are boarding 2a train at Prague's Wilson Station.Their
heartbroken parents do not join them.Indeed, they fear3
they may never see their children again. But they know
that their children will live. These are among the 669
children, most of them Jewish, that Nicholas Winton will
go on tod save from death at the hands of5 the Nazis [1].
[1]most of them Jewish为独立主格结构,most of them
与Jewish之间省略了be动词are。定语从句that Nich-
olas the Nazis修饰先行词the669 children,that在从句
中作save的宾语。
[时态释疑]本段使用一般现在时和一般将来时来描述往
事,以增加描述的生动性和真实性。
2.Nicholas Winton was born on619 May 1909 in Lon-
don,to German-Jewish parents.The family later took
British nationality D.On leaving school [2],Winton
worked in banks in Germany and France. He returned to
Britain in 1931,where he worked in business.
[2]此处介词On表示“就在…之后,一…就”。
3.In December 1938,a friend asked Winton to come to
Prague to aid people who were escaping from Othe Na
zis.In Prague,Winton saw people living in terrible con-
ditions(0 and whose lives were in danger [3].He de-
cided to help transport children to safety in Britain. He
established 2 an office to keep records of 3 the children,
and then returned to Britain to find temporary homes
for them.He used donated funds and his own money to
pay the 50 pounds per child that the British government
required[4].By August 1939,Winton had saved 669 chil-
dren.
[3]现在分词短语living in terrible conditions在此作后
置定语,和whose引导的定语从句一起修饰people。
[4]过去分词donated作前置定语,修饰funds;定语从句
that the British government required修饰先行词the50

and his sister, she made her way to New York,find-
ing work in Brooklyn as a nurse. As immigrants,
they often suffered starvation.Later he found a job
as a bus driver."When I see these guys on the
street,it's like seeing me 20 years ago when I came
to this country,"Munoz recalls.
Munoz began his meal program-An Angel in
Queens-in the summer of 2004.Within a few
months,Munoz and his mother were preparing 20
home-cooked meals daily.Numbers gradually
increased over the years to 35 per night, then 60.In
recent months, that number has jumped to as many
as 140 meals a night.Munoz gets up around 5:00 a.
m.to drive his bus route, and he calls home during
his breaks to see how the cooking is going. When he
gets home around 5:30 p.m.,he helps pack up
meals before heading out to "his corner"in Jackson
Heights."He comes here without fail,"says one of
the men."It could be cold;it could be really hot,
but he's here."Watch Munoz in action in Queens,
New York.
"If I don't go,I'm going to feel bad,"he says."I
know they're going to be waiting for me.
Munoz estimates that food and gas cost approxi-
mately 400 to $450 a week;he and his family are
funding the operation through their savings and his
weekly 700 paycheck.
Asked why he spends so much time helping
people he doesn't know,he answers,"I have a stable
job,my mom,my family,a house...I have every-
thing I want.And these guys don't.So I just think,
'OK,I have the food.'At least today they're going
to have a meal to eat.”
Munoz was named one of the CNN heroes.
