The day when Sydney Barta received her prosthetic running blade (假肢跑步刀) changed her life. “It was an incredible experience,” said Barta, a senior majoring in bioengineering. “It’s so responsive and springy. I remember feeling so happy. It was one of the reasons why I wanted to run.”
Barta’s professional running career took off in her teens. She’s a two-time World Para Athletics medalist, and the first Paralympic athlete to compete for Stanford. These experiences shaped her academic path at Stanford. To fit her blade, Barta’s doctor filmed her running. Together, they watched the videos to see what her joint angles and foot strike looked like in different phases of motion. “I had to learn biomechanics,” Barta said. “As a disabled runner, I don’t have the luxury of not thinking about biomechanics.”
At age 6, Barta was finishing a fun run at the 2010 Marine Marathon when strong winds pushed over a metal scaffold (脚手架). It fell on her left ankle, making part of her leg amputated (截肢). After recovery, she returned to athletics. When she was 8, the Challenged Athletes Foundation gave her a top-of-the-line running blade. As her running career progressed, she competed, medaled, and set records worldwide. As a Stanford junior, Barta was training for the 2024 Paris Summer Paralympic Games when she broke her right foot. The injury left her unsure about her athletic future. But the next day, she learned she’d earned a spot on the Stanford track and field team.
Barta also conducts research in the Human Performance Lab. Due to her outstanding academic performance, Barta was elected president of the Stanford Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society in 2024. This year, she was awarded a BioX fellowship to continue her research.
Besides classwork, research and roughly 20 hours of athletic training each week, Barta is applying to medical school, desiring to be a surgeon. “I think my purpose in this life is to be a health advocate helping understand foot bone health in athletes,” Barta said. “Knowing biomechanics in the way I have, I’m at a unique position to help amputees with bone health.”
24. How did Barta find her prosthetic running blade?
A. Ordinary. B. Comfortable. C. Disappointing. D. Stylish.
25. Why did Barta want to learn biomechanics?
A. To help with her doctor’s research.

Growing up near Lisbon, Portugal, Marta Bernardino and Sebastião Mendonça always believed the forest would remain constant in their lives. But each year, they watched as fires destroyed the forests not far from their homes, leaving behind burnt gray hillsides. To renew these forests, the two high school students created Trovador a six — legged robot capable of planting 28% faster than humans with a 90% survival rate.
The robot can climb slopes of up to 45 degrees while detecting and avoiding big stones in its way. Trovador is also equipped to carry and plant up to 200 trees per hour. Unlike a tractor, it barely makes an indent (凹痕) on the ground thanks to its light movement, preserving space for air and water in the soil. A depth camera attached to it maps any obstacles and allows it to slightly adapt its track in real time. It also uses artificial intelligence and sensors to analyze the pH and humidity (湿度) of the soil, after which Trovador will follow a dig-place-tamp order to plant rooted trees.
Additionally, with built-in sensors, Trovador uploads real-time data like the location of each plant, soil humidity and battery life to a cloud, allowing the team to monitor the robot remotely. Moreover, during future soil analysis, the robot will be trained to skip the dry ground and guide planting to proper spots.
“Trovador can reach and reforest areas where humans have been unable to,” says Miguel Jerónimo, a landscape architect. While Jerónimo is hopeful about its success, he’s equally apprehensive about the robot’s lastingness in the actual field. “Operational endurance (耐力), mobility in thick vegetation and ease of maintenance are areas that need further exploration before the system can be considered ready for broad use,” he says. What is more, the price tag on the tool also needs taking into account, notes the landscape architect.
However, to cope, instead of selling the Trovador robot itself, the team plan to first market it as a platform that they operate as a service, selling “trees-in-the-ground”. With the robot, they hope to make reforestation that is fast, precise and scalable to millions of hectares.
28. What motivated the two teenagers to create Trovador?
A. Their fond childhood memories. B. The lower forest coverage rate.
C. Advances in artificial intelligence. D. Their desire to restore the forest.
29. What is a feature of Trovador?
A. It moves smoothly in thick plants. B. It is reliable in tough environments.
C It can detect soil conditions. D. It has a long battery life.
30. What does the underlined word “apprehensive” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Concerned. B. Curious. C. Optimistic. D. Confused.
31. How do the two teenagers plan to promote Trovador first?
A. By bringing its price down. B. By offering planting services.
C. By improving its maintenance. D. By renting it to large companies.
D 29. C 30. A 31. B

