Young Helpers in Shaoyang: Students Join in Rice-planting for Farmers
In April, hundreds of middle school students from Shaoyang took part in an exciting and meaningful activity—helping farmers with rice-planting. The activity was organized to let students understand the value of food and the hard work of farmers.
When the students arrived at the farmland (农田), they were welcomed by the farmers with warm smiles. The farmers first showed them how to plant rice seedlings (插秧) correctly. They taught the students to hold the seedlings in the right way and plant them evenly in the paddy (水田) fields. The students listened carefully and then rolled up their sleeves and trousers, ready to get their hands dirty.
At first, many students found it difficult to keep their balance in the soft mud, and some even fell down. But they didn’t give up. With the help of the farmers and their classmates, they gradually got the hang of it. They worked in groups, some were responsible for carrying the seedlings, and others planted them in the fields. Everyone was busy, and the sound of laughter and the chatter of students filled the air.
After a whole day’s hard work, the empty paddy fields were covered with green seedlings, standing neatly in the water. The students were tired but happy. They realized that every grain of rice was the result of the farmers’ hard work, and they promised to cherish food in the future.
The local government praised this activity, saying that it not only helped the farmers during the busy farming season but also educated the students in a practical way. The schools also said they would organize more such activities to let students learn from real life experiences.

B.They were attacked by insects in the fields.

28.What’s the best title for this passage?
A.The Hard Life of Farmers.
B.The Importance of Rice-planting.
C.Students’ Special Experience in Shaoyang.

Some people think that we aren’t really able to form memories before our fourth or fifth birthdays. But scientists say this is untrue. They think we form memories at a very young age. However, the memories seem to change as we get older.
Researchers in Newfoundland, Canada, interviewed 140 children aged between 4 and 13. First, they asked the children to describe their earliest memory and tell their ages. Next, they asked their parents to make sure the event actually happened. All the answers were recorded. The researchers waited for two years before they went back to the children and asked them again, “What’s your earliest memory?”
Nearly all the children were aged between 4 and 7 in the first interview. They said something very different in the second interview. However, many of the children who were between 10 and 13 at the first interview described exactly the same memory in the second interview. This seems to suggest that our memories change in the early years, but at around the age of ten, they make the things that we remember fixed.
The researchers are now looking into why children remember certain events and not others. We sometimes think that most first or early memories are about very stressful things that happened to us as children, because bad things stand out in our minds. But in this study, stressful things were only a small part of what the children said they remembered. More often, children’s early memories were happy ones. The researchers are trying to work out the reasons. We can surely look forward to more fascinating discoveries about memories in the near future.
29.Which is true about memory according to Paragraph 1?
A.Memories will not change as we get older.
B.We can form memories at a very young age.
C.We’re unable to form memories when we’re 3.
30.What does the underlined phrase “looking into” probably mean in Paragraph 4?
A.Finding out. B.Dreaming about. C.Handing in.
31.What can we infer from the passage?
A.Children are not able to form memories before their seventh birthday.
B.Children’s early memories are mostly about happy things.
C.The researchers will stop their study about memories after this experiment.
32.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Happy Earliest Memories
B.The First or Earliest Memories
C.How to Form Early Memories
D
Tree Heroes
In many parts of the world, land that was once forest has changed greatly. Some of the land has become part of cities or towns. Some forest areas have become farmland, while some other places no longer have any trees because they’ve been cut down for other reasons. This causes problems. It affects the climate, causes animals to move or die, and can cause deserts to expand.
Because so many of its forests have been cut down in the last 50 years, China needs to plant trees. Although there are still problems to solve, China’s tree-planting programmes are huge. China plants more trees than the rest of the world. Who are some of the people behind these huge numbers? Let’s find out.
In Jiangxi Province, 83-year-old Zou Lianying has been planting trees on her land for almost 20 years. She knows that planting trees is good for the environment, so at the age of 64, she sold her cows and pigs and borrowed money to open a forest farm. Her family’s forest farm has trees covering about 4 km² with more than 8 million trees. Her trees are worth around 12 million RMB, but she won’t cut down even one tree and still lives very simply. She believes the forest she is planting will be a gift to future generations.
Near Beijing, Wei Guiying and a team of helpers have planted millions of trees. They have also been working at this for more than 20 years. Now, 20 km² of hills have turned green. It hasn’t been easy for her. She has borrowed money to pay for seedlings and still owes a lot of money. This doesn’t seem to matter to her, though, as she says proudly that she’s not a millionaire, but she has millions of trees.
A lot of work is still needed to prevent deserts from getting larger and to stop the climate from getting warmer, but if more of us can be like these tree heroes, it will certainly make life better for everyone.
33.In Paragraph 3, how does the writer develop Zou Lianying’s achievements?
A.By listing numbers B.By giving pictures. C.By asking questions.
34.What’s the structure of the passage?
A. B. C.
35.The passage is mainly a ________.
A.report B.letter C.story
36.By writing this passage, the writer mainly wants ________.
A.to call on people to plant trees like tree heroes and protect the environment
B.to introduce China’s tree-planting programmes
C.to explain the importance of animals

