Exploring the Silk Roads: 4 stunning sites in 4 countries from Syria to China
There are countless extraordinary places to explore and these 4 choices represent only a handful of highlights.
Old City of Damascus, Syria
Damascus is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, whose craft industry was famed for its decorated swords. While Damask silk originated in China, it takes its name from the trading city of Damascus. One of the most arresting sights is the Great Mosque of Damascus. After the start of the Syrian civil war, the ancient city of Damascus was added to UNESCO’s list of world heritage in danger in 2013.
Merv, Turkmenistan
Merv, an ancient city and UNESCO World Heritage Site, has been home to human settlements since the bronze age. It was also once one of the most important cities in the Islamic world, attracting traders, scholars and travelers from distant regions. Today it is considered one of the oldest and best-preserved oasis-cities (绿洲城市) on central Asia’s Silk Roads.
Taxila, Pakistan
Easily reachable by car from Islamabad, Taxila is a UNESCO world heritage site. Situated at a Silk Roads crossroads, the “City of Cut Stone” was one of the ancient capitals of Gandhara, a territory stretching between the Oxus and Indus rivers. Among the vast site today is a Mesolithic cave and the city’s museum, which is home to at least 2,000 priceless objects.
Dunhuang, China
Dunhuang is an oasis city in north-west China that is home to the magnificent Mogao grottoes, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The wall paintings tell an illustrated story of the Silk Roads from the fourth to the 14th centuries. Almost 500 caves have been preserved, housing countless murals and more than 2,000 painted sculptures. Cave 302 from the Sui dynasty period contains a particularly classic Silk Roads scene: a two-humped camel pulling a wagon with a merchant inside.

A. China.
B. The trading city of Damascus.
C. The Great Mosque of Damascus.

Beginning in Venice on April 26, 2022, Italian hiker Vienna Cammarota arrived in China last month, the last stop of her journey to the East, travelling more than 20,000 kilometers. With a simple backpack and two hiking poles, Cammarota experienced a journey from Italy across Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkiye, Georgia, Iran, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kazakhstan to Kyrgyzstan.
Inspired by Marco Polo, who travelled to China along the ancient Silk Road in 1275, Cammarota set off from the legendary explorer’s hometown of Venice to retrace the route on foot. “Marco Polo lived in China for 17 years and in his travelog, he provided detailed descriptions of the country, which allowed Westerners to learn about the charm of this Eastern nation for the first time,” Cammarota says. She adds that she hopes to see more of modern China by following in Marco Polo’s footsteps.
As a hiker, Cammarota has paid special attention to road and bridge constructions, among which she was impressed by the Peljesac Bridge in Croatia, a project built by a union led by the China Road and Bridge Corporation. “When I see these buildings, I feel my heart swell with excitement. It’s only by witnessing them first-hand that you can truly grasp their incredible nature and can be shocked by their greatness,” she says.
She began studying The Travels of Marco Polo in 2000 and planned to retrace Marco Polo’s route along the Silk Road. Her goal is to experience the profound cultural heritage (遗产) of Chinese civilization, witness the development and achievements of modern China, and most importantly, call for global harmony and inclusiveness by bringing into modern view the Silk Road history and spirit to boost dialogue and understanding between the East and the West.
4. What can we learn about Cammarota’s journey?

Deeply rooted in the oral traditions of indigenous(土著的) communities, indigenous stories carry great significance. Such stories often convey moral lessons, societal norms and the shared wisdom of the community.Through these stories, the younger generations learn about their ancestors, the struggles they faced and the success they achieved. This develops a sense of continuity, strengthening the structure of indigenous societies. Moreover, by listening to and retelling these stories, community members contribute to the survival of indigenous languages.
Indigenous stories serve as windows into the different cultures worldwide. Each story is a unique expression of a community’s worldview, shaped by its history, environment and spiritual beliefs. Through these stories, we gain a deeper appreciation for the different ways people view the world. And by telling their stories, indigenous peoples invite others to look into their traditions, developing empathy(共情) and promoting a more interconnected world where different cultures are celebrated and respected.
Many indigenous stories explore themes of creation and the interconnectedness of the spiritual and material fields. Through these tales, individuals find a sense of purpose and connection to something greater than themselves.Indigenous stories provide stories of overcoming challenges, of not giving up in the face of hardship, and of the interconnectedness that combines communities together. In this way, storytelling promotes healing on both individual and communal levels.
While indigenous stories are of great importance, their continuation is threatened. For example, the impact of modernization has disturbed traditional storytelling practices. The use of indigenous stories for commercial purposes also hurts their authenticity(真实性). Fortunately, despite these challenges, there’s a growing global recognition of the need to preserve and reinstate indigenous stories.
Language restoration programs play an important role in preserving indigenous stories. They focus on teaching and bringing endangered languages back, which helps oral stories pass down. Cooperative projects between indigenous communities and external partners, such as researchers and storytellers, contribute to the record and preservation of oral traditions. Digital platforms, podcasts, and interactive media provide opportunities to share indigenous stories with a global audience, raising awareness about the importance of indigenous storytelling.
8. What can be learned about indigenous stories from paragraph 2?
A. They teach people how to live worldwide. B. They improve our ability to tell stories.
C. They promote cross-culture understanding. D. They are a symbol of wisdom and spirits.
9. What do indigenous stories mean for people in trouble?

