The Best Restaurants in Chicago
Summer has arrived and where to eat in Chicago? This collection of Chicago’s best restaurants provides answers to the classic question.
Luella’s Southern Kitchen TEL (773) 961-8196
This restaurant serves some of the city’s best Southern food, including shrimp, fried chicken and waffles. This restaurant on the North Side is also a popular brunch destination. It’s a casual spot with counter ordering, but it brings a serious menu where everyone can find something hearty.
Community Tavern TEL (773) 283-6080
Nowadays, the restaurant has expanded its menu away from its origins as a neighborhood steakhouse. But fortunately, the neighborhood aspect remains. The bar program is rich, and kids under 12 eat free on certain days. The menu keeps innovating, which isn’t a bad thing. For example, there’s a section of Asian-style dumplings, including one stuffed with mushroom butter.
Smoque BBQ TEL (773) 545-7427
With two smokers to prepare St. Louis- style roast meat, this destination in the Northwest Side neighborhood of Irving Park delivers barbecue in the styles of Kansas City and Memphis. During the pandemic, Barry Sorkin, the owner, expanded takeout and outdoor dining options, including a patio in the former parking lot.
Pat’s Pizza TEL (773) 248-0168
Chicago thin-crust pizza is having a moment, with the city’s pizza- makers eager to protest the convention that here only serves thick- crust pizza. Pat’s Pizza has a storied history of popularizing thin-crust pizza. This family-owned spot proudly makes some of the crispiest, thinnest pizzas around. Pat’s uses its own sausage, which also helps set its flavor apart. Pizzas are available for takeout, delivery, patio, and indoor dining.

I once was a quick-tempered boy. If I mumbled (嘟哝), I got angry. When I got angry, I’d yell at anyone nearby, not caring who they were or what they were doing. Then they would make fun of me. Eventually, many people around me disliked me because of this. They started avoiding me. Even though I felt like I needed to improve myself, I didn’t know how.
My father was patient with me and one day he gave me a basket full of nails (钉子) and a hammer (铁锤). Every time I got angry, he advised me to avoid scolding (责骂) the people involved and hammer a nail into the wooden fence behind the house until I calmed down. The first day, I hammered about 50 nails into the fence. As the days passed, I learned to control my hurtful speech in front of those who made me angry. Only when I got angry should I go and hammer the nails immediately!
Eventually, before I could take the basket and hammer and go to the fence, my anger cooled and I started hammering nails into the fence less. In a few days, I no longer felt the need to hammer nails into the fence. I went to my father and told him the details. Although he was happy inside, he didn’t show it. He gave me a nail puller and asked me to pull out the nails I had hammered into the fence one by one. It took me a whole day to pull them all out. After pulling out all the nails, my father and I went to see the fence. My father showed me the scars where the nails had been pulled out from the fence and said, “When you get angry, you lose your mind and say things like this nail. Even if you apologize for speaking as if you were pulling out a nail, the wound left by those words is just as hard to heal as the scar from this nail.”
I too understood the concept well, changed, grew up to respect my village, and achieved many successes in life.

Labubu dolls are hard to find. Even at the giant flagship store of their maker, Pop Mart, in Shanghai, customers are told they need to wait a week or longer. The lovely creatures, sold in “blind boxes” so that buyers don’t know which one they will get, are loved not only by Chinese children but also by famous people at home and abroad.
For many years, Chinese shoppers liked to follow foreign trends in fashion, make-up, hotels and other areas. But now, they are turning to local luxury brands (奢侈品品牌), high-end make-up labels and milk tea shops. Furthermore, many of these brands are winning fans in other countries. Chinese brands are beginning to penetrate international markets with their unique products.
As consumers have become more careful about spending, cheap but good-quality local brands have grown popular. But lower prices are not the only reason for the love of Chinese brands. In many cases shoppers are paying the same or even more for local products. For instance, the best-selling drinks at Chagee, a tea chain (连锁) that went public in New York in April, are tea lattes (拿铁) that sell for 15-20 yuan ($2-3), almost the same as Starbucks’s top drinks in China.
Chinese consumers are also now far less crazy about foreign goods simply because they are foreign. The rapid rise of Laopu proves that. Instead of copying Western style, both Laopu and Chagee have shown off their Chineseness. It has worked. The competition is not limited to China. Pop Mart now has stores in more than 20 countries, including at least 37 in America. Chagee will have more than 1,300 shops outside China by the end of the year, up from almost none four years ago.
Experts believe that the more foreign recognition these brands get, the more popular they become within China. The popularity on Western social media over Labubu dolls is thought to have made them even more famous at home.
8. What’s the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To introduce the topic. B. To present an argument.
C. To offer a solution. D. To give an opinion.
9. What does the underlined word “penetrate” in paragraph 2 most likely mean?
A. Avoid. B. Enter. C. Ignore. D. Destroy.
10. What does the example of Chagee’s tea lattes show?
A. Price matters most to consumers.
B. Cheap local brands are popular in China.
C. Some local brands achieve high pricing.
D. Chinese tea chains outperform foreign ones.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Pop Mart: A Symbol of Chinese Toys

