第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
No matter where you live, giving gifts is a common way for us to express thanks, concern or love. Although the reasons for giving gifts are about the same around the world, the traditions of giving gifts can be quite different from one another.
In Europe, don’t accidentally cut yourself out of someone’s life.
In the US, a set of kitchen knives seems like the perfect gift idea for a wedding or holiday. However, in certain European countries like Germany, superstition (迷信) defines that a knife presented as a gift will end your friendship. There is a way to beat this superstition: tie a penny to the knife or gift box. The receiver then returns the penny to you as a “payment” to drive away the bad luck.
In Native America, your host gives gifts rather than receives them.
The Native American gift giving custom is exactly the opposite to that of any other culture. Traditionally, during weddings and some big celebrations (birthdays aren’t included), guests are the receivers of gifts rather than the host.
In Japan, presentation is paramount.
The Japanese place great emphasis on the act of gift giving, and presentation plays a big role in determining how your gift is received. For example, it’s considered unpleasant to receive uncovered cash. So whether you’ re sending money as a gift or just leaving a tip, place your money in an envelope to ensure it’s received in a respectful manner.
In China, red envelopes and even denominations (面额) bring good luck.
Chinese New Year has a rich set of traditions. One of the most popular customs of this holiday is giving out money in red envelopes. Known as yasuiqian, these gifts are meant to bring good luck. In addition to how you give money, there’s also superstition relating to the amount you give. Giving an odd numbered amount of money is considered bad luck. It’s important to make sure that even the first digit is even as numbers like 30 and 50 are considered odd.
1. Which way of gift giving is acceptable based on the text?
A. Giving a knife with a penny tied as a gift in Germany.
B. Sending uncovered cash to a friend as a gift in Japan.
C. Receiving gifts from a Native American host at his birthday party.
D. Giving three hundred yuan to a Chinese child during the New Year.
2. Where will you probably receive a gift when attending a wedding?
A. In Europe. B. In Native America. C. In Japan. D. In China.
3. What cultural belief influences Chinese gift-giving practices?
A. The respect for elders. B. The pursuit of good fortune.
C. The importance of family. D. The emphasis on social harmony.
B
I decided at 10 that I was going to be a teacher because I had a burning desire for superpowers. As a boy, I could clearly see some of my teachers had extraordinary powers.
There was an English teacher in fifth grade who could magically transport us to different worlds every day by telling us stories and reading to us from books we would never pick up. This was our secret and fun time because fifth graders were considered too old to have stories read out to them.
It was even shocking that my teacher could see the invisible. I was one of those who lacked insight. Yet my teacher would notice me and the unspoken message in her eyes suggested that she could see me through. She had another superpower and even after four decades, I could still vividly remember her lessons about the great masters of art and great geographers, expanding our horizons. She did this even though her major was not art, nor geography. Her lessons went beyond the textbook. I knew I wanted to be one of those all-seeing ones with superpowers that made children feel safe and valued.
I know being a teacher isn’t the easiest or the most financially rewarding of jobs. And there are occupational risks — your knees can become worn out from years of carrying piles of notebooks up and down the school staircase and your voice can give in from too much talking. But despite all that, there are those choosing this cause. To them, teaching is not just a job — it is a science, an art and a craft, and it demands emotional labour and investment.
All my life, for three decades now, I’ve gone to work early each day with a spring in my step. Occasionally, I meet my former students. Their obvious love for me and fond memories of our time together are my rewards. When I meet others who are thirsty for superpowers, like the brand new teacher struggling to perfect her skills with a brave face on, or the one in a remote, rural school travelling 70 kilometers each day just for his pupils, I feel proud to belong to the same group.
4. What can be inferred about the stories from paragraph 2?
A. They were told in a magic way.
B. They were written by the teacher.
C. They left the students with happy memories.
D. They contained some students’ fun secrets.
5. Which of the following best describes the English teacher?
A. Ambitious and generous. B. Caring and modest.
C. Knowledgeable and observant. D. Determined and wealthy.
6. What does the author mainly imply about teaching?
A. It requires multiple subjects. B. It’s a physically demanding job.
C. It is a well-paid profession. D. It involves heartfelt commitment.
7. What is the author’s main purpose in writing?
A. To share personal career stories.
B. To reveal teaching’s profound value.
C. To encourage more people to teach.
D. To illustrate teaching’s difficulties.

