Tina Leverton was 62 when she bought her first pair of ballet shoes. She said putting her feet into the soft leather was very emotional. She said: “I’ve waited a long time for it.”
A few days later, Leverton took her first ballet class after seeing an advertisement in a newspaper. It showed older women dancing in a class near Leverton’s house. “As I came in the door, I found a big smile on my face. From the minute I started, I felt like coming home.”
Leverton had longed to dance as a child. Sadly, her parents couldn’t afford ballet classes, for they were first-generation Indian immigrants, struggling to make a living in the UK. Her father was a train driver on the underground in London and her mother held two cleaning jobs. Nonetheless, she harboured her dream of being a ballerina (芭蕾舞女演员).
At her present age, a grand plie-lowering to the floor with bent knees-seemed to be out of the question. It took her three months to master the move: leaping and landing on one foot. ” I love the struggle and the challenge of learning something new. People in their 60s have a lot of self-limiting beliefs: ‘I can’t do it,’ ‘I’m not good enough.’ And maybe they’re not good enough. But it doesn’t matter,” she said.
Ballet has been transformative. At a medical appointment a few months after Leverton’s first class, a nurse measured her at 163cm, half an inch taller than she had thought. She attributes (归因) the difference to improved posture. Her muscle tone has improved and her lower back pain has stopped. Dancing has also brought new friends. She met a group of older, more independent women and worked together towards a team award with the Royal Academy of Dance. And then, of course, there is the joyful feeling. “Ballet is all the therapy (治疗) I’ll ever need,” said Leverton.
4. How did Leverton feel after taking her dance lesson?
A. Tired. B. Confused. C. Shocked. D. Thrilled.
5. Why didn’t Leverton learn to dance she was young?
A. Her family was badly off. B. She wasn’t able to leap high.
C. Her family laughed at her dream. D. She had to focus on classes.
6. What did dancing bring to Leverton?
A. A team award. B. Money and fame.
C. Friendship and joy. D. A medical treatment.
7. What can we learn from Leverton’s story?
A. Hard work pays off. B. Never too old to pursue dreams.
C. Interest is the key to success. D. Money isn’t everything.
C
Every year, around 2,000 large sea animals, such as whales, die by swimming onto a beach or into water that’s too shallow for them to escape. This is known as “stranding”. This year, around 270 pilot whales are stranded after swimming into shallow water off the island of Tasmania in Australia, which is the largest whale-stranding event in Tasmania since 1935. The whales were discovered on Monday—two groups of about 60 and one group of over 200. People are working hard to save the whales, but at least 90 have died.
Rescue workers are trying to “refloat” the whales. But the whales are so large. Pilot whales can grow up to seven meters long and can weigh up to 2,300 kilograms. The whales are moved onto a sling, which allows the rescuers to drag them to deeper water. However, many of them get stranded in areas that are hard to reach. Rescuers are focusing on the easiest cases first. “We will take the animals with the best chance to start with,” says Dr. Kris Carlyon. So far, around 25 animals have been rescued. Rescue efforts are likely to continue.
Since the rescued whales are likely to return to the shore, workers are trying to make sure they don’t get stranded again in such wet weather. Dr. Carlyon says the weather around Tasmania favors whale survival. He describes it as “pretty ugly out there for people on the ground, but as far as the whales go, it’s perfect.”
Whales travel together in groups called “pods”, which work together closely. Members of the pod generally follow the leader, so if the leader gets stranded on the shores of Australia and New Zealand while travelling along the coasts, the others may do the same. It’s known that a single animal may beach itself if it’s sick or injured. It’s possible that when groups of whales get stranded, they may be following, or trying to protect an animal that’s unwell.
8. What do we know about this year’s stranding?
A. It’s the biggest in Tasmania’s history. B. It came into being in different groups.
C. It has caused whales to be seriously ill. D. It’s killed most of the stranded whales.
9. Which can best describe the job of refloating the whales?
A. Challenging. B. Interesting. C. Fruitless. D. Traditional.
10. What does Dr. Carlyon want to convey about the weather?
A. It helps whales swim back to the sea. B. It makes the whales strand again.
C. It is suitable for whales to keep alive. D. It divides whales into groups easily.
11. What does the last paragraph focus on?
A. What “pods” mean. B. Why stranding happens.
C. How a single animal strands. D. Where animals get stranded.
D
Asthma (哮喘) attacks happen when people are allergic to something in the air. When attacks happen, the airways in their lungs tighten and make it hard to breathe. More troublesome, people do not know when an attack will happen. But now, smartphones can help stop attacks.
Propeller Health is a company in Wisconsin. It wants to help those with breathing problems by using technology along with medicine. The company fitted an inhaler (吸入器) with a Bluetooth sensor, which connects to a smartphone app. The inhaler is full of medicine that, when breathed in, stops an asthma attack. When the patient uses the inhaler, the smartphone records when and where the person has an attack. The app then stores the records for doctors. The app not only tells doctors about the attack but also helps them figure out if something is happening around the patient that makes the asthma worse. Chris Hogg, a manager at Propeller Health, says collecting information from the inhaler is important. Technology like Bluetooth sensors is the future of health care. They will help doctors to decide what to pay attention to when treating patients.
Smart inhalers are part of a new direction in medical technology known as “connected health”. Fewer than half of asthma patients take their medicine correctly, said Line Neuhauser, a professor studying asthma treatments. She said the Propeller Bluetooth sensor tells people if they have taken their medicine correctly, which helps to prevent attacks and hospitalization.
Another benefit of the sensor is that the company can collect information from many people. Then they can see if certain areas set of more asthma attacks than others. “When we have a lot of users in the same region, we can do a lot to help them,” Hogg said.
One of Propeller's biggest tests of their system was in Louisville, Kentuck. They gave 140 people the Bluetooth sensors with inhalers. The study found that being close to railroads or factories was the main cause of asthma. They also found that public areas, such as schools and churches, also were causing asthma attacks. After the test, Propeller gave the information to the city, and the city is making rules to clean up the air.
12. What is the serious problem facing people with asthma?
A. They have to stay at home. B. They may be attacked at any time.
C. They find it hard to breathe usually. D. They don't know what they are allergic to.
13. What do we know about the Bluetooth sensor from Paragraph 2?
A. It gives patients timely treatment.
B. It tells patients how to keep away from poor environments.
C. It helps patients call their doctors when they are attacked.
D. It helps offer useful information about patients to doctors.
14. Propeller's test is mentioned in the last paragraph to_________________.
A. show how the Bluetooth sensors can help
B. show the popularity of the Bluetooth sensors
C. advise cities to take action to handle pollution
D. advise people with asthma to keep away from public areas
15. What's the best title of the text?
A. Technology helps people with asthma. B. How to use Bluetooth sensors.
C. Asthma has become a big danger. D. How to deal with asthma.

