The Four Forces of Human Nature—Understand Your Behavior with Science
If you’ve ever wondered why you react to stress, want to connect with others, or think too much, The Four Forces of Human Nature: A Unifying Theory by Roberto Treviño Peña offers a new, science-based way to understand behavior. It combines brain science, the study of the mind, and a smart comparison to physics, turning complex ideas into a practical guide for learning about yourself.
What’s the Core Idea?
Peña describes human behavior through four “forces”—related to emotion, thinking, communication, and social environment—each linked to key brain parts:
Affective Force (Amygdala):
The “fast natural reaction” driver, in charge of quick “like or fear” judgments that form our emotional natural responses.
Cognitive (认知的) Force (Thalamus):
The thinking engine, helping with memory, working things out, and making sensible choices.
Communicative Force (Cerebral Cortex):
The social link, driving our wish to connect, work together, and share our thoughts.
Socio-Environmental Force (Insular Cortex):
The “bonding guide,” connecting us to people, things, or ideas that make life meaningful (for example: devotion to a group or love for a hobby).
The model explains why we focus on certain goals and feel unsatisfied when these forces are out of balance.
Who is This for?
Whether you enjoy self-improvement, are a curious reader, or want clear insights instead of unclear advice, this book is easy to understand and engaging. Peña uses everyday examples—like why a stressful email makes your amygdala react—to make brain science useful and easy to put into action. You’ll learn to notice when emotion is stronger than reason and how to improve communication for better relationships.
Ready to stop guessing and start living with more purpose? Let The Four Forces of Human Nature: A Unifying Theory be your guide.

After a wait of 22 years, Barbara Morgan finally achieved her lifetime dream. The spaceship Endeavor was launched on August 8, carrying her and six other crew members into space.
Morgan, a former school teacher, was on a two-week trip to the International Space Station (ISS). This makes her the first professional teacher who has experienced flying in space. Morgan’s main duties include taking goods from Endeavor to the ISS and controlling the spaceship’s robotic arms to help set up new station hardware. She will also teach a six-hour course to students on the Earth. She took a plant with her onto the spaceship. She will use it to explain how plants grow in space. Morgan hopes that it will encourage students to think about how future astronauts might grow food on missions to the moon and Mars. “The task force highlighted the need to motivate students to pursue the science and engineering fields,” said Morgan in a preflight interview.
Morgan was a 55-year-old elementary school teacher before she became an astronaut. She was chosen as the backup candidate for NASA’s Teacher in Space program in 1985.But it was not until 1998 that she became a full-time astronaut. During her training she witnessed two spaceflight tragedies (悲剧) — the 1986 Challenger explosion and the 2003 Columbia accident. But she was not put off. Something deep inside of her made her push on with the work.
“There’s nothing more important than our kids and our future and keeping their future open-ended,” said Morgan. Morgan also hopes that her flight will be the first of many journeys for astronauts who are also educators. After her return to the Earth last Wednesday, Morgan wishes to continue her beloved career — being an elementary school teacher.
24. During the mission, Morgan played the following roles except ______.
A. a supply transporter B. a botanical expert C. an astronaut educator D. a technical operator
25. What does the underlined phrase “put off” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Delayed. B. Deserted. C. Dismissed. D. Discouraged.
26. Which of the following best describes Morgan?
A. Curious and humorous. B. Creative and adventurous.
C. Ambitious and generous. D. Forward-thinking and dedicated.
27. What does Morgan’s experience show?
A. Better late than never. B. Practice makes perfect.
C. Where there is a will, there is a way. D. When one door closes, another opens.

