It was a Tuesday night. In my apartment, I was doing three things at once—packing for a trip, trying to get dinner on the table and taking turns with my husband to calm a crying baby. Behind me, one work message after another popped up on my computer screen. I ignored them all. During dinner, a text appeared on my phone: “Where are you???” asked my colleague (同事).
I didn’t reply to the text. This wasn’t the first time I’d ignored a digital summons (召唤). ▲ , but I was also aware of what I wanted my silence to communicate: This is not a priority for me now.
For those who want to be polite, text-based digital communications can be extremely demanding (费力的). Ignoring a text message or an email feels rude, but should it?
Cal Newport, the author of A World Without Email: Reimagining Work in an Age of Communication Overload, has argued in his book that the etiquette of digital communications is and should be different from that of in-person or phone conversation, especially when it comes to the back and forth of hellos, goodbyes and other pleasantries (客套话). “In an in-person conversation, it can feel rude not to finalize an exchange,” he explained. “ But in the background of digital communication, the sender often prefers avoiding getting additional messages when possible.”
Besides, in an era when we understand more and more the importance of rest and time away from screens, it is essential to prioritize our peace of mind and relationships with the people in our lives: when we’re on vacation; when it’s after 7 p.m.; when we’re at the dinner table.
It’s also worth asking yourself who pushes you to reply right away. Perhaps it’s not the message sender, but you. A recent study found that we tend to overestimate our colleagues’ expectations for non- urgent work emails outside of work hours. So instead of criticizing yourself for not responding right away, consider slowing down and giving yourself a break.
18.Which of the following can be put in “▲”?
A.I didn’t mean to be disrespectful
B.I was just too busy to check my phone
C.I didn’t see the text from my colleague
D.I thought my colleague would know my situation
19.How does Cal Newport view the etiquette of digital communication compared to that of in-person conversation?
A.It should be the same. B.It should be given up.
C.It should be more formal. D.It should be less demanding.
20.What should we do according to the last paragraph?
A.Remember to put our family in the first place.
B.Find a good way to balance our work and life.
C.Realize the urgency and importance of our work.
D.Avoid pushing ourselves to respond to messages immediately.
21.Which of the following questions can be answered in the text?
A.Is it always rude to ignore digital communications?
B.Does politeness matter a lot in digital communications?
C.Why should we depend less on digital communications?
D.How can we express ourselves in digital communications?
D
Whether you are teaching an elementary Spanish class or passing on Spanish to your children, it is important to teach children good manners. And there are culturally proper behaviours that children need to know.
These five behaviours are considered good manners throughout Latin America. Of course, these are good manners in the USA too, but they are not given as much attention because the opposite behaviours are not considered particularly rude in Spanish- speaking countries. However, the opposite behaviours are negative and can change the impression people have of children (and adults)!
All of these good manners can be practised by children with different language levels.
Good manners to teach kids learning Spanish:
When you hand something to someone, put it directly into his or her hand. Do not toss things at people.★Keep your feet on the floor. Do not put your feet on chairs.
When you move away from a group of people or leave a room, say “con permiso”. Do not just walk away.
If someone sneezes, say “salud”, which means “take care” in English.
When you arrive, greet everyone. When you leave, say goodbye to everyone.
There are lots of resources for teaching children good manners in Spanish. Many polite behaviours also include language. Here you will find resources for teaching polite expressions, including books and a song. There are also videos that teach polite behaviours.
In my experience, kids are interested in what is considered polite behaviour in different cultures, and they want to learn to act properly. We work hard teaching them to use Spanish. It is important that they also know how to interact so that others are comfortable and they can make the most of the language they have learned.
22.The passage is probably written for ________.
A.travellers who will go abroad on holiday
B.teachers who are teaching in the Spanish class
C.parents who care about their children’s manners
D.children who want to pass their Spanish tests
23.The underlined word “toss” in the passage can be replaced by “________”.
A.send B.make C.throw D.look
24.According to the passage, which is considered a proper behaviour?
A.Jim keeps his feet on his friend’s chair.
B.Jim sneezes, and his friend gets angry with him.
C.Jim comes in and says good morning to his classmates.
D.Jim doesn’t say goodbye to everyone when he leaves a room.
25.The best title for the passage can be “________”.
A.Good Manners for Spanish Learners
B.The History of the Spanish Language
C.How to Behave Well in the Spanish Class
D.Some Ways of Teaching Children Spanish

