Rome can be pricey for travelers, which is why many choose to stay in a hostel (旅社). The hostels in Rome offer a bed in a dorm room for around $25 a night, and for that, you'll often get to stay in a central location with security and comfort.
Yellow Hostel
If I had to make just one recommendation for where to stay in Rome, it would be Yellow Hostel. It’s one of the best-rated hostels in the city, and for good reason. It’s affordable, and it’s got a fund atmosphere without being too noisy. As an added bonus, it’s close to the main train station.
Hostel Alessandro Palace
If you love social hostels, this is the best hostel for you in Rome. Hostel Alessandro Palace is fun. Staff members hold plenty of bar events for guests like free shots, bar crawls and karaoke. There’s also an area on the rooftop for hanging out with other travelers during the summer.
Youth Station Hostel
If you’re looking for cleanliness and a modern hostel, look no further than Youth Station. It offers beautiful furnishings and beds. There are plenty of other benefits, too; it doesn’t charge city tax; it has both air conditioning and a heater for the rooms; it also has free Wi-Fi in every room.
Hotel and Hostel Des Artistes
Hotel and Hostel Des Artistes is located just a 10-minute walk from the central city station and it’s close to all of the city’s main attractions. The staff is friendly and helpful, providing you with a map of the city when you arrive, and offering advice if you require some. However, you need to pay 2 euros a day for Wi-Fi.

Sandoval, who comes from Los Angeles, has traveled and filmed in over 50 countries across seven continents and now lives in China. “In 2008, tired of my studio work in the U.S, I came to China, with the hope of trying something different for myself.” he said.
Sandoval is a professional photographer and he went to Chengdu in Southwest China to live in October 2008 and has traveled throughout the country since then.
To him, Chengdu is the capital of a laid-back lifestyle. He was delighted to see that residents, dressed stylishly or comfortably, strolled in the streets “as slowly as snails”. Almost a “walking encyclopedia” of Chengdu, Sandoval covered every corner of Chengdu and recorded Chengduese and their lives with his camera, listening to the sound of mahjong being played and music from traditional stringed instruments.
He also goes from place to place with his heavy travel kit. The various culture and vast, beautiful land has kept him in China much longer than he had planned in the beginning. He remembers a wide range of adventures like exploring a local vineyard and local wine in Yinchuan City, a riding performance by a Mongolian ethnic group in the Shuidonggou Horse Riding Show, and then the totally different experience of visiting the Hainan Free Trade Port in the south.
He thinks he has done a lot in “this beautiful and vast country” with his “travel photos”. “I try to show people the beauty of where I go. I try to inspire them to travel and go to places. I’m hoping to do more international work,” he said.
24.Why did Sandoval come to China in 2008?
A.He was not good at studio work in the U. S.
B.He wanted to seek for something different.
C.He had a preference for international work.
D.He was attracted by China’s natural scenery.
25.What does the underlined word “laid-back” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Fast-paced. B.Healthy.
C.Leisurely. D.Simple.
26.Sandoval’s experiences around China are mentioned in Paragraph 4 to show .
A.his fascination for Chinese culture
B.his superb photo technique
C.his desire for new careers
D.his diverse hobbies
27.What is the writing purpose of this passage?
A.To praise Sandoval for his studio work in the U. S.
B.To facilitate the development of tourism in Chengdu.
C.To call on readers to take up photography as a hobby.
D.To introduce the experience of a foreign photographer in China.
C
The “hedgehog (刺猬) dilemma” is a famous metaphor from German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer. In his 1851 book, he described how humans struggle with relationships through a story about hedgehogs. His advice was simple: keep your distance.
This sad story became widely discussed. Sigmund Freud and modern scientists studied this idea. In 2015, an award-winning short film called Hedgehog retold this story.
How does this apply to real life? Most people remember being hurt by close relationships – broken friendships, family conflicts, or romantic betrayals. Since these connections matter deeply, their damage hurts more. Should we stop trusting others? Schopenhauer said yes, but science would say otherwise.
A study in PLOS Medicine reviewing 148 studies with over 300,000 people found those with strong social connections live 50% longer. The National Institute on Aging warns that loneliness harms health as much as smoking 15 cigarettes daily – making Schopenhauer’s advice concerning.
