My favourite book is The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. Tom lives with his aunt Polly in a quiet street of St.Petersburg,Missouri. He’s a lively and clever young boy,and he finds himself in many exciting adventures. He runs away with his two friends,Huck Finn and Joe,to an island in the middle of the Mississippi River for several days. With Huck he goes looking for treasure, and with Becky he gets lost in a cave. And finally, they find a box of gold.
My favourite scene in the book is when everyone thinks Tom is dead,he decides to go to his own funeral(葬礼).He hides and watches for a time and then suddenly he appears. Everyone is surprised to see him but they’re also pleased to see him alive.
Tom is the hero of the story, but there are other important characters. Huck is an outsider and everyone is afraid of him. Becky is pretty with fair hair,Joe is Tom’s best friend, and Injun Joe is the bad man of the story.
The theme of the story is about children growing up. It describes how strangers are seen in small towns of America. Finally,it talks about freedom, social rules and how people are punished for bad behaviour.
Why do I think The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a great book?Mark Twain wrote the story in 1876,but it’s still read and loved by people all over the world today. And although it’s only a story,Twain wrote it in the everyday English of the southern states of America in the 19th century,so it sounds very real. Today it’s thought to be one of the greatest books in American literature. Go on—read it!I know you’ll enjoy it,too.

Given the astonishing potential of AI to transform our lives, we all need to take action to deal with our AI-powered future, and this is where AI by Design: A Plan for Living with Artificial Intelligence comes in. This absorbing new book by Catriona Campbell is a practical roadmap addressing the challenges posed by the forthcoming AI revolution(变革).
In the wrong hands, such a book could prove as complicated to process as the computer code(代码) that powers AI but, thankfully, Campbell has more than two decades’ professional experience translating the heady into the understandable. She writes from the practical angle of a business person rather than as an academic, making for a guide which is highly accessible and informative and which, by the close, will make you feel almost as smart as AI.
As we soon come to learn from AI by Design, AI is already super-smart and will become more capable, moving from the current generation of “narrow-AI” to Artificial General Intelligence. From there, Campbell says, will come Artificial Dominant Intelligence. This is why Campbell has set out to raise awareness of AI and its future now — several decades before these developments are expected to take place. She says it is essential that we keep control of artificial intelligence, or risk being sidelined and perhaps even worse.
Campbell’s point is to wake up those responsible for AI — the technology companies and world leaders — so they are on the same page as all the experts currently developing it. She explains we are at a “tipping point” in history and must act now to prevent an extinction-level event for humanity. We need to consider how we want our future with AI to pan out. Such structured thinking, followed by global regulation, will enable us to achieve greatness rather than our downfall.
AI will affect us all, and if you only read one book on the subject, this is it.

A. It is packed with complex codes.
B. It adopts a down-to-earth writing style.
C. It provides step-by-step instructions.
D. It is intended for AI professionals.
34. What does Campbell urge people to do regarding AI development?
A. Observe existing regulations on it.
B. Reconsider expert opinions about it.
C. Make joint efforts to keep it under control.
D. Learn from prior experience to slow it down.
35. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To recommend a book on AI. B. To give a brief account of AI history.
C. To clarify the definition of AI. D. To honor an outstanding AI expert.

