The secret to a longer life? Being conscientious(认真的)
Executives who build successful companies, Olympic athletes, and even some US presidents are all likely to live longer than the average person — because they are more conscientious. The life-extending benefits of a conscientious life ____1____ (bring) to light by a comparison of 20 previous studies. The studies, rated 8,900 people for conscientiousness using a standard psychological survey, and also recorded ____2____ they died.
Howard Friedman and Margaret Kern at the University of California at Riverside found that people who were less conscientious were 50 percent more likely to die at any given age, on average, than ____3____ of the same age who scored highly. This has a greater impact than socioeconomic status and intelligence, which are also known ____4____ (increase) longevity. The analysis by Friedman and Kern highlighted a significant correlation between conscientiousness and life span, ____5____ (suggest) that personality traits play a critical role in determining longevity.
Friedman and Kern then divided the most conscientious study subjects into subgroups and found that high achievers were most likely to live the longest, says Kern. “These are individuals who are hard-working, resourceful, confident, and ambitious; the longest second line were orderly people, ____6____ structured and disciplined lifestyles contributed to their longevity. Finally, traits of responsibility and reliability were also significant. “These are people often ____7____ (see) as respectable members of the community. They contribute time and energy to society, cooperate with colleagues and neighbors, and are trustworthy people,” says Kern.
Friedman suggests that conscientious people do not live longer simply ____8____ they are boring or cautious, but admits they tend to “live lives that are more stable and less stressful”. This stability might come ____9____ their ability to plan, organize, and maintain healthy routines, which are essential for long-term well-being.
“One of the studies we included ____10____ (look) at American presidents,” says Kern. The first US president, George Washington, lived to be 67, double the life expectancy there at the time. “Washington was very conscientious, yet he certainly didn’t live a boring life.”

The Bow Street Police Museum, housed in one of London’s oldest police stations, provides an interesting look into the history of UK law enforcement. Located in the former Bow Street police station and magistrates (地方执法官) court in central London, this museum provides visitors with a unique opportunity to step back in time and explore the roots of professional policing in the UK.
The building itself dates back to 1881 and served as a police station and court for over a century. Those arrested in the Bow Street area were held in the station’s cells overnight before being taken to court the next morning. Visitors today can still see these cells, including one large cell known as “the tank”, which was used to hold multiple people. The museum’s exhibits recount stories of arrests, investigations, and the pursuit of justice, providing a vivid picture of life within the police force during those times.
One of the most significant stories the museum tells is that of the Bow Street Runners, often regarded as one of the first professional police forces in England. Founded in 1749 by magistrates Henry and John Fielding, the Bow Street Runners were instrumental in reducing crime in the area. The members were equipped with handcuffs, a pistol, and a stick to help them maintain law and order, and their efforts laid the groundwork for modern policing.
The Bow Street police station was eventually closed in 1992, but its tradition endures through the museum. Among those who worked there was Lee-Jane Yates, a former officer in the Metropolitan Police, who remembers “the tank” as a particularly unpleasant place. The court, which closed its doors in 2006, also holds historical significance, having seen several important trials.
Today, the Bow Street Police Museum invites visitors to explore this rich history through a carefully selected collection of artifacts and stories. Curator Jen Kavanagh and museum manager Vicki Pipe have selected some of their favorite items and features from the museum for visitors to discover, making the museum a must-see for anyone interested in this part of history.

(C)
English, like many languages, allows adjectives to be used as nouns, such as “the good”, “the bad”, and “the ugly”. However, referring to groups like “the poor” or “the disabled” is increasingly seen as essentializing and stigmatizing, especially for characteristics considered unfortunate. This has led to discomfort with terms like “blacks” when used as a bare group noun. Fortunately, it’s easy to add another word to avoid this, such as people“,or better yet, something descriptive like”black veterans“or ”black voters“, which adds depth to the phrase. These make these phrases a bit more three-dimensional, like the people they point to.
These are far from the only ideas flowing into journalists’ inboxes today. There is no shortage of suggestions: replace “slaves” with “enslaved people” or “racialised people”; “addicts” with “drug users” or “people with a substance-abuse problem”; and so on.
In each instance, the target is a term that is, or can be seen as, bearing negative meaning. The alternative is meant to be less so. However, this approach presents challenges.
One is that though a case can be made for each individual change, adopting every one will quickly make a piece of writing awkward, since every new option is longer than the one it is supposed to replace. It will also make writing seem more unnatural, since the entire point is to replace words in common use with phrases that are not. Good journalism is ideally conversational and accessible, calling for a lively and engaging style.
Changing the world is hard: changing the language is a lot easier, which is why linguistic (语言的) engineering can tempt people who may feel they have no other tools at hand apart from their keyboards. But it does not seem to work out as hoped. Replacing a stigmatised word often merely results in the stigma attaching to the new word. “Special needs” was once considered a polite phrase, but now “special” is a mean-spirited taunt too.
Some groups have chosen a different approach by reclaiming older terms. “African-American” was popular for 30 years, but now “Black” is back, often with a capital B. While “hearing-impaired” is still used medically, many “Deaf” people proudly use the term with a capital D. Similarly, some activists have accepted being called “fat”. The idea seems to be that showing pride is likely to be more effective than changing words.
As for writers, good works should humanise whatever it is about, which is why stories often begin with a named person before going into causation and abstraction. Well-crafted writing that is both sharp and humane can engage readers and benefit its subjects. In this context, everyday conversational language may be just as effective as the latest terms promoted by activists.
43. What does the word ”stigmatizing“(paragraph 1) mean?
A. Respecting the characteristics of individuals.
B. Coining new words to describe a new group.
C. Using language that is neutral and descriptive.
D. Encouraging negative associations with a group.
44. What does the writer think of the word replacement?
A. It can make the writing more lively and engaging.
B. The new phrases might still be misunderstood by readers.
C. The new words may still bear some unfavourable meaning.
D. Readers might find the new terms too formal and confusing.
45. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Some old language has long been misused.
B. Language evolution is gradually slowing down.
C. The way we use language can shape perceptions.
D. Effective writing should show the change of language.
46. Which of the following statements is the writer most likely to agree with?
A. Linguistic engineering may not always help.
B. Older terms have completely lost their appeal.
C. Writers need to contribute to the coinage of new terms.
D. Everyday conversational language is not effective as assumed.