D
For years, critics argue empathy makes people care too narrowly — centering on individual stories rather than the broader needs of society — while careful reasoning enables more fair, evidence-based choices. However, our new research, published in PNAS Nexus, suggests that empathy and reasoning aren’t rivals. When they operate side by side, people tend to help in the fairest ways — not favoring some over others — but in ways that touch the most lives.
We studied two groups that regularly helped others: living organ donors who gave kidneys to strangers, and effective altruists (利他主义者) who used logic to direct a substantial part of their income toward causes that saved the most lives, such as fighting extreme poverty or preventable illness.
All participants were made to report how much they cared about and were moved by others’ suffering as well as how often they slowed down, reflected, and thought through things before deciding what to do. We also examined their altruistic judgments and behaviors, from hypothetical (假设的) choices — like deciding whether to help a close friend or a distant stranger — to real-world donations.
On average, organ donors scored higher on empathy, and effective altruists scored higher on reflective reasoning. However, people high in either trait (特性) tended to support distant others and center on helping as many people as possible. Even among organ donors, whose empathy was far above that of average adults, empathy didn’t make them biased toward those who were close or familiar. When we measured their altruistic judgments and real-world donations, they were as likely as average adults, and sometimes more likely, to favor causes that saved the greatest number of lives.
Many of today’s most urgent problems — poverty, global health — require motivating people to care about strangers and use limited resources effectively. Appeals to empathy alone may inspire giving, but not necessarily the most effective giving. Appeals to reasoning alone can leave people unmoved. The findings suggest the most powerful approach may be to pair empathy’s motivation with reasoning’s direction. Empathy reminds us that others’ suffering matters; reasoning helps lead that motivation toward where help will have the greatest impact.
32. What can be learned about the participants in the study?
A. They were frequent organ donors. B. They shared the same personality.
C. They assisted others at personal cost. D. They mainly helped close friends.
33. What did the researchers do in their study?
A. They analyzed consistent donation records.
B. They measured the participants’ two traits.
C. They tracked the participants’ daily behavior.
D. They collected the participants’ opinions on fairness.
34. What is a conclusion of the research?
A. Empathy and reasoning oppose each other.
B. Empathy alone leads to the best outcome.
C. Reasoning should always guide a good decision.
D. Combining empathy and reasoning promotes fair helping.
35 Which of the following could be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Fresh Path to Effective Altruism B. Reasoning Over Emotion in Giving
C. The Limitations of Human Empathy D. The Rising Popularity of Empathy
C 33. B 34. D 35. A

Big projects often feel like mountains that are difficult to climb up. That feeling of fear before starting a task isn’t just laziness — it’s your brain quietly overwhelmed (压垮). ____36____ This is where task snacking comes in.
What is task snacking? It’s a micro-productivity technique where you intentionally break large tasks into small, easily manageable actions, usually taking 2 — 10 minutes to complete. ____37____ Instead, you might start by researching for 5 minutes, writing down key points or writing just one paragraph. This lets you make progress without needing a large time or energy commitment.
____38____ Tiny actions can rewire your brain for productivity. When you perform a small task, your brain releases dopamine (多巴胺), which is tied to reward, motivation and learning. The increase of dopamine is your brain’s way of saying “Job well done”.
Task snacking works well for different jobs. For example, facing examinations, students can summarize a lecture after class or read one page before bed. Anyway, breaking large tasks into small actions enables consistent progress. ____39____
So, why not build your task snacking habit? You can start by breaking your next large task down into actions that feel easy. For example, “Update resume” becomes “Open resume file”, “Check job description”, and “Add one experience”. After completing a group of tasks, engage in a short positive action — drinking tea or listening to a song. ____40____ Finally, remember consistency beats intensity. Even completing just two mini-tasks per day outpaces an untouched big project.
A. The mini-task strategy is science-backed.
B. It feels impersonal, inflexible, but instantly rewarding.
C. This trains your brain to associate success with good feelings.
D. You don’t sit down to write a 3,000-word report in one session.
E. This eventually leads to better outcomes with reduced pressure.
F. Bite-sized steps make it easier to focus and memorize information.
G. But what if the solution isn’t working harder, but smarter and smaller?

根据前文“Big projects often feel like mountains that are difficult to climb up. That feeling of fear before starting a task isn’t just laziness — it’s your brain quietly overwhelmed (压垮). (大型项目常常感觉像难以攀登的高山。开始任务前的那种恐惧不仅仅是懒惰——这是你的大脑在悄悄被压垮。)”以及后文“This is where task snacking comes in. (这就是任务零食化的用武之地。)”可知,前文说明大项目带来的压力,后文引出任务零食化的解决方法,此空应提出解决方案不是更努力,而是更巧妙、更微小,G选项“But what if the solution isn’t working harder, but smarter and smaller? (但如果解决方案不是更努力,而是更巧妙、更微小呢?)”承上启下,提出疑问并引出后文的任务零食化方法,符合语境。故选G项。
【37题详解】
根据前文“What is task snacking? It’s a micro-productivity technique where you intentionally break large tasks into small, easily manageable actions, usually taking 2—10 minutes to complete. (什么是任务零食化?这是一种微效率技巧,你故意把大任务拆成小的、容易完成的行动,通常需要2到10分钟完成。)”以及后文“Instead, you might start by researching for 5 minutes, writing down key points or writing just one paragraph. (相反,你可以从5分钟的研究开始,写下要点或者只写一段话。)”可知,前文解释任务零食化是拆成小任务,后文举例说明具体的小任务做法,此空应说明不会一次性完成大任务,D选项“You don’t sit down to write a 3,000-word report in one session. (你不会坐下来一次性写完一篇3000字的报告。)”与后文的Instead形成对比,解释任务零食化的具体表现,符合语境。故选D项。
【38题详解】
根据后文“Tiny actions can rewire your brain for productivity. When you perform a small task, your brain releases dopamine (多巴胺), which is tied to reward, motivation and learning. (微小的行动可以重塑你的大脑以提高效率。当你完成一个小任务时,你的大脑会释放多巴胺,这与奖励、动力和学习有关。)”可知,后文从科学角度解释任务零食化的原理,此空应点明这种小任务策略有科学依据,A选项“The mini-task strategy is science-backed. (这种小任务策略有科学依据。)”总起本段,引出后文的科学原理解释,符合语境。故选A项。
根据前文“Anyway, breaking large tasks into small actions enables consistent progress. (无论如何,把大任务拆成小行动能够带来持续的进步。)”可知,前文说明拆分大任务的好处,此空应进一步说明其最终效果,E选项“This eventually leads to better outcomes with reduced pressure. (这最终会在减少压力的情况下带来更好的结果。)”承接前文,总结任务零食化的最终益处,符合语境。故选E项。
【40题详解】
根据前文“After completing a group of tasks, engage in a short positive action — drinking tea or listening to a song. (完成一组任务后,进行一个简短的积极行动——喝茶或听一首歌。)”可知,前文建议完成小任务后进行积极奖励,此空应说明这样做的作用,C选项“This trains your brain to associate success with good feelings.