The first World Humanoid Robot (人形机器人) Games happened from August 14 to 17 in Beijing. There were 280 teams from 16 countries and regions. They took part in 26 events. These games tested how well robots can “feel”, “think” and move. One exciting part was the 5-on-5 soccer games. 37
What can humanoid robots do?
Humanoid robots are already doing many everyday jobs, like saying hello to people in restaurants. In one game, robots had to sort medicines. 38 It is already helping to find people the right medicines in a smart pharmacy (药房) in Beijing. By the end of 2025,100 pharmacies across China will use this kind of robot.
Is it easy to make humanoid robots?
No, it isn’t. Standing up and running are easy for us, but very hard for robots. They need actuators (执行器) and effectors (效应器) to do the things. 39 Effectors, like arms and legs, help robots deal with the environment. Short battery (电池) life and overheating are also problems.
Why do people make robots looking like humans?
40 However, most things around us, like doors and stairs (楼梯), are made for our size and shape. If the robot looks like us, it can use these things like we do. This way, we don’t need to make big changes to everything. That can save a lot of money and time.
A.Actuators make robots move.
B.We can make robots in different shapes.
C.One robot, called Galbot, won first place.
D.Some of them are new products made in China.

四、阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,计10分)
阅读下面短文,完成短文后的问题。
Addiction (瘾) means having a very strong interest in something. While some addictions, like sports, can be good, others—such as Internet addiction—can be harmful. Today, many teens have an Internet addiction. According to a survey in 2024, some teenagers even spent over 8 hours online a day during the summer vacation. And another survey shows that over 20% of teenagers feel they highly depend on the Internet.
Internet addiction may cause many problems. Spending hours online makes you have no time for homework. You might do your work too fast or forget to finish it. Slowly, schoolwork becomes harder. Internet addiction also leads to more family fights and makes parents feel hurt and worried. Finally, looking at screens too long hurts your eyes and gives you headaches. Some teenagers may feel nervous or lonely when they’re offline.
Do you have an Internet addiction, too? Don’t worry! Here are some tips to help you overcome it.
Control your Internet use. Use a timer to remind yourself. Allow yourself at most 1 hour of screen time online daily.
Change your habits. Try to fill your day with other fun activities instead of using the Internet. Staying busy helps break the habit of using the Internet. For example, try listening to music or playing sports.
Check Yourself!
If you agree with most of the description below, it may be time to change.
□I think about being online very often.
□I need to be online longer and longer each time before I feel satisfied.
□I have tried to control or stop my Internet use, but have failed.
□Being online helps me to forget about my problems.
□I pay less attention to people around me.
Use reminder cards. Using a card, write down messages for yourself and place it where you can see it. For example, “Playing games is taking away time I could spend with friends” or “I won’t take my phone to bed tonight.”
In short, the Internet is a tool, not a life. Try to connect with the real-life world. Then you’ll rediscover the fun of life, stronger relationships, and a healthier YOU.
61.According to the chart, how long did most teenagers use the Internet during the summer vacation?
62.How can Internet addiction influence teenagers’ health?
63.Why should we fill our day with fun activities?
64.Where could a reminder card be put?
65.Please check the descriptions in the box. Do you have an Internet addiction? How can you make good use of the Internet?

Hello, everyone. I’m Bob. I’d like to say something about my cousin Tom. You won’t believe your eyes when you see Tom! He has changed a lot. He used to be really quiet and was always silent in class. The last time I saw him was only two years ago when he was in Grade 8. He was much shorter than me at that time. He was so shy when he saw me. He did not say much but he smiled a lot.
Now Tom is taller than me. He is in senior high school. His favorite subject is history. He likes reading books about history. He is not shy any more. Instead, he is brave enough to ask questions in class. If you stay with him, he must tell you many interesting history stories. He is working very hard at all subjects, because he wants to go to Beijing University. He wants to be a historian when he grows up. But his parents want him to be a doctor. He thinks teenagers should be allowed to make their own decisions.

【答案】
61.Most teenagers used the Internet for 1-3 hours during the summer vacation.
62.Looking at screens too long hurts teenagers' eyes and gives them headaches. Some may feel nervous or lonely when they're offline.
63.Because staying busy helps break the habit of using the Internet.
64.A reminder card could be put where you can see it.
65.Yes, I have an Internet addiction. I often think about being online and find it hard to control my online time. Recently, our English study group did a survey on our classmates’ breakfast habits and we found some problems.
Some students have wrong breakfast ideas. For example, Lily only has vegetables to lose weight instead of a balanced meal, so she lacks energy and can’t focus in class well. Andy likes youtiao and hamburgers, which are high in fat and bad for his health. Some students like Peter can’t manage time well and don’t have enough time for breakfast, making it hard to concentrate in class.
In a word, good breakfast habits matter much. We need healthy breakfast food and to get up early for breakfast. Remember, it’s never too late to change bad habits!
