“What have I gotten myself into?” I wondered as I sat through a research meeting conducted entirely in Polish, unable to even read the title on the screen. Having only basic Polish language skills, I found my experiment in cross-cultural cooperation more challenging than I had expected.
The idea of spending time abroad hadn’t occurred to me until my advisor suggested it during my first year. With his support, I enjoyed a remarkable summer in a laboratory in Japan, which left me wanting more. So, I applied for a Fulbright fellowship in Poland. To receive the fellowship, I first had to find a lab to host me, and neither I nor my advisor had any connections to Poland.
Relying on Google to translate lab websites, I began to send cold emails. When my eventual host responded, eager to collaborate, I was thrilled. I suddenly felt the possibilities for my research career were endless and global.
I was the first visiting scholar my research group had hosted from the United States, and my Polish colleagues were curious about what brought me to their country. This led to many fruitful discussions about the similarities and differences in how science is conducted across cultures. For example, much of the funding in Poland is awarded to teams rather than individuals. The system promotes cross-disciplinary (跨学科的) cooperations across the country, which in turn shapes how scientists design and carry out studies.
I learned as much about the history and culture in Central and Eastern Europe as I did scientifically. Colleagues related firsthand accounts about challenges the region faced during the Cold War. Many laboratories had limited resources, and they rarely published their research in English. Those conditions helped shape research on antimicrobial treatment into bacteriophage and antibiotics, and Poland remain leaders in the former to this day.
My cultural immersion made me a better researcher. I now see cross-cultural cooperations as a way to overcome communication barriers that can block progress in science. By stepping outside my comfort zone, I gained the confidence to navigate my research in new directions that I might have otherwise boxed myself out of.
4. Why did the author apply for fellowship in Poland?
A. To practice Polish and learn its culture. B. To have another rewarding experience.
C. To follow the advisor’s suggestion. D. To continue the research started in Japan.
5. How did the author benefit from the experience in Polland?
A. He became an expert in Cold War history.
B. He had access to cross-disciplinary cooperations.
C. He secured abundant funding for future research projects.
D. He obtained scientific knowledge and a global perspective.
6. Which words best describe the author?
A. Helpful and determined. B. Cautious and innovative.
C. Adventurous and inquisitive. D. Curious and competitive.
7. What does the author imply about cross-cultural cooperations?
A. They are essential for the advancement of science.
B. They might box researchers out of a certain direction.
C. They should prioritize language training over research.
D. They are valueless for creative minds in scientific field.
B 5. D 6. C 7. A

Plastic and cheap clothes are not valuable property for generations to come. But a scientist exploring which items from our technological civilisation are most likely to survive for many millions of years as fossils has reached a disturbing conclusion: Plastic and fast fashion will be our lasting geological signature.
“Plastic will definitely be a signature ‘technofossil’, because it is incredibly difficult to break down. We are making massive amounts of it, and it gets around the entire globe,” says Sarah Gabbott, a University of Leicester expert on fossils. “So wherever those future generations dig, they are going to find plastic.”
Clothes will also make an abrupt entry into humanity’s fossil record. Today, the world’s growing population often wears mass-produced synthetic (合成的) clothing that is rapidly thrown away and it is not so degradable as cotton and silk.
“We are making it in ridiculous amounts,” says Gabbott. “We simply stick it into landfills without considering any consequences. It is already clear that much of modern fashion will end up being truly timeless.”
Fossils are not just objects left behind, but also the tracks of life’s activity written into the rocks. Human activities, such as oil drilling and nuclear tests, will leave lasting scars. Humankind has also created many near-indestructible chemicals, such as dioxins and DDT, which appear to be here to stay. “And such is also the case for graphite (石墨) used in pencils,” says Gabbott. “It is lovable and heartwarming to think that it may be the drawings of children that may survive best of all: a pencil portrait, perhaps, of a family outside a house, with the sun shining and a rainbow arching across the sky,” Gabbott says jokingly.
“The big message here is that the amount of stuff we are now making is eye-watering — it’s totally beyond measure,” says Gabbott. All of the stuff made by humans by 1950 was a small part of all the matter on Earth. But today it outweighs all plants and animals. “This raises serious questions for us all,” she says. “Do you need that? Do you really need to buy more?”
