[参考范文]
On Monday morning, hiding behind the window,
we soon saw what we were waiting for.It turned out
that there were three of them from our school. They
sneaked up on our snowman and sneered.Taking their
places on either side, they pulled back their legs to deliv-
er powerful kicks. But the moment they hit the hard ice
block of the base, sneers turned into shock, then agony
and tears. They howled and cursed, gritting their teeth
and stomping their feet.
英语(WY)·
Paragraph 2
Seeing their pained look,we couldn't help laugh-
ing. They were too funny as they hopped away holding
their injured feet.We just couldn't contain our happiness
and excitement. With a hearty laugh,we came out of
hiding and sprang into the yard from inside the house.
“An eye for an eye!Justice done!"We yelled behind
them. And that was the end of our problems with the
snow bullies.Ever since then, our snowman was kept
guarded and intact until it happily melted into spring
water and finally wove into our sweetest childhood
memories.

Imagining a clean,green future
Fifteen years ago,the tiny Indian state of
Sikkim carried out an experiment to end pesti-
cides on every farm in the state,a move which
didn't happen before in India-and probably the
world.
The change was especially important for In-
dia, where progress in agriculture was shown by
the introduction of fertilizers and pesticides. But
with the use of pesticides, cancer rates were ris-
ing in industrial farming areas.Rivers were pol-
luted and soil became infertile(贫瘠的).
Sikkim's leaders said they were driven to go all-
organic by those concerns and the fact that pesti-
cide residues(残留物)一including some chemi-
cals not allowed in other countries-were pollu-
ting fish,vegetables and rice.
In the years since the change to organic
farming,Sikkim has stopped using pesticides and
chemical fertilizers,helped farmers in making
about 190,000 acres of organic farmland and re-
duced the import of many non-organic vegetables
from other states. The change has not always
been easy:farmers have complained that their
crop production has decreased and that they haven't
got enough support from the government.
·7
Need for organic food is high in India and
growing fast.Concern about pesticides and desire
for chemical-free food are encouraging a market
that is growing by 25 percent a year, more than
the 16 percent globally,according to a recent
study by the Associated Chambers of Commerce
and Industry of India. The country's market for
packaged organic products is nearly $8 million
now and is expected to top $12 million, the
study said."This is a big moment for India,"said
Radha Mohan Singh, who was the Union Minis-
ter of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.
So far the government has accepted Sikkim
and organic farming throughout India,putting
about $119 million into supporting farmers all
over the country."The approach Sikkim has
started will be used by the whole world tomor-
row,"Sikkim's Former Chief Minister Pawan
Kumar Chamling said,“this is our choice!"
24.What makes Sikkim start organic farming?
A.The decreasing farming areas.
B.The bad influence of pesticides.
C.The increasing cost of fertilizers.
D.The slow progress in agriculture.
25.What are farmers unsatisfied with?
A.The crop yield.
B.The use of pesticides.
C.The organic food's price.
D.The import of non-organic food.
26.What does the data in Paragraph 4 show?
A.The competition in the market is fierce.
B.The organic food has a big market in India.
C.Organic products meet new challenges.
D.The production of organic food is high.
27.What does the text mainly talk about?
A.Influence of organic farming on India.
B.The government's support for organic farming.
C.Development of organic farming in Sikkim.
D.Farmers'attitude toward organic farming.

How much sleep do we need? It's a funda-
mental question about a basic human function
we've been practicing for long, but there's still no
simple answer.But whether you're a morning or
evening person could be guided by your genes.
That said, your sleeping pattern will change natu-
rally with age, which is also reflected in the
National Sleep Foundation recommendations:it
suggests 14-17 hours of shuteye a day for new-
born babies and only 7-8 hours for over-65s.
But scientists said it was about more than
simple duration.Teens and people in their early
20s do want to go to bed later and get up later
too, something researchers suggest might be to do
with changing hormones(荷尔蒙).“On average,
there's about a two-hour difference in preferred sleep
times of somebody in their late teens or early twenties
to somebody in their late 50s or early 60s,"he
said."So asking a teenager to get up at 7 o'clock
in the morning is the equivalent of asking a 55-
year-old to get up at five in the morning.
At the end of the day,the best way to meas-
ure how much sleep you each need is to listen to
your own body.Do you rely on an alarm clock to
wake up?Do you take a long time to feel awake?
Are you dependent on coffee drinks to keep you
focused during the day?Are you overly impul-
sive(冲动的)or do you find yourself running a
·7
lot of traffic lights, for instance? All these could
be signs that you're not getting enough sleep.
And that,we know today,is bad.The envi-
ronment can affect your sleep preferences but
your genes stay.Scientists said that the under-
standing of the importance of sleep was "one of
the great achievements of modern neuroscience
(神经科学),”and that society was moving away
from the all-nighter culture to respect the need
for sleep.
28.What's the writer's intention of writing the

The fires in many parts of Brazil's Amazon
area have brought an international outcry to save
the world's largest rainforest.
The World Wildlife Foundation (WWF)says
the world's largest rainforest contains millions of
species of plants and animals. Many of them are
still unknown.Among the best known animals
are jaguars,eagles,pink river dolphins,parrots,
large snakes and many butterflies. The forests
contain over 40,000 kinds of plants and the 6,500
kilometers of rivers contain about 3,000 kinds of
freshwater fish.
The rainforest is often called the "lungs of
the planet."But that might not be the best way to
describe the area's importance to the world's eco-
system.A better way to think about the
Amazon's role is as a sink,taking heat-trapping
carbon dioxide,or CO2,from the atmosphere.
Currently, the world is releasing around 36
billion metric tons of CO,into the atmosphere ev-
ery year. And the Amazon absorbs about five
percent of the CO2 making it important in preven-
ting climate change.
While it is often said that the Amazon pro-
duces 20 percent of the world's oxygen,climate
scientists say that is not the case.Forests,inclu-
ding the Amazon, absorb about the same amount
of oxygen as they produce.Plants produce oxy-
gen through a process called photosynthesis, but
they also absorb it to grow,as animals and mi-
crobes do.
7
Scientists say the world's oxygen supply is
not directly at risk from the fires. However, that
does not mean the fires are not a problem. The
Amazon forest also absorbs other heat-trapping
gases produced by burning fossil fuels, like oil
and coal. The fires not only destroy parts of the
carbon-absorbing forests,but they release mil-
lions of metric tons of carbon into the air.
The Amazon rainforest is also important to
rainfall in the area.Deforestation makes
rains less frequent, extending the dry season.
The current fires in the Amazon are not wild-
fires. They are mostly set illegally by people who
are clearing the forest to raise cattle and crops.
32.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.Protection of wildlife in the Amazon.
B.Present situations of wildlife in the Amazon.
C.Dangerous conditions for wildlife in the
Amazon.
D.Rich animal and plant resources in the Am-
azon.
33.What do we know about the oxygen in the
Amazon?
A.It has been greatly reduced by the fires.
B.It puts the wildlife in the Amazon in dan-
ger.
C.The fires don't affect oxygen amount on
earth directly.
D.The forests in the Amazon need less oxy-
gen than before.
34.What does the author think of the fires in the
Amazon?
A.It's a man-made disaster.
B.It was caused by drought.
C.It resulted from deforestation.
D.It is not as serious as expected.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.How Are Fires in the Amazon Harming
Wildlife?
B.What Are the Risks of Fires in the Ama-
zon?
C.When Can the Fires in the Amazon Be Put
Out?
D.Why Are the Fires in the Amazon Hard to
Control?
