“Every life is a boat, the dream is the boat sail.” Every child has a dream of what they want to be. When Renee Butts was little, her dream was to become a volunteer fire fighter because her father was one. Sadly, when she was 14, her beloved father died and she was never able to do volunteer work with him. However, Renee’s story didn’t end there. She was determined and never gave up, which makes for a good firefighter.
Now Renee is a member of the Carmel Fire Department, where she is required to be an Emergency Medical Technician. She should also be ready to deal with any emergency, like fighting a fire, dealing with a car accident or helping someone who’s sick. Sometimes she is in the driver’s seat or using the water pump. Renee works nine to eleven days a month on 24-hour shifts. She also has a family to care for, as her husband is also a busy fire fighter. Dealing with housework and working so much can show her great determination.
When I asked Renee what the best part of her job was, she replied, “Helping people and saving lives.” I think that shows signs of being a true hero. She’s always willing to do anything for anyone in need. Renee says that her job is frightening at times, but extremely exciting. “The worst part of my job is that I see death. Actually, sometimes people die in the accident, for which I am very sorry.” With 140 people in her station, Renee is one of the only three women, but that doesn’t bother her. She says everyone can get a fair shot and do the same jobs.
I was inspired by this because I knew I would be very scared to do her job and didn’t know if I could handle seeing people die. We would never live without people like her who have the courage to risk their lives. Renee’s determination rubs off on me and makes me believe that I can do anything.
4. What happened to Renee when she was fourteen?
A. She got lost in a boat sailing. B. She dropped out of school.
C. Her father passed away. D. Her dream to be a firefighter came true.
5. Why does the author believe Renee Butts is a true hero?
A. She always tries her best to help anyone in need. B. She is one of the only three women in her station.
C. She has been a firefighter for a long time. D. She feels sorry for the people dying in the accident.
6. How does Renee think of her job?
A. Simple and pleasant. B. Frightening but exciting.
C. Relaxing and comfortable. D. Challenging but promising.
7. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. Renee’s story is an inspiration to the author. B. The author feels very scared to do Renee’s job.
C. The author could handle seeing people die. D. Renee encourages the author to risk the life.
C 5. A 6. B 7. A

根据最后一段“I was inspired by this because I knew I would be very scared to do her job and didn’t know if I could handle seeing people die. We would never live without people like her who have the courage to risk their lives. Renee’s determination rubs off on me and makes me believe that I can do anything.(我受到了鼓舞,因为我知道我会非常害怕做她的工作,也不知道我是否能忍受看到人们死去。我们的生活中不会没有像她这样敢于冒生命危险的人。蕾妮的决心影响了我,让我相信我能做任何事)”可知,本段主要讲述的是Renee的故事对作者的启发和鼓舞。故选A。
C
Understanding a proof in a math textbook is one thing; being able to reconstruct it without help is another thing. My classmates and I learned this the hard way at university. Most of our exams were oral exams, and nothing exposes a lack of deep knowledge faster than trying to explain a concept to someone.
Unlike written exams, where visual learners may be able to parrot back memorized notes that they barely understand, an oral test demands creative thinking in real time. When presented with a problem, students not only need to recall relevant definitions and theories, but they also need to apply them-sometimes in ways they never anticipated.
Students often fall into a familiar trap. They read the textbooks, highlight key passages, and review lecture notes. These activities feel productive, but when exam day arrives, a student will often realize their passive familiarity with the material doesn’t translate into the ability to apply it. Nor does it translate into a good grade. Passive learning is misleading. It feels like we’re making progress, but without actually applying what we learn, it slips away quickly.
Consuming information is not the same as developing skills. The cognitive psychologist Daniel T. Willingham explains the distinction between passive and active learning when he writes, “Memory is the result of thought.” In other words, we forget most of what we encounter and remember only what we think about. Reading about calculations doesn’t automatically create the neural pathways needed to solve calculating problems. Those pathways only form through deliberate practice: by solving problems, making mistakes, and experiencing the struggle.
As a general rule, the harder your brain works during practice, the better it performs when it matters. To truly master something, you should embrace challenges and accept the slow, often frustrating, pace of true learning. The oral math exam was valuable because it broke the illusion of passive learning. Standing in front of the professor, faced with a problem, there’s nowhere to hide. The pressure to produce mathematics revealed the true state of our understanding. To truly know what we don’t know, we should simulate our own oral exams by picturing an imaginary professor asking questions and forcing ourselves to figure out answers on our own.
8. What does the underlined phrase “parrot back” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Repeat mechanically. B. Appreciate deeply.
C. Apply creatively. D. Forget quickly.
9. Why do students fall into the learning trap?
A. Because of over-reliance on textbooks.
B. Because of brilliant exam performance.
C. Because of a false sense of competence.
D. Because of overemphasis on memory skills.
10. Which of the following statements might Daniel T. Willingham agree with?
A. Repeated exposure strengthens memories.
B. Active engagement builds solid memory.
C. Memory improves with extensive reading.
D. Learning occurs when teachers ask questions.
11. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Passive Learning: The Silent Killer of Exams
B. Conscious Practice: The Best Way to Learn Math
C. Oral Math Exams: The Frustrating University Tests
D. Active Learning: The Key to Mastering Knowledge
A 9. C 10. B 11. D
根据第二段中的“Unlike written exams, where visual learners may be able to parrot back memorized notes that they barely understand, an oral test demands creative thinking in real time.(与笔试不同,视觉学习者在笔试中可能会对自己几乎不理解的背诵笔记进行parrot back,而口试则需要实时的创造性思维。)” 故选A项。
根据第三段中的“These activities feel productive, but when exam day arrives, a student will often realize their passive familiarity with the material doesn’t translate into the ability to apply it. Nor does it translate into a good grade. Passive learning is misleading. It feels like we’re making progress, but without actually applying what we learn, it slips away quickly.(这些活动让人感觉很有成效,但当考试日到来时,学生往往会意识到,他们对材料的被动熟悉并不能转化为应用能力,也不能转化为好成绩。被动学习具有误导性。感觉我们在进步,但如果不实际应用所学,知识很快就会溜走。)”可知,学生陷入学习陷阱是因为被动学习带来了虚假的能力感,让他们误以为自己掌握了知识。故选C项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“The cognitive psychologist Daniel T. Willingham explains the distinction between passive and active learning when he writes, “Memory is the result of thought.” In other words, we forget most of what we encounter and remember only what we think about.(认知心理学家丹尼尔·T·威林厄姆在解释被动学习和主动学习的区别时写道:“记忆是思考的结果。”

