ADear editor,
We moved to this country 12 years ago, to be close to my husband's family for more support and Because the cost of living was lower. Now in my late 40s, I feel trapped in life abroad and want to move back to London.
The city we live in is known for its multiculturalism and diversity. Everything seemed to be working perfectly, until recently. The industry (I work in` is dominated by local people. It seems they are unwilling to allow me to join what they are doing and that I am excluded.
Seeing my eldest child leaving home and my youngest, still at school, becoming more independent
has made me realise how unhappy I am. I feel I have always disregarded my own needs.
I would like to go back to London right away. But our children feel at home here. I'm confused about what to do.
Yours,
Merrila
Dear Merrila,
Everything worked perfectly until recently. What happened? Something must have contributed to this. I've spent a long time reading your letter and wonder if your issue is a geographical one. The glass ceiling and ignorant people can and do exist in any city.
While those issues are problematic, I wonder if it's actually a reaction to such happenings: one of
your children is leaving home and the other one won't be far behind, and you're thinking: “What will
the next chapter of my life look like and have I done what I wanted to?”
Something magical happens to women in midlife when they realise it's time to put themselves front
and centre. You can talk with your husband about how you feel. In the short term, plan a trip to
London, meet up with some old friends and see what they say.
Yours,
Annalisa Barbieri

A. Being far away from London. B. Facing prejudice in the workplace.
C. Being at a loss about life changes. D. Overlooking her real needs for long.
21. 答案:B

It’s hard to talk to Dad sometimes. His silence about his feelings and thoughts made him mysterious and hard to see through. You could never break his hard shell and get to know him. And he seemed to want to stay that way too.
But a year ago when my relationship with my wife and career took a hit, I needed my dad to pull back the curtain so I could see him as real and accessible. I was facing serious problems, and I wanted to know whether he had faced them before and how he had found his way, because I felt like I had lost mine. In desperation, it occurred to me that sending an email might be the key, so I wrote him one, telling him about my regrets and fears, and I asked him to answer, if he felt like it.
Two weeks later, it showed up in my inbox: a much-thought, three-page letter. Dad, a 68-year-old retired technologist and grandfather of four, had carefully considered my message, and crafted a response. He mentioned his lost love, the foolish mistake he made in career and the stupid pride he had between him and his parents. He comforted me that “life will still find its right track despite many of its twists and turns”.
I closed the email and started to cry, because I wished I had opened it up earlier but was grateful it wasn’t too late. I cried because at 33, in the midst of my own struggles, his letter instantly put me at ease. And I cried because in the end, it was so simple: I just had to hit “Send”.
We’ve since had many email exchanges. This increasing communication opened a door into his world. My problems haven’t been magically solved, but getting to know my dad better has made the tough stuff more manageable and life sweeter. It’s hard to talk to dads sometimes, but I’m glad I found a way to talk to mine.
24. The author’s dad can be best described as _____.
A. quiet and caring B. optimistic and careless
C. selfish and lonely D. indifferent and serious
25. The underlined part in Paragraph 2 can be best replaced by “_____”.
A. draw the curtain B. become more optimistic
C. show his true self D. clear the misunderstanding
26. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Communication Is the Best Policy B. Emails from My Dad
C. A Man of Few Words D. My Mysterious Dad
27. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. My dad’s email was quickly written. B. I was moved when reading the email.
C. The email contained much information.
D. I wished I could have consulted him earlier.
24. 答案:A
解析:根据文中句子 “His silence about his feelings and thoughts made him mysterious and hard to see through.”
25. 答案:C
解析:根据文中句子 “I needed my dad to pull back the curtain so I could see him as real and accessible.”
27. 答案:A
解析:根据文中句子“Two weeks later, it showed up in my inbox: a much-thought, three-page letter.”

