This year’s Winter Olympics are being held in Italy. For the first time ever, the Olympics have two official host cities: Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo. Cortina, which is in the mountains near Austria, is an Italian town famous for its skiing. In fact, the 1956 Winter Olympics were held in Cortina.
But this year’s events aren’t just spread between the two main locations. Events are being held in places all across Italy’s northeast. Some people have described it as the most spread out Olympics ever. Most ice events will be held in Milan, while skiing and other kinds of events will be held in other places.
Last Friday, opening events took place in four different cities. The theme was peace and harmony. The main event was held at a stadium in Milan. Highlights were songs sung by pop star Mariah Carey and an Italian opera star called Andrea Bocelli. There were also many other performances by well-known Italians.
Roughly 2,900 athletes from over 90 countries are taking part in the games. They are competing for medals in 116 different events, all focused around snow, ice, and winter activities.
A number of sports, like alpine skiing, bobsleigh, and luge are downhill races over snow or ice. Many sports focus on speed. Others, like figure skating or freestyle snowboarding focus on the abilities and artistic talent of the athletes. There are also team sports like hockey and curling.
This year there’s even a new sport, called skimo, or ski mountaineering. In skimo, athletes ski uphill, then take their skis off to climb up even farther. Finally, after skiing up a little more, they ski downhill, racing to the finish line.

今年还新增了一项名为skimo(滑雪登山)的运动。

People all over the world watch the Olympic Games on TV, cheer on their nations’ athletes, and get into the spirit of friendly international competition. Yet how many people know how these games came about and why they were created? Who came up with the idea of an Olympic torch (火炬)? Looking back in time can answer those questions.
The first Olympic Games in recorded history took place in 776 BC on the ancient plains of Olympia in southern Greece. These ancient games took place in a religious festival and were devoted to the Olympian gods. They continued for almost twelve centuries until Emperor Theodosius banned them in AD 393.
It was about 1,500 years after the last Olympics that the ancient games were revived (复兴). Baron Pierre de Coubertin, a Frenchman devoted to the promotion of physical education, was inspired to create a modern Olympic Games after he visited the ancient Olympic site.
The first modern Olympic Games took place in Athens, Greece, in 1896, and were attended by 280 athletes from 12 countries, who competed in 43 events. In 2004, the Olympic Games returned to Greece with nearly 11,000 athletes representing 201 countries.
The first opening ceremony (仪式) was at the London Olympics in 1908. The Olympic torch was lit for the first time at the opening ceremony of the 1936 Games in Germany. The ancient Greeks had a ritual fire for their games, but the idea of lighting a torch in Olympia and relaying it to the site of the games actually belongs to Carl Diem, who was the chief organizer of the Berlin Games.
The games were cancelled three times due to global conflicts. They were not held in 1916 during World War I and in 1940 and 1944 during World War II. The games have continued uninterrupted since 1948. A minor change did take place in 1994 when the timing of the Summer and Winter Olympic Games was changed so that they would not be held in the same year.

Passage 3
Sports tourism refers to tourism involving participation in or watching sports events and staying in an environment different from the usual tourist hotels or resorts. The origin of sports tourism can be traced back to Ancient Greece, where people traveled to Olympia to watch or take part in Olympic competitions. 1
But sports tourism is new and has not drawn enough attention in China. 2 However, given that Chinese authorities attach great importance to people’s health, sports tourism, in many ways, can meet people’s demand for both leisure and physical activity while facilitating consumption upgrading (that is, the growing demand for high quality, higher priced goods and services) and development of the tourism industry.
3 In fact, many local governments have already stimulated consumption potential by introducing various products and services to combine sports and tourism. 4 For example, according to Mafengwo, a travel service and social networking platform, sports-related tourism content in Beijing and Zhangjiakou, Hebei Province, increased 145 percent year-on-year, with the number of such tourists rising by 600 percent in Zhangjiakou thanks to the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.
The success of the Beijing Winter Olympics in promoting winter sports has led to the dramatic increase in the demand for sports tourism and the gradual but steady integration (融合) of sports and tourism. 5 And this in return will lead to deeper cooperation between the tourism and cultural departments, and help them realize high-quality development in this country.
A.That has really worked.
B.It is highly developed in China.
C.Sports tourism benefits physically and financially.
D.There is also a lack of research to assess its true potential.
E.Modern sports tourism, on the other hand, started in the 1990s.
F.Sports tourism is now the fastest growing part of the tourism industry in China.
G.Chinese government therefore has taken some measures to boost sports tourism.
