Light rain continued to fall as I arrived at the mountain village. With a heavy bag on my back, I was excited to teach at a small school here, but a little 1 . What would these students be like?
The school had only 18 students. Most were quiet, 2 they ran and laughed at break. One girl, Wen, always sat alone in the corner, seldom saying anything. On my first day in the classroom, I shared with them a 3 with the words “You are seen” on it and put it up on the wall. Some smiled shyly and some spoke quietly. “That’s why I’m here,” I said. However, Wen didn’t 4 . She was just drawing circles on the desk with her finger.
Days passed quickly. The lessons were 5 planned. The children were kind. But my effort seemed to make little difference. I was not sure if I was doing anything 6 .
One night, a heavy storm caused a power cut, leaving the classroom in darkness. As everyone was frozen, a soft light appeared. It was Wen who was holding a 7 in her hand. “We can still read.” she whispered. That was the first time I heard her voice.
The next day, she sat 8 . In the following days, she began to talk more. In my last class, she came up and gave me the lantern. “So you will always have some 9 ,” she smiled gently.
I came to give light, but found it was quietly 10 . Volunteering isn’t always loud or big. Sometimes, it’s a quiet lantern—shared between the two, and shining in both directions.

Imagine you are in a boat far out at sea. Suddenly, you hear a loud, deep, and beautiful song. Just as you are starting to enjoy it, the song ends, Then, it 1 again. Who is out there making such music?
It sounds like the music that people make. 2 this music is actually (实际上) made by some species of whale. According to scientist, some whales 3 their feelings of loneliness through these songs. They may even sing the songs to show their 4 over the loss of a love done.
Each of these whale songs can last from a few minutes to half an hour, and it is then 5 . The singing can go on for hours, or even days. It is very loud, and can be heard over great distances. What is more 6 is that whales from the same social group sing the same song at the same time even when they are very far apart (相隔). On the other hand, whales that belong to different social groups sing different song even when they are 7 . The music may change overtime, but whales belonging to the same group. 8 sing the same songs. Research shows that this helps the whales to communicate important information to one another within the group.
Although scientists have been studying whale songs for a long time, they continue to 9 why whales sing. They haven’t found out the complex meanings of these songs. But maybe this is not a bad thing, for the 10 of nature often lies in its mystery. And the mystery could be part of the reason why the song sounds so beautiful to the human ear.

Why Learn Languages in the Age of AI?
On holiday, many will find themselves in foreign lands. Things are often different and new to them, 276 the language. In the past, they might have carried a dictionary with them. But nowadays more and more of them are using free translation apps not only to understand a passage but also to talk. With the conversation part on these apps, you can speak into the phone and 277 a spoken translation moments later.
Though that would always be helpful, some translation might 278 you. Take one of the best-known translation apps as an example. If we say “I’m peanut butter-free” to it, in French or Italian, the app translates it as “I’m without peanut butter.” It’s true to the words, 279 the meaning is totally wrong. The best tool may not be a translation app at all.
Then how about an AI system? Let’s try ChatGPT. Tell it “Write a message in Spanish to a waiter. I’m peanut butter-free, so I’d like some sandwiches without peanut.” It produces a 280 passage. The AI system does more than just translate. It’s more like a 281 dinner guide.
Some say that in this age of AI, people no longer need to learn a foreign language. Douglas Hobstadter, a polyglot (a man who speaks or understands many languages) 282 . He describes giving a difficult speech in Chinese. It takes a lot of work without the help of AI, but in the end, you feel a sense of 283 . Which would you be proud of, climbing to the top of Qomolangma (珠穆朗玛峰) or taking a helicopter (直升飞机) there?
As AI becomes more popular, people divide into two groups. Some go on learning languages. They want to exercise their brains, learn a lot about other cultures and 284 chat with foreign friends. Others show their 1 to the language learners. “Good for you, but that’s a bit painful for me,” they might say. What’s your opinion on this debate (讨论)? Is it still necessary to learn languages?

Do you know that there are twelve Chinese zodiac signs, each one represented by an animal? Each one of the twelve animals has its own characteristics and abilities, and each year is represented by a 1 animal. For example, 2010 was the year of the Tiger, 2 2025 was the year of the Snake. In Chinese culture, some people believe that a person’s success and personality are based on the animal of the year in which they were born.
Long ago, the Jade Emperor wanted to choose twelve animals to be his guards. So, all animals on Earth were ordered to take part in a 3 race. The first twelve animals to swim across the fast river would be the winners of the race, and therefore would have a year of the zodiac specially 4 to them.
The Rat came first because he jumped on the back of the Ox to cross the river, and then suddenly jumped down from the Ox and ran to the Emperor’s feet to win first place. As Tiger and Rabbit are both fast and competitive, they both raced to the finish line, with Tiger being 5 . Dragons are naturally eye-catching, so the Emperor immediately noticed the Dragon and said that his son could be sixth. Immediately after, Snake said Dragon was his adopted (收养的) father, so he came sixth. Then, as Horse and Goat were both 6 and kind to one another, they let each other go first, so they came seventh and eighth. The ninth animal to finish the race was Monkey, as he jumped between trees and stones to 7 the other animals after falling behind. Finally, the last three animals to finish the race were the Rooster, Dog and Pig.
Some people wonder why the cat isn’t one of the twelve Chinese zodiac animals, and many people believe that the Cat joined the Rat in jumping on the Ox’s back to cross the river, but the Rat pushed it into the 8 , so it was washed away and didn’t 9 the Emperor in time to get a ranking. No wonder cats and rats are always 10 in our daily lives.
The story is well-known in Chinese culture, and although it’s made up, it’s interesting to learn about and tell your friends and family about!
