He noticed that from 1999 to 2001, it was hot and dry. But the year after 2001 was the driest on record. Water levels in the Colorado River were dropping rapidly. This was the beginning of a serious drought. Everyone began asking, “How long will it last?” Meko, a scientist at the University of Arizona, believed that he could find the answer in the trees. Meko is a tree-ring expert and studies the influence of rainfall on wood layers (层). Each year, a tree adds a new layer of wood. These layers look like a series of rings, which are called tree rings. During times of heavy rainfall, a ring is wide. When there is a shortage of water, a ring is narrow. These rings are nature’s record of rainfall and climate change. To find out how long earlier droughts lasted, Meko and his team started a new research project. The team collected and tested many wood samples (样本) from 1, 200 years ago until the present. Meko’s new research showed that it was a wet time in Arizona in the 20th century. Trees from this period had wide, healthy rings. Rain was rich. During that century, millions of people moved to the region. Before that time, however, the rings showed that droughts regularly happened. In fact, drought was part of the usual climate pattern. How long will the current drought last? Experts say it may continue for another 50 years, according to the nature’s clues (线索) from the past. This is a serious problem for people in the area. They will probably not leave the area, but they will need to conserve water during this long dry period. 9. Which year was the driest on record according to the text? A. 1999. B. 2000. C. 2001. D. 2002. 10. What is the main idea of paragraph 2? A. A shortage of water. B. An introduction to Meko. C. The record of rainfall in Arizona. D. The influence of rainfall on wood layers. 11.