Artificial intelligence (AI) is playing an increasingly important role in the restoration of Dunhuang murals (壁画). Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes, located in Gansu Province, are home to more than 45,000 square meters of murals, some of which date back over 1,600 years. However, these precious artworks are facing threats from natural aging, climate change, and human activities.
A team of researchers from Tsinghua University has developed an AI-based system to assist in mural restoration. The system first uses high-resolution cameras to capture detailed images of the murals. Then, AI algorithms analyze the images to identify damaged areas, such as cracks, fading, and peeling. “AI can quickly and accurately detect even the smallest damages that are difficult for human eyes to spot,” said Professor Chen, the leader of the research team.
After identifying the damaged areas, the AI system provides restoration suggestions based on historical data and the style of the murals. For example, if a color has faded, the AI can recommend the most appropriate color to match the original. The system also helps restorers simulate the restoration effect before actual work begins, which reduces the risk of mistakes.
“The AI system has greatly improved the efficiency and accuracy of mural restoration,” Professor Chen said. “What used to take restorers months to complete can now be done in a few weeks with the help of AI.” However, Professor Chen also pointed out that AI is only an assistant tool. “Human restorers still play a crucial role in making final decisions, as restoration requires not only technical skills but also a deep understanding of the cultural and historical background of the murals.”
Some experts are concerned about the over-reliance on AI in cultural heritage restoration. “We should not let AI replace human judgment,” said Dr. Li, a cultural heritage expert. “The value of cultural heritage lies not only in its appearance but also in the human emotions and craftsmanship behind it.”
12. What is the main threat to Dunhuang murals mentioned in the text?
A. Lack of research funds. B. Insufficient restoration technology.
C. Natural aging and human activities. D. Lack of professional restorers.
13. What is the first step of the AI-based restoration system?
A. Analyzing the damaged areas. B. Capturing detailed images of the murals.
C. Providing restoration suggestions. D. Simulating the restoration effect.
14. Why is human involvement still crucial in mural restoration?
A. AI cannot detect small damages.
B. AI is too expensive to use widely.
C. Restoration requires cultural and historical understanding.
D. Human restorers work faster than AI.
15. What is Dr. Li’s attitude towards the use of AI in mural restoration?
A. Fully supportive. B. Strongly opposed. C. Cautious. D. Indifferent.
C 13. B 14. C 15. C