When hurt repeatedly, people often fall into defense mode. Relationship expert Hilary Sanders explains common defense behaviors: going silent during arguments, seeing normal comments as criticism, or overreacting to small issues. These reactions often start in childhood. If parents often criticized or classmates bullied someone, they might develop habits like pretending not to care or getting angry easily. While these helped survive childhood pain, they cause problems in adult relationships when used unconsciously.
The good news is people can change. Through therapy, many learn to recognize their defense patterns and understand their origins. Couples can improve relationships by learning each other’s emotional triggers and responding thoughtfully instead of arguing. However, Sanders warns that defenses shouldn’t be removed suddenly — it’s like taking down a wall brick by brick.
Although Schopenhauer focused on the pain of closeness, the hedgehog story actually shows our deep need for connection. Unlike real hedgehogs, humans aren’t born with physical spines. By carefully lowering our defenses around trustworthy people, we might truly enjoy both warmth and safety in relationships.
28.Why does the author mention the hedgehog dilemma in paragraph 1?
A.To stress its importance. B.To support Schopenhauer’s advice.
C.To recommend Schopenhauer’s book. D.To introduce the theme of relationship.
29.What is Schopenhauer’s key solution to the “hedgehog dilemma”?
A.Ignore pain. B.Seek therapy.
C.Avoid closeness. D.Build walls.
30.What major evidence goes against Schopenhauer’s advice?
A.Freud’s studies. B.Long life from social ties.
C.Henry’s short film. D.Defense behavior of people.
31.What does Sanders say about close connection?
A.People should make gradual progress in it.
B.Humans can benefit from it unconsciously.
C.It can help children relieve childhood pain.
D.Couples should learn to defend it thoughtfully.
D
We all know that water is tasteless. But it happens from time to time: you pick up the bottle of water you didn’t finish yesterday, and it tastes strange. Most often, you tend to drop the bottle in the trash bin, believing that the water has gone bad. But is it true?
According to Time, of course not, taste has little to do with quality of water. As is mentioned in Time, when water is exposed to the air for 12 hours, carbon dioxide interacts with the H2O in the water, and the pH value lowers slightly. As a result, the water has a different taste.
“But it’s most likely safe to drink,” Norwegian expert Truls Krogh told Science Nordic. “If the water is covered and of good quality to start with, in principle it can last a thousand years. That’s because when water is fresh, it contains little organic matter. As long as water is held in clean glasses or bottles, no pollutants will enter it to harm our health.”
People in countries like the US, the UK and Australia usually drink tap water. According to Time, if tap water is drunk within six months, the chlorine (氯气) in the water will be enough to kill any bacteria and keep it safe to drink.
However, there are also some exceptions. If you accidentally put your fingers into water or store water in unclean containers day after day, microorganism (微生物) will enter the water. With the help of surrounding temperature, and sunlight streaming through windows, these microorganisms multiply quickly. Sooner or later, the water will be full of the unfriendly bacteria. And if you drink the water too often, then you’re more likely to be ill.
And what about water in plastic bottles? Heat and plastic are a bad combination, US researcher Kellogg Schwab stresses. When plastic bottles are used at high temperatures, they produce a chemical called BPA.BPA is something that affects hormones (荷尔蒙) and research has tentatively linked it to “several health damage, including heart disease and cancer”, Time reported.
Schwab suggests replacing disposable (一次性的) plastic bottles with the refillable containers made of metal or glass to deal with BPA.
32.The purpose of the first paragraph is to ________.
A.introduce a topic B.draw a conclusion
C.show an example D.analyze a phenomenon
33.Which of the following may Truls Krogh agree?
A.Covered water can last for a thousand years.
B.If the water tastes different, we shouldn’t drink it.
C.Although kept fresh, water may still have much organic matter.
D.The water held in a clean container is likely safe to drink.
34.Why do water microorganisms increase in number?
A.Because the water is stored in clean containers.
B.Because of the surrounding temperature and sunlight.
C.Because the water contains a lot of organic matter.
D.Because chlorine in the water fails to kill bacteria.
35.What can be the best title of the passage?
A.Why Water Is Tasteless B.How to Get Clean Water
C.Does Water Really Go Bad? D.Learn to Protect Water

