust their kids.
5.The word “combat” in Paragraph 3 probably means “________”.
A.give up B.carry out C.fight against D.join in
6.O’Keffe advises against using software such as Spectorsoft because ________.
A.parents need to think about more than the danger of the Internet
B.children can surf the Internet without parents’ help
C.different people have different parenting styles
D.such software is useless in a special situation
7.The writer probably agrees that ________.
A.COPPA is helpful for collecting kids’ private information
B.reasonable space is needed for kids to experience the online life
C.allowing kids to clean web-page records may hide the truth
D.governments play a major role in protecting children’s online safety

I’m Black Beauty, a male horse. Before I was taken to Mr. Gordon, my mother Duchess spoke to me, “All young horses have to leave mothers. Whatever happens, try to be gentle and stay away from bad behaviours.”
Then I came to Mr Gordon’s house.
In the stable (马厩) next to mine was a little fat grey horse.
I put my head up and said, “Nice to meet you! What’s your name?” He seemed unhappy. “I’m Merrylegs. You are my neighbour?”
I said yes.
“Well,” he continued, “I hope you are well-behaved. I don’t like anyone who bites people.” Then he went on, “Mr Gordon should be the best owner!”
A tall brown female horse shouted at him, “No one knows how long a good home will last!”
Merrylegs lowered his voice and whispered, “She’s Ginger with a bad habit of biting people.”
The angry voice came again, “You don’t know anything! If you went through my life, you would bite too.”
“Poor Ginger! What made her so unhappy?” I thought to myself.
The next day when I worked with Ginger, she told the whole story.
“I was taken away early from Mother and there was no kind master to look after me. My training started with several men forcing me against a wall. One held my nose and another pulled my mouth open to put a bit in. They never gave me a chance to understand what they wanted.”
“How could that be?” I said.
“After the training, I was sold to a man in London, who drove me with a bearing rein (缰绳). It is a kind of rein that pulls your neck all the way back. Imagine your neck on fire with pain?”
“Horrible!” I cried.
“After that, a gentleman found me and he thought that it was wrong for a fine horse to go bad like that. So I was brought here, not long before you came. We are lucky here, at least they treat us gently,” Ginger said.
I felt sorry about her painful experiences which showed exactly why she bit people. “She was rude to people but she couldn’t be that way always: What can I do for her? I couldn’t stop thinking about it.”

Making new friends isn’t easy. It can be difficult to know what to talk about, so we choose safe topics like the weather, music or books. These conversations are polite but often feel empty and don’t usually lead to a real friendship. But what if there was a way to feel close to someone much faster?
Research shows there may be a quicker way to build strong connections—by asking deep, thought-provoking questions. This idea first appeared in the late 1990s, when scientists created something called the Fast-Friends Steps. In these studies, strangers were asked to discuss personal topics such as “What would a perfect day be like for you?” or “What item would you save first if your house was on fire?” After talking for just 45 minutes, participants (参与者) said they felt surprisingly close and some even stayed in touch after the study ended.
Then in 2024, researchers in the Netherlands wondered if this way could also work to improve the relationships between parents and their children. During this experiment, parents spoke with their children, but instead of common small talks, parents asked more meaningful questions such as “What’s the strangest thing you have ever experienced?” or “When was the last time you felt alone?” Before and after the talks, the children completed a short questionnaire about how loved and supported they felt. Even after just nine minutes of conversation, the children’s scores increased greatly, showing that these meaningful questions helped them feel closer to their parents.
Psychologists say the reason asking deep questions helps us to connect with others is because of something called “self-disclosure”. When we open up and share our personal thoughts and feelings, this creates feelings of closeness. Maybe building a close bond with someone doesn’t always take years. Sometimes, it can start in just a few minutes.
12.Which question would you use to build a real friendship with others?
A.Did you catch the weather this morning? It’s freezing cold.
B.Have you read the best-seller The Let Them Theory recently?
C.Christmas is coming. What would you buy for your kid as a Christmas gift?
D.Have you listened to Olivia Rodrigo’s new song? It’s been in my head all day.
13.What was the purpose of the 2024 experiment in the Netherlands?
A.When to make children feel loved at home.
B.How to help strangers become friends quickly.
C.What kind of questions are meaningful to children.
D.Whether deep questions can improve parent-child relationships.
14.What does the underlined word “self-disclosure” mean in the last paragraph?
A.Staying in touch. B.Opening one’s heart.
C.Choosing safe topics. D.Building strong connections.
15.What may be the best title of the passage?
A.Small talks can build good friendship.
B.Making close friends won’t take many years.
C.Conversations are useful in friendship making.
D.Deep questions help create closeness with others quickly.

Being a teenager is not easy these days. You have to face new problems and try to find out how to deal with them. 16 . You need to find out what you like and start doing it
Teenagers have always had these problems, but young people today live in a world that is changing so fast. 17 . This can be good as it means more chances. But it can also be a bad thing as it may cause “mental internal friction (精神内耗)”.
Scientists say that “mental internal friction” happens when people have to think a lot in order to be able to move from “old ideas” to “new ideas”. They have to ask themselves such questions as “Are the new ideas good?” and “Will they make me feel happy?” It is difficult to find the answers, especially for young people. 18 . So they may feel tired, unhappy and even have trouble sleeping at night.
19 . There are some ways to solve them. First, you must know yourself, as Aristotle put it, “Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom (智慧).” Second, develop new interests. 20 . He said that learning about “old things” made it easier for him to deal with the “new things” in modern life. The third thing you can do is spend time in nature. Charlotte’s Web
Written by E.B.White and first published (出版) in 1952, Charlotte’s Web is a classic story set largely in a farm. It is a story of friendship and a celebration of farm life.
The story takes place on a farm. Eight-year-old Fern Arable is sad when she hears that her father is going to kill the smallest pig. Saying that the pig has a right to life and promising to look after it in their family’s yard, she saves the animal and names him Wilbur. However, fearing his daughter is spending too much time with an animal, Mr. Arable sends Wilbur to the nearby farm of Fern’s uncle, Mr. Zuckerman.
At first, Wilbur’s lonely and misses Fern. However, he settles in his new home when he makes friends with a spider named Charlotte and other animals. When Wilbur learns that he is going to be killed and served at Christmas dinner, Charlotte comes up with a plan to save him.
Charlotte spins (结网) words of praise like “Some pig” for Wilbur on her web.
This catches the attention of the Zuckermans and their neighbors. They all think Wilbur is special and the thought of killing him becomes unthinkable.
When Wilbur is taken to the country fair, Charlotte goes to continue her work.
She spins new messages. The results draw huge crowds and Charlotte’s plan to save Wilbur’s life pays off.
At the close of the fair, however, Charlotte says goodbye to Wilbur. She is dying. But she entrusts her friend with her eggs. Heart broken (孵化). Three of Charlotte’s “kids” stay with Wilbur and live happily with him on the farm.
While humorous, the novel also contains important lessons. For example, Fern’s caring for Wilbur teaches her responsibility. And she realizes that if she stands up for what she believes in, she can make a difference in the world.