Excerpt from a Commencement Speech
I was humbled and honored to be asked by the president of this outstanding university to speak to you today. Who am I? I am Gavin Presgrave, and for the past 39 years, I have written graduation speeches for hundreds of celebrities and nervous valedictorians (致辞的最优生). ___47___ And, at the risk of bragging, I was the first graduation - speech writer to compare life to a book.
If I’m known for anything, it’s for starting speeches by saying, “I promise to keep things short, as I’m sure you are all impatient to go forward to the wonderful lives I hope you will live.” I’m proud of that. But perhaps my most famous work came during a commencement speech at Penn State in the spring of 1977. During that speech, given by someone whose name I forget, I first used the phrase “As I look out into this sea of eager faces...” And that “sea of faces” thing was a real game - changer in the world of graduation - speech writing.
___48___In 1997, I won a Herman (our version of the Oscar) for Best Use of a Children’s Author Quote. That same year, I was nominated for Best Opening Joke, which went like, “Oh, no! We’re all wearing the same gown! How embarrassing!” It was a crowd-pleaser.
......
So what have I learned during my career? ___49___ I’m not sure, but I’m nevertheless reminded of the day my mother died. Moments before her passing, she told me life was a book and even the saddest of chapters shall come to an end. If you can read the sad chapters swiftly and the happy chapters slowly, then yours will be a life worth living.
Most of you have no idea what life lies ahead or what course your lives will take — two other ways of saying future. I know this. ___50___ We may not need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows, but it can’t hurt to carry an umbrella. As I once said, “Tomorrow is a gift wrapped in time. Now is the time to open it!”
A. The journey you’re about to start will be filled with twists and turns.
B. Yes, I’m proud to say that I’ve won several awards for my graduation speeches.
C. What important lesson can I pass along?
D. But my life path has not always been smooth.
E. For decades, I have come up with new ways to say future.
F. What should a good graduation speech be like?

IV. Summary Writing(10分)
51. Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
The Future of Virtual Reality
Over the next decade, Virtual Reality (VR) could dramatically change our lives as it becomes more advanced and widely used. Experts think that by 2030, VR might be a big part of our everyday routines. Right now, over 40 million people own VR headsets, and this number is expected to double in the next three years.
VR is set to make a big impact in various fields. In gaming, VR will offer a new level of engagement, letting players fully explore and interact with virtual worlds. Games will become more interactive, allowing players to look around and control their experiences in ways not possible with traditional games. Designers are already exploring new game styles that focus on enjoying the VR environment rather than just quick reactions or scoring points.
Education will also see exciting changes. Within the next five to ten years, teachers might use VR to take students on virtual field trips or provide engaging learning experiences. History students could witness important battles up close, medical students might explore the human body as if they were tiny cells, and music students could attend virtual concerts in iconic venues like the Sydney Opera House.
VR could also transform travel. By 2021, virtual scenes of cities, beaches, and other stunning places could become available, allowing people to “visit” destinations that are otherwise hard to reach due to distance or cost. This could make travel more accessible for everyone and potentially reduce the environmental impact of tourism, such as reducing carbon emissions from flights and transportation.
However, VR might not become as popular as expected. If the technology doesn’t advance enough, it could end up like older tech such as CDs or PDAs. Problems like delay or motion sickness from underpowered hardware might make it less appealing. Despite its potential, VR’s future success will depend on overcoming these challenges.

“One of the studies we included ____10____ (look) at American presidents” says Kern.