Passage 1
In 1818, 18-year-old British writer Mary Shelley published her first novel Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus. At that time, the Industrial Revolution was changing the world. New machines and technologies were being invented, and people began to dream of creating life through science. Shelley’s novel, often called the first true science fiction story, told a dark and thought-provoking tale that would echo through the centuries.
The book’s main character is Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist. He is obsessed with the idea of creating life from dead matter. After years of hard work, he finally succeeds in making a human-like creature. But the creature is ugly and frightening. Frankenstein is so scared that he abandons his creation. Left alone and rejected by everyone, the creature feels lonely and angry. He starts to take revenge (复仇) on Frankenstein, killing those the scientist loves most. In the end, both Frankenstein and his creature die in pain and regret.
Shelley did not just write a horror story. She asked a question that is still important today: What happens when humans try to play God? When we create something new, do we have a responsibility to care for it? Upon the novel’s publication, people regarded it as a chilling fantasy. No one could have imagined that in the 21st century, we would be talking about artificial intelligence (AI), cloning technology, and robots that can think and learn. These inventions are far more advanced than Frankenstein’s creature, but they raise the same moral questions.
Today, Frankenstein is more than a classic novel. It is a warning. As we develop AI and other advanced technologies, we must remember Shelley’s message: Progress without responsibility is dangerous. We should not create things just because we can. We must think about how our inventions will affect humanity and the world around us.
1.What can we know about Frankenstein from Paragraph 1?
A.It was written during the Information Age.
B.It was based on Mary Shelley’s personal experience as a scientist.
C.It described the beautiful results of the Industrial Revolution.
D.It is considered the first real science fiction work.
2.Why did Frankenstein’s creature take revenge on him?
A.Because the creature wanted to become a real human.
B.Because Frankenstein tried to kill the creature right after its birth.
C.Because Frankenstein refused to take responsibility for his creation.
D.Because the creature was born with a violent and angry nature.
3.What issue did Mary Shelley intend to explore through her novel?
A.What problems will arise when humans create life without responsibility.
B.What the world will be like when machines think like humans.
C.How we can develop AI and cloning technologies in a safe manner.
D.Why people create life even if it is dangerous.
4.What does the passage mainly tell us?
A.Mary Shelley’s personal life and the inspiration for her novel Frankenstein.
B.Frankenstein’s plot and its long-lasting moral warning for modern technology.
C.The similarities between Frankenstein’s creature and modern AI technologies.
D.The impact of the Industrial Revolution on the creation of science fiction works.
Passage 2
Some famous novels show that being the side character can give us access to deeper truths and a richer appreciation of the human condition than those too busy propelling the story forward.
Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle
“He possesses two out of the three qualities necessary for the ideal detective. He has the power of observation and that of deduction. He is only wanting in knowledge.”
There is little doubt that Sherlock Holmes is the most famous detective in literature. Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories now exist in over 70 languages, and Holmes is the most portrayed literary character in film and television history.
As a detective, Holmes often takes the lead in solving mysteries, but the story is told from the perspective of Dr. John H. Watson, Holmes’s loyal friend and companion.
There are many advantages to this. First, Holmes is odd and tends to focus on minor details. Telling a short story from his perspective would make it anything but short. Dr. Watson translates Holmes’s oddity into something less tiring for the reader.
On a literary level, having the story told by the companion helps keep the reader in suspense. If we had access to everything Holmes knew, the game would be over before it was happening. By seeing the Victorian world through Watson’s eyes, not only are we provided a picture that non-detectives can comprehend, but we get to enjoy Sherlock’s exciting adventures, free of spoiler (剧透).
The Great Gatsby by E. Scot Fitzgerald
“Yet high over the city, our line of yellow windows must have contributed their share of human secrecy to the casual watcher in the darkening streets, and I was him too, looking up and wondering. I was within and without, simultaneously enchanted and repelled by the inexhaustible variety of life.”
F. Scott Fitzgerald’s best-known work is a meditation on class in the supposedly egalitarian (平等主义) United States, the excesses of the 1920s, and how horrible it can be when the American Dream comes true. The story is told from the perspective of Nick Carraway, a young man who has moved to Long Island in hopes of becoming a stockbroker and cashing in on the 1920s boom. As the title suggests, the real hero of the story is his mysterious neighbor, Jay Gatsby.
The difficulty of the story centers on Gatsby’s attempts to pursue Nick’s married cousin Daisy, his dreams of reliving the past, and his efforts to climb into the upper-class of American society. Nick, who is an unreliable narrator, is present for many of the main events in the story. However, as hinted at in the above quote, he considers himself an observer rather than a driver of those events.
This allows us to get an outside view of the situation from somebody who admits he doesn’t entirely fit into the world he’s participating in while still being an intimate companion of those who do. The resulting commentary on the life of the American upper crust (症结) has been debated for a century.
5.If written from the perspective of Sherlock Holmes instead of Dr. John Watson, the book Sherlock Holmes would be ________.
A.short and to the point B.incomprehensible and long
C.full of spoiler and suspense D.interesting but too professional
6.What can be inferred from The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald?
A.Nick Carraway is not just as observer but a driver of the story events.
B.The real mysterious hero behind the title of the novel is Nick Garraway.
C.Readers will know more about the American upper class from Jay Gatsby’s perspective.
D.The unreliable narrator prevents readers grasping the harms of pursuing the American Dream.
7.Quotes from Sherlock Holmes and The Great Gatsby given below the title respectively in order to ________.
A.stick to the traditional pattern of a famous novel
B.indicate the side character’s role as the narrator
C.remind readers of the theme and plot of the novels
D.explain the main character’s neglect of deep truths
8.What message does the author want to convey through the two books mentioned?
A.Side characters in novels are usually dismissed as unimportant.
B.Classical novels must have quotes that have enduring power among readers.
C.Stories told from the most important character’s perspective are still the mainstream.
D.Individual, or historical eras can be deeply explored from a unique sideline perspective.

