六、 选做题
He has many names. In the West, people call him Li Po. But in China, he is known as Li Bai. During his lifetime, he had other names—Li Taibai, Green Lotus Scholar(青莲居士), and Li Twelve. __1__ It was often used by his friends and fellow poets.
By his death, he had become known as a great poet and was called zhexian(谪仙) by his admirers. Over the past 12 centuries, he has been known as shixian. Because he was a drinker, he was also called jiuxian.
__2__ In truth, we are uncertain about its exact date and cause. In January 764, the newly enthroned(新登基的) emperor Daizong(唐代宗) ordered Li Bai to serve as an official at court(朝廷). When the royal decree(圣旨) reached Dangtu County, in modernday Anhui Province, where Li Bai was supposedly(据说) located, the local officials could not find him. They soon discovered that he had died more than a year before. When exactly had it happened? What had caused his death? No one could tell.
However, those who cherished Li Bai's poetry didn't like such a story of uncertainty. __3__ In one version, he died of alcohol poisoning; this was in keeping with his lifelong love of drinking. Another claims that he died of an illness. __4__ In this version, he drowned(溺毙) after jumping from a boat to catch the moon's reflection on a river. This scene may sound too romantic to be true, but this version is the most widely accepted one. __5__ Even in his early childhood, he was in love with it. In his poem “Night Trip in Gulang”, he writes:
As a young child, I had no idea what the moon was
And I called it a white jade plate.
Then I wondered if it was a mirror at the Jasper Terrace
That flew away and landed on top of green clouds.
A. There are several stories about his death.
B. They began to give different versions of his death.

D. To make it more fantastic, they created many other versions.

F. They tried hard to find out the exact death time and cause of the great poet.

Dear_Tom,
It's wonderful to know you're interested in ancient Chinese poetry! These poems are like tiny windows into China's past—short but powerful.
When I read these poems, I feel like I'm having a conversation with poets who lived centuries ago. Their words make me appreciate the beauty in ordinary things—a moonlit night, a falling leaf, or the sound of rain. Sometimes just a few lines can calm my mind and help me see life differently. The poems show how people across time share similar emotions, and that connection feels special.
I'd be happy to suggest some easytounderstand poems to start with!
Yours_faithfully,
Li_Hua
