The Dead Sea,a salt lake close to Israel,Jordan and the West Bank,is shrinking at an alarming rate—about 3.3 feet per year, according to the environmentalist group EcoPeace Middle East. And human actions are largely to blame. “It’s not just like one country is punishing the Dead Sea; it’s more like the whole region,” said photographer Moritz Küstner, who visited the area in February to work on his series “The Dying Dead Sea”. The Dead Sea needs water from the other natural sources surrounding it,such as the Jordan River basin. But around the 1960s,some of the water sources it relied upon were diverted. Mineral extraction industries are another main reason why the water levels are declining, experts say. The Dead Sea’s minerals have been popular for their medical power and can often be found in cosmetics (化妆品) and other consumer products. And then,of course, there’s the Middle East’s hot,dry climate, which makes it difficult for the lake to refill itself. Israel and Jordan have signed a $900 million deal in an effort to stabilize the Dead Sea’s water levels. It involves building a canal from the Red Sea to the Dead Sea so that both countries would be able to not only supply water to Israel and Jordan but also to pump much needed water—some 300 million cubic meters annually—into the Dead Sea. “This is the most important and significant agreement since the peace treaty with Jordan (in 1994),” said Silvan Shalom,Israel’s energy and water resources minister at the time. Whether the canal—estimated to take three years to complete—will work out positively and as planned remains to be seen. 1.Moritz Küstner visited the Dead Sea to ________. A.shoot TV series about people’s action there B.make a survey about the sea level C.do his photographic series work D.research into environmental problems C 根据文章第三段“... who visited the area in February to work on his series ’The Dying Dead Sea’.” C。] 2.Which of the following statements is NOT the reason for the water levels’ declining? A.The other natural sources the Dead Sea relied on were switched. B.The Dead Sea’s minerals have been dug and used in some products. C.The Middle East’s climate makes the lake itself difficult to store water. D.Israel and Jordan are the two countries to destroy the Dead Sea. 根据文章第七段“Israel and Jordan have signed a $900 million deal in an effort to stabilize the Dead Sea’s water levels.”可知,D项“Israel and Jordan are the two countries to destroy the Dead Sea. (以色列和约旦是毁灭死海的两个国家)”不是水位下降的原因。故选D。] 3.What measure has been taken to save the Dead Sea? A.Bringing in water from the Red Sea. B.Introducing water from Israel and Jordan. C.Taking Israel’s energy and water resources. D.Struggling for international support. 根据文章倒数第三段“It involves building a canal from the Red Sea to the Dead Sea... ”可知,为了解决死海的问题,他们从红海引入了水源。故选A。] 4.What does the passage mainly tell us? At the opening ceremony of the Paris climate summit,Chinese government restated China’s plan made in June to cut its carbon emissions per unit of GDP by 60—65 per cent from 2005 levels by 2030,and increase nonfossil fuel sources in primary energy consumption to about 20 per cent. With a large population,China is facing increasing resource limits, severe environmental pollution and a worsening ecosystem, and its citizens are also becoming increasingly aware of environmental problems. Suffering environmental problems and considering the efforts important in order to transform its economic growth pattern, the country will have much at risk if climate change is left unattended. Actually, climate change efforts have already been included in China’s mediumand longterm program of economic and social development, and ecological efforts are the clear characteristics in China’s 13th FiveYear Plan (2016—2020). Although it is and will be a developing country for a long time,China has been actively involved in the global campaign against climate change, now topping the world in terms of energy conservation and the use of new and renewable energy. However,China’s development rights need to be respected. It is unfair to overstress China’s status as one of the world’s largest greenhouse gas emitters and regard it as the major part of responsibilities in the global fight against climate change. It is worthy of notice that China’s emissions of greenhouse gases per person are far lower than those of developed countries, especially the United States, although rapid economic expansion and its population base have made it one of the biggest producers of the greenhouse gas. To show its great resolve,China also announced the establishment of an independent SouthSouth cooperation in September, investing RMB 20 billion to help developing countries affected by global warming. While China is eagerly accomplishing its policy commitment, developed countries should stop questioning China’s commitment to fighting climate change and pointing fingers, and start shouldering their due responsibilities instead. 5.China is selfmotivated to fight against climate change in order to ______. A.top the world B.transform its economic growth pattern C.solve its population problem D.respond to pressure from developed countries B 根据第三段末句“... in order to transform its economic growth pattern, the country will have much ... ”可知,中国决定应对气候变化是为了改变自己的经济增长模式。故选B。] 6.The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 7 refers to ______. A.China B.the United States C.economic expansion D.the population base A [词义猜测题。根据上文中的“China’s emissions of greenhouse gases”以及“rapid economic expansion and its population base”可知,it指代的是中国。故选A。] 