8. What does the author think of the property mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. Short-lived. B. Technologically weak.
C. Troubling. D. Environmentally harmless.
9. What can be categorized as technofossils?
A. Nuclear waste. B. Dinosaur bones. C. Cotton clothing. D. Solid landfills.
10. Why is “the drawings of children” mentioned in paragraph 5?
A. To highlight human creativity. B. To celebrate modern technology.
C. To stress that warmth of life is here to stay. D. To indicate that chemicals could be fossilized.
11. What is Gabbott’s primary concern?
A. Biodiversity loss. B. Geological record accuracy.
C. Technological progress. D. Overproduction of material goods.
C 9. A 10. D 11. D

根据第一段中的“But a scientist exploring which items from our technological civilisation are most likely to survive for many millions of years as fossils has reached a disturbing conclusion: Plastic and fast fashion will be our lasting geological signature.(但是,一位研究我们科技文明中的哪些物品最有可能作为化石保存数百万年的科学家得出了一个令人不安的结论:塑料和快时尚将成为我们持久的地质印记。)”
根据第二段中的“Plastic will definitely be a signature ‘technofossil’, because it is incredibly difficult to break down.(塑料肯定会成为一种标志性的“技术化石”,因为它极难分解。)” 结合第五段中的“Human activities, such as oil drilling and nuclear tests, will leave lasting scars. Humankind has also created many near-indestructible chemicals, such as dioxins and DDT, which appear to be here to stay.(人类活动,如石油钻探和核试验,将留下持久的痕迹。人类还制造了许多几乎无法摧毁的化学物质,如二噁英和滴滴涕,它们似乎会一直存在。)”可知,核废料是人类科技活动的产物,且难以分解,可归类为“技术化石”。故选A项。
根据第五段中的“Humankind has also created many near-indestructible chemicals, such as dioxins and DDT, which appear to be here to stay. “And such is also the case for graphite (石墨) used in pencils,” says Gabbott.(人类还制造了许多几乎无法摧毁的化学物质,如二噁英和滴滴涕,它们似乎会一直存在。“铅笔中使用的石墨也是如此,”加博特说。)”可知,提到儿童的绘画是因为绘画使用的铅笔石墨属于人类制造的难以分解的物质,可能成为化石,以此举例说明化学物质,含石墨这类物质,可能会形成化石。故选D项。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“The big message here is that the amount of stuff we are now making is eye-watering — it’s totally beyond measure,” says Gabbott. “This raises serious questions for us all,” she says. “Do you need that? Do you really need to buy more?(“这里的核心信息是,我们现在制造的物品数量令人瞠目结舌——完全无法估量。”加博特说,“这给我们所有人都带来了严肃的问题,”她说。“你需要那个吗?你真的需要买更多吗?”)” 可知,加博特主要关注的是物质产品的过度生产。故选D项。
D
"Regrets, I've had a few. But then again, too few to mention,” Frank Sinatra chanted in his 1969 hit "My Way”. The song's idea is attractive: that anyone can just declare what's done is done and move on. Some take the declaration a step further and claim they have no regrets at all. Whether a boast or an actual attitude, "no regrets” suggests that life can and should be lived without looking through the rear-view mirror.
Easier said than done, though.Author Daniel H. Pink launched the World Regret Survey, the largest ever survey on the topic. With his research team, Pink asked more than 15,000 people in 105 countries, "How often do you look back on your life and wish you had done things differently?” 82% said regret is at least an occasional part of their life; roughly 21% said they feel regret "all the time.” Only 1% said they never feel regret.
If you are of the "no regrets” type, you might think that all this regret is a recipe for unhappiness. But that isn't the case. True, being overwhelmed by regret is indeed bad for you. But going to the other extreme may be even worse. To rid yourself of regrets doesn't free you from shame or sorrow; it leads you to make the same mistakes again and again. To truly get over our guilt requires that we put regret in its proper place.
As uncomfortable as it is, regret is an amazing cognitive (认知) achievement. If today your relationship with your partner has soured, your regret might mentally take you back to last year. You would remember your being mean and sensitive, and then imagine yourself showing more patience, being kind instead of hurtful at key moments. Then you would fast-forward to today and see how your relationship could be progressing instead of languishing.