Managers are better equipped than ever to make good decisions. They are more aware that human judgment is subject to errors. They have tons of data about their customers and products. They can use artificial intelligence (AI) to analyse, summarize and process information with once-impossible speed. But as companies shift from relying on instincts (直觉) to making decisions based on data, they need to be alive to a different set of risks.
In a recent paper Linda and her co-authors identify a bias that they call “quantification fixation”. The risk of depending on data alone for judgment is familiar: it is sometimes referred to as the McNamara fallacy But Linda and her co-authors help explain why people put disproportionate weight on numbers through an experiment.
In the experiment, participants were asked to imagine choosing between two software engineers for a promotion. One engineer had been assessed as more likely to climb the ladder but less likely to stay at the firm; the other, by contrast, had a higher probability of staying but a lower chance of advancement. The researchers varied the way that this information was presented. They found that participants were more likely to choose on the basis of future promotion prospects when only that criterion was quantified, and to select on staying probability when that was the thing with a number attached.
One answer to this bias is to quantify everything. But not everything translates cleanly into numbers. A firm’s culture is harder to express as a number for job-seekers than its salary levels. Data can tell an early-stage investor more about a startup’s financials than a founder’s resilience (韧性). The problem is that they do not always tell the whole story.
This is not to claim that humans always make better decisions than machines. Far from it. But it is a warning. Numbers promise precision, certainty and objectivity. They have imperfections, too.
28. What best defines the “McNamara fallacy” in paragraph 2?
A. Prioritizing quality over quantity. B. Underestimating the development of AI.
C. Overvaluing instincts in judgment. D. Making decisions merely based on data.
29. What can be inferred about data from Linda’s experiment?
A. They eliminate subjective criteria. B. They enhance people’s freedom of choice.
C. They facilitate comparison effectively. D. They illustrate the complexity of assessment.
30. What is paragraph 4 mainly about regarding the quantification of everything?
A. The methods. B. The principles. C. The limitations. D. The applications.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Maximize the Value of Data B. Be Alert to the Dangers of Data
C. Identify Biases through Data D. Accept the Imperfections of Data
D
In the past, fireproofing materials were made with poisonous, flame-proofing chemicals. These have been replaced with other chemicals, which are considered safer, but some studies have linked these alternatives with brain damage and harm to water creatures. Tien Huynh at a University in Melbourne, Australia, and her colleagues have developed a more eco-friendly fireproofing material using mycelium — the root-like structure of fungus (真菌).
They grew mycelium from the fungus that can be eaten in containers of liquid molasses — a byproduct of sugar production. The mycelium grew as blankets on top of the molasses, which the researchers removed and dried before pressing them into millimetre-thin sheets. When the mycelium sheets were exposed to 800℃ flames, an outer layer of char (碳化) was quickly generated to prevent the rest of the sheets from burning.
“The material caught fire for about one second then ceased burning,” Huynh says. “The sheets only produced water and carbon dioxide (CO2) when they were set on fire, making them safer than existing fireproofing chemicals.”
The team now hopes to develop fire-resistant coating for homes and other buildings out of the fungus, which could be applied as a wallpaper-thin sheet or made into thicker panels. “The material appears to be highly durable,” says Huynh. Her team previously used it to make bricks, and she says she has had one sitting in her room for 10 years that hasn’t shown any signs of breaking down. “I can still jump on it because it’s so strong,” she says. “The fungus is killed during the drying process, so there is no danger of mushrooms growing out of the sheets.”
However, scaling up production of the material could be challenging. “The fungus don’t need light or electricity to grow, but they do need a big space if you want to grow enough for the building industry,” says Huynh. “Because they’re biological organisms, they’re also easy to be polluted (污染).” But Huynh mentions that her team has been approached by industry groups that may be able to assist with this scale-up process.
32. How is paragraph 1 organized?
A. History → Current state → Future prediction
B. Problem → Existing solution → New solution
C. Description → Definition → Recommendation
D. Assumption → Supporting details → Conclusion
33. What stops the mycelium sheets from burning?
A. The application of liquid molasses. B. The absorption of heat by inner parts.
C. The formation of a protective cover. D. The release of fire-proofing chemicals.
34. How does Huynh emphasize the material’s durability?
A. By giving an example. B. By quoting others.
C. By making a comparison. D. By using statistics.
35. What does Huynh think of the production scale-up of the material?
A. It is unlikely. B. It is easily achievable.
C. It is unrealistic. D. It is cautiously promising.