Remember the time when Little Red Riding Hood thinks that a wolf is her grandmother? “What big teeth you’ve got, Grandmother?” she says, and the wolf, disguised (伪装) as her grandmother, shouts back, “All the better to eat you with, my dear!”
If you really want to see how English-speaking humans think of the wolf, just look at the 5 ! “A wolf in sheep’s clothing” is not a pleasant person and a “wolf-whistle” is not a pleasant sound!
Yet wolves are totally unlike the image we have of them from legend and language. For a start, they don’t 6 humans; indeed, they do their best to keep out of our way. They are very sociable animals, living in packs and looking after their young with a fondness that should make some humans 7 themselves. Far from wolf music being 8 , the howl of the wolf — the cry of the whole pack — as the full moon rises in a star-bright sky, is one of the most beautiful sounds in nature. They are beautiful creatures which can run at speeds of up to 65 kph if they have to. They can jump up and run up rock faces like a cat. And when they do 9 , their 42 large teeth are fearsomely effective.
But the 10 remains that we love the lion, the king of the jungle, while we demonize (妖魔化) the wolf, one of the most beautiful animals in the world. Only 11 do writers treat them nicely; 12 , a she-wolf is supposed to have fed the twins Remus and Romulus, who went on to found the city of Rome.
And so, while man kills animals in their millions, often just for the fun of it, the wolf on the mountain, out in the wilderness, running over the Siberian wastes, represents a state of natural 13 that we do not know and can never obtain, even though we 14 it in our hearts. Perhaps that’s why, in the end, we 15 the wolf so much — for having something we can never get our hands on.

Passage 7
The Sad Zither (锦瑟) is a famous seven-verse poem written by Tang Dynasty poet Li Shangyin (813-858). Due to its rich imagery, the poem is regarded as one of the 1 (hard) poems to explain and translate.
In the beginning of the poem, the poet looks at his zither and recalls the death of his beloved wife. The big number of strings, which might not be the real number, 2 (be) mentioned to show his feeling. With so many strings, his zither creates complicated tones, 3 (suggest) the sorrow and depression the poet feels. The reality is so cruel that he wishes everything 4 happened was untrue. In this part, he uses four Chinese ancient 5 (myth) and legends: Zhuangzi, a philosopher, dreams of being a butterfly and couldn’t distinguish dream 6 reality; the ancient emperor Wang becomes a cuckoo and always cries; mermaid’s tears become pearl and vapor of jade from Lantian County can be seen in the sunlight. The first three stories all create 7 sad atmosphere. Though the last legend describes a beautiful scene, it’s hard 8 (reach), implicating the hopelessness.
Actually, the four stories he chose indicate Li’s 9 (satisfy) with his life.
In the end, the poet directly expresses his point. He wrote about his regret toward the passing years and the helplessness of being unable to change anything, even if he 10 (give) the chance to live those years again.

Passage 8
When Mark, a software engineer from Chicago, first arrived in Chengdu to lead a joint project, he prided himself on his cultural adaptability. He had read the guidebooks and even learned basic Chinese greetings. However, nothing prepared him for a dramatic and confusing Chinese dinner bill fight.
On a Friday evening, Mark invited two Chinese colleagues (同事), Li Wei and Director Zhang, to a hotpot dinner to celebrate the completion of a project. Since it was a casual outing, Mark had planned to go Dutch (split the bill), the standard and fair practice in Chicago.
The meal was fantastic and the atmosphere was warm, filled with laughter and toasts to future success. As the meal wound down, Mark signaled the waiter over and asked him for the bill, intending to split the cost equally and pay his own share. Seeing this, Li Wei and Director Zhang exchanged surprised glances