But regret doesn't have to be left unmanaged. The trick is to acknowledge it and use it for learning and improvement. You can be honest with yourself about what went wrong and use that knowledge to enjoy better relationships in the future.
12. What should we do if we have had a bitter quarrel with a close friend according to Frank Sinatra?
A. Attract more people to your argument. B. Send him/her a letter of apology.
C. Boast about being more reasonable. D. Forget about it and just let it go.
13. Why did the author mention the World Regret Survey?
A To introduce the work of author Daniel H. Pink.
B. To provide statistical evidence that regret is widespread.
C. To show that the "no regrets” attitude is rare and unrealistic.
D. To compare different people's attitudes towards regret.
14. What does the underlined word "languishing” in paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A. Improving. B. Healing. C. Showing up. D. Breaking up.
15. What does the author intend to tell us in this passage?
A. "No regrets” is a realistic and healthy attitude towards life.
B. It is better to feel overwhelming regret than to feel none at all.
C. Regret can be beneficial if people know how to handle it properly.
D. It is impossible and unwise for people to live a life without any regrets.
D 13. C 14. D 15. C
根据第一段“The song’s idea is attractive: that anyone can just declare what’s done is done and move on. Some take the declaration a step further and claim they have no regrets at all.(这首歌传达的理念颇具吸引力:任何人都可以宣称过往已成定局,然后继续前行。有些人更进一步,声称自己毫无遗憾)”可知,根据Frank Sinatra的观点,在与朋友争吵后,我们会忘了它,随它去。故选D项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“Easier said than done, though.Author Daniel H. Pink launched the World Regret Survey, the largest ever survey on the topic. With his research team, Pink asked more than 15,000 people in 105 countries, “How often do you look back on your life and wish you had done things differently?” 82% said regret is at least an occasional part of their life; roughly 21% said they feel regret “all the time.” Only 1% said they never feel regret.(不过,这说起来容易做起来难。
由文章第四段中“If today your relationship with your partner has soured, your regret might mentally take you back to last year. You would remember your being mean and sensitive, and then imagine yourself showing more patience, being kind instead of hurtful at key moments. Then you would fast-forward to today and see how your relationship could be progressing instead of languishing.(如果今天你和伴侣的关系恶化了,你的遗憾可能会在精神上把你带回到去年。你会记得自己既刻薄又敏感,然后想象自己在关键时刻表现出更多的耐心,变得善良而不是伤人。然后你会快进到今天,看看你们的关系是如何发展的,而不是languishing)”可知,instead of前后为转折关系,前文说关系需要有进展,而有进展的反面则是关系没有进展,进而结束关系,或者关系破裂,故推测languishing意为“关系结束,破裂”。与Breaking up“破裂”意思相符。故选D项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“But regret doesn’t have to be left unmanaged. The trick is to acknowledge it and use it for learning and improvement. You can be honest with yourself about what went wrong and use that knowledge to enjoy better relationships in the future.(但遗憾并非无法管理。关键在于承认它,并利用它来学习和改进。你可以坦诚地面对自己哪里出了错,并利用这些知识在未来享受更好的人际关系)”可知,作者想在这篇文章中告诉我们如果人们知道如何正确处理后悔,它可能是有益的。故选C项。

G. These are simple joys that don’t require much but offer a genuine reward.
F 17. G 18. B 19. C 20. E
空格前文提出问题“What if the key to a more fulfilling life isn’t about doing more, but about doing differently?(倘若通往更充实生活的关键并非在于做更多的事情,而是在于采取不同的方式呢?)”