The downside of creating good habits
Habits create the foundation for mastery. In chess, it is only after the basic movements of the pieces have become automatic that a player can focus on the next level of the game. Each unit of information that is memorized opens up the mental space for more effortful thinking. ____36____ When you know the simple movements so well that you can perform them without thinking, you are free to pay attention to more advanced details. In this way, habits are the backbone of any pursuit of excellence.
However, the benefits of habits come at a cost. At first, each repetition develops fluency, speed, and skill. ____37____ You fall into mindless repetition. It becomes easier to let mistakes slide. When you can do it well enough on autopilot, you stop thinking about how to do it better.
The upside of habits is that we can do things without thinking. The downside of habits is that you get used to doing things a certain way and stop paying attention to little errors. ____38____ In reality, you are merely reinforcing your current habits — not improving them. In fact, some research has shown that once a skill has been mastered there is usually a slight decline in performance over time.
____39____ To achieve top levels of performance, you need a refined approach. You can’t repeat the same things blindly and expect to become exceptional. What you need is a combination of automatic habits and deliberate practice. After one habit has been mastered, you have to return to the effortful part of the work.
Old tasks become easier the second time around, but it doesn’t get easier overall because now you’re pouring your energy into the next challenge. Each habit unlocks the next level of performance. ____40____
A. It’s an endless cycle.
B. This is true for any attempt.
C. Next, you will get more positive feedback.
D. Habits are necessary, but not sufficient for mastery.
E. With habits like these, good enough is usually good enough.
F. You assume you’re getting better because you’re gaining experience.
G. But then, as a habit becomes automatic, you become less sensitive to feedback.

A chance encounter
Jessica, a writer with a long-held dream, felt her hope slipping away. For years, she had worked on a book about a special local sports story. It was about a small-town basketball team’s amazing journey to the state finals. She believed it could encourage many, but after countless rewrites, every publisher still said no. The dream began to feel impossible.
One quiet morning, hoping to find some fresh ideas, she put on the shirt with a picture of her favourite music band and took her notebook to the bookstore downstairs that housed a café. The smell of coffee and paper always comforted her. However, the main area was crowded, so she found a chair between the cooking and travel shelves. She settled in and lost herself in creation.
Suddenly, a voice interrupted her. “Excuse me, miss,” an old man said softly. He was reaching for a cookbook on the shelf behind her and needed her to move her chair slightly. As she shifted to make room, she noticed his sweatshirt had the same picture as her shirt. Obviously, he noticed it too. They exchanged a smile and began to talk.
As the talk went on, Jessica learned that the old man named John was a writer too, and had even published books with his wife. Encouraged by his kindness and experience, Jessica finally gathered the courage to share her own dream — the book about the basketball team. Once she started, the words poured out. She told him about the hard work she had put into the book. “Publishers keep saying no,” she sighed. “I’m out of energy.”
John leaned in, gentle but firm. “Why wait for them? That story’s too good to be forgotten. Publish it yourself.” He stressed that her book was worth all the effort she’d put in, and told her not to let others’ “no” stop her from following her dream.

W: I heard that your family moved house recently.
M: Yes, we moved to a village about five kilometres out of town. It’s a modern house with a big land.
W: Wow, that sounds fantastic! It must be really peaceful.
M: You know, it’s true that I sleep better there. But I have lessons in the evening, so I spend hours waiting for buses. I used to just walk everywhere.
W: Hmm. I’ve never really thought about that. We’re right in the centre of town, so everything’s so close. Where did the idea of moving to the countryside come from?
M: Well... my mum had always wanted to live in the country and my dad likes doing DIY projects, and lots of things in the house are broken, so there’s plenty for him to do. Actually, I’m the only one who’s not exactly pleased.
W: Well, I wouldn’t mind! I’d give anything to live in the countryside.
M: I’m not so keen on it. But in a couple of years I’ll be going off to university, so I’ll just put up with it until then.

