It’s one of the most famous sculptures (雕塑) from ancient Egypt. Experts have been wondering how the Sphinx was built over 4,500 years ago. Now, new research suggests that nature might have played a key role in shaping it. According to a recent study in Physical Review Fluids, a yardang, a natural rock formation (形态), might have served as the base of the Sphinx. Yardangs are formed by wind erosion (侵蚀). When desert winds blow sand onto rocks, softer parts are worn away and harder ones remain. Some yardangs are tall like towers, while others are shorter. Leif Ristroph, the lead researcher, says the study shows how sphinx-like shapes are formed from erosion. “In fact, there are still yardangs that look like seated or lying animals. They further support our idea,” Ristroph explained. To see how the Sphinx was formed from natural forces, Ristroph’s team copied Egypt’s natural desert conditions in the lab. They made mounds mixed with hard materials first. They then ran fast-moving water over the clay to act like wind. In the end, a sphinx-like shape appeared. The hard material became the “head”. The “neck”, “paws” and “back” were also formed. However, this study doesn’t fully answer how the Sphinx was built. It’s still ambiguous. The question is how much of it was formed naturally and then changed. Still, researchers believe that the Great Sphinx of Giza must have required hard-working and highly skilled workers. 33. What does the new research suggest? A. The Sphinx is a man-made structure. B. Nature perhaps helped shape the Sphinx. C. It is impossible to create the Sphinx today. D. The Sphinx was built less than 4,500 years ago. 34. How did Ristroph’s team test their idea? A. By reading ancient books. B. By studying the real Sphinx in Egypt. C. By creating models and testing in the lab. D. By comparing the Sphinx with other sculptures. 35. What does the underlined word “ambiguous” probably mean? A. Unclear. B. Surprising. C. Correct. D. Valuable. 【答案】33. B 34. C 35. A 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。介绍了关于吉萨狮身人面像建造的新研究发现。 【33题详解】 细节理解题。根据“Now, new research suggests that nature might have played a key role in shaping it.”可知,新的研究表明大自然可能在塑造狮身人面像的过程中起到了关键作用。故选B。 【34题详解】 细节理解题。根据“To see how the Sphinx was formed from natural forces, Ristroph’s team copied Egypt’s natural desert conditions in the lab. The Five Constants of Confucianism (儒家五常) are Ren, Yi, Li, Zhi and Xin. Ren, the feeling of care and love we are expected to have, is widely recognized as the most important principle in life. Confucius is famous for teaching people “What you do not want done to yourself, do not do to others.” Li is about duty or respect and the way we connect with people. Ideas of Li also include the proper ways to interact with others. While Ren is about our opinions and feelings, Li is about how to express our opinions and feelings towards others and even the world around us. Xin, the most significant Confucian virtue, is the attitude we have towards others. In Confucianism, Xin is the key to developing a good and ordered society. Without Xin, the whole world would fall into a mess. Confucius successfully taught and trained 3,000 followers, and his most outstanding disciple was Yan Hui. He practiced Confucianism “Ren” and his famous saying is “to say less but do more, be modest and tolerant”. Confucius’ influence on later generations Under the influence of Confucius, Chinese thinkers of later generations believe that students should not only increase their knowledge, but also broaden their minds and enhance (提高) their spiritual ideas. 29. In which SECTION of the magazine can we see the material? A. SPORTS. B. HISTORY. C. BUSINESS. D. CULTURE. 30. What is the best Chinese for Yan Hui’s saying? A. 寡言笃行,谦逊仁德。 B. 仁者,人也,亲亲为大。 C. 己所不欲,勿施于人。 D. 礼之用,和为贵。 31. In the Five Constants of Confucianism, which is the most important for a harmonious society? A. Ren. B. Li. C. Xin. D. Yi. 32. Leif Ristroph the lead researcher, says the study shows how sphinx-like shapes are formed from erosion. D.