10. What does the underlined word“reinstate” in paragraph 4 mean?

根据第四段中“While indigenous stories are of great importance, their continuation is threatened.( 虽然土著故事非常重要,但它们的延续受到了威胁。)”

It’s no secret that people feel like they are getting busier.
Yet, are we really crazy busy? Work undertaken at the University College London’s Centre for Time Use Research boldly claims that we are less, not more, busy over the past half century. How can that be?
Consider this: Modern inventions like the dishwasher, the washer and dryer, the microwave and any number of other labor-saving devices, have fundamentally diminished the time needed for household chores. And “work hours per week declined for a century,” writes Kyle Kowalski, a best-selling author, who investigates in his book the reason we feel busy in such a convenient society.
It isn’t just the reality of how we spend our time that has shifted, either. Culturally, how we define “busy” has also changed considerably.
Historically working long hours didn’t generate admiration. In ancient Rome, otium, the Latin word signifying freedom from work and leisure time, was a dear activity to the wealthy who could happily afford not to work for a living.
What a difference a few decades makes! Elon Musk, the wealthiest person on the planet, portrays himself as a workaholic, working 80 to 100 hours per week. Celebrities brag about their busyness and crazy work schedules on social media. Recent data from the U. S Census Bureau also suggests that the highest earners work the longest hours.
Part of this monumental shift is down to the gradual rise of knowledge-intensive economies. Labor markets are increasingly highly structured and competitive, where human capital is one of the most prized economic assets. On the supply side, workers invest heavily in their education and skill development, recognizing that their human capital is their most marketable resource. On the demand side, companies, institutions, and headhunters compete to attract top talent and the best brains. All of this has helped usher in an environment where long work hours have become a status symbol; a way for individuals to demonstrate their worth.
As Generative Artificial Intelligence enhances our productivity and efficiency at work, will we use the extra time to enjoy our lives, or will we simply push more tasks into an already overloaded schedule, seeking a sense of importance?
12. Which of the following could be Kyle Kowalski’s work?
A. Why Do We Feel So Busy When Research Says We’re Not?
B. What Do Modern Inventions Bring To Us Nowadays?
C. How Does Modern Technology Weaken Our Busyness?
D. When Will Household Chores Be Totally Done By AI?
13. Why is Elon Musk mentioned in paragraph 6?
A. To introduce a topic. B. To support an idea.
C. To make a prediction. D. To clarify a definition.
14. Which of the following best explains “monumental” underlined in paragraph 7?
A. Major. B. Positive. C. Abrupt. D. Slight.
15. Why does the author raise the questions in the last paragraph?
A. To urge readers to seek self-importance.
B. To advocate leading a busy and admirable life.
C. To inspire readers to reflect on the busy lifestyle.
D. To suggest fighting against the overloaded schedule.
A 13. B 14. A 15. C
根据文章第一段“Work undertaken at the University College London’s Centre for Time Use Research boldly claims that we are less, not more, busy over the past half century. How can that be? (伦敦大学学院时间使用研究中心进行的一项研究大胆声称,我们在过去的半个世纪里变得不那么忙了,而不是更加忙碌。怎么可能呢?)”以及第三段“And “work hours per week declined for a century,” writes Kyle Kowalski, a best-selling author, who investigates in his book the reason we feel busy in such a convenient society.(畅销书作家凯尔·科瓦尔斯基在他的书中写道,“每周工作时间减少了一个世纪”,他在书中调查了我们在这样一个便利的社会中感到忙碌的原因)”可推知,凯尔·科瓦尔斯基的书与我们为什么觉得忙碌有关,故选A。
根据第六段“Elon Musk, the wealthiest person on the planet, portrays himself as a workaholic, working 80 to 100 hours per week. Celebrities brag about their busyness and crazy work schedules on social media. Recent data from the U. S Census Bureau also suggests that the highest earners work the longest hours.(埃隆·马斯克,地球上最富有的人,把自己描述为一个工作狂,每周工作80到100小时。
根据文章最后一段提出的“As Generative Artificial Intelligence enhances our productivity and efficiency at work, will we use the extra time to enjoy our lives, or will we simply push more tasks into (当生成式人工智能提高我们的生产力和工作效率时,我们会利用额外的时间享受生活,还是会简单地将更多任务塞进已经过载的安排中,寻求一种重要感?)”

