二、阅读理解(2025·河北)
One bright morning, I was out for my usual run when I met an elderly lady who was waving her phone at me and speaking in a language that I couldn’t understand. It sounded like she was in a hurry to get somewhere. I quickly realized that she was lost and couldn’t speak any English.
She showed me some map screenshots(截图) on her phone, but I had no idea how to read them. So, I quickly downloaded a translation app and we used the app to communicate. She spoke into the microphone in her language and it translated her words into English for me to understand. I typed my answers and we were able to communicate!
首页
I soon understood that she needed to get home, which was a long walk away. She didn’t want to use any transportation, but I offered to walk her to a bus stop where she could call her daughter for a ride. As we walked, we laughed and joked, even though we couldn’t understand each other’s language. It was a pretty fun experience!
The elderly lady was very grateful for my help and kept thanking me for my time. I had to keep reminding her that it was no trouble at all and that I was happy to help. It was amazing how just a small act of kindness made such a big difference to her.
首页
Finally, we reached the bus stop and she made her call. We said our goodbyes and she gave me a heartwarming smile. Even though we used technology to communicate, it was lucky that we could help each other out and not be stopped by our different languages.

Talk to People You Disagree with
Everyone occasionally has disagreements with friends or family members. For example, you might not agree which restaurant makes the best pizza. 1 Although disagreements can be uncomfortable, there are some steps you can take to make conversations go on well.
See their perspective
Even if you don’t agree with someone’s opinions, you can still listen to what they have to say. One way is to listen without interrupting(打断) them. 2 You can start by saying, “OK. I know what you mean. You are saying ...”
首页
Use respectful language
3 You can easily get angry especially if it is on a subject you care about a lot. Some people shoot down others’ opinions by laughing at them or attacking their judgements. Avoid using impolite words, like “stupid” or “ridiculous”. Instead, focus on speaking calmly.
Stick to the facts
During a conversation, if you are interrupted and doubted, stay calm and ask for a chance to speak your opinion out. Relax your shoulders and say what you would like to say. 4
首页
Find common ground
You may find that you can’t change the other person’s mind, and they may not change yours. 5 In the end, you may gain a better understanding of each other’s opinion.
