Step 2
④逻辑线索:借助上下文中的逻辑关系词,如并列关系(and, or)、顺承关系(and)、让步转折关系(but, however, though, although, yet)、因果关系(because, so, so that, for, as a result...)、时间关系(before, after, when, as...)
【示例】第1题正确选项riders在文中倒数第二段的“to be a better rider”中出现,证实了该选项。
Step 3
The Picture of Peace
When Mike was seven, he knew his dream was to be a photographer. He kept working on it for years. Recently, he was trying to take a picture of a sunset(晚霞) to enter the school photo competition. ...
“The subject of the competition is peace,” Mike explained, “and I feel most peaceful seeing a sunset.” ...
That very afternoon, Mike felt excited when he saw clear skies. He carefully lined up his shot (镜头) and waited 1 till the sun reached the ground.
“That's it! Perfect!” he shouted cheerfully.
The next morning, Mike noticed he could take one more picture to complete the roll of film, so he walked into Zach's room. Zach was sleeping quietly with a teddy bear under his arm. Mike didn't wake Zach up, and carefully took a picture of him.
A week later, Mike got the photos. The sunset picture was the one he was most 2 to see. There it was! It was as nearly perfect as Mike had expected.
Then, he looked through the other photos. Suddenly, he stopped. His eyebrows (眉毛) rose as he 3 the photo of Zach. He looked back at the photo of the sunset, which seemed less perfect now. He 4 the two choices. Finally, he decided to hand in the photo of Zach for the competition.
1.A. politely B. bravely C. hopefully D. secretly
2.A. afraid B. eager C. surprised D. confused
3.A. studied B. shared C. copied D. fixed
4.A. changed B. offered C. accepted D. weighed
第2题A选项(害怕的)和D选项(疑惑的)与文意无关,可先排除;由下文的“It was as nearly perfect as Mike had expected.”
【示例】第2题考查be eager to do sth.(渴望做某事)。

The Big Race
“You got this! Keep going!”
The cheering of the crowd filled my mind as I continued to push myself forward. “I can’t 1 now,” I thought. All my hard work came down to this moment.
Before the race, I had spent several months waking up early each morning. The cool air swept through me as I ran out the front door, greeted by the 2 streets. The world became my very own training ground. This time was my favourite time of day.
I was born into a “running family”. My parents have taken part in many marathons (马拉松). My brother has followed in their steps and competes in at least 4 races in a year. Unlike him, I didn’t 3 fall into the running life. I put up a fight.
“Running is the best thing for you. I don’t know how people can 4 it,” my dad questioned during many dinner conversations.
“You would be a fool not to join the track (田径) team, Colleen,” my mom said seriously.

I don’t like heights. I never-have: I don’t mind being in a tall building or on a plane. But looking out over the top or a tall building, or even down from a tree, makes me feel a little dizzy (眩晕的).
I 1 this because it has a lot to do with something that happened to me a few years ago, I was with my friends at a lake, and we were having a good time swimming, boating, and playing cards.
On one of our camping trips, we came across a huge rock. It was much taller than a house, and it was right beside the 2 . The other kids thought it would be a great place for swimming. “It even was a perfect jumping rock!” said one of my friends. You can think about how I felt. I got in the water and swam around. I was the best swimmer, so I thought just in case something happened I would be in the water to 4 .
Everyone jumped off the rock many times, except me. “Hey John! You haven’t jumped yet,” said one of the girls. “Are you scared?” joked one of the boys. Soon, they were all chanting, “Jump, jump, jump!”

The Words That Changed Everything
I still remember the day clearly. It was during 7th grade. Two classes were going to play a game outside our classrooms. I was excited to join, but a classmate refused to let me play on her team.
Her refusal was enough to make someone feel unwanted. One of my friends asked her again and again, but the mean girl did not allow me to play. Back then, at eleven years of age, I did not know that someone’s opinion should not decide my 1 . It was a terrible moment, enough to hurt my heart badly.
2 , this wasn’t the only time I felt that way. Whether at school or home, I always felt down. People often blamed (责备) me for things I didn’t do, and I felt like I was falling behind everyone in every part of life.
However, life took a turn for the better in 9th grade. I accidentally scored high in an English test. My teacher’s surprise was clear, and so was the admiration in her eyes. Her encouragement was the first drop of rain, bringing new hope and life. She liked my work and lifted my 3 with a pat on the shoulder.
That moment had an amazing effect on me—it was a push to keep the same pace (节奏), 4 me to put all my effort to score good in every subject.
My science teacher also played an important role. I remember the exact words: “Seeing such a bright kid makes my heart fill with 5 .”
The encouragement and kindness from my teacher inspired (激励) me to continue working hard.
The feelings with those 6 memories remind me how small words of kindness play a powerful role in our lives. They can cause a complete paradigm shift Now, I didn’t care who looked down on me, or who refused me, I was ready to face the world with confidence.
Over time, writing became my way to express what I felt inside, a way to continue the legacy (精神传承) of my teachers, in 7 kind words. I started writing poems and thoughts about life and the world around me. Each word is a step forward, helping me understand myself better and giving me courage.

