二、阅读理解
If you’re concerned about the cost of gas and the environmental impact of gas-powered cars, and don’t want to worry about the charging challenges associated with the pure electric vehicle (EV), it’s time to take a closer look at a hybrid (混合的) electric vehicle (HEV). While salespeople might simply advise you to “plug in daily and use gas for longer trips,” understanding the underlying mechanics is key to determining if an HEV truly fits your needs. Essentially, an HEV offers you the best of gas cars and EVs.
An HEV has two sources of power: an internal combustion (燃烧) engine (ICE) and at least one electric motor. There are two main types of HEV: parallel (并联式) hybrid and series hybrid.
The parallel hybrid (PHEV) aims to keep the core designs of the conventional gas-powered vehicles while lowering the operation costs and improving the environmental performance. Reduced to its basics, its system uses ICE and electric motors to power the wheels — either together or independently. This structure performs reliably on long-distance journeys and complex road conditions, where the combustion engine operates efficiently.
In the case of series hybrid (SHEV), the vehicle runs only on electricity, which is from the battery. When the battery is exhausted, the ICE switches on — not to drive the wheels directly, but to power the generator and charge the battery. This setup offers smoother and quieter driving operation which is similar to pure electric vehicles. It’s generally more eco-friendly, and further reduces the cost of use.
In today’s market, conventional gas cars are going significantly cheaper, while stylish pure electric vehicles have become symbols of modern status. The HEV, striking a practical balance between these two extremes, certainly deserves a closer look.

【1题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“While salespeople might simply advise you to “plug in daily and use gas for longer trips,” understanding the underlying mechanics is key to determining if an HEV truly fits your needs. Essentially, an HEV offers you the best of gas cars and EVs.(虽然销售人员可能只是建议你“每天插电,长途旅行使用汽油”,但了解其基本原理是确定混合动力汽车是否真正符合你需求的关键。从本质上讲,混合动力汽车为你提供了汽油车和电动汽车的最佳性能)”和最后一段“The HEV, striking a practical balance between these two extremes, certainly deserves a closer look. (HEV在这两个极端之间达到了实用的平衡,当然值得更仔细地审视)”可知,文章强调HEV结合了燃油车和电动车的优点,达到了实用性的平衡。因此,与其他类型车辆相比,HEV的优势在于更实用。故选D项。
【2题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“When the battery is exhausted, the ICE switches on — not to drive the wheels directly, but to power the generator and charge the battery.(当电池耗尽时,内燃机启动——不是直接驱动车轮,而是为发电机提供动力并为电池充电)”可知,串联混合动力汽车中的内燃机直接为电池充电。故选D项。
【3题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“The parallel hybrid (PHEV) aims to keep the core designs of the conventional gas-powered vehicles while lowering the operation costs and improving the environmental performance. Reduced to its basics, its system uses ICE and electric motors to power the wheels — either together or independently. This structure performs reliably on long-distance journeys and complex road conditions, where the combustion engine operates efficiently.(并联混合动力(PHEV)旨在保持传统汽油动力汽车的核心设计,同时降低运营成本,提高环保性能。 故选A项。
Across the rich world, well-educated people increasingly work longer than the less-skilled. Some 65% of American men aged 62-74 with a professional degree are in the workforce, compared with 32% of men with only a high-school certificate. This gap is part of a deepening divide between the well-education well off and the unskilled poor. Rapid technological advance has raised the incomes of the highly skilled while squeezing those of the unskilled. The consequences, for individual and society, are profound.
The world is facing as astonishing rise in the number of old people, and they will live longer than ever before. Over the next 20 years the global population of those aged 65 or more will almost double, from 600 million to 1.1 billion. The experience of the 20th century, when greater longevity translated into more years in retirement rather than more years at work, has persuaded many observers that this shift will lead to slower economic growth, while the swelling ranks of pensioners will create government budget problems.
But the notion of a sharp division between the working young and the idle old misses a new trend, the growing gap between the skilled and the unskilled. Employment rates are falling among younger unskilled people, whereas older skilled folk are working longer. The divide is most extreme in America, where well-educated baby-boomers (二战后生育高峰期出生的美国人) are putting off retirement while many less-skilled younger people have dropped out of the workforce.
Policy is partly responsible. Many European governments have abandoned policies that used to encourage people to retire early. Rising life expectancy, combined with the replacement of generous defined-benefit pension plans with less generous defined-contribution ones, means that even the better-off must work longer to have a comfortable retirement. But the changing nature of work also plays a big role. Pay has risen sharply for the highly educated, and those people continue to get rich rewards into old age because these days the educated elderly are more productive than the previous generation. Technological change may well strengthen that shift: the skills that make up for computers, from management knowhow to creativity, do not necessarily decline with age.
4. What has helped deepen the divide between the well-off and the poor?
A. Longer life expectancies.
B. A rapid technological advance.
C. Profound changes in the workforce.
D. A growing number of the well-educated.
5 What do many observers predict in view of the experience of the 20th century?
A. Economic growth will slow down.
B. Government budgets will increase
C. More people will try to pursue higher education.
D. There will be more competition in the job market.
6. What is the result of policy changes in European countries?
A. Unskilled workers m ay choose to retire early.
B. More people have to receive in-service training.
C. Even wealthy people must work longer to live comfortably in retirement.
D. People may be able to enjoy generous defined-benefits from pension plans.
7. What is characteristic of work in the 21st century?
A. Computers will do more complicated work.
B. More will be taken by the educated young.
C. Most jobs to be done will be creative ones
D. Skills are highly valued regardless of age
【答案】4. B 5. A 6. C 7. D

