The fire in Los Angeles burned Charlotte Tragos’s home to the ground. The height lines from when she was a child were drawn on the kitchen wall. Family treasures filled the cupboards. Her parents’ wedding video was stored in the basement. All of them were gone. Tragos described her home as a truly special and unique place, from which her family, including her parents and her younger sister, had to flee (逃离) when the fire broke out.
A few days after the fire, Tragos happened to see a video of an artist named Jordan Heber who was offering to create watercolor paintings of people’s homes before they were burned — for free. Tragos reached out to the artist, hoping to do it as a surprise to her family. Heber completed the painting in just three days. “Our homes are so much more than physical things,” says Heber. “I’m happy to create these gifts for the places that held so much life and memory.” The meaning of home was of great importance to Heber because she had moved frequently as a child.
Actually, Heber was always thinking about ways she could contribute after the fire. When she surfed online, an Instagram post caught her eye in which another local artist offered to draw people’s homes for free, and she was inspired (启发) . She has since created more than 25 paintings, including one for Jeremy Wineberg, whose home was also destroyed. Like Tragos, Wineberg was only able to take a few small things before he had to flee, leaving most of his belongings behind.
“They were not just things; they were a part of me and I just feel so lost,” says Wineberg. “However, the painting provided comfort.” He said Heber made a beautiful memory that looks exactly like a photo. Tragos is also forever grateful. “We are in a position where we have nothing, and the paintings that help us remember are really uplifting,” she says. Heber is glad people find her paintings meaningful, saying, “Hopefully it encourages others to use their talents to help people.”
4. What does Tragos think of her home in Paragraph 1?
A. It had a unique design. B. It stood in a special place.
C. It held unforgettable memories. D. It was filled with expensive things.
5. What inspired Heber to offer her help?
A. Her past life experience. B. Another artist’s kind act.
C. A request from a local family. D. A strong sense of responsibility.
6. Why does the author quote Wineberg and Tragos in the last paragraph?
A. To call for more help. B. To show what they had lost.
C. To highlight the power of art. D. To present their painful experiences.
7. Which of the following best describes Jordan Heber?
A. Skilled and brave. B. Caring and helpful.
C. Curious and independent. D. Honest and responsible.

What comes to mind when you hear the phrase “dress for success”? Perhaps it’s a no-brainer for you — wearing a nice suit so others will take you more seriously. But the truth is more complex (复杂的) and important. How we present ourselves doesn’t just change how others see us. It also changes how we see ourselves — and that can influence how we act.
A recent study shows this point well. When people believe that they look better, they act more kindly. They even donate twice as much to the poor as those who do not feel the same way. The researchers find that when people feel good about their appearance, they believe more people will notice them. This encourages them toward more generous (慷慨的) and helpful social behavior.
This new finding mirrors what scientists call the “halo effect”: it is common for people to believe that those who look good also have other positive qualities. In this way, they are more likely to be treated kindly or trusted. However, the new discovery is that this effect also works inwardly. When we feel we look good, we don’t just benefit from others’ positive opinions. We start to behave in ways that strengthen them. This change can begin early, as research shows even children are kinder to those who are “nice-looking.”
In short, our self-image and our generosity are closely connected. This can create a positive feedback loop (反馈循环) : feeling good about our appearance builds up our confidence, which shapes our behavior in a positive way. In turn, the positive feedback from others strengthens our positive self-image. Therefore, dressing for success is not just about being seen by others. It is about becoming the kind of person who encourages kindness — both in yourself and in others.
8. Why does the author mention wearing a nice suit in Paragraph 1?
A. To stress the cost of suits. B. To praise a formal lifestyle.
C. To suggest a way to success. D. To lead into a new topic.
9. How does feeling good about one’s own appearance affect a person according to the recent study?
A. It promotes kind social acts. B. It improves job performance.
C. It shapes one’s character. D. It leads to self- centered behavior.
10. What is the new discovery about the “halo effect”?
A. Its effect is self- directed. B. Its power works on others.
C. Its basis is others’ kindness. D. Its influence is always strong.
11. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Dress for Confidence: Feel Good B. Dress for Confidence: Impress Others
C. Dress for Success: Gain Respect D. Dress for Success: Encourage Kindness
D
New research suggests that using informal language can make the AI chatbots less accurate (精确的) in understanding what you mean. This raises a question: should we change how we speak to AI, or should AI get better at understanding us?
Researchers have found that people communicate quite differently with AI chatbots compared to human. When talking to chatbots, people are likely to use simpler grammar, fewer words, and are generally less polite. This is because we think chatbots are not good at understanding complex language and social situations. But conversations between humans are more formal and use a wider vocabulary, allowing for rich and nuanced communication.
However, using informal language with chatbots has a disadvantage. Researchers trained an AI model mostly on formal conversations between humans. They found that this AI struggled to accurately understand the meaning of the informal messages users sent to chatbots. This shows a gap between the data (数据) used for AI training and the reality of human-AI communication, which can lead to misunderstandings.
To improve the AI’s understanding, the researchers experimented with rewriting the informal messages into more formal language. Interestingly, this didn’t always lead to better results. Sometimes, it made the AI even worse. It was only when the AI was trained on both informal and formal language that its performance showed improvement. This suggests that AI models need to learn a variety of language styles to effectively understand human communication.
Noah Giansiracusa at Bentley University says he isn’t surprised that people talk differently to chatbots than they do to humans, but it isn’t necessarily something to be avoided. He believes it’s a positive sign that people recognize they are not talking to a human. He suggests that instead of trying to make chatbots act exactly like humans, we should value the uniqueness of human-AI communication.
12. What does the underlined word “nuanced” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Quick. B. Simple. C. Detailed. D. Common.
13. How could the AI’s understanding be improved?
A By avoiding informal language. B. By rewriting user messages.
C. By using different training data. D. By adding more formal talks.
14. What does Giansiracusa advise us to do?
A. Accept unique AI chats. B. Train AI with formal language.
C. Talk more politely to chatbots. D. Make chatbots more human-like.
15. What is the main purpose of the article?
A. To introduce a new AI technology. B. To show the limits of AI development.
C. To encourage polite talk with AI chatbots. D. To discuss an issue in AI communication.

【答案】8. D 9. A 10. A 11.

A. Quick. B. Simple. C. Detailed. D. Common.
13 How could the AI’s understanding be improved?
A. By avoiding informal language.
【答案】12. C 13. C 14. A 15. D

Dear Jack,
Hearing you’re planning a campus activity themed “Wildlife Protection”, I’m writing to offer some suggestions.
First, it is a wise choice to hold a photo exhibition of rare wild animals. Stunning images can vividly show their beauty and danger of extinction, making students aware of the urgency of protection. Besides, inviting a biologist to give a lecture is another wonderful idea, whose professional knowledge will help students understand the threats animals face and how to take practical action to help them. Additionally, why not hold a charity sale? Students can sell eco-friendly crafts or second-hand books, and the money raised can be given to wildlife conservation organizations.
I truly hope these suggestions can be helpful. Wish your event a great success!
Yours,
Li Hua
