Oliver’s journey with Tai Chi began in her early 20s, when she was suffering from a back injury, which left her lying in bed for six months.
“As an active youngster at that time, I couldn’t bear resting in bed,” she explained. “My muscles became wasted and stiff (僵直的) for lack of use, and I was often in a lot of pain. So, I felt that some physical exercise would help.”
She then discovered Tai Chi when she spotted by chance a poster advertising classes and decided to try the mysterious and exotic (异国的) sport. Oliver was immediately struck by the gentle and beautiful movements of Tai Chi, and to her delight, found that her occasional pains disappeared after years of practice.
“It not only helps me improve physical strength, but also provides me with many mental benefits, such as improved mood and focus, and less anxiety and depression,” she added.
To further understand Tai Chi and the Chinese philosophy behind it, Oliver decided to begin a journey to China. In 2005, Oliver established the Double Dragon Alliance Cultural Centre, which acts as a bridge for foreign people seeking to gain a better understanding of Chinese culture. The centre supports kung fu masters in teaching martial arts (武术) and organizes events for people to experience various aspects of Chinese culture.
Apart from her Tai Chi classes Oliver now serves as the director of the British Cultural Centre at the University of Shanghai. Reflecting on her work, Oliver said, “For quite many years, my work is actually to be like a cultural bridge. If you don’t have someone in the middle who is appreciative of all the cultures and have the desire to connect people, then it’s hard for them to get to know each other. I hope I can be the bridge to bring people close together. We need to foster mutual understanding among cultures to promote peaceful relations and friendship across the globe.”
24. Why did Oliver try Tai Chi?
A. To solve a mystery. B. To recover physical ability.
C. To treat her mental illness. D. To advance her knowledge of China.
25. How was Oliver after practising Tai Chi?
A. Her overall well-being improved. B. She became open-minded.

Imagine staying in the icy wilderness of Antarctica (南极洲), cut off from the rest of the world, with only a small group of scientists. Such a group might be expected to develop a culture of its own, but would that develop a new shared accent (口音)?
As part of the project to explain the spoken accent development, a group of researchers led by Jonathan Harrington, professor of phonetics and speech processing at the Ludwig-Maximilian University of Munich, started the study. The researchers studied a group of 11 scientists spending six months on an island just west of the Antarctic Peninsula.
The scientists were from several countries, including the US, the UK, Iceland and Germany. As part of the study, they had to record themselves reading a list of vocabularies from a computer screen every few weeks. The list included words with vowel (元音) sounds/i:/, /u:/ and /əʊ/ that have been found to change over time in different English accents.
The recordings were then sent to researchers. When the recordings were studied, the researchers found that the pronunciation of words with an /əʊ/ sound — such as “flow”, “code” and “sew” — had changed a little over the six months. The scientists began to pronounce it more toward the front of their mouths than toward the back. (British pronunciations are already typically frontier than American /əʊ/. )
The researchers believe it shows the development of a new accent among the scientists. Harrington said,“When we speak to each other, we remember that speech, and then that has an influence on our own speech production. ”
While only small changes were recorded, the researchers believe the experiment helps to explain how different accents are created among enclosed (封闭的) communities — and may help us know why American and British English have developed as they have.
28. What were the scientists expected to do during the study?
A. Tell stories. B. Show pictures.
C. Make sentences. D. Read and record words.
29. Which word’s pronunciation may change in the enclosed community in the study?
A. Egg. B. Show. C. Cup. D. Hat.
30. Which of the following do the researchers agree with concerning the finding?
A. It proves life in Antarctica is difficult.
B. It uncovers the connection of vowel sounds.
C. It may explain American and British English’s development.
D. It helps build communications among people with different accents.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Different Accents Around the World
B. The Development of English Language
C. What Would Scientists’ Daily Life Be Like in Antarctica?
D. Does a New Accent Form Among Enclosed Communities?
D
BEING an astronaut sounds cool, doesn’t it? In space, they get to do some pretty amazing things, like floating in zero gravity (重力).
However, there are also plenty of things that astronauts can’t do because of their weightless environment, and that’s very sad. What’s worse, they can’t even let their sadness show — because it’s impossible to cry in zero gravity.
Of course, astronauts can still produce tears. But crying is much more difficult in space, reported The Atlantic in January. Without gravity, tears don’t flow downward out of the eyes like they do here on Earth. This means that when you cry in space, your tears have nowhere to go — they just stick to your eyes.
In May 2011, astronaut Andrew Feustel experienced this during one of his spacewalks. “Tears,” he said, “don’t fall off of your eye...They just kind of stay there.”
Besides making your vision unclear, this can also cause physical pain. Back on Earth, tears are supposed to bring comfort to the eyes. But that’s not the case in space. The space environment dries out astronauts’ eyes, and when tears suddenly wet the eyes, it can cause pain rather than comfort.” My right eye is painful like crazy.” Feustel told his teammate during the walk.
Since gravity doesn’t work in space, astronauts need some extra help to get rid of the tears. Feustel chose to rub his eyes against his helmet to wipe the tears away. Another choice is to just wait — “When the tears get big enough, they simply break free of the eye and float around,” astronaut Ron Parise told The Atlantic.
There are lots of small things — things like crying — that we are so used to on Earth. We usually take them for granted, until they become a problem in a totally different environment, like space. There, astronauts can’t talk to each other directly. They also can’t eat or drink in normal ways. They can’t even burp (打嗝), because there is no gravity to hold the food down in their stomach. If they do burp, they just end up throwing up (呕吐) everything in their stomach, according to the UK National Space Center.
Thus, perhaps it’s only space explorers who can honestly say: “Gravity, you’re the best.”
32. From Paragraphs 2 and 3, we can know that ________.
A. astronauts are unable to feel sad in space B. astronauts produce fewer tears in space
C. tears produced in space don’t flow downward D. tears produced in space flow down more slowly
33. What effect do tears have on astronauts?
A. They cause physical pain. B. They bring comfort to them.
C. They make their vision clearer. D. They float around and cause trouble.
34. What can the astronaut do to get rid of the tears?
A. Rub his eyes against his helmet to let the tears float forward.
B. Get the tears big enough to break away from his eyes.
C. Get the tears big enough to fall off of his eyes.
D. Rub his eyes by hand to let the tears float around.
35. What’s the second-to-last paragraph mainly about?
A. Suggestions on how astronauts can stay comfortable in space.
B. Things that humans can’t do without gravity.
C. Why burping is impossible in space.
D. Other basic things that are difficult to do in space.

