Step One:Pre-reading
Read about the following text about active learning. Pick out key phrases that can describe what active learners do.
Active learning is an engaging and dynamic way of acquiring knowledge. In this process, students are encouraged to be curious and open-minded, always eager to explore new ideas. They need to pay close attention to the lessons, actively take notes to record important information, and focus on key concepts. Asking questions is crucial, as it helps clarify doubts and deepen understanding. After learning, students should reflect on what they have gained and listen to different points of view, which can broaden their perspectives and enhance their critical thinking skills.

1.Your inner voice expresses your personal opinions, while the outer voice tells you about opinions from what you hear or read.
2.Instead,active learners are open-minded and focus on what the speaker/writer is saying, not on what their brain is saying in the background.
【分析】 这是一个主从复合句,句子主干为active learners are open-minded and focus on...;其后是what引导的两个并列的宾语从句,作介词on的宾语。
3.Even when an idea sounds entirely unlikely, there may be an aspect of it that is based on truth.
【分析】 这是一个主从复合句,句子主干为there may be an aspect。that引导定语从句,修饰an aspect; when引导时间状语从句。
4.They refuse to learn or ignore what is said because of who the speaker/writer is.
They refuse to learn or ignore。
5.This goes the other way as well—do not just assume that some people are always right because of who they are or just because they are your friends.
破折号后句子主干为祈使句do not just assume...,其后that引导宾语从句;句中包含两个并列的原因状语结构because of和because,其中who引导宾语从句作because of的宾语。
Most people assume that the human brain is set on “automatic”—that means it learns all by itself. But this isn't always true.
A great many people often assume that technology is always a positive force in education. But sometimes it can lead to a lack of focus if not used properly.

Kevin Daum is a strong supporter of active learning, which he believes is essential for personal and professional growth. He argues that traditional learning methods, where students passively absorb information, are 1.unlikely to lead to long-term or deep understanding(不太可能导致长期或深刻的理解). Instead, he suggests that active learning, which involves engaging with the material through discussion, problem-solving, and hands-on activities, 2.promotes a deeper level of comprehension(促进更深层次的理解) and critical thinking.
3.At the heart of his approach is the idea (在他的方法的核心之处是一个想法)that learning should be flexible and tailored to individual needs. He emphasizes 4.the importance of reflecting on one's learning process(反思自己学习过程的重要性), as this helps identify strengths and weaknesses. Daum also stresses the need to challenge assumptions and engage in debates, even if it means 5.arguing with commonly accepted ideas(与普遍接受的观点争论). By doing so, learners can develop a well-rounded understanding of the subject matter.
Daum believes that active learning is not just about acquiring knowledge but also about developing an inner drive to continuously seek improvement. He advises against ignoring data and feedback, as these are crucial for 6.working out effective learning strategies(制定有效的学习策略). In short, he 7.attempts to promote a learning culture (努力促进学习文化)that is focused on personal development. By active learning, individuals can 8.end up not only with a wealth of knowledge(最后不仅收获了丰富的知识) but also with the skills to use it effectively in real-world situations.

ACTIVE LEARNING
by Kevin Daum
Most people assume①that the human brain is set on②“automatic③”—that means it learns all by itself④.[1] But this isn't always true.We need to train ourselves to be better learners—to actively take part in the learning process and to reflect on what we have learnt[2].These kinds of learning behaviours are called “active learning”.I suggest⑤ doing five things to take an active role in your learning.
[1]本句为复合句,assume后为that引导的宾语从句;“that means ...itself”中的that为指示代词。
[2]此处动词不定式短语to train ourselves作need的宾语,而“to be better learners ...learnt”作目的状语,其中“to actively ...learning process”和“to reflect ...learnt”并列,解释to be better learners的具体内容。
Listen to the outer voice
There are two kinds of voices:the inner⑥ voice and the outer⑦ voice.Your inner voice expresses your personal opinions, while the outer voice tells you about opinions from what you hear or read[3].Although your inner voice can be useful,it can also get in the way of⑧ learning. If you keep paying too much attention to it,you risk missing⑨ important information.Instead, active learners are open-minded and focus on what the speaker/writer is saying, not on what their brain is saying in the background. In this way, they are in a better position to make decisions.
Argue with your inner voice
If you find your inner voice difficult to control[4], you can argue with it as most active learners do[5].When your inner voice tells you a speaker/writer is wrong, think about why the speaker/writer may be right.Be flexible⑩ in your opinions and you might end up⑪ agreeing with the speaker/writer after all.If not[6],at least⑫ you have “listened to” another point of view.
[6]If not为省略结构,完整形式为“If you don't agree with the speaker/writer”。
Ask questions
Asking questions is the easiest way to promote⑬ active learning. When you get information from someone, from books or the Internet, ask two, three, even five questions about the topic. The answers will lead you to further learning, and the very⑭ act of working out⑮ questions will help you to achieve⑯ a higher level of understanding about the topic. In short⑰:Do not stop being curious.
Get to the truth
Active learners do not accept everything they learn. They attempt to⑱find the truth at the heart of⑲ each idea.Even when an idea sounds entirely unlikely⑳, there may be an aspect㉑of it that is based on㉒ truth. So if someone says that dinosaurs still exist㉓ today, think about why they believe this.Where does the idea come from? Do they have enough data㉔ to support their views? If you try to find out the source of an idea,no matter how crazy it seems[7], you will increase your chance of learning something.
[7]此处为“no matter how+形容词”引导的让步状语从句,相当于however crazy it seems。
Focus on the message
Many people miss out on㉕ learning opportunities because they let their feelings get in the way. They refuse to learn or ignore㉖ what is said because of who the speaker/writer is.It is true that we cannot help disliking㉗ some people—this is human nature[8], after all㉘.But do not forget you can still learn from them.Active learners do not judge people based on first impressions㉙ or personal feelings.Instead, they separate the message from the messenger. This goes the other way as well—do not just assume that some people are always right because of who they are or just because they are your friends.