Many people listen to music throughout their day and often near bedtime to rest and relax. But can that cause your sleep to suffer?
The recent study of Michael Scullin, a sleep researcher at Baylor University, investigated the relationship between music listening and sleep, focusing on a rarely-explored mechanism known as an earworm, which refers to a song or tune that plays over and over in a person’s mind. Earworms commonly happen while people are awake, but Scullin found they can also happen while people are trying to sleep or even asleep.
“Everyone knows that listening to music feels good. Young people regularly listen to music near bedtime. But sometimes you can have too much of a good thing. The more you listen to music, the more likely you are to catch an earworm that won't go away at bedtime. When that happens, chances are your sleep is going to suffer,” Scullin said. People who experience earworms regularly at night – one or more times per week – are six times as likely to have poor sleep quality as people who rarely experience earworms. Surprisingly, the study found that some instrumental music is more likely to lead to earworms and affect sleep quality than lyrical music.
The study involved a survey and a laboratory experiment, finding that individuals with frequent music listening habits experienced continuous earworms and a decrease in sleep quality. These results are against the idea that music can help sleep. Health organizations commonly recommended listening to quiet music before bedtime – a recommendation that largely comes out of self-reported studies. Instead, Scullin has objectively measured that the sleeping brain continues to process music for several hours, even after the music stops.
Scullin recommends trying to moderate (缓和) music listening or taking occasional breaks if people are bothered by earworms. The timing of music is also important – try to avoid it before bed. Another way to get rid of earworms is to fully focus on a task, problem or activity so that you can ignore those earworms.
28. What is the focus of the study?
A. What kind of music makes for better sleep quality.
B. How music listening affects sleep through earworms.
C. Why earworms oily happen while people are awake.
D. How music listening contributes to our mental health.
29. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Lyrical music can help drive earworms off.
B. Sleeping too much can also cause health problems.
C. Young people are more likely to experience earworms.
D. Too much music listening can lead to poor sleep quality.
30. Paragraph 4 implies health organizations' suggestion on music listening probably_____.
A. fails to be widely accepted
B. lacks reliable scientific evidence
C. is effective in calming light sleepers
D. is carefully studied before being given
31. What can people do to get over earworms according to Scullin?
A. Choose the right time to sleep.
B. Avoid being too tired before bedtime.
C. Shift their attention to something else.
D. Get some professional medical treatments.
28. 答案:B
解析:定位:第二段…investigated the relationship between music listening and sleep, focusing on a rarely-explored mechanism known as an earworm…
29. 答案:D
解析:定位:第三段“Everyone knows that listening to music feels good… But sometimes you can have too much of a good thing. The more you listen to music, the more likely you are to catch an earworm… chances are your sleep is going to suffer.”
Health organizations commonly recommended listening to quiet music before bedtime – a recommendation that largely comes out of self-reported studies. Instead, Scullin has objectively measured…
Another way to get rid of earworms is to fully focus on a task, problem or activity so that you can ignore those earworms.
D
Can I talk about salary at work? In a word: yes. As HR company Insperity put it in a recent blog post: Can your employees discuss their salaries or wages with their co-workers? Yes. Even if you have a company policy against it? Yes.
The freedom to discuss your salary at work is a protected right under federal labor law. The National Labor Relations Act of 1935 protects your right to discuss the conditions of your employment, including issues related to safety and pay, even when you’re not protected by a union.
Talking about salary with colleagues can be uncomfortable, since there’s such a taboo about discussing money matters, but it’s an important step towards achieving equal pay for equal work. One barrier, however, arises from how we think of our own financial worth. Too many people I talk to wrongly consider their salary as a reflection of their worthiness, a statement about their skills, experience, or value. At the end of the day, if we can all separate our self-worth from our salaries a bit more, it’ll become easier to talk frankly with our colleagues.
Asking about money outright can be tough, so one trick I’ve picked up along the way is to ask for your colleagues to confirm or deny. For instance, you might volunteer your salary first and ask “Does that sound about right to you?” by way of comparison. Or, let’s say you’re interviewing for a promotion to become a manager. You might ask a fellow manager about the kind of salary you should expect by saying, “I’m seeing salaries for this kind of position ranging from $65,000 to $70,000—does that seem accurate to you?” This way, even if your colleague isn’t comfortable sharing their salary outright, they can help you identify if your expectations are on point or way off.
32. What makes co-workers uncomfortable to talk about salaries?
A. The safety issue. B. The federal labor law.
C. The wrong idea about salaries. D. The reflection of their worthiness.
33. What does “taboo” underlined in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. A prohibited practice. B. A religious belief.
C. A general agreement. D. A social custom.
34. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 4?
A. One of my interview experiences. B. My way of asking about salary.
C. The method of raising questions. D. An example of getting promoted.
35. What can be the best title for the text?
A. How to discuss salaries at work
B. Ways of talking about salaries
C. Do salaries stand for self-worth?
D. Can salaries be talked about at work?
32. 答案C
解析:由第三段中“Talking about salary with colleagues can be uncomfortable, since there’s such a taboo about discussing money matters,”可知,和同事谈论薪水让人不舒服,因为忌讳谈论金钱问题。
33. 答案A
35. 答案D
解析:文章开篇以“Can I talk about salary at work?”