【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“Labubu dolls are hard to find. Even at the giant flagship store of their maker, Pop Mart, in Shanghai, customers are told they need to wait a week or longer. The lovely creatures, sold in “blind boxes” so that buyers don’t know which one they will get, are loved not only by Chinese children but also by famous people at home and abroad.(拉布布娃娃很难找到。即使在制造商Pop Mart位于上海的大型旗舰店,顾客也被告知需要等待一周或更长时间。这些可爱的动物被装在“盲盒”里出售,买家不知道他们会得到哪个,它们不仅受到中国孩子的喜爱,也受到国内外名人的喜爱)”并结合下文对中国消费者由对外国产品的喜爱转为青睐本土产品现象的介绍推知,本段的作用是引出文章话题。故选A。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中“Chinese brands are beginning to penetrate international markets with their unique products.(中国品牌正开始以其独特产品penetrate国际市场)”中的“with their unique products(以它们独特的产品)”可知,此处是指中国品牌以其独特的产品打入国际市场。由此猜测,划线词penetrate意为“进入”,与enter同义。故选B。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“ In many cases shoppers are paying the same or even more for local products. For instance, the best-selling drinks at Chagee, a tea chain (连锁) that went public in New York in April, are tea lattes (拿铁) that sell for 15-20 yuan ($2-3), almost the same as Starbucks’s top drinks in China.(在许多情况下,消费者为当地产品支付相同甚至更高的价格。例如,今年4月在纽约上市的茶连锁店Chagee最畅销的饮料是茶拿铁,售价15-20元(2—3美元),几乎与星巴克在中国的顶级饮料相同)”推知,Chagee的茶拿铁的例子表明一些本土品牌实现了高价。故选C。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,并结合第二段“For many years, Chinese shoppers liked to follow foreign trends in fashion, make-up, hotels and other areas. But now, they are turning to local luxury brands (奢侈品品牌), high-end make-up labels and milk tea shops. Furthermore, many of these brands are winning fans in other countries. Chinese brands are beginning to penetrate international markets with their unique products.(多年来,中国消费者喜欢在时尚、化妆品、酒店和其他领域追随外国潮流。
D
Rain has long been celebrated for supporting life, but new research suggests it could also power our homes — with a clever change to clean energy. Unlike traditional water power, which relies on strong water flows, a team led by engineer Siowling Soh from the National University of Singapore has developed a way to get electricity from tiny raindrops.
The key lies in a simple design: narrow tubes and mixing air with water drops. As raindrops slide down these tubes, tiny air bubbles form between them, causing a big separation of electric charges. Negatively charged hydroxide ions (OH-) stick to the tube walls, leaving extra positive hydrogen ions (H+) in the water. This charge separation creates electric pressure, similar to the static electricity (静电) from dragging socks on a carpet. When drops fall into a stainless-steel cup, wires carry the built-up charge into a current.
Early tests show good results. In 20-second tests, four 32-centimeter-long tubes made enough electricity to power 12 LED lights non-stop — about 100,000 times more energy than older drop-based methods. Soh notes this could be made larger, such as putting rain-catching tubes on roofs in rainy areas like Singapore, or near waterfalls.
Experts speak highly of the new idea but point out its limits. David Ma, an engineer at Texas A&M University, calls the air-mixing design “clever” for improving efficiency, yet warns it only works with high-resistance devices (like small LEDs) because of low current. Physicist Himanshu Mishra adds it’s “interesting science” but can’t take the place of fossil fuels, as it can’t power larger electrical machines.
While not a solution to global energy needs, this technology offers a fresh way to use nature’s gifts. As Soh puts it, it’s a step toward “a more sustainable society” — proving even the smallest drops can light up our future.
12. What does the second paragraph mainly talk about?
A. The benefits of the air-mixing design.
B. The way the new power system works.
C The results achieved in the power research.
D. Experts’ opinions on the new design’s function.
13. Why does the author mention “Singapore” and “near waterfalls” in paragraph 3?
A. To highlight regions with abundant rainfall.
B. To compare different installation environments.
C. To stress the importance of location in energy industry.
D. To illustrate potential applications of the technology.
14. What is David Ma’s attitude toward the air-mixing design?
A. Skeptical. B. Objective.
C Disapproving. D. Indifferent.
15. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. An innovative method of electricity generation.
B. The guidance on building a raindrop power device.
C. A comparison of efficiency in various energy sources.
D. The view that raindrop power will replace conventional energy.
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. B 15. A