In the eyes of many foreigners, the Chinese are the best hosts and the worst guests in the world. 26 It is because the guest-host relationship in China is quite different from that in some Western countries.
In China, guests are respected by hosts. Whenever I enter a Chinese friend’s home, there is always fruit on the table for me, and someone is quick to bring me a cup of tea or water. 27 Acting according to the host’s way of doing things is the usual behavior for a guest.
My wife’s mother is a very kind Chinese lady. She doesn’t smoke. When I see some of her guests smoking in her house, as a non-smoker, I feel unhappy. 28 But I must realize that in China, to be a good host, she must not do that.
In most North American homes, if you are a guest, and the hosts are not smokers, you should not smoke in their house. At the very least, you should ask, “Is it OK if I smoke?” But don’t be surprised if they say, “No, you can’t smoke.” 29 But if they don’t allow you to smoke in their house, they are not rude hosts.
In a word, no matter where you are, the best way to be a good guest is to adapt to (适应) the habits of your hosts. 30
A.In my culture, if you smoke in their house, you are a bad guest.
B.In the West, generally guests are not respected.
C.She never cares about it.
D.Just as the saying goes, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.”
E.And Western hosts sometimes look rude (粗鲁的) in the eyes of Chinese guests.
F.I think Chinese culture is almost the same as the Western culture.
G.Usually, I want to stop them directly.

I like traveling alone because it helps me relax and think things out for myself. Interested in the beauty of the Great Wall, I went to Badaling in Beijing by myself years ago.
At the gate, I was stopped by some people who were selling postcards. I was not interested in those postcards, so I refused to buy them. One short old woman followed me wherever I went. She advised me to buy some. Finally, I became angry. “Don’t you understand the meaning of ‘No’?” I shouted at her and left.
As soon as I walked on the Great Wall, I felt very excited. Then, halfway up, I suddenly realized I was on a dangerous road. It was no wider than a meter. And there were no walls. I felt terribly scared when the cold wind came up. Suddenly, I heard a soft voice behind me. It seemed that someone was telling me not to be afraid and saying she would help me. All the while, she repeated that everything would be fine behind me. As she held my hand to protect me from falling down, I was relaxed. Then, we reached a safe place. Feeling better, I turned around to see who was so kind. It was the short old woman. I felt sorry for what I had done. Then I showed my thanks to her and gave her a big hug.
Through this experience, I realized one thing: We should respect others. We never know what situation we’ll be in or when we’ll need help.

C
【答案】18.A 19.D 20.D 21.A
根据“I ignored them all. During dinner, a text appeared on my phone: ‘Where are you???’ asked my colleague (同事). I didn’t reply to the text. This wasn’t the first time I’d ignored a digital summons (召唤).”以及“but I was also aware of what I wanted my silence to communicate: This is not a priority for me now.” 故选A。
根据“Cal Newport, the author of A World Without Email: Reimagining Work in an Age of Communication Overload...the sender often prefers avoiding getting additional messages when possible.’”
根据“It’s also worth asking yourself who pushes you to reply right away...So instead of criticizing yourself for not responding right away, consider slowing down and giving yourself a break.”
根据“For those who want to be polite...Ignoring a text message or an email feels rude, but should it?” 故选A。

【答案】26.E 27.B 28.G 29.A 30.D
26.根据文章开头“In the eyes of many foreigners, the Chinese are the best hosts and the worst guests in the world…. It is because the guest-host relationship in China is quite different from that in some Western countries.”
27.根据文章第2段“In China, guests are respected by hosts. Whenever I enter a Chinese friend‘s home, there is always fruit on the table for me...Acting according to the host’s way of doing things is the usual behavior for a guest.”
28.根据第3段“My wife’s mother is a very kind Chinese lady. She doesn’t smoke. When I see some of her guests smoking in her house, as a non-smoker, I feel unhappy…. But I must realize that in China, to be a good host, she must not do that.”
29.根据第4段“In most North American homes…you should not smoke in their house…But don’t be surprised if they say, ‘No, you can’t smoke.’…But if they don’t allow you to smoke in their house, they are not rude hosts.” 故选A。
30.根据文章最后一段“In a word, no matter where you are, the best way to be a good guest is to adapt to the habits of your hosts.…Just as the saying goes, ‘When in Rome, do as the Romans do.’”

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I really don’t think it’s right for students to say dirty words.
Firstly, dirty words are disrespectful and can hurt others’ feelings deeply—even if we don’t mean it. They also create a negative atmosphere and make people uncomfortable in daily talks. Moreover, using such language shows a lack of self-control and damages our image as well-educated students.
To help others stop saying dirty words, we can politely remind them when they use bad language and explain why it’s harmful in specific situations. We can also set a good example by speaking kindly and respectfully ourselves. Encouraging positive communication and praising polite behavior can also make a difference.
Let’s work together to create a more respectful and friendly environment at school.