By the next morning, the red circles had turned into dark purple marks, making me afraid of going to school. At lunch, my best friend Pete 6 them curiously.
“Jake, what’s up with your head?” he asked loudly.

Brian Bristles was an artistic boy. He looked at everything as though it were a beautiful painting, and he could paint anything, filling it with magic and color.
One day, Brian and his grandfather decided to spend a weekend with an old friend, Marcus, who was a very famous chess player. When they arrived, Brian went into a large room and found a lovely chess set. However, he felt that the whole set looked quite boring because the pieces were too 1 and the board was just black and white.
So, that night, paint box in hand, he tiptoed (踮脚走) from his room to the chess room. There he spent the night painting each piece in the most colorful way. He also painted a beautiful scene on the chessboard. Brian hoped to use his art to 2 his grandfather and Marcus.
The next morning, when Marcus discovered that his pieces had been 3 in a thousand colors, instead of being pleased, he was very angry. He had a very important match to play. (2025·北京大兴·二模)Ever since the famous cubby thing in kindergarten, Summer and I haven’t got along one single bit. We argued over everything ever since then. That’s why what happened last month was so totally surprising.
We were both cast as (扮演) rabbits in our school’s winter play, Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Rabbit. During the first week of 1 , Summer and I did our best to ignore (忽视) each other.
Then, one day during the second week, our director Mr. Jackson said, “Summer and Arizona. I’d like to talk to you privately after practice.”
My heart started beating super fast. I thought about how I’d messed up in the forest dance and forgotten the words. Was I getting 2 out of the play? And why did Mr. Jackson want to talk to Summer and me together? Was it that obvious we were trying to stand as far apart from each other as possible?
My mind was spinning (旋转) with many nervous worries. So when I finally heard what Mr. Jackson had to say after practice, I was completely 3 !
“The two of you are such funny forest rabbits,” he told us. “I’d like you to 4 up and sing the ‘Funny Rabbit’ song all by yourselves.”
“Oh!” Summer said 5 . “Um…”
“Yeah, wow. Um…” I added awkwardly (尴尬地).
“I can tell you’re both a little nervous,” Mr. Jackson said. “And you can certainly say no, but I really think you two could make it!”
We both agreed and I’m glad we did, because you’ll never believe what happened. We ended up having an actual 6 !
And I remembered all those memories about how mean Summer had been. Well, it turned out that Summer remembered all of those 7 too. Only her memories were completely different-I had been the rude and unfriendly one.

On a stormy evening, Thomas was walking home from school alone as usual. The strong wind was blowing. His heart seemed especially 1 with his backpack full of unshared jokes and uneaten cookie halves. Suddenly, he heard a weak meow from the overflowing trash cans outside Mrs. Rosen’s house.
Kneeling down beside the trash cans, he saw a small gray cat whose foot was bleeding. Thomas took the cookies from his bag. His hands, usually clumsy (笨拙的) during games, moved 2 towards the shaking cat. Sensing no danger, the cat ate the cookies quickly and meowed again. Bring cat food!” Those six words lit up Thomas’s dark bedroom like the bright sunshine.
The next seven days totally changed Thomas's lonely routine. Mr. Miller, the owner of the pet store, taught him to prepare cat food. John became a daily visitor. His talk filled Thomas’s once-silent afternoons as they 5 names for the cat, who was finally named Whiskers. Even Mr. Evans, who lived next door and always answered coldly to Thomas’s greeting, started sharing fish cans and stories of his old cat.

On a sunny morning when Thomas was playing with Whiskers happily on the floor, three unexpected guests came with 6 —John with flea medicine, Lily with a handmade cat bed and Sarah with a ball. They talked and joked, enjoying a pleasant morning. Their 7 mixed with Whiskers’s purrs. Thomas found that being around people didn’t scare him as much anymore.
The playground still buzzed too loud, and group projects still made him nervous, but now when Thomas walked home, John was often with him to check on Whiskers.
根据“Every summer, Serena spent two weeks at Green Farm’s horseback riding camp.”
根据上文中的“I can’t wait to ride Piper”、下文中的“was a little scared (害怕的) at the sight of Harley”及语境可知,Serena不能骑她想骑的马,因此感到失望。故选B。
根据上文“As she was trying to ride Harley, he went up on his back legs, throwing Serena off.”

1.A. politely B. bravely C. hopefully D. secretly
2.A. afraid B. eager C. surprised D. confused
3.A. studied B. shared C. copied D. fixed
4.A. changed B. offered C. accepted D. weighed
[答案]1.C2.B3.A4.D
第2题A选项(害怕的)和D选项(疑惑的)与文意无关,可先排除;由下文的“It was as nearly perfect as Mike had expected.”
【示例】第2题考查be eager to do sth.(渴望做某事)。

Just as that small encouragement changed everything for me, I hope my words will express a message to others: kindness 8 , and small acts of encouragement can change a life.