I had been a straight-A student since the first grade. At our school, there was one ultimate prize: the scholarship jacket, a beautiful navy blue jacket with gold letters reading “Top Scholar.” I stared at it longingly every time I passed the trophy case; I wanted that jacket more than anything. My family was poor. My grandfather worked as a farmhand, and we lived in a small cottage. We could barely afford my school supplies, let alone a fancy jacket like that. Every year, the jacket was awarded to the student with the highest cumulative grades. My teachers often praised my diligence, and I knew in my heart I was the one who deserved it.
But just a week before the award ceremony, the principal, Mr. Harris, called me into his office. “Marta,” he said, his expression serious as he pushed his glasses up his nose, “the school board has made a new decision. Starting this year, the scholarship jacket will cost $15. We can’t afford to fund it anymore.” I felt the blood drain from my face. Fifteen dollars might sound small to others, but it was a fortune for my family.
I dragged my feet home that afternoon, tired and heavy-hearted. The dirt road felt longer than usual, and the autumn wind chilled me to the bone. When I finally pushed open our creaking door, the comforting smell of my grandfather’s cornbread met me. He was sitting at the kitchen table, repairing his work boots. He looked up and smiled, but his grin faded when he saw my upset face. “What’s wrong, honey?” he asked, setting down his needle and thread. He patted the chair next to him, his voice full of warmth. Through tears, I explained everything, handing him the principal’s note. He read it slowly, his weathered face hardening. He didn’t say anything for a long time. Then he looked at me, his eyes firm but gentle. “I sacrificed a lot to send you to school, Marta, but I won’t pay for that jacket. It’s not a reward if you have to buy it — it’s just a jacket then.”
注意:
1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;
I ran back to the principal’s office the next morning, determined to fight for what I deserved.

On the day of the award ceremony, I walked into the school auditorium (礼堂) with my grandfather nervously.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1
I ran back to the principal’s office the next morning, determined to fight for what I deserved. My heart pounding, I stood before Mr. Harris and repeated my grandfather’s words. “The jacket is a symbol of hard work. It shouldn’t have a price.” I said, my voice gaining strength even as my hands trembled. The principal listened, his expression changing from mild surprise to deep reflection. After a moment of silence, he replied, “I see your point, Marta. What you’re defending is the very spirit of this award. I’ll present your case to the board again.” Though no promise was made, a small flame of hope was kindled in my heart.
Paragraph 2
On the day of the award ceremony, I walked into the school auditorium with my grandfather nervously. So anxious was I that I barely heard the opening speeches. Then came the moment — my name was called. Walking to the stage, I saw Principal Harris holding the jacket, a warm smile on his face. He announced, “The board has decided the scholarship jacket will remain what it has always been — a pure honor for academic excellence, with no charge.” As the jacket was placed over my shoulders, the applause filling the room, I looked at my grandfather. There he stood, wiping a tear from the corner of his eye, his face glowing with pride. That day, not only did I receive a jacket, but a lesson was engraved in my heart: some things, like dignity and justice, are priceless; and standing up for them makes all the difference.

1. Where did Damask silk get its name from?
A. China.
B. The trading city of Damascus.
C. The Great Mosque of Damascus.
D. The Syrian craft industry.
2. What can we infer about Taxila from the text?
A. It was the only ancient capital of Gandhara.
B. It is remote from Islamabad.
C. It has a rich history and cultural heritage.
D. Its museum has less than 2,000 objects.
3 What do these four sites have in common?
A. They were all known as silk trading centers.
B. They are all capitals of their respective countries.
C. They are all famous for their modern architecture.
D. They all have UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Historically, working long hours didn’t generate admiration.
A To introduce a topic.

1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

I ran back to the principal’s office the next morning, determined to fight for what I deserved.