【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“The experience of the 20th century, when greater longevity translated into more years in retirement rather than more years at work, has persuaded many observers that this shift will lead to slower economic growth,”可知,20世纪的经验是,更长的寿命意味着更多的退休时间,而不是更多的工作时间,这让许多观察人士相信,这种转变将导致经济增长放缓。由此可知,许多专家鉴于20世纪的经验看,未来的经历发展速度将变得缓慢。故选A项。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段终的“Many European governments have abandoned policies that used to encourage people to retire early. Rising life expectancy, combined with the replacement of generous defined-benefit pension plans with less generous defined-contribution ones, means that even the better-off must work longer to have a comfortable retirement.”
根据最后一段“Technological change may well strengthen that shift: the skills that make up for computers, from management knowhow to creativity, do not necessarily decline with age.”可知,技术变革很可能会加强这种转变:从管理技能到创造力,弥补计算机的技能不一定会随着年龄的增长而衰退。由此可知,21世纪工作的特点是无论年龄大小,技能都很重要。故选D项。
The Price of Gold
For decades gold miners have pillaged the lush Peruvian Amazon forest of Madre de Dios in search of the precious metal. Now a study reports that illegal mining is sharply on the rise despite the local government’s efforts to curb it and this is taking a heavy toll on the ecosystem.
In 2012 the Peruvian government announced a lot of legal decrees to defend Madre de Dios — considered the country’s biodiversity capital — against miners.
Authorities conducted raids, dismantled clandestine camps, and regulated fuel and supply traffic. Despite the crackdown, the total mining area had increased by about 40 percent (to around 170,000 acres) just four years later. According to the most comprehensive analysis to date, the practice — possibly enabled by poor control of the region and greater highway access — extended into at least one of the forest’s two national reserves, protected areas where mining is prohibited.
Extracting gold from rock can contaminate the environment. Illegal mining activities often use liquid mercury, a toxic (有毒的) chemical that can drip into the soil or be burned off and released as toxic fumes. And the consequences of illegal mining go well beyond those of the extraction process. Miners often chop down thousands of acres of forest with heavy machinery that scars the landscape.
“You can see those dredging machines sucking silt (淤泥) from the river, hear their engines,” says Raul Tupayachi, a Peruvian biologist at the Carnegie Institution for Science and a co-author of the study. “We hoped our data would show a drop in deforestation rates after the government actions tried to curb mining activities,” he says. “But we saw that, in the long run, they haven’t really made much of an impact.”
The study, which analyzed satellite images taken between 1999 and 2016 and was published last August in Environmental Research Letters, found an initial decline in deforestation after the government’s actions in 2012. By 2013, however, forest loss rates had ballooned. New mines started to appear in the following years. They invaded protected areas such as the Tambopata National Reserve — home to the indigenous Ese Ejja, Quechua and Aymara peoples, as well as brightly colored macaws, giant river otters and jaguars. By 2016 mining operations had cut down at least 1,287 acres of forest within the reserve. William Llactayo, a geographical engineer at Peru’s Ministry of Environment, who did not take part in the work, says the study comes at a critical time. “If the mining trend continues,” Llactayo says, “a lot of these areas will be irreversibly degraded in the years to come.”
8. The underlined phrase “taking a heavy toll on” is closest in meaning to ______.
A. contributing to B. negatively impacting on
C. falling victim to D. taking full advantage of
9. How does illegal mining influence the ecosystem?
A. By polluting and deforesting the land.
B. By extracting precious gold from rock.
C. By burning and releasing toxic fumes.
D. By turning forests into farmland.
10. How does Raul Tupayachi feel when he is making the comment?
A. Anxious. B. Hopeful. C. Disappointed. D. Surprised.
11. According to William Llactayo, the phenomenon revealed in the study report is ______.
A. important B. continuous C. irreversible D. alarming
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. C 11. D