Learning to Give a Pep Talk (打气)
Everyone wants to be the type of person who gives the critical talk that turns around a friend's outlook. However, giving a good pep talk isn't easy. 36.________ You need to not only listen and understand, but also stress the other person's strengths. You also need to know when to stop talking.
“A lot of people think they are giving a pep talk, but they are just saying what they would want to hear,” says Stacy Kaiser, a psychotherapist (心理治疗师) in Los Angeles.
Instead of instantly telling someone what to do, ask him what action he has thought about taking and why he thinks it will be beneficial. “Don't jump right in and insist ‘You'll be fine’,” says Kaiser. 37.________ Repeat the concerns for the person out loud, so he feels heard. Then, show your friend that you believe in him and that he has what it takes to get through this hard time. Stress his strengths.
38.________ You can't guarantee success, but you can remind the person that he has been through a tough time before and has gotten through it.
At last, Kaiser says you must know when to stop. “39.________ Don't argue if the person disagrees with what you are saying. Instead, tell him ‘I am sorry you are having such a hard time.’ And then back down.”
Kaiser says he has learned to give good pep talks by giving bad ones. He lost a number of loved ones during a short period. “Timing is everything.” There is a time to give a pep talk, and there is a time to just listen. 40.________
A.Let your friend have his moment.
B.Give your pep talk and then shut up.
C.Arguing with your friend makes no sense.
D.Show your friend that you understand why he is sad.
E.He isn't interested in what his best friends really need.
F.It requires an understanding of what your audience needs.
G.It is also important to remember that pep talks are about hope.

56. complaints 57. with 58. a 59. telling 60. When/After 61. yourselves 62. What 63. were eyeing 64. to hold 65. on
56. complaints(名词复数)
57. with(介词)
解析:return with sth.
拓展:类似搭配还有 come with sth.(带着某物来)、go with sth.(带着某物去)。
58. a(不定冠词)
考点:固定搭配(a collection of)。
59. telling(现在分词)
60. When/After(连词)
时)或 After(在……
61. yourselves(反身代词)
I→myself,he→himself,they→themselves。
62. What(连接代词)
63. were eyeing(过去进行时)
64. to hold(动词不定式)
拓展:类似用法,a pen to write with(用来写字的笔)、a box to put things in(用来放东西的盒子)。
65. on(介词)
拓展:同义短语还有 focus on、pay attention to。

As a sixth grader, I began noticing how other kids were separating into groups. I wasn't sure where I belonged. I found it hard to fit in.
Our teacher had assigned "secret friends" for the coming week. She wrote each kid's name on a piece of paper and threw them into a glass; then we each closed our eyes and drew the name of a classmate who we were to secretly befriend and support over the next five school days. By the middle of the week, everyone, including me, had turned this assignment into a contest to see whose secret friend could leave the best gift. We left cards, pens and even money. It seemed that everyone was getting cool presents from their friend except me.
On the last morning of our assignment, I walked into my classroom and noticed there was a package. I opened the wrapping paper and inside was a box of powder (胭脂粉). The girls sitting near me laughed at the gift I had received. To make matters worse, the powder had already been opened.
I tried to forget about the embarrassing gift, but when I was in the bathroom during the break, the girls who had seen me open the powder started speaking ill of my secret friend for giving it to me. I quickly joined in "How terrible", I heard myself saying "What could my friend be thinking by giving me such a stupid gift? My grandmother wouldn't even want it." The girls laughed at my remarks and rushed out of the bathroom. I stayed to wash my hands and let the water run through my fingers as I thought about what I had just said. It wasn't normal like me to say mean things like that about someone.

Then I saw my classmate Janet come out of a bathroom booth, tears streaming down her face. Her eyes met mine, and I froze. She whispered, "I... I thought you might like it. It was my mom's favorite when she was young." Her voice cracked, and I realized with a jolt—Janet was my secret friend! The powder, old but precious, was her way of sharing something meaningful. I felt my cheeks burn with shame as her words hit me. Before I could speak, she ran out, leaving me standing there, heart heavy with regret. I knew I had to fix this. I ran out of the bathroom and spotted her sitting alone on a bench under the big oak tree.
Along with my apologies, I explained the reason. "I'm so sorry, Janet. I was scared of not fitting in. The girls were making fun, and I stupidly joined in to be part of the group. But that's no excuse—I hurt you, and your gift deserves to be cherished." I held out the powder box, now gently closed. Janet looked up, her eyes still shiny but softening. "You really mean that?" she asked. I nodded. "It's the most thoughtful gift I've ever gotten. Thank you for being my secret friend." She smiled, and we sat together, talking until the bell rang. That day, I learned that true belonging isn't about following the crowd—it's about being kind and honest, even when it's hard.

C. show his true self D. clear the misunderstanding
26. What can be a suitable title for the text?

C. A Man of Few Words D. My Mysterious Dad
27. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. My dad’s email was quickly written. B. I was moved when reading the email.
C. The email contained much information.
D. I wished I could have consulted him earlier.

A. Lyrical music can help drive earworms off.
B. Sleeping too much can also cause health problems.

30. Paragraph 4 implies health organizations' suggestion on music listening probably_____.
A. fails to be widely accepted
B. lacks reliable scientific evidence
C. is effective in calming light sleepers
D. is carefully studied before being given
31. What can people do to get over earworms according to Scullin?

B. Avoid being too tired before bedtime.
C. Shift their attention to something else.
D. Get some professional medical treatments.

Para. 1
Then I saw my classmate Janet come out of a bathroom booth(厕所隔间), tears streaming down her face…….
Para. 2
Along with my apologies, I explained the reason. ……