How to Remember What You Read
Reading is important, but the next important step is to make sure that you remember what you’ve read! Memory is sometimes a tricky thing.
You may have just read the text, but the ideas, concepts and images may fly right out of your head. ___16___
Are you confused?
If the plot, character, or word usage is confusing for you, you likely won’t be able to remember what you read. ___17___ If you don’t understand what you’re reading, how would you remember it? There are a few things you can do — use a dictionary; look up the difficult words; consult a teacher...
Are you connected?
Does a character remind you of a friend? Does the setting make you want to visit the place? Does the book inspire you and make you want to read more? With some books, you may feel a connection right away. ___18___ How willing are you to make the connections happen?
Read it; hear it; be it!
Read the lines. Then, speak them out loud. And, put some characters into the words. When he was writing his novels, Charles Dickens would act out the stories of the characters. He’d make faces in the mirror and change his voice for each character. ___19___
How often do you read? If you read frequently, you’ll likely have an easier time remembering what you’re reading and what you’ve read. ___20___ As you make reading a regular part of your life, you’ll make more connections, stay more focused and understand the text much better. You’ll learn to enjoy literature as you remember what you read!
A. What’s your motivation?
B. Practice makes perfect.
C. It’s a bit like reading a foreign language.
D. Marking helps you remember what you read.
E. Here are a few tips for remembering what you read.
F. But other books require a bit more work on your part.
G. You can do the same thing when you are reading the text!
E 17. C 18. F 19. G 20. B

I was an angry teenager in my first year of college. My anger was focused - I was annoyed by my father’s direction and correction.
One day I had a serious fight with my father. I saw him as controlling me and wanted to break free. He saw me as rebellious (叛逆的) and tried to exercise his authority. We both exploded in shouts. I stormed out of the house and took my bus to school, my mind racing with angry thoughts about my father.
As I ran toward the classroom, suddenly I realized I didn’t have the assignment that was due: a thought card. This class was taught by Dr. Sidney Simon, who required that every Tuesday we bring in a card with our name and the date on it. As for what’s on the rest of the card, that’s up to us. We could write a thought, a feeling, a question or just plain anything and he would return the cards to us every Wednesday. Dr. Simon took the cards seriously, challenging us to think, and to think deeply.
Just outside the classroom, I took a card from my notebook. Desperate (急切的) for something to write, I could only think about the fight I’d just had with my dad. “I am the son of an idiot (白痴)!” I wrote and then rushed into the room. I handed my card to Dr. Simon and took my seat. The moment I sat down, I panicked. What had I done? Oh, no! I didn’t mean to let that out.
The next day in class, Dr. Simon began giving back the cards. I got mine with trembling hands. “What does the ‘son of an idiot’ do with the rest of his life?” it read. This simple question hit me like a ton of bricks. I had spent a lot of time hanging out in the student union cafeteria talking with other young men about the problems we had because of our parents. No one challenged anyone to take responsibility for themselves. We thought it was all our parents’ fault.
Dr. Simon’s question got right to the heart of the issue: Whose problem is it?
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I didn’t go to the student union that day and went straight home.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Dr. Simon’s question got right to the heart of the issue: Whose problem is it? At first, I felt defensive, still wrapped up in my anger towards my controlling father. But gradually, I began to see things differently. I realized that I had created a life in which I was not a central figure! Dr. Simon’s question challenged me to confront my own responsibility in the situation. It wasn’t about how terrible my father was or how much control he had over me; it was about what I would make of myself despite, or perhaps because of, my circumstances. Suddenly, my righteous anger toward my father and the blame game in the student union cafeteria felt shallow and childish.
I didn’t go to the student union that day and went straight home. My father was sitting in the living room. The atmosphere was tense, the earlier conflict hanging in the air. After hesitating for a moment, I took a deep breath, sat down across from my father and began to speak, calmly. Instead of controlling, I saw him as concerned and caring. Surprisingly, there were no shouts or angry words throughout the conversation. Gradually, I noticed a shift not only in our relationship but also within myself. I went from constant anger to become someone who was energized, excited, purposeful and even joyful. And it all started with a simple question.

C Providing restoration suggestions. D. Simulating the restoration effect.
14. Why is human involvement still crucial in mural restoration?
A. AI cannot detect small damages.
B. AI is too expensive to use widely.