Banff National Park is Canada’s firstborn national park and was recognized in 1885. Located in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta, Banff includes 6,641 square kilometers of glaciers and ice fields, thick forests, and alpine (高山的) scenery. The Icefields Park-way spreads from Lake Louise, connecting to Jasper National Park in the north. Provincial forests and Yoho National Park are neighbors to the west while Kootenay National Park is situated to the south. The main commercial center of the park is the town of Banff, in the Bow River valley.
The Canadian Pacific Railway was contributory in Banff’s early years, building the Banff Springs Hotel and Chateau Lake Louise hotel in the park and attracting tourists through widespread advertising. In the early 20th century, roads were built in Banff, at times by prisoners of World War I, and through Great Depression-era public works projects. As Banff has over three million visitors annually, the health of its ecology has been endangered. In the mid-1990s, Parks Canada launched a two-year study to preserve ecological integrity.
Banff National Park has a subarctic climate with three ecoregions. The forests feature pine trees at lower heights and Engelmann spruce at higher ones below the tree line, above which are chiefly rocks and ice. Mammal species such as the grizzly bear, cougar, wolverine, moose and bighorn sheep are found along with hundreds of bird species. Reptiles (爬行动物) are also found but only a restricted number of species have been recorded.
The mountains were formed from sedimentary rocks (沉积岩) which were pushed east over newer rock formations, between 80 and 55 million years ago. Over the previous few million years, glaciers have at times covered most of the park, but today are found only on the mountainsides though they include the Columbia Icefield, the largest continuous glacial mass in the Rockies. Being washed and crashed by water and ice has molded the mountains into their current appearance.
8. What can we infer about Banff National Park?
A. It was built mainly by prisoners.
B. It is connected to three provincial parks.
C. It is the oldest national park in Canada.
D. It failed to meet visitors’ commercial needs.
9. What was a contribution of the Canadian Pacific Railway?
A. Building roads in Banff. B. Preserving the ecology of Banff.
C. Constructing hotels in Banff. D. Providing multiple railways to Banff.
10. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The limited knowledge of reptiles. B. The biodiversity of Banff.
C. The region’s severe living conditions. D. The complex climate system of Banff.
11. What does the underlined word “molded” most probably mean?
A. Stuck. B. Broken. C. Followed. D. Shaped.
D
When it comes to architectural skills, humans like to underestimate the astonishing achievements of social insects: spiders weave amazing webs, which build unbelievable skills. The true master builders, however, are: stingless bees (无刺蜂) which build hives inside tree trunks.
Now a group of biologists led by Viviana Di Pietro at KU Leuven, in Belgium, reports that, like humans, these tiny-brained creatures are capable of constructing according to different building traditions which are then handed down over generations. The finding, published in Current Biology, is the clearest display yet of cultural differences spontaneously (自发) appearing in insects. Insect culture would once have been thought impossible.
To collect their data, Ms Di Pietro and her colleagues observed more than 400 groups of the stingless bee species in Brazil in 2022 and 2023. Around 95% of the groups built combs in horizontal layers, while the rest adopted a spiral (螺旋的) structure. In both cases the tradition was maintained over many generations of worker bees. Capturing the insects’ behaviour on video, the team established that there was no difference in average cell-building rate between the two styles and hence no efficiency advantage to either.
In order to rule out a genetic explanation for the different styles, researchers transplanted workers between groups with different building styles, having first emptied combs built before. It turned out that the imported workers soon switched to the new style, which was then maintained by the group’s own larvae (幼虫) as they eventually matured into workers.
These results have left researchers talking it over as they suggest that stingless bees can transmit different building traditions across generations without individuals needing to be instructed from their peers. This is a broader perspective about culture, which is often strictly defined as behavior directly transmitted from individual to individual until it becomes characteristic of a group.
12. What can best describe the finding by Viviana Di Pietro?
A. Questionable. B. Pioneering. C. Commonplace. D. Conventional.
13. What’s the difference between the two kinds of combs?
A. Their style. B. Their location.
C. Their building rate. D. Their maintenance.
14. Why did the researchers exchange bees between groups?
A. To test bees’ genetic difference. B. To ensure efficiency advantage.
C. To exclude genetic considerations. D. To confirm bees’ learning ability.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Cultural Diversity of Social Insects. B. Social Insects Can Create Traditions.
C. Stingless Bees’ Unique Honeycombs. D. Stingless Bees Can Preserve Cultural Traditions.

My mom is one of the least wasteful people I know. She always brings her own metal containers to buy basic foods like rice and flour. ____16____ The key is to be creative about reducing plastic and other waste — just like my mom does at home.
One effective way is to conduct a review of household rubbish. List the rubbish by room or by activity. ____17____ This examination will help you assess your waste output and identify the ways to reduce it. For example, use reusable bags if you find a lot of plastic bags piling up under your sink.
____18____ A lot of low-waste solutions might seem like they require buying special containers like silicone (硅胶) replacements for your Ziplock (带封口的) bags. But you don’t need to spend money on those items. Instead, figure out a way to repurpose the waste. Use empty cans, boxes and other food containers to store leftovers.
Reyond repurposing food containers, explore ways to save household items before throwing them away. Maybe you can mend an old pair of jeans instead of buying a new pair. Or maybe you can cut up old T-shirts into rags, which is what my mom used to do with my dad’s old T-shirts. ____19____ I don’t feel bad about getting grease (油脂) on them.
Remember: Lowering the amount of waste you create doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing pursuit. ____20____
A. You can try reusing your containers.
B. You can live a low-waste lifestyle too.
C. She used to bring reusable bags to the market.
D. You might write “used wipes and paper towels” under “nursery.”
E. I do this now too and the rags are perfect for household cleaning.
F. Find changes that work for you and you’ll be more likely to stick with them.
G. You can try sourcing your own food by growing a garden in your community.

第五部分:书面表达(20分)
【76题答案】
【答案】Dear John,
How are you doing? I’m writing to share with you an exciting event I attended last week — our school’s Science and Technology Festival.
The festival lasted for two days and featured various activities, including robot demonstrations, science experiment shows, and a VR experience zone. I was especially impressed by the student-made robots that could complete simple tasks. I even tried programming a small robot myself, which was both challenging and fun.
This event not only deepened my interest in technology but also inspired me to learn more about coding and innovation. It made me realize how technology can shape our future. I highly recommend your school hold something similar — it’s truly worthwhile! Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours,
Li Hua
