Macy had just stepped off her school bus on Monday afternoon when she was confronted with a horrifying scene: her family’s residence was swallowed by flames. Without the slightest delay, she dashed toward the house and sprang into immediate action.
“You can witness the moment she realized her house was on fire,” her mother Lisa Johnson recalled. “She raced to the front door and yelled desperately into the building, ‘Flee at once! The house is burning!’” Inside, her two elder brothers remained totally unconscious of the potential danger.
One of them, a 14-year-old boy, had returned home feeling under the weather and was asleep in a bedroom directly above the garage, where the fire had already begun to spread fiercely. The other was taking a shower, preparing for his work. Neither noticed nor sensed anything abnormal until Macy’s desperate shouts alerted them. Thanks to Macy’s swift reaction, both brothers managed to make a narrow escape.
Firefighters from Richmond Hill and Bryan County responded quickly and succeeded in containing the blaze before it ruined the entire two-storey house. Even so, the damage left behind is overwhelming.
The family had settled into the house merely several months before, and the majority of their possessions have been reduced to ashes. Despite the huge loss, the Johnson family cherishes what is most precious to them. Terrible as it is to lose almost all their belongings, they still have each other.
While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, one truth is already evident: By virtue of Macy’s bravery, the outcome took a totally different turn. Within seconds, her natural instinct and remarkable courage transformed what could have been a possible tragedy into an inspiring tale of affection, family bond and noble heroism.
24. What did Macy do immediately after seeing the fire?
A. She rushed to the door and yelled. B. She turned to neighbors for help.
C. She called her mom and escaped. D. She attempted to put the fire out.
25. What does the underlined phrase “under the weather” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Scared. B. Energetic. C. Tense. D. Unwell.
26. What can we learn about the Johnson family?
A. They plan to rebuild the house. B. They value their belongings most.
C. They hold strong family bonds. D. They regret their new settlement.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. A Girl’s Life-saving Bravery B. A Sudden Terrible House Fire
C. Lucky Survival from Fire D. Seconds That Showed Family Love

When we are treated without respect, our initial reaction tends to be anger and an urge to strike back instantly to dominate the argument. Yet such a response only leaves us at a disadvantage. The more fiercely we react, the deeper we slip into a psychological trap known as the Hercules Effect (赫拉克勒斯效应). It refers to the fact that some people deliberately release disrespect as a trap, attempting to drag us into negative emotions. Once we fall for it, we will sacrifice our mental peace and energy.
Many people mistakenly assume that respect has to be obtained by proving personal value. Actually, gaining respect is more accessible than expected. Psychologists label the essential strategy as “non-defensive calm boundary holding” — remaining calm without too much explanation or unnecessary apology. Respect is a learnable skill rather than a talent for charming personalities. Keeping calm removes excuses others have for quarrels and prevents offensive reactions.
A study conducted by the University of California, Berkeley reveals that “calm boundary setting” lowers individuals’ stress hormones (荷尔蒙). A calm state can stabilize others’ nervous systems and inspire them to follow suit. In addition, open gestures, controlled breathing and relaxed facial expressions contribute to our self-control and confidence.
Three principles apply to establishing calm boundaries. First, express yourself briefly and politely to convey determination. Second, adopt a neutral tone without emotional instability. Third, declare your limits firmly without consultation. For instance, “I’m unavailable tonight” is much more effective than hesitation and compromise.
Practicing calm boundaries may bring pressure, especially for those accustomed to pleasing others. Some may even regard refusal as an offense. Nevertheless, we can begin with minor daily occasions. By sticking to calm boundaries, we will gradually win sincere respect and escape the Hercules Effect.
28. What does the Hercules Effect refer to?
A. A strategy for obtaining respect. B. A way used to overpower others in quarrels.
C. A phenomenon of losing self-control. D. A trap set by others’ intentional disrespect.
29. What does the Berkeley study suggest about “calm boundary setting”?
A. It boosts individuals’ stress hormones. B. It reduces tension hormones and calms others.
C. It calls for open gestures and controlled breathing. D. It mainly relies on relaxed facial expressions.
30. Which is one rule of setting calm boundaries?
A. Talk with strong angry feelings. B. Ask others for permission of your limits.
C. State your needs shortly and politely. D. Make lots of compromises every time.
31. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To discuss stress hormones. B. To advise staying calm for respect.
C. To explain how to avoid quarrels. D. To describe a study on stress.

