WELCOME FOOD LOVERS!
Enjoy! Share your recipes. SUNDAY, JANUARY 25
Every summer I travel home to Budapest. My grandmother lives in the city centre. When I arrive, she always gives me some coffee and a piece of honey cake. She’s a wonderful cook!
Unfortunately, my grandmother doesn’t have any recipes on paper. She never writes them down, and she doesn’t have any cookbooks. She doesn’t need them. “How do you make goulash, Grandma?” I asked. “Oh, that’s simple,” she answered. “You need some meat, onions, oil, flour, paprika (红椒粉), salt, and a green pepper. Then cook everything for two to three hours.”
That is a simple recipe, but my first goulash was not very successful. I need exact instructions, so now I watch her in her kitchen and write down every step and every ingredient in her goulash recipe. She cooks, and I write down the ingredients: 2 pounds of meat, 2 onions, 1/2 cup of flour, 1 teaspoon of paprika, 1 green pepper, and 2 teaspoons of salt.

Gianna Peak, an 11-year-old girl, believes that wearing a new schoolbag can make any child feel special. But some families don’t have enough money for schoolbags. This is why Gianna donates them to children from these families.
She started this to help the community she loves so much. She thinks people should care enough to make those children feel special, no matter what situation life has put them through.
For Gianna, getting a new schoolbag is exciting. So she wants children who cannot buy one to feel excited and special too. She also wants them to have what they need so they can feel prepared on their first day of school. To make this happen, she not only gives children schoolbags as gifts, but also fills each one with things like notebooks, colored pencils, and paper.
To pay for her project, Gianna uses her birthday money and the money she gets from doing weekly housework. Her mother also joins her in asking people for help. They create a budget and compare prices at different stores to find the best prices.
Gianna has some advice for other young people, “Don’t think you can’t set goals and achieve them because you’re young. If you get an answer of ‘no’, that’s not called failure (失败). It just means you need to find a new way for an answer of ‘yes’. Even when it’s hard, never give up on your goal.”
4. What does the underlined word “donates” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Throws away. B. Shows to friends.
C. Gives to people as gifts. D. Sells at a very low price.
5. How does Gianna get the money for her project?
A. She sells birthday cakes to make money.
B Her mother gives her all the money she needs.

7. Which word can describe Gianna best?
A Kind. B. Polite. C. Honest. D. Direct.
C
Whales and dolphins (海豚) use sound to look for food, find their way through the dark oceans, and communicate. Sometimes, however, human noise causes problems for the sounds that whales and dolphins make. The result can be very bad for these animals.
Sounds are louder and travel farther under the water. Scientists believe that even faraway noise from human activities can be a problem for dolphins and whales. This noise can even come from ships, submarines (潜艇), and the machine that is used to search for oil and gas. Noise under the water causes whales to communicate more loudly. However, if the noise gets too loud, whales and dolphins will stop communicating.
If dolphins and whales stop communicating, important information will be lost. For example, a dolphin that finds food won’t be able to tell other dolphins. Mother whales will lose contact with their babies. Animals may die on the beach instead of finding their way across the sea.
What can we do to protect dolphins and whales? We can try to create less noise. Ships and submarines can stay away from areas with a large number of these animals. Scientists also believe that a “curtain” of bubbles (气泡幕帘) around places with big machines can lower the noise under the water. If we do nothing, dolphins and whales will be in danger.
8. What do whales and dolphins use sound for?
A. Playing, sleeping, and finding food. B. Finding food, finding ways, and “talking”.
C. Fighting making friends, and exploring. D. Making noise, having fun, and traveling.
9. What is the main problem for dolphins and whales?
A. Noise from humans influences them. B. They cannot travel farther without noise.
C. They cannot make loud enough sounds. D. Ships and machines take their living places.
10. What will happen if whales stop communicating?
A. Whales have to find new oceans without noise.
B Whales will safely find their way across the sea.
C. Mother whales can tell others about food quickly.
D. Baby whales may get separated from their mothers.
11. Why did the writer write this text?
A. To ask people to protect whales and dolphins from noise.
B. To introduce different kinds of human noise under the sea.
C. To explain how whales and dolphins use sound in the ocean.
D. To show noise makes whales and dolphins communicate better.

Have you ever been really into something that you forget what’s going on around you? This is called getting in the flow (流).
Sometimes you can be so focused on what you’re doing that everything seems to disappear. A psychologist (心理学家) called Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi said this is what “in the flow” is. It’s a happy feeling you get when you’re doing something challenging but fun. “Time flies,” Csikszentmihalyi said. “You put all your heart into it and do your very best. It’s the secret to happiness.”
Another psychologist, Kendra Cherry, the writer of The Everything Psychology Book, says getting in the flow makes you proud (骄傲) of your achievements. It also helps you think more clearly because you forget everything else. If you’re focusing on a game of chess, for example, you’re not worrying about schoolwork or what other people think. This helps you stop bad feelings from growing and feel less worried. Being in the flow also makes you feel good, because you’re doing something for yourself, not for a prize or to make other people happy.
Finding the flow is different for each person. Cherry says it can take you 10 to 15 minutes to focus your attention on something before you get fully into it. “Flow often happens when you’re doing something you enjoy and in which you are quite skilled,” she says, “so pick a challenge that’s fun but you know you can do it, like solving a math problem or drawing. Find a quiet space and away from screens. It also helps if you’re doing something you want to, not because you have to. Start by practising with something you love, then try other things. Getting in the flow can make activities such as music practice or homework more enjoyable too.”
12. Which is an example of being “in the flow”?
A. Thinking about dinner when having lessons.
B. Reading a great book and forgetting the time.
C. Talking with friends while painting a picture.
D. Stopping doing homework to talk with others.
13. What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Getting in the flow. B. Feeling proud of yourself.
C. Doing something challenging. D. Reading The Everything Psychology Book.
14. What is Cherry’s advice for finding the flow?
A. To check phone screens often. B. To do things you don’t like or can’t do.
C. To try something you have to do. D. To choose a fun thing and do it quietly.
15. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. It discusses how hard it is to find “flow”.
B. It explains what challenges “flow” brings.
C. It introduces what “flow” is and how to get into it.
D. It tells when and how psychologists studied “flow”.

C. Fighting, making friends, and exploring.
B. Whales will safely find their way across the sea.
C. Mother whales can tell others about food quickly.
D. Baby whales may get separated from their mothers.
11. Why did the writer write this text?
A. To ask people to protect whales and dolphins from noise.
B. To introduce different kinds of human noise under the sea.

As for making up with Max? Just talk to him face to face, man. Tell him how much this friendship means to you. If you’re too nervous, shoot him a nice text or give him a call. He’ll come around, I promise.
Hope this helps and you’re not alone!