根据上文“Pleasing activities are low-effort, high-reward. You don’t need to plan them far in advance or clear out a full afternoon. It might be a walk in nature, listening to your favorite playlist, or calling a friend just to say hello.(令人愉悦的活动往往不需要花费太多精力,却能带来丰厚的回报。你无需提前精心规划,也不需要占用整个下午的时间。这可以是一次在大自然中的漫步,听听你最喜欢的音乐,或者只是给朋友打个电话问候一下)”以及后文“One of the biggest misconceptions about fun is that it has to be some grand event. In truth, the most restorative moments often come from these smaller, everyday pleasures.(关于“乐趣”的最大误解在于,人们认为乐趣必须是某种重大的活动。但事实上,最能让人恢复精力的时刻往往来自于那些平凡的、日常的小享受之中)”可知,上文对令人愉悦的活动进行了说明,空格后文则是在总结这类活动的特点,G选项中的“These”指代前文的例子。故G选项“这些是简单而纯粹的快乐,不需要太多投入,却能带来实实在在的满足感”符合语境。故选G。
【18题详解】
根据后文“They might feel challenging at first, but they match with your values and leave you with a real sense of meaning. It could be learning a new skill that pushes you out of your comfort zone. These types of experiences take more effort than Pleasing activities, but they often help us feel more alive.(起初可能会觉得有些困难,但它们与你的价值观相符,能给你带来真正的意义感。这可能是学习一项新技能,它能让你走出舒适区。这类经历比那些让人愉悦的活动需要付出更多的努力,但它们往往能让我们感觉更加充满活力)”可知,本段论述的主要是成长型的活动。B选项“成长活动是那些让你延伸自我的活动”是对这类活动的定义,与后文内容相符。故选B。
【19题详解】
根据上文“Yielding activities are activities that require little effort but offer little satisfaction.(“消耗性活动”指的是那些所需付出的精力较少,但带来的满足感却很少的活动)”可知,空格前文定义“Yielding activities”并指出其特点。
根据上文“Once you’ve reflected on how you currently spend your time, try making one small shift each day. Choose a Pleasing or Living activity you would like to engage in more, even something simple like a short walk or trying something new that is consistent with your values.(一旦你对目前自己的时间使用情况进行了反思,就试着每天做出一个小小的改变。

Last winter, I volunteered at a local community center that offered free teaching and after-school activities for children from families that have less money and fewer opportunities. At first, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The children seemed shy, some struggling with basic reading or math skills. I felt nervous, wondering if I could really help them.
During the first few days, I focused on simple tasks: reading stories aloud, helping with homework, and encouraging them when they got answers right. Gradually, I noticed small changes — a child who had never smiled before now laughed at jokes, another who was hesitant to speak out loud started asking questions confidently.
However, not everything went smoothly. One boy, Tom, was especially headstrong and refused to follow instructions. He often interrupted lessons, played jokes on younger children, and sometimes even walked out angrily. At first, I felt frustrated and unsure how to reach him. Once after he stormed off, I came to him and said, “I know you’re not being difficult — want to tell me what’s bothering you?” He stared at his shoes. silent, but didn’t walk away. That small moment felt like a crack (缝隙) in his wall — he still didn’t open up, but he didn’t push me away either.
One afternoon, the center organized a small talent show. Many children were excited but Tom refused to participate. Some volunteers wanted to pressure him, but I decided to give him space while offering encouragement. Slowly, he agreed to recite a short poem. Watching him stand on the stage and finish without quitting, I felt a deep sense of relief and pride. The applause from the children made me realize patience and understanding can solve problems far better than force. I also saw how important it was to create more opportunities for children like Tom to explore their talents and feel supported. Tom himself seemed a little more confident and willing to try new things, which gave me an idea for the next step in my volunteering work.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
I knew I had to do more for Tom and the other children.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Tom changed clearly over the weeks.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I knew I had to do more for Tom and the other children. I talked to the center’s staff and proposed setting up a weekly “expression corner”, where kids could share poems, drawings or stories freely without pressure. I prepared simple props and invited Tom first, telling him it was just a small gathering with no strict rules. He hesitated but nodded slightly. To my surprise, he brought a hand-drawn picture of his family and shared it softly with the group, which won warm cheers.
Tom changed clearly over the weeks. He stopped interrupting lessons and even helped younger children with their homework. He actively participated in every expression corner, sometimes reciting poems, sometimes leading small games. His shyness faded, and a bright smile often appeared on his face. Seeing him grow from a rebellious boy to a caring and confident one, I understood that love and patience are the best gifts for these children. My volunteering experience also taught me that small efforts can light up their world.

A. To introduce the work of author Daniel H. Pink.
C Regret can be beneficial if people know how to handle it properly.
D. It is impossible and unwise for people to live a life without any regrets.