There’s a growing view that generative AI weakens young people’s thinking, leading to calls for bans and restrictions. Yet research shows its impact varies greatly depending on how young people use it and their social and emotional support systems.
A large-scale study of 13 to 24-year-olds in America was conducted in November 2025. The study involving over 100 detailed questions about AI use, its impacts on daily life, and mental health, revealed four distinct user groups. One in ten young people are optimistic “power users” who treat generative AI as a valuable tool for learning and personal growth. A group of similar size turns to AI as a substitute (替代品) for the social and emotional support they lack in offline life. These high-frequency AI users often suffer from higher levels of emotional pain, as many of them face bullying, discrimination or serious financial pressure in daily life. Though AI companions may be better than having no support at all, general-purpose AI systems are not designed to take on this role safely and cannot reliably recognize when a young person needs to be directed to professional mental health help.
Roughly a tenth of young people keep a safe distance from AI entirely, as they feel anxious about its potential negative impacts. This group explains AI often increases their anxiety due to concerns about being watched and privacy leaks. Over half of young people, however, use AI in a practical way, treating it as a practical tool rather than a reliance, thanks to their strong social support and sense of belonging.
Policymakers should not focus merely on limiting young people’s exposure to AI. Instead, a comprehensive approach is needed, including setting up smart and strong safeguards for AI systems, building effective paths from AI tools to human care services, and helping parents have more informed and in-depth conversations with teens about AI’s advantages and potential risks.
Ultimately, AI itself does not determine young people’s well-being, but it does reflect and sometimes highlight the strengths or gaps in the human support systems around them.
32. What do “power users” think of generative AI?
A. An emotional aid. B. A substitute for friends.
C. A cause of anxiety. D. A beneficial learning tool.
33. What can be known about general-purpose AI systems?
A. They safely offer emotional support. B. They fail to detect mental crises.
C. They are designed for learning. D. They reduce privacy concerns.
34. What can be inferred about policymakers’ current approach?
A. It has built safe AI systems. B. It ignores AI’s negative impacts.
C. It encourages parent-teen talks. D. It only restricts youngsters’ AI use.
35. What does the text say about AI itself?
A. It directly shapes teenagers’ mental well-being. B. It can fully replace professional mental services.
C. It mirrors human support systems around teens. D. It removes teenagers’ sense of belonging.

Ways to Build a Healthy Body Image
What do you like about the way you look? Most people hesitate when asked this question. It shows a sad reality: few people are content with their appearance. Social culture pushes unachievable beauty ideals, causing widespread body dissatisfaction. Here are four tips to develop a positive body image.
Cut harmful influences.
If looking at fashion media makes you feel self-critical of your body, pause. 36 . When people who are highly critical of their bodies make you feel worse, it’s healthy to reduce contact with them.
37
Many people tend to compare their looks with models, media images, friends or family members. This habit is the greatest barrier to a healthy body image. It always leaves you feeling worse about yourself.
Practice appreciating all your strengths.
38 Instead, you can choose to look deeper. Try to discover shining points of yourself beyond your looks. Base your confidence on your inner qualities rather than your outer looks.
Center on health —not weight.
The journey of life is a long one. The goal really is to be as healthy as possible, but we’re very focused on weight in this cultural context. If you want to use a scale to track your weight, don’t do it more than once a week. 39
Despite all the negative ideas about looks in society, accepting your body helps you form a positive relationship with yourself. 40 Challenge yourself to focus on what you do like about your appearance instead of always thinking about what you dislike.
A. Avoid appearance comparison.
B. Follow others’ appearance standards.
C. In this way, you can change others’ negative ideas.
D. Intentionally limit your time exposed to such content.
E. You may often focus too much on your unsatisfactory looks.
F. Stop weighing yourself temporarily if the number upsets you.
G. This kind of self-acceptance is essential for building a healthy body image.

In the ancient city of Aswan, Egypt, where the golden sands meet the calm blue waters of the Nile, lived an 11-year-old Nubian boy named Mahmoud Said. His small, sun-browned hands were skilled at crafting beautiful necklaces and accessories (衣服配饰) from local clay and leaves. During his school holidays, he would set up a small wooden table at the entrance of the magnificent Temple of Philae, hoping to sell these things to the tourists who wandered by.
His journey to work was a daily adventure. He would rise early, help his mother prepare breakfast for his younger brothers and sisters, and then row across the wide Nile from his home on Heissa Island in a small wooden boat. The gentle breeze and the sight of ancient ruins made the trip bearable, but it also reminded him of his responsibility to contribute to his family’s low income.
Little did he know, a simple mistake was about to test his character in the most profound way. One sunny afternoon, Maria, a tourist from Argentina, was attracted by Mahmoud’s beautiful crafts. She picked out a small necklace priced at 5 dollars but carelessly pulled out a 20-dollar note instead of small change.
At that time, Mahmoud was busy wrapping a gift for another visitor without stopping to look closely at the money. Feeling happy that someone liked his handmade things, he thanked Maria warmly and quickly put the money in his pocket. For him, the 5 dollars would help his family pay for food and medicine.
After Maria left, Mahmoud finished wrapping the gift. He reached into his pocket and found it was a 20-dollar note.
注意: 1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Holding the note tightly, Mahmoud was trapped in his inner struggle.
