Nature sometimes brings disasters, like tsunamis (海啸). A tsunami is a big wave (浪) caused by an earthquake or a volcano under the sea. When a tsunami might come, people get a warning, which is very important. Sensors under the sea can find unusual movements and quickly tell the right departments (部门). These departments then send warnings through radio, TV and mobile phone messages.
In 2004, there was a big tsunami near the Indian Ocean. Some places didn’t get a warning, and many people couldn’t escape. But if people had got the warning, they could have evacuated to safe high places.
After a tsunami, people in the affected (受影响的) areas have many problems. First, it’s important to make sure everyone is safe. Rescue teams look for survivors (幸存者) in the ruins. Then, providing clean water, food and shelter is very important. Slowly, people start to rebuild their homes and businesses. It takes a long time, but with the help of the government and international aid, they can eventually (最终) return to a normal life.
4.What is the most likely meaning of the underlined word “evacuated” in Paragraph 2?
A.Stayed.
B.Hid.
C.Moved.
D.Fought.
5.What is the main topic of this article?

6.Which of the following happens first in responding (响应) to a tsunami disaster?

From May to November, six beach houses have fallen down in North Carolina’s Outer Banks—a troubling sign of how erosion (侵蚀) continues to put a toll on the state’s coastal villages.
The most recent collapse (倒塌) happened between last Thursday and Friday after a storm caused powerful waves along Rodanthe. The house was empty, and officials have been in contact with the house owner. Less than a mile away, three other homes had fallen down in September. Since 2020, a total of 11 houses in the area have been washed away into the ocean.
Cape Hatteras National Seashore said strong winds, large waves, as well as rising sea levels—which are caused by climate change—are causing beaches on the Outer Banks to wash away. “Many buildings close to the beach in Rodanthe are either partially or fully covered with ocean water on a regular basis,” the Seashore said.
It’s a problem faced by coastal communities around the country. In North Carolina, over 750 homes along the state’s beaches are considered in danger from erosion, according to an August report released by the state’s Department of Environmental Quality and Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Erosion in these coastal villages affects tourism and destroys sea turtles’ home, and when homes fall down, it leaves ruins (废墟). The situation is expected to worsen as a result of rising sea levels and more coastal storms.
National Seashore officials have warned owners of unsafe houses to either strengthen their home’s supports or move to a safer location if possible.
7.What does the underlined phrase “put a toll on” in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Cause damage to.
B.Give way to.
C.Bring more people to.
D.Make more contributions to.
8.What might put the beach houses in danger?
A.The daily effects of winds and waves.
B.The loss of wildlife’s home.
C.The ruins of houses left on beaches.
D.The weak structure of the houses.
9.What can we know about the most recent collapse?
A.Six houses were washed away.
B.It happened because a storm hit.
C.It resulted in many people missing.
D.Police failed to contact the house owner.
10.What should be done according to the local officials?
A.Take measures to control rising sea levels.
B.Solve the problem by protecting the ecosystem.
C.Reduce the effect on tourism by clearing the ruins.
D.Strengthen the house structure or move to new places.

In early January 2025, a series of terrible wildfires broke out across California, USA. They were made worse by long drought, strong Santa Ana winds and very dry grass and trees. The flames spread fast, covering over 20,000 hectares* of forests and neighborhoods in just three days. Hundreds of houses were burned down completely, and more than 50,000 people were told to leave their homes at once to stay away from fire and harmful smoke.
Local fire stations started a big rescue work. Firefighters fought the fires day and night. They used helicopters that drop water to hit the most serious fire areas. They also used large machines to make firebreaks—clear strips of land that stop flames from spreading further. At the same time, the government set up emergency shelters with food, clean water and medical help for the people who had to leave their homes. Schools and main roads were closed for a short time, and air quality warnings were sent out to nearby cities because of the thick smoke.
Scientists said that climate change was a key reason the wildfires became worse. Higher temperatures have made the dry season in California longer by about two months. This turned trees and grass into things that burn easily. They stressed that if we do not take useful steps to cut down carbon emissions and protect nature, such bad natural disasters will happen more often in the next years.
After two weeks of hard work by firefighters and volunteers, the last big fire was finally under control by late January. People began to go back home and check the damage. Many communities worked together to help each other rebuild their homes. This disaster clearly reminds us that protecting the environment is not just a choice, but something we must do to live on.
11. Which of the following did NOT cause the 2025 California wildfires?
A. Long dry weather
B. Strong Santa Ana winds
C. Heavy winter rains
D. Very dry grass and trees
12. What is the use of firebreaks?
A. To let people run away safely
B. To stop the fire from spreading
C. To build temporary shelters
D. To help helicopters drop water better
13. Why were air quality warnings sent to nearby cities?
A. Because of the harmful smoke from the fires
B. Because of the high temperatures
C. Because of the chemicals used to put out fires
D. Because of the dust from large machines
14. According to scientists, how does climate change make wildfires worse?
A. It brings more heavy rains to put out small fires
B. It makes the dry season shorter and less things burn
C. It makes the dry season longer and trees/grass burn easily
D. It lets more firefighters join the rescue work
15. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. All people went back home by late January
B. The wildfires did no harm to the communities
C. Protecting the environment is necessary for us to live
D. Rebuilding homes will take less than two weeks

Two weeks after getting out of the caves, the judge told Tom, “Nobody will get lost in those caves again. I’ve closed the caves with big metal doors and three locks.”
Tom turned as white as a piece of paper. “Oh, Judge, Indian Joe’s in the caves!” As a result, Indian Joe lay dead on the floor. Tom finally felt safe.
The next day Tom and Huck talked about the money they had seen. Huck said someone else must have taken it from Indian Joe’s room in the tavern.
“Huck, I bet the money’s in the caves! Will you go there with me and get it out?”
“I will if we get in and don’t get lost.”
“That’s no problem. Just through the entrance that only I know about, we can get into the caves.”
So boys started their treasure hunt adventure. They went down the river, entered the secret hole and crawled to the far end of the tunnel. They tied their string to a rock and moved on. They soon got to the place where Tom saw Indian Joe that night. The boys went carefully over to the place. They found a small bed of blankets by a large rock but there was no money-box.
“Look, Huck. There’re footprints and some candle wax on this side of the rock, but not on the other sides. I’m sure the money is under the rock. I’m going to dig.”
Tom took out his knife, started digging and hit wood. He lifted the piece of wood and found a large hole. So they climbed inside it and found the treasure box, about $12,000, which were shared by them both.
Now Widow Douglas gave Huck a home though Huck wasn’t used to the comfortable but regular life. However, to be a member of Tom Sawyer’s Gang, Huck decided to try the new life again.