第二节 (满分 25 分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was in middle school, my family moved to Seattle, where my parents started their new business — a small grocery store downstairs in my house. As a girl of shy and reserved nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the sophisticated city life.
One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent show for the local food bank. Students were encouraged to showcase their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day. A buzz of excitement filled the school as everyone began preparing for the big day. Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate. However, my self-doubt held me back, “I don’t have any special skills to share.”
Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer. I couldn’t shake the upsetting feeling until one day Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after class. “How about singing together in the talent show?” she grinned. “I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home. I can’t help following you here.” Dear, I couldn’t believe my ears. Emma, with personality and popularity, acknowledged my little talent. Since Emma had the world’s prettiest voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune.
“You two? The talent show for the food bank?” My mum bent towards us and her face lit up. “Why not practise right now upstairs? I bet you’ll be a perfect match.” Winking at us, she seemed to know we were thinking alike.
Emma and I embarked on rehearsing almost every single day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene. As the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act. But the day before the performance, Emma called saying that she had an acute stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.

Hotel and Hostel Des Artistes
Hotel and Hostel Des Artistes is located just a 10-minute walk from the central city station and it’s close to all of the city’s main attractions.

Dear Jack,
Hearing that you’re interested in learning about the Dragon Boat Festival, I’m more than delighted to share some fascinating details with you.
The Dragon Boat Festival, one of the most culturally significant celebrations in China, takes place on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. It’s a special occasion when people gather together to honor the patriotic poet Qu Yuan, who sacrificed his life by drowning in the Miluo River. During the festival, people engage in thrilling dragon boat races and indulge in zongzi — sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves. These customs not only bring the community closer but also serve as a reflection of deep-rooted cultural values.
I truly hope that you’ll have the opportunity to visit China and experience this vibrant festival at first hand. I’m certain it will be a memorable experience for you!
Best regards,
Li Hua

I was completely knocked out by the news. My heart sank, and I didn’t know what to do. “How can I perform alone?” I asked myself, tears welling up. But my mom said gently, “You’ve practiced so hard; don’t let fear stop you.” That night, I stayed up thinking about whether I should go on stage by myself. Finally, I decided that I would try, because it was for the food bank.
Finally came the big moment. As I walked onto the stage, my hands were shaking, and I could hardly breathe. I closed my eyes and remembered the days when Emma and I sang together, which gave me courage. When I opened my mouth, my voice came out clear and steady. The audience clapped warmly, and I felt proud of myself for the first time. What mattered most was not perfection, but that I dared to try.

【原文】 For a long time, people have been burying their garbage. Unfortunately, there is less and less empty land that can be used as garbage places in our planet today. Yet more and more garbage is being produced each year. How should we manage our garbage? Do we have enough energy sources to meet our future energy needs? These are two of the most important questions in the modern world. And many people are trying to find the answers. Some people think that we might be able to solve both problems at the same time. They suggest that garbage should be used as an energy source. For example, some cities in the United States have been burning garbage to create fuel for years. But studies have shown that it is not a good idea. Burning garbage for energy causes many serious problems. Garbage that burns easily, such as plastics and paper, must be separated from metals, glass and other materials that do not burn easily. This separation process is very costly, therefore not being done in most places. Another huge problem with burning garbage is air pollution.

【答案】28.D 29.C 30.B 31.A

In his 1851 book, he described how humans struggle with relationships through a story about hedgehogs. His advice was simple: keep your distance.( “刺猬困境”是德国哲学家叔本华的一个著名比喻。

根据第四段“A study in PLOS Medicine reviewing 148 studies with over 300,000 people found those with strong social connections live 50% longer. The National Institute on Aging warns that loneliness harms health as much as smoking 15 cigarettes daily – making Schopenhauer’s advice concerning.(《公共科学图书馆·医学》杂志上的一项研究回顾了148项涉及30多万人的研究,发现那些社交关系强的人寿命要长50%。美国国家老龄化研究所警告说,孤独对健康的危害与每天吸15支烟一样大——这使得叔本华的建议令人担忧。)”可知,社交关系带来的长寿这一主要证据,与叔本华的建议相悖。故选B项。
31.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中“However, Sanders warns that defenses shouldn’t be removed suddenly — it’s like taking down a wall brick by brick.( 然而,桑德斯警告说,防御不应该突然拆除,就像一砖一瓦地拆墙一样。)”可知,桑德斯认为人们在建立亲密关系时,不应突然去除防御,要像一砖一瓦拆除墙一样循序渐进。故选A项。

【答案】32.A 33.D 34.B 35.C
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了水放置一段时间后味道改变的原因,探讨了水是否真的变质,以及不同存储条件下水的情况。
32.推理判断题。根据第一段“We all know that water is tasteless. But it happens from time to time: you pick up the bottle of water you didn’t finish yesterday, and it tastes strange. (我们都知道水是没有味道的。但这样的事时有发生:你拿起昨天没喝完的那瓶水,尝起来味道怪怪的)”可知,该段通过生活现象引出本文话题,所以第一段目的是引入话题。故选A项。
33.细节理解题。根据第三段“If the water is covered and of good quality to start with, in principle it can last a thousand years. That’s because when water is fresh, it contains little organic matter. As long as water is held in clean glasses or bottles, no pollutants will enter it to harm our health.(如果水被覆盖,质量好,原则上可以持续一千年。这是因为当水新鲜时,它含有很少的有机物。只要水装在干净的玻璃杯或瓶子里,就不会有污染物进入其中损害我们的健康))”可知,特鲁尔斯·克罗格认为装在干净容器里的水可能是可以安全饮用的。故选D项。
34.细节理解题。根据第五段“With the help of surrounding temperature, and sunlight streaming through windows, these microorganisms multiply quickly. (在周围温度和透过窗户的阳光的帮助下,这些微生物迅速繁殖)”可知,水中的微生物数量增加是因为周围温度和阳光。故选B项。
35.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其根据第一段“We all know that water is tasteless. But it happens from time to time: you pick up the bottle of water you didn’t finish yesterday, and it tastes strange. Most often, you tend to drop the bottle in the trash bin, believing that the water has gone bad. But is it true?(我们都知道水是没有味道的。

Dear Jack,
Hearing that you’re interested in learning about the Dragon Boat Festival, I’m more than delighted to share some fascinating details with you.
Best regards,
Li Hua

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 续写部分分为两段,每段开头语已为你写好。

Paragraph 2:
Finally came the big moment.

【答案】