It is universally acknowledged that renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and hydropower are all much better for the climate than fossil fuels. It is true for wind and solar. However, the picture for hydropower is more complicated than we think.
A new study by the Environmental Defense Fund analyzed the climate impacts of 1,500 hydropower facilities across the globe. That accounts for about half of hydropower generation worldwide. The researchers looked at whether the facilities behave as a greenhouse gas sink or as a source. To figure this out, they looked into all the different components that help determine a hydropower facility's greenhouse gas emissions (排放).
“There are so many contributors to greenhouse gas emissions from hydropower — but essentially, the majority of greenhouse gas emissions arise from the reservoir (水库) itself, as vegetation and soils are submerged underwater in the dam that is used for the hydropower generation.” said lissa Ocko, a senior climate scientist at the Environmental Defense Fund and co-author of the study. As the submerged vegetation breaks down, it releases greenhouse gases such as CO2.
“The larger the surface area of the reservoir, the more greenhouse gases are going to be given out from that reservoir. Also, the temperature plays a role as well how warm the reservoir is will affect how much greenhouse gases are produced and given out from the reservoir.” added Ocko.
Through their analysis, Ocko and her co-author Steven Hamburg, also with the Environmental Defense Fund, discovered that the climate impacts of hydropower cover a complete range. The good news is that some facilities perform just as well as wind and solar. But shockingly, more than 100 facilities are actually worse for the climate than fossil fuels. The study is in the journal Environmental Science and Technology.
This finding doesn't mean we should forget about hydropower. “But we just need to be careful to make sure that we have climate benefits. There are a lot of situations where hydropower can be equal to wind and solar. So it really depends on the specific facility." said Ocko.
12. How do scientists prove hydropower facilities' effect on the climate?
A. By making comparisons. B. By conducting experiments.
C. By referring to previous studies. D. By analyzing causes and effects.
13. What are the main sources of greenhouse gases from hydropower?
A. Vegetation and soils. B. Heat and sunlight.
C. Pollutants in the reservoir. D. Components of the generators.
14. What have Ocko and her co-author Steven Hamburg found?
A. The surface area of a reservoir decides the climate.
B. Hydropower often influences the climate in all aspects.
C. Some facilities perform much better than wind and solar.
D. Fossil fuels are worse for the climate than over 100 facilities.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. Scientists urge an end to hydropower.
B. Hydropower is not necessarily green.
C. Hydropower is worse than fossil fuels.
D. Renewable energy is a complicated issue.
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. B 15. B

六、书面表达
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Hmm,” Michael Armus muttered to himself. He’d just set foot into the Bank of the West in Woodland, California, and felt the tension. “Something is not right.” It was a little before 11 am on a sunny May morning, and the 69-year-old retired auto body painter was there to deposit a check. Normally, whenever Armus visited, he’d be greeted with loud words of “Hi, Mr. Armus!” from the tellers. However, none of the tellers acknowledged and welcomed him on that day.
As Armus approached the teller windows, he noticed the three employees had similar worried looks on their faces. He heard one teller whisper to another, “He’s got a note.” Armus looked to his left and noticed a man at another window with his striped T-shirt pulled up to partially cover his face. The man’s hands trembled as he clutched the note, and Armus could see a glimpse of a small object that looked like a gun tucked into his waistband. “This is a robbery,” thought Armus. He heard the man say, “I don’t want to hurt anybody.” Minutes earlier, the man had passed a note to the teller, demanding cash and saying he had a gun.
“I’ve seen this guy!” thought Armus. He recognized the would-be robber as someone he’d passed several times on a street corner reading aloud from his Bible. Armus remembered the man’s intense gaze and the gentle way he spoke about his beliefs, often stopping to engage with anyone who showed the slightest interest. It was clear that the man was deeply passionate about his faith, and Armus had always admired his dedication. Suddenly, instead of being frightened, Armus felt compassion for him, and a thought popped into his head: Maybe I can help.
He walked over to the man, 43-year-old Edward, and calmly asked, “What’s wrong? Don’t you have a job?” Shocked, Edward looked at Armus and exclaimed, “There is nothing in this town for me. Nothing!” Then, with tears streaming down his face, he said, “I just want to go to prison.”

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
“Let the police arrest me,” Edward shouted. His voice trembled with a mixture of desperation and relief. Tellers were silent and did not know what to do next. Michael Armus stood nearby, his heart heavy, but his resolve to help him was firm. He gently placed a hand on Edward’s shoulder, trying to convey a sense of calm and understanding. “It doesn’t matter, bro,” Armus said softly, “We’ll get through this together.” Then, Armus pulled Edward into his arms.
Edward began to sob in Armus’s hug. His tears streamed down his face as the weight of his despair finally found an outlet. Armus held him tightly, whispering words of comfort and reassurance, reminding him that it was never too late to start a new life. As Edward’s sobs stopped, he looked up at Armus with gratitude. He realized that in his darkest hour, he had found a beacon of hope and compassion. With newfound determination, Edward agreed to surrender peacefully, knowing that there was a brighter future waiting for him beyond the shadows of his past.

2. What does the ICE in a series hybrid car directly work on?
A. Replacing the generator. B. Driving the wheels.
C. Starting the electric motor. D. Charging the battery.
3. In which aspect are PHEVs generally better than SHEVs?
A. Mountain road driving. B. In-city transportation.

5. What do many observers predict in view of the experience of the 20th century?
A. Economic growth will slow down.
B Government budgets will increase
C. More people will try to pursue higher education.
D. There will be more competition in the job market.
6. What is the result of policy changes in European countries?
A. Unskilled workers m ay choose to retire early.
B More people have to receive in-service training.
C Even wealthy people must work longer to live comfortably in retirement.
A. important B. continuous C. irreversible D. alarming
