It happened in Circle City. Thornton tried to stop the fight between Burton and another man. Buck, Thornton’s dog, was lying in the corner watching. Then Burton hit Thornton. Buck flew through the air at Burton’s throat. Burton saved his own life by putting up his arm, and was thrown onto the ground, with Buck on top of him. Then people pulled Buck off, and called a doctor. The locals agreed that Buck had only attacked (攻击) because he saw Thornton in danger. From that day, Buck’s name became famous all over the north.
Later that year, Buck saved Thornton in a different way. Thornton was in the boat down a fast and rocky river, while Hans and Pete, his friends, moved along the river bank, holding the boat with a rope. Buck followed them, keeping a worried eye on Thornton.
They came to a dangerous part of the river. The boat went so quickly that Hans had to pull the rope to stop it. But the boat turned over. Thornton dropped into the water down towards rocks.
Buck jumped in at once and swam three hundred meters until he reached Thornton. They moved slowly, and all the time the river was carrying them down. Thornton knew they would not get to the bank quickly enough, so he let go of Buck before both of them got killed. He held onto a rock in the middle of the water, and shouted, “Leave! Buck, go!”
Buck swam hard to the bank, and Pete and Hans pulled him out.
It was hard for Thornton to hold onto the rock in that wild water, and his friends knew they had only a few minutes to save him. They tied their rope round Buck, who jumped in right away. The first time, the water took him past the rock, and Pete and Hans had to pull him back. The second time, he swam higher up the river, and the water brought him down to Thornton. Thornton held onto Buck, and Hans and Pete pulled the rope hard. Man and dog disappeared under the water, turning over and over. When Hans and Pete finally pulled them out, both seemed dead. But after a while their eyes opened and life returned.

Quantum (量子) computers have been on my mind a lot lately. A friend has been sending me articles on how quantum computers might help solve some of the biggest challenges we face as humans. I’ve also had exchanges with two quantum-computing experts. One is computer scientist Chris Johnson who I see as someone who helps keep the field honest. The other is physicist Philip Taylor.
For decades, quantum computing has been little more than a laboratory curiosity. Now, big tech companies have invested in quantum computing, as have many smaller ones. According to Business Weekly, quantum machines could help us “cure cancer, and even take steps to turn climate change in the opposite direction.” This is the sort of hype (炒作) that annoys Johnson. He worries that researchers are making promises they can’t keep. “What’s new,” Johnson wrote, “is that millions of dollars are now potentially available to quantum computing researchers.”
As quantum computing attracts more attention and funding, researchers may mislead investors, journalists, the public, and worst of all, themselves about their work’s potential. If researchers can’t keep their promises, excitement might give way to doubt, disappointment, and anger, Johnson warns. Lots of other technologies have gone through stages of excitement. But something about quantum computing makes it especially prone to hype, Johnson suggests, perhaps because “‘quantum’ stands for something cool you shouldn’t be able to understand.” And that brings me back to Taylor, who suggested that I read his book Q for Quantum.
After I read the book, Taylor patiently answered my questions about it. He also answered my questions about PyQuantum, the firm he co-founded in 2016. Taylor shares Johnson’s concerns about hype, but he says those concerns do not apply to PyQuantum.
The company, he says, is closer than any other firm “by a very large margin (幅度)” to building a “useful” quantum computer, one that “solves an impactful problem that we would not have been able to solve otherwise.” He adds, “People will naturally discount my opinions, but I have spent a lot of time quantitatively comparing what we are doing with others.”
Could PyQuantum really be leading all the competition “by a wide margin”, as Taylor claims? I don’t know. I’m certainly not going to advise my friend or anyone else to invest in quantum computers. But I trust Taylor, just as I trust Johnson.
43.Considering Johnson’s worry, the author is ________.
A.supportive B.unconcerned C.unsure D.excited
44.What leads to Taylor’s optimism about quantum computing?
A.His influence in physics. B.The competition in the field.
C.His confidence in PyQuantum. D.The investment of tech companies.
45.What does the underlined word “prone” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A.Open B.Cool. C.Useful. D.Resistant.
46.Which would be the best title for the passage?
A.Is Johnson More Competent Than Taylor?
B.Is Quantum Computing Redefining Technology?
C.Will Quantum Computers Ever Come into Being?
D.Will Quantum Computing Ever Live Up to Its Hype?

In many families today, teenagers’ schedules are fully managed by parents—from homework deadlines to weekend activities. While well-intentioned, this over-involvement may hinder the development of personal responsibility, experts warn. “Responsibility isn’t just completing tasks,” says Dr. Lin Mei, a youth psychologist. “It’s about making choices, facing consequences, and learning from mistakes. If adults always step in to fix things, teens never build resilience.”
Recognizing this, several schools in Changzhou have introduced “Autonomy Projects.” In one program, ninth-graders design and run a mini-community service initiative—such as organizing a neighborhood e-waste collection drive or tutoring younger students in math. They must plan budgets, assign roles, and solve unexpected problems, all with minimal teacher intervention.
“The goal is to shift from ‘What should I do?’ to ‘What do I choose to do?’” explains Mr. Huang, a coordinator. “Failure is allowed—even encouraged—as long as they reflect and adapt.”
Initial results are promising. Teachers report increased initiative and problem-solving skills. Parents notice their children taking more ownership of chores and time management. “My son used to forget his P.E. kit every Monday,” said Mrs. Xu. “Now he prepares it Sunday night—without being reminded.”
Dr. Lin emphasizes that responsibility fosters long-term confidence. “A teen who learns to own their decisions at 15 won’t be overwhelmed by adult life at 25,” she says. “Independence isn’t given—it’s practiced.”
47.According to Dr. Lin, what is a key element of true responsibility?
A.Following parents’ instructions carefully.
B.Avoiding mistakes at all costs.
C.Learning from one’s own decisions.
D.Completing assigned chores quickly.
48.What do students do in the “Autonomy Projects”?
A.Manage real-life community tasks.
B.Compete in academic exams.
C.Write essays about famous leaders.
D.Attend extra tutoring classes.
49.What change did Mrs. Xu observe in her son?
A.He became more interested in sports.
B.He started reminding her about chores.
C.He took initiative without prompts.
D.He refused to do homework alone.
50.What is the author’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To criticize modern parenting styles.
B.To promote a new school curriculum.
C.To compare Chinese and Western education.
D.To argue that responsibility must be practiced early.

Life on Mars will be better in many ways. 53 It is possible to live in a large building with many bedrooms. Then, robot will do most of the work, so we have more time for hobbies.
54 Every student can study, do their homework on the computer and take exams in online schools. Each student will also have their own online teacher called “e-teacher”.
However, in some ways, life on Mars may not be better than that on the earth today. 55 Meals will probably be in the shape of pills(药片) and will not be as delicious as they are today. Also, space travel will make many people feel ill.
A.There will probably be no school on Mars.
B.It might take us two or three days to get to Mars.

45.词句猜测题。根据第三段“perhaps because ‘quantum’ stands for something cool you shouldn’t be able to understand.”可知,量子代表着难以理解的酷炫事物,这使得量子计算特别容易被炒作。prone在此处意为“容易的、倾向于的”,与open“易受……影响的”含义相近。故选A。
