Scientists who study happiness have told us that being kind to others can result in happiness. How to be kind? You can try the following ways.
___34___
It costs nothing but means everything, especially to someone having a bad day. You can share a friendly look with a stranger on the street. This wordless signal is a universal language that can turn a boring morning bright and make people feel valued.
___35___
You don’t need to do big things to make a difference. Help a classmate carry heavy textbooks, hold the door for a teacher with armfuls of papers, or lend a hand to a neighbor moving a heavy box. These small acts will make others feel supported.
___36___
Sometimes, people just need someone to hear them. Sit quietly, look them in the eye, and pay attention to every word they say. Nod your head or say simple words like “I understand” to show you care.
___37___
Tell your deskmate his drawing is amazing, or praise a group member’s great research for a project. Real appreciation comes from the heart. It makes people feel valued and encourages them to keep doing their best. A few kind words can brighten someone’s whole day.
___38___
Your friend might forget to return your book, a classmate might bump into you by accident, or your family might break your favorite pen. Instead of getting angry, try to see things from their side. Just smile and say, “It’s okay—don’t worry about it.” It helps you keep your relationships happy and healthy.
When we show kindness to others, we not only make them happy, but also bring happiness to ourselves. Let’s be kind every day and make the world a warmer place.

Table manners are how to behave when you eat a meal. For example, how to handle cutlery (餐具) and how to eat in a polite manner. Following them will help you avoid mistakes at table.
It is “perfectly” okay to make noise when you eat noodles. But in China, avoiding the noise is necessary. Chopsticks touching the rice bowl is not only impolite, but also means having no food. It’s important to say thanks before and after a meal.
Your wrists (手腕) should be placed on the edge (边缘) of the table while eating, fork in the left hand, knife in the right. Keep your hands on the table. It is not good manners to rest them on your legs. Keep your elbows off the table. Leave some food on your plate to show that the host has given you enough to eat. Or the host will ask if you’d like to have a second helping.
In France, a meal is like a ceremony. People enjoy it and make it a special event. Unlike Russia, it’s regarded as good manners to finish everything on your plate. People often cut bread directly on a table cloth rather than on a plate. Tear your bread into small pieces before eating. Taking a bite from the whole piece is very impolite.
39. In which country is it polite to make noise while eating noodles?
A. China. B. Japan. C. Russia.
40. Where should you place your hands while eating in Russia?
A. On the table. B. On your legs. C. Off the table.
41. In Russia, why should you leave some food on your plate?
A. To show you don’t like the food.
B. To show you need a second helping.
C. To show the host has given you enough to eat.
42. In France, how should you eat bread?
A. Cut it on the plate.
B. Eat the whole piece at once.
C. Tear it into small pieces first.
43. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?
A. You can hold the fork in either hand in Russia.
B. You can leave your chopsticks touching your rice bowl in Japan.
C. In France, finishing everything on your plate is seen as polite behavior.

Tea has always been a popular drink in China. Chinese people love different kinds of tea. Among them, black tea and white tea from Fujian, green tea from Zhejiang and Anhui, and dark tea from Yunnan are some of the favorites.
In the Song Dynasty (960-1279), tea culture reached new heights. The beauty of the Song tea came alive through “dian cha”. Powdered (粉状的) tea was whisked (搅打) with water into soft “clouds”. White tea was often used to make the “clouds” as white as the moonlight. Tea artists used clean water to draw pictures on them with a teaspoon. The way of serving dian cha became a living art. It later influenced Japanese tea culture. Today, more young people are learning and passing it on.
Yunnan’s dark tea, especially Pu’er, got famous because of the Ancient Tea Horse Road. And it won popularity around the world. In 1976, Frenchman Fred Kempler found a new kind of Pu’er from Yunnan in a Hong Kong shop. In the same year, he visited Yunnan, bought nearly two tons, and began to sell “Yunnan Tuocha” in Europe. Since 1986, Yunnan’s Pu’er tuocha has got many prizes at food expos (博览会) in France, America and other countries. Today you can see an old Australian lady holding a cup of tea of sun-dried Pu’er, though she still enjoys her English-style black tea with milk and sugar. Tea is a bridge to modern times among nations and cultures.
Tea is enjoyed timelessly. From the ancient cups of dian cha, white as the moonlight, people turned tea into art, and art into eternity (永恒). Tea is also enjoyed all over the world, from the East to the West. Each cup of Pu’er, with the smell of sunshine, turns tea into friendship, and friendship into a shared future.
44. Where is black tea produced in China according to the first paragraph?
A. In Fujian. B. In Zhejiang. C. In Yunnan.
45. What influence did Song Dynasty’s “dian cha” have?
A It made white tea the most popular tea in China.
B. It became a required skill for young people today.
C. It played a role in developing Japanese tea culture.
46. When did the Frenchman begin to sell “Yunnan Tuocha” in Europe?
A. In 1279. B. In 1976. C. In 1986.
47. How did Yunnan’s Pu’er spread to Europe?
A. It was introduced by a Frenchman who found it in Hong Kong.
B. It got prizes at food expos and was noticed by European traders.
C. It was sold along the Ancient Tea Horse Road to European countries.
48. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To explain the history of “dian cha” in the Song Dynasty.
B. To introduce the different kinds of tea produced in China.
C. To show the cultural value of Chinese tea and its worldwide influence.