故填who/that。

故填to introduce。

That’s all. Thank you for listening.
One possible version:
Dear classmates,
Today, I’d like to discuss time management, which is crucial and challenging for us senior students.
Many of us struggle with procrastination, unbalanced study schedules and unclear priorities. As a result, we often feel stressed and inefficient.
To address these issues, I suggest making a weekly plan that identifies important tasks first. Breaking big assignments into smaller steps also helps reduce pressure. Moreover, it is advisable that phone use during study time be limited, which can improve focus. Remember, not only does good time management boost our academic performance, but it also brings us a more balanced life.
That’s all. Thank you for listening.

It was cloudy and the air felt cold. It couldn’t be more perfect for the cross-country race. When we runners were gathering at the starting line to do last-minute stretches, my coach said to me, “Remember, pace yourself and control your breathing!”
Shortly after the starting gun fired, a girl beside me fell onto the ground. Without thinking, I came to help her stand up. “Thanks!” said the girl. I replied politely and started to catch up. Running between runners, I managed to work my way up in the first 400 meters.
The first mile always passed quickly in a burst of excitement and enthusiasm. So when the second mile began, it was time for me to pay attention to my body. I consciously checked I was doing everything right, breathing through my nose and swinging my arms. The shadow of tiredness danced around, but I pushed it out of my mind.
I felt empathetic pats on my back as I was passed, and I returned the favor to those I passed. Unavoidably, however, my old friend — tiredness — was back as I neared the third and final mile. My initial excitement had completely disappeared. The runners I ran with had either pulled ahead or fallen behind. Although I refused to be among those who fell behind, my leg wouldn’t listen to me. Then I remembered my coach’s words, “Learning to pace and breathe.” I chose to adjust my breathing and push myself a little harder. As the half-mile mark was ahead, the cheering of the crowd became louder, “Good job!” “Push it!” I tried my best to control my body, telling myself, “Only a half mile is left! Believe that you can make it!” But around the next corner, my legs went weak, and my vision blurred (模糊).
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
Just as I was going to fall, a voice came behind.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When I finally sailed over that finish line, I saw my coach.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Just as I was going to fall, a voice came behind. “Keep going!” It was the girl who I helped at the starting line. She rushed over and grabbed my trembling arm to steady me, slowing her pace to match mine. “There is only half a mile!” she panted, her eyes burning with resolve. With her encouragement, I got into the right state again. Sheer desperation pushed me to break out into a sprint for the half mile. Gradually, the finish line drew nearer, and the cheers of the crowd erupted like thunder in my ears.
When I finally sailed over that finish line, I saw my coach. His eyes were filled with pride and relief. He rushed to me, giving me a firm high-five. “You did it! You overcame the tough moments,” he exclaimed. The girl who helped me also came up, smiling. “We all made it!” she said. I looked around, seeing the other runners, some still finishing. This race taught me that kindness and perseverance can turn challenges into triumphs, and I’ll carry this spirit forward in every future endeavor.

B. To design better prosthetic devices.
C. To meet her academic requirements.
D. To improve her running performance.
26. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Barta’s happy childhood. B. Barta’s positive qualities.
C. Barta’s main experiences. D. Barta’s failed efforts.
27. What does Barta’s future goal imply about her?
A. She is socially responsible. B. She will leave competitive sports.
C. She advocates for equality. D. She hopes to become a disabled coach.

C. It can detect soil conditions.
35. Which of the following could be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Fresh Path to Effective Altruism B. Reasoning Over Emotion in Giving
C. The Limitations of Human Empathy D. The Rising Popularity of Empathy