Creative ways to reduce food waste
When it comes to wasting food, part of this issue may arise from lifelong habits. ____36____
Now follow these tips to reduce unnecessary waste and save a pretty penny along the way.
Plan your meals and shop your fridge. When you don’t have a clear idea of what you want to eat, it’s easy to pick up more than you need, especially when items are at a discount. It might seem like a great short-term option. ____37____ Planning your meals for the week in advance can be a great way to avoid this issue.

Get creative with leftovers. Sometimes planning fails you and you end up with leftover meals in your fridge. ____39____ Try out a traditional recipe, or consider something more innovative, like making egg-fried rice, which is actually made with day-old rice.
Track your trash. Do you find that you get into the habit of buying the same things every single time you set foot in the supermarket, yet every week you have things you throw away? A good way of avoiding food waste is to note down the products which end up in the bin time and time again. ____40____
A. Keep foods in the fridge.

C. Therefore, you can avoid buying them in the future.
D. Luckily, it’s easy to learn how to change these unwise habits.

Everyone’s first job is special, because you gain useful experience that you can use in other positions in future. It also teaches you about the value of money.
When I was about sixteen years old, I wanted to buy albums of my favourite band, but I did not have any money. This was because the money my parents gave me was just enough to get by. I had to find a part-time job in order to purchase the music I wanted.
Luckily, I found that there were many old people who needed help in my neighbourhood. And I chose the oldest person I knew, Mrs. Hudson, who was over eighty years old, and could not tend her garden anymore. She had flowers, a grass lawn, and some tomato plants. I knocked on her door, trying to build up enough courage to ask her for work. She answered that indeed she needed help in her garden.
My first job was to pull out weeds. I got down on my knees and began to pull them out one by one in her front yard and backyard. Finishing this tiring and boring task, I mowed her lawn front and back. That was the first day of my job, and it took me about two hours. After that, I was paid ten dollars for my work. It was less than I thought, but at least I had earned my first money.
After getting that ten dollars, I intended to go to the supermarket to buy my favourite album. I chose a nice morning to do it because I knew it would be a memorable moment when I was able to buy what I liked through my efforts. But on the way to supermarket, I happened to see my mom “working” on the opposite side of the road. Actually, I had never seen how she worked before, I just knew she was a saleswoman.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为80左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Under the burning sun, my mom was distributing leaflets (分发传单) to passers-by, sweating all over.

Apart from her Tai Chi classes, Oliver now serves as the director of the British Cultural Centre at the University of Shanghai. Reflecting on her work, Oliver said, “For quite many years, my work is actually to be like a cultural bridge. If you don’t have someone in the middle who is appreciative of all the cultures and have the desire to connect people, then it’s hard for them to get to know each other.
【答案】28. D 29. B 30. C 31. D

【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“While only small changes were recorded, the researchers believe the experiment helps to explain how different accents are created among enclosed (封闭的) communities — and may help us know why American and British English have developed as they have.(虽然只记录到了一些细微的变化,但研究人员认为,这项实验有助于解释封闭型社区中不同口音是如何形成的——并且或许还能帮助我们理解美式英语和英式英语为何会发展成如今的样子)”可知,研究人员对这一发现所认同的观点是它或许能够解释美式英语和英式英语的发展。故选C。
【31题详解】

A. astronauts are unable to feel sad in space B. astronauts produce fewer tears in space

A. Rub his eyes against his helmet to let the tears float forward.
B. Get the tears big enough to break away from his eyes.

【答案】Under the burning sun, my mom was distributing leaflets (分发传单) to passers-by, sweating all over. Her clothes were soaked through, and strands of hair stuck to her forehead. I watched in shock as she endured the heat and the indifferent responses from some passers-by. Suddenly, the ten dollars in my pocket felt heavier. I decided not to buy the album. Instead, I went to a nearby store and bought a cold drink for my mom. When I handed it to her, she looked at me in surprise, then a big smile spread across her face. That moment, I understood the real value of money.