7.It can be inferred from the text that ______. A.China will completely use nonfossil fuels by 2030 B.China will carry out its plan by stopping its development C.Chinese emit more greenhouse gases than Americans on average D.some developed countries are not taking on their responsibilities D D。] 8.Which of the following is a sign of China’s selfmotivated fight against climate change? A.Expanding its economy. B.Using nonrenewable energy. C.Making the fight against climate change part of China’s 13th FiveYear Plan. D.Donating money to developing countries. 根据第四段中的“ecological efforts are the clear characteristics in China’s 13th FiveYear Plan”可知,应对气候变化成了“十三五”规划的一部分。故选C。] C The ocean waves (波浪) are getting stronger as a result of climate change, which might cause dangers for coast cities in the future, according to the latest study published in the scientific journal Nature. Researchers found that waves have increased in strength by 0.41 percent per year since 1948.This change is related to the increasing seasurface temperature, which is driving sea level to rise and bringing more serious and extreme weather. This relationship is important,as it shows that “global wave power can be a valuable reminder of global warming, carbon dioxide concentration, the global sea level rise or the global surface atmosphere temperature,” said director of research at the Environmental Hydraulics Institute at Spain’s University of Cantabria. The study reveals a longterm and increasing wave energy. The effects of this increase are particularly clear during the storm seasons. A storm was formed in the winter of 2013—2014 in the North Atlantic, which affected the west coast of Europe.“The storm in 2017 in the Caribbean reminded people of the huge economic effects coming from coastal storms,” said the study. Researchers hope the findings could provide a more complete understanding of the dangers faced by coastal cities in the coming decades.“Our results show that ignoring the changes in wave power and having sea level rise may cause us to think little of climate change, which will result in not enough or poor preparation,” warned the author Fernando J.Mendez,a professor at the University of Cantabria. The findings may warn governments to better protect the population in the coastal cities and infrastructure (基础设施) such as ports and harbors by building coastal defenses. 9.What’s a result of stronger ocean waves? A.Climate begins to change. B.People living near the coast face danger. C.Oceans are being polluted. D.Cities will move to other places. 10.Which of the following may lead to stronger ocean waves? A.The rising seasurface temperature. B.Coastal cities. C.More population. D.More ports and harbors. A。] 11.Which of the following best explains “reveals” underlined in Paragraph 3? A.Affects. B.Invents. C.Selects. D.Shows. D。] 12.What is the probable purpose of the study? A.To predict the climate change. B.To advertise the results. C.To warn governments and coastal people of the increasing ocean waves. D.To encourage people in the coastal cities. You may not be very familiar with “ecotourism”. 1 But in an age of growing environmental awareness,it is not too difficult for us to imagine and understand this new form of holiday. Ecotourism which is considered as a kind of responsible tourism,is typically defined as travel to places where special and unusual plants, animals and cultural heritages (遗产)are the main attractions. 2 Therefore, programs concerning the protection of some natural and cultural spots also form a part of ecotourism. Ecotourism is developing at a great speed, according to a recent report by the World Tourism Organization. Ecotourism in recent years has enjoyed an annual growth of about 5% worldwide. 3 They include bird watching, hiking, diving, photography and taking part in various kinds of local cultural events. 4 However,it looks like some smaller towns and country areas may well become the new destinations for people to visit tomorrow because they are rich in ecological, cultural and historical resources. Ecotourism has been gaining increasing recognition and popularity mainly for the relaxing, natural and vivid experience it offers to tourists. People are attracted to nature and long to be close to it. However, conflict between nature and human beings is unavoidable. 5 A.The definition of ecotourism is beyond words. B.It takes ecology and culture into consideration. C.It is a new term in today’s tourism industry. D.More than 80 activities have been listed for ecotourism. E.People can have great fun enjoying nature through ecotourism. F.Big cities are still the major places that attract tourists in our society today. G.How to protect natural resources while taking advantage is of great importance. 1.C [根据空格前一句“You may not be very familiar with ’ecotourism’.” 因此我们可以通过C项中的名词短语new term跟空前的“not be very familiar”的一致性来确定这两个句子之间有一定的关联性,因此C项“It is a new term in today’s tourism industry.” 2.B [根据上文“Ecotourism which is considered as... ”以及下文“Therefore, programs concerning the protection of... ”可知,本段解释了生态旅游的含义,提到了文化遗产和稀有动植物,由此得知生态旅游考虑到了生态和文化,因此B项“It takes ecology and culture into consideration.”符合语境。故选B。] 3.D [根据空格后一句“They include bird watching... ”可知,生态旅游包括多种活动,因此D项“More than 80 activities have been listed for ecotourism.” 空后句中的They指代D项中的“More than 80 activities”,故选D。] 4.F [根据空格后一句中的However可知,前后存在对比,F项中的Big cities与后一句中的“some smaller towns and country areas”形成对比,因此F项“Big cities are still the major places that attract tourists in our society today.” 5.G [根据空格前一句“However, conflict between nature and human beings is unavoidable.” 因此G项“How to protect natural resources while taking advantage is of great importance.” Charlie Chaplin was really a master of nonverbal humor, who made people happy.
