What can you do with $20? Buy a few snacks or maybe a movie ticket and popcorn? In Kristina Ulmer’s classroom, $20 buys something far more powerful—a lesson in kindness that lasts a lifetime.
Ulmer, a high school English teacher in Pennsylvania, was heartbroken when her sister, Katie, died in a car accident. A police officer returned her sister’s purse to Ulmer and inside was $100. “Katie was always doing something to help people,” Ulmer said, “so I knew the money had to be used for good.” But what could she do?
Then in 2018, she had an idea. “It popped into my head that I could have my students do acts of kindness with my sister’s money when we were reading Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451,” she said. She took Katie’s money, added funds (资金) out of her own pocket and gave each of her students $20. Then she asked them to do an act of kindness in honor of Katie.
The project became known as the “$20 Challenge.” The students loved the idea. They used the money to do kind things for others and help people in need.
After the first year, the community began to donate (捐赠) to the challenge, which allowed Ulmer to continue it year after year.
As of last fall, Ulmer’s students have done over 350 acts of kindness in her sister’s memory. While the challenge has helped many people, Ulmer has seen how the experience has changed her students.
Ulmer continues to teach her students a valuable lesson: Kindness doesn’t have to be huge; it just has to be shared.
1. What inspired Kristina Ulmer to start the “$20 Challenge”?

C. To compare with the project’s influence.
3. Which of the following can replace the phrase “popped into my head” in Para. 3?
A. was remembered quickly. B. suddenly came to mind. C. was hit on the head.
4 What can we infer about the “$20 Challenge”?
A It was meant to honor Katie during one school term.
B. It required students to write reports about kindness.
C. It mostly depended on Ulmer’s personal funds at first.
5. What does Ulmer most likely want to teach her students through the project?
A. Money is important for helping others.
B. Small acts of kindness can make a real difference.
C. Community donations are necessary for continuing charity work.

On July 2, 1937, Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan left Lae, New Guinea, for Howland Island in the Pacific. This was without a doubt the longest and most dangerous part of their trip around the world. Earhart had trouble shortly after takeoff. The weather was stormy, so she had to fly at about 3,000 meters. Going this high, the plane used up gas (汽油) quickly.
After about 20 hours, Earhart and Noonan approached Howland Island. The island was only about a hundred kilometers away at this point, but the bright sun was shining in their faces, so they couldn’t see it. Near Howland, a ship, the Itasca, was waiting. Earhart contacted the ship. “Gas is low,” she said. The Itasca tried to keep in contact with her, but it got no response. Finally, the Itasca called for help. People searched for Earhart and Noonan for days. Despite great efforts, they found nothing.
Answers to a Mystery?
What happened to Amelia Earhart? No one knows for sure. During the flight, she likely headed in the wrong direction because the sun was bright and it was hard to see. Perhaps she and Noonan got lost somewhere over the Pacific; soon after, her plane ran out of gas, and she crashed into the sea. Another idea is that Earhart might have landed on a nearby, uninhabited island called Nikumaroro, where she later died. Researchers recently brought bone-sniffing dogs to the island, though, and no human bones were found. However, the dogs did detect the smell of bones—these bones could have been Earhart’s. A more extreme theory is that Earhart flew the plane to the Japanese-controlled Marshall Islands, a thousand kilometers to the north, and later secretly returned to the United States under a new name.
The first theory seems most likely. However, none of these ideas has been proven. Today, people are still investigating (调查) Earhart’s and Noonan’s disappearance. Whatever happened, Earhart probably died as she wished. “When I go,” she once said, “I’d like best to go in my plane.”
6. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. The Missing Pilot. B. Pilot Mystery Is Solved. C. America’s First Female Pilot.
7. Why was flying to Howland Island difficult according to the passage?
A. Noonan didn’t have a map.
B. The weather conditions were terrible.
C. It was very far from New Guinea.
8. Shortly after taking off from New Guinea, what happened?
A. A storm forced Earhart and Noonan to fly higher.
B. The Itasca made contact with Earhart and Noonan.
C. Earhart found there was little gas in their plane.
9. How many possibilities about the disappearance are mentioned in the passage?
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four.
10. In the last paragraph, when Earhart says “When I go, ...” what does go mean?
A. fly B. die C. leave

Why do some people overcome challenges while others give up? Carol S. Dweck explores this question in Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. The book’s main idea is simple but powerful: ____16____
According to Dweck, people have either a fixed mindset (固定思维) or a growth mindset. Those with a fixed mindset believe that abilities can’t be changed. ____17____ But those with a growth mindset believe they can improve with effort, and they often push themselves to grow.
Dweck explains that people with a growth mindset are more likely to have an interest in learning. ____18____ This kind of thinking encourages persistence (坚持不懈). Over time, that can lead to better results-not only in school but also in sports, relationships and work.
So how can you apply a growth mindset to your daily life? Dweck offers several practical suggestions. One important idea is to pay attention to your self-talk. ____19____ When you face something difficult, avoid saying, “I’m just not good at this.” Instead, say, “I’m not good at this yet.” That one word-yet-can change your whole attitude. It reminds you that you’re still learning and growing.
Another useful suggestion is to embrace (接受) challenges. Don’t back away from something just because it seems hard. ____20____ Dweck shares the stories of successful athletes and business leaders who kept pushing themselves after setbacks. Their growth mindset helped them stay motivated.
Finally, the book encourages readers to view effort as a strength, not a weakness. It’s effort that leads to lasting success.
A. When you fail, ask yourself how you can improve next time.
B. With this mindset we can all become better leaders.
C. The way we think about our abilities can shape our whole lives.

Do you often order take-out food? Have you ever tried a “take-out PE class”? This new kind of service was popular during this winter vacation.
To have a “take-out PE class”, you order it on social media. The coach will then come with all the things needed for the exercise. The classes include simple fitness training and sports like basketball and tennis. One-on-one lessons usually cost 200 to 400 yuan, Guangming Daily reported.
“It’s so convenient,” said a woman surnamed Wang whose child is in 4th grade. She used to spend an hour taking her child to the gym. “Now, the coach comes to the open area of our neighborhood, and I can watch from the balcony (阳台),” she said.
“Take-out PE classes” are convenient and helpful. “Before, my child often fell down when jumping rope. After three weeks of classes, he improved from 120 jumps a minute to 160,” Wang said. The coach makes a special plan for each child. This is more helpful than big classes.
But this new service also has problems. The Paper reported that most classes take place in neighborhood squares or parks. The ground is often too hard for running and jumping. In addition, many people walk by, and sometimes cars go through. This can be dangerous.
Many parents who order the classes have children preparing for high school entrance exams (中考). This is an “exam-first” way of thinking, which has changed the true meaning of exercise, noted Xinhua.

B. With this mindset, we can all become better leaders.