21. What is Roberto Treviño Peña?
A. A physicist. B. A book critic. C. A publisher. D. A brain specialist.
22. Which brain region mainly handles logical reasoning?

B 25. D 26. D 27. C

D 29. C 30. C 31. B
根据第二段“The risk of depending on data alone for judgment is familiar: it is sometimes referred to as the McNamara fallacy (麦克纳马拉谬误).(仅依赖数据来做判断的风险并不陌生:它有时被称为“麦克纳马拉谬误”。)”
根据第三段“They found that participants were more likely to choose on the basis of future promotion prospects when only that criterion was quantified, and to select on staying probability when that was the thing with a number attached.(他们发现,当只有未来晋升前景这一项标准被量化时,参与者更可能根据这一标准来选择;而当长期留任概率这一项被量化时,他们则更倾向于根据留任概率来选择。)”
根据第四段“One answer to this bias is to quantify everything. But not everything translates cleanly into numbers. A firm’s culture is harder to express as a number for job-seekers than its salary levels. Data can tell an early-stage investor more about a startup’s financials than a founder’s resilience (韧性). The problem is that they do not always tell the whole story.(应对这种偏见的一个办法是将所有事物都量化。但并非所有事物都能清晰地转化为数字。对求职者而言,公司的文化比薪资水平更难用数字来描述。对于早期投资者来说,数据能让他们更多地了解一家初创企业的财务状况,却难以反映创始人的韧性。问题在于,数据并不总能揭示全部真相。)”可知,第四段主要讲的是量化一切的局限性,故选C。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“But as companies shift from relying on instincts (直觉) to making decisions based on data, they need to be alive to a different set of risks.(然而,随着企业从依赖直觉转向基于数据做决策,它们需要警惕另一类风险。)”和最后一段“This is not to claim that humans always make better decisions than machines. Far from it. But it is a warning. Numbers promise precision, certainty and objectivity. They have imperfections, too.(这并不是说人类做出的决策总是优于机器。远非如此。但这是一种警示:数字承诺了精确性、确定性和客观性,但它们也有不完美之处。)”可知,本文主要讲的是企业在从依赖直觉转向基于数据做决策的过程中所面临的潜在风险,因此最好的题目是B选项“Be Alert to the Dangers of Data(警惕数据的危险)”。故选B。
B 33. C 34. A 35. D