___50___ A teacher might praise your class notes in class, making you feel your effort is seen. Your parent could bake cookies with you on a rainy day, filling the kitchen with laughter. A classmate helps you pick up your books when they fall on the ground after school. ___51___ The restaurant worker gives you your favorite dish. As a teenager, you may think being a teenager is hard. You feel old enough to make your own decisions, but your parents don’t think so. They always think that they know what’s best for you. If you have different opinions from your parents, what should you do? Should you listen to your parents? Here is a hot discussion.
Agree
Disagree
Parents have more life experience and can offer valuable advice according to what they’ve learned.
Parents often have a better understanding of risks and dangers. By listening to them, teenagers can avoid some unnecessary mistakes and harm.
Listening to parents shows respect (尊重) and can make the parent-child relationship strong.
Teenagers should develop the decision-making ability. It is helpful for their future growth and development.
Standing up for their own views allows teenagers to better understand their own values, talents and abilities. These all help teenagers to develop self-identification (自我认同).
Teenagers need to have chances to make mistakes. From these mistakes, they can learn a lot and grow better.
Zhang Xin is a Grade 9 student from Shanxi. She took part in the discussion and shared her experiences.
I wanted to be a dancer. But my parents didn’t support my dream. “We want you to be a doctor,” they always told me. I could understand that they are doing this for my own good, but I wanted to stick to chasing my dream. I had a talk with them about my ideas one evening, and they said that they would respect my choice, and give me some helpful advice in the end.
In many cases, neither listening completely to parents nor just sticking to one’s own opinions is the best solution. Instead, communication and understanding are key to finding the best solution. Teenagers can learn to be independent while having a healthy relationship with parents.
54. Why is it hard to be teenagers?
______________________________________
55 What makes the parent-child relationship strong according to the “Agree” part?

56. What is helpful for teenagers to develop self-identification?

57. How did Zhang Xin work out the problem with her parents?

A. It made white tea the most popular tea in China.
B. It became a required skill for young people today.
C. It played a role in developing Japanese tea culture.

A. In 1279. B. In 1976. C. In 1986.

55. What makes the parent-child relationship strong according to the “Agree” part?

56. What is helpful for teenagers to develop self-identification?

【答案】54. Because they aren’t allowed to make their own decisions./Because their parents don’t allow them to make their own decisions./Because they feel old enough to make their own decisions, but their parents don’t think so.
55. Listening to parents.
56. Standing up for their own views./Understanding their own values, talents and abilities.
57. By having a talk with her parents about her ideas.
58.
I will listen to them. Because they have more life experience and can help me avoid unnecessary mistakes. Because respecting their opinions can strengthen our parent-child relationship. Because my parents, who love me most in the world, only want what’s best for me./I will stick to my own ideas. Because it’s important for me to develop my decision-making ability and independence. Because making mistakes is also a way to learn and grow. Because I need to take responsibility for my own choices. Only in this way can I learn to be confident and strong, and develop the ability to solve problems in daily life.