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Ethan enjoyed riding the school bus home. The ride home gave him some time to relax after a busy day of fifth grade. He usually sat alone and enjoyed that too. With four siblings, he didn’t get much time alone. Sometimes he sat with his younger brother, Lucas, but Lucas was sick at home today.
The bus stopped and the tallest boy in his class, Troy, stepped off followed by his younger brother, Jamie. As the bus pulled away, Ethan looked back over his shoulder to watch the boys. Troy was yelling and waving his hands at his little brother. Jamie said something Ethan could not hear. Troy yelled, gave his younger brother a hard shove and knocked him to the ground. Jamie was on the ground wiping at his eyes, but Troy walked away.
Ethan turned in his seat, feeling disgusted. He hated seeing little kids get picked on. The sight of Jamie on the ground crying was burned into his memory. He tried to think of something else.
He thought of the model car he was working on at home, a 1967 Corvette. He started building it over a week ago and just finished putting it together last night. Tonight, as soon as he finished his homework, he could start painting the car. That was his favorite part. He already had the perfect color of blue picked out.
He hurried off the bus, ran through his yard, and breezed through the kitchen with a quick hello to his mom. She was making spaghetti, which smelled delicious. He ran up the stairs two at a time and rushed into his room.
“Surprise!” his brother Lucas said, throwing his arms into the air. “What are you doing in my room? I thought you were sick!”
“I feel better!”
“What’s on your face? Are you bleeding?”
“No! I’m not bleeding.” Lucas wiped at his face. “It’s probably just paint. Look! Look what I did!” He pointed at the desk in the corner of Ethan’s room.

Ethan took a deep breath and then unfolded his fist.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Ethan looked down at his desk in horror. His Corvette! Lucas had painted it red. An awful dull shade of red! “Why would you do that?” Ethan shouted. “I wanted to surprise you!” Lucas grinned, with his eyes gleaming. Ethan could feel the anger growing, bubbling up inside him, his hands curling into fists. Lucas kept saying something, but so angry was Ethan that he couldn’t even hear a word. “Do you like it? I tried so hard. Look!” asked Lucas. Red paint was smeared across his face, forehead, even hair. Looking at Lucas, Ethan couldn’t help imagining his little brother spending the whole day carefully painting the car.
Ethan took a deep breath and then unfolded his fist. Picturing the scene that Jamie sat on the ground wiping at his eyes as his big brother Troy walked away, Ethan stepped toward the table where the car was still drying. Ethan wasn’t sure what to say. He didn’t want to lie, but he didn’t want to hurt his brother’s feelings either. Lucas was only trying to surprise him. He could see that now. “Do you? Do you like it?” Lucas insisted. “Every time I look at this car, I’m going to think of you,” Ethan responded, a smile stretching across his face. And that was the truth. “Now, we’d better get that paint off your face before dinner.”

4 What did the boy do when he got angry at the beginning?
A. He behaved rudely to people around.
B. He apologized to the people he had hurt.
C. He avoided people who made him angry.
D. He immediately hammered nails into the fence.

A. To help him control his anger.
B. To punish him for his bad behavior.
C. To teach him how to repair the fence.
D. To make him stronger by hammering nails.
6. How did the father react when the boy stopped hammering nails?
A. He apologized to the boy.
B. He showed his inner happiness.
C. He asked the boy to remove the nails.
D. He told the boy to repair the damaged fence.
7. Which best summarizes the main lesson of this story?
A. Actions speak louder than words.
B. Time heals all wounds.

Experts believe that the more foreign recognition these brands get the more popular they become within China.
B. Why Milk Tea Brands Are Popular in China
C. From Foreign Trends to Local Love: Chinese Brands Shine
D. The History of Chinese Luxury Brands

C. The results achieved in the power research.
A. Skeptical. B. Objective.
C. Disapproving. D. Indifferent.
15. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. An innovative method of electricity generation.
B. The guidance on building a raindrop power device.

Learning with Short Videos: Tips for Students
Short videos are not just for fun — they can be great tools for learning. Many students use them to study English, science, or even history. But how can you make sure you learn well from them? Here are some simple tips.
Choose the right videos
Not all short videos are good for learning. Look for ones made by teachers or educational channels. ____16____ For example, if you’re learning grammar, choose a video that explains just one rule at a time.
Watch with a goal
Before you press “play”, ask yourself: “What do I want to learn from this?” Maybe it’s a new English word or a math formula. ____17____ This helps you stay focused, not just watch passively.
Don’t watch too many at once
It’s easy to keep scrolling to the next video, but your brain needs time to take in the information. Watch 1-2 videos, then stop for a while. ____18____ You can also write down key points or explain what you learned to a friend.
Use subtitles (字幕)
Most learning videos have subtitles. Turn them on, especially for English videos. ____19____ You can read along and learn how words are spelled and used in sentences.
Practice what you learn
Watching is just the first step. To really learn, you need to practice. If a video teaches a new dance move, try it yourself. ____20____ This way, you’ll remember better and make the learning stick.
A. This helps you take in the knowledge more deeply.
B. They should be clear and not too fast.
