六、 选做题[2025湖北期末]
As an important part of our everyday lives, music is increasingly being used in medical treatment. Besides proving very useful in cancer treatment, managing longterm pain and even helping the brain recover after a stroke, researchers have been making great progress in using music to help patients with dementia(痴呆). It reduces patients' anxiety or stress, lifts their spirits, and improves their performance at work.
So why does music appear to have such a powerful effect on people with dementia? About ten years ago, researchers discovered that when people listened to music, many areas of the brain took part in processing it. Research has also shown music might help the brain and its connections grow strong again. It is believed that music could help people with dementia by fixing or strengthening damaged neural(神经的) connections and cells.
It's not just any music that has a great effect on the brain, though. Familiar and favourite music has been shown to have the biggest influence on the way we feel, and is closely connected with memory and emotions. This is because listening to our favourite songs helps to produce feelgood hormones(激素) that give us a sense of pleasure. During and after listening to favourite music, people with dementia experienced less pain and anxiety, and their general feelings improved.
Other researchers have even begun testing the effects of music training programmes to support cognition(认知) for people with dementia. Results have been promising so far, with adults in the study showing improved conditions, compared to those who took part in just physical exercise.
So, music is likely to continue to be a useful medical treatment for people with dementia. But based on what we know so far, it's important that it comes from the patient's own music collection and is used together with other medical treatments such as taking medicine.

My_Favourite_Singer
In 2016, the famous US musician Bob Dylan was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
As a famous songwriter and singer, he has created a lot of remarkable works, especially when it comes to folk songs. One of the most typical songs is his “The Times They Are AChangin'”. His works reflect the characteristics of the times, making great contributions to American culture, and even to the world culture.
He is such a singer who can amuse me with most of his songs. Because of the rich lyrics and his pleasant voice, he has become my favourite singer.