The benefits of positive emotions never stop after a few minutes of good feelings go back to normal. ______16______ It will serve to build skills and develop resources for use later in life. Let’s consider a real world example.
A child who runs around outside, swinging on branches and playing with friends, develops the ability to move athletically (physical skills), the ability to play with others and communicate with a team (social skills), and the ability to explore and examine the world around them (creative skills). _______17_______
These skills last much longer than the emotions that initiated them. Years later, that foundation of athletic movement might develop into a scholarship as a college athlete or the communication skills may turn into a job offer as a business manager. The happiness that promoted the exploration and creation of new skills has long since ended. ______18______ Researchers refer to this as the “broaden and build” theory because positive emotions broaden your sense of possibilities and open your mind, which in turn allows you to build new skills and resources that can provide value in other areas of your life.
______19______ Why? Because building skills for future use is irrelevant when there is immediate threat or danger (like the tiger on the path). All of this research boils down to the fact that positive thinking is so useful for developing valuable skills and appreciating the Big Picture of life.
But how can you get yourself to be positive in your life? ______20______ You probably know what things work well for you. Maybe it’s playing the guitar. Maybe it’s spending time with a certain person.
A. Negative emotions do the opposite.
B. However, the skills themselves live on.
C. But many of us look at things negatively.
D. The biggest benefit is an improved ability.
E That is why the “broaden and build” theory is valuable.
F. In this way, positive emotions help to build valuable skills.
G. Anything arousing feelings of joy, contentment, and love will do the trick.

Lincoln’s parents, Elissa and Jamie Hanley, were watching television in their Peterborough, England home one afternoon when a documentary about homelessness came on the air. As the Hanleys watched the program, they noticed their three-year-old son, Lincoln, paying close attention from his seat on the floor.
Though Lincoln was normally full of energy, running around and playing, the documentary seemed to hold his attention. The images of homelessness deeply affected the young boy, and by the time the program ended, Lincoln made it his mission to help those in need. He was particularly moved by a homeless woman and her dog, which led him to ask questions about their situation. Lincoln’s concern for their lack of food and shelter grew stronger as he thought about how they were living. He became focused on the idea of feeding people in need, feeling a strong desire to take action.
Elissa and Jamie were surprised that Lincoln, at such a young age, had understood the significance of the issue and felt driven to act. But they both fully supported their son’s newfound empathy (共情). “It was all Lincoln’s idea,” said Elissa. “We’ve not worked with homeless people before and when he wanted to do it we said ‘go for it’. We wanted to encourage him. He just wanted to feed the people and the dogs.”
Without hesitation, that very day, Lincoln’s parents gave him £20. Jamie, who was equally impressed by his son’s compassion (同情心), took him to the local market to pick up bread, sandwich meat, sweets, and dog food. They selected fresh ingredients (食材), with Lincoln carefully picking out items he thought would help others. Once they returned home, they made sandwiches, heated soup, and packed everything to deliver to the city center the next day.

第二节(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】One possible version:
However, a sudden snowstorm swept through their town the next morning. Streets quickly became impassable, and transportation came to a standstill. But Jamie, determined to continue their effort, decided they would walk to the city center, no matter the conditions. Dressed in warm clothes, the family set off on foot, carrying bags of sandwiches and sweets, and hot soup in containers. Along the way, Lincoln eagerly approached people, asking if they wanted any food. His excitement and belief in the power of giving only grew stronger, even as the storm tore through the area.
Lincoln’s journey of giving didn’t end with food sharing; he was already planning ahead. In addition to providing meals to the local homeless, he was planning to give out warm hats, gloves, and scarves for the upcoming winter months. His parents, impressed by his ongoing compassion, are confident that Lincoln will always be the kind of person who seeks ways to help others, no matter where life takes him.