上文“Habits create the foundation for mastery. In chess, it is only after the basic movements of the pieces have become automatic that a player can focus on the next level of the game. Each unit of information that is memorized opens up the mental space for more effortful thinking. (习惯为精通奠定基础。在国际象棋中,只有当棋子的基本走法变得自动时,棋手才能专注于比赛的下一阶段。每一个被记住的信息单元都为更费力的思考打开了心智空间)”通过国际象棋的类比阐述了习惯如何释放认知资源以追求更高层次。B选项“This is true for any attempt. (这对于任何尝试都是如此)”承接上文,指出上文所阐述的习惯释放认知资源的原理具有普遍适用性。下文“When you know the simple movements so well that you can perform them without thinking, you are free to pay attention to more advanced details. (当你对简单动作了如指掌,可以不假思索地完成时,你就能自由地关注更高级的细节)”则进一步具体描述这一状态。故选B项。
【37题详解】
上文“At first, each repetition develops fluency, speed, and skill. (起初,每一次重复都能提升流畅度、速度和技巧)”描述了习惯养成的积极初期阶段。G选项“But then, as a habit becomes automatic, you become less sensitive to feedback. (但随后,随着习惯变得自动,你对反馈的敏感度会降低)”通过“But then”与上文构成时间与逻辑上的转折,指出习惯自动化后的转变。下文“You fall into mindless repetition. It becomes easier to let mistakes slide. When you can do it well enough on autopilot, you stop thinking about how to do it better. (你会陷入无意识的重复。更容易放任错误。当你能靠自动导航做得足够好时,你就会停止思考如何做得更好)”则具体描述了“对反馈敏感度降低”所导致的一系列消极后果。故选G项。
【38题详解】
上文“The upside of habits is that we can do things without thinking. The downside of habits is that you get used to doing things a certain way and stop paying attention to little errors. (习惯的好处是我们可以不假思索地做事。习惯的坏处是你习惯于某种方式做事,不再关注小错误)”总结了习惯的双刃剑特性。F选项“You assume you’re getting better because you’re gaining experience. (你因为获得了经验,就以为自己正在变得更好)”承接上文,解释了为何人们会忽视错误、停止改进——因为他们错误地将经验的积累等同于能力的提升。下文“In reality, you are merely reinforcing your current habits — not improving them. (实际上,你只是在强化当前的习惯——而非改进它们)”则用“In reality”对上文的错误认知进行纠正,形成“错误认知—现实真相”的逻辑呼应。故选F项。
【39题详解】
下文“To achieve top levels of performance, you need a refined approach. You can’t repeat the same things blindly and expect to become exceptional. What you need is a combination of automatic habits and deliberate practice. After one habit has been mastered, you have to return to the effortful part of the work. (要达到顶级表现,你需要精进的方法。你不能盲目重复相同的事情却期望变得卓越。你需要的是自动化习惯与刻意练习的结合。当一个习惯被掌握后,你必须回到需要付出努力的部分)”提出了超越习惯瓶颈、追求卓越的具体方法——习惯与刻意练习相结合。D选项“Habits are necessary, but not sufficient for mastery. (习惯是必要的,但对于精通而言并不足够)”作为本段首句,精准概括了下文的核心观点:习惯是基础但非全部,从而引出下文对“刻意练习”这一补充要素的阐述。故选D项。
【40题详解】
上文“Old tasks become easier the second time around, but it doesn’t get easier overall because now you’re pouring your energy into the next challenge. Each habit unlocks the next level of performance. (旧任务第二次做会更容易,但整体上并不会变得更容易,因为现在你把精力投入到下一个挑战中。每个习惯都解锁了下一层级的性能)”描述了通过习惯释放认知资源、不断挑战新高度的动态过程。A选项“It’s an endless cycle. (这是一个无尽的循环)”承接上文,用“endless cycle”精准概括了上文所描述的“掌握旧习惯—释放资源—迎接新挑战”这一周而复始的进步模式,作为全文结尾,既总结了本段观点,也呼应了文章开篇对习惯与卓越关系的探讨。故选A项。

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
Jessica was surprised by John’s self-publishing suggestion.

Jessica was surprised by John’s Jessica was surprised by John’s self-publishing suggestion. suggestion. It had never crossed her mind before. As she absorbed his words, a flicker of hope appeared in her eyes. John noticed that and offered a final piece of encouragement before he left. “Just start,” he said warmly. “You’ve done the hardest part.” Inspired, Jessica left the bookstore with a new drive. Over the next few weeks, she spent weeks researching and preparing for self-publishing. She worked tirelessly to finalize the manuscript and create an appealing cover. Finally, she managed to publish her book. To her delight, it began to gain attention from readers who were inspired by the small-town basketball team’s journey.
At her book signing event, Jessica saw John in the line. He was standing at the back of the crowd, with a proud smile on his face. Seeing her old friend, Jessica’s eyes lit up with gratitude. She walked over to John. “I can’t thank you enough,” she said, handing him a signed copy. “The encounter with you made this book possible.” John smiled warmly. “The story was always there, Jessica. You just needed to bring it to the world yourself.” As they chatted, Jessica realized that the journey had not only fulfilled her dream but had also taught her a valuable lesson about perseverance and the power of taking control of her own destiny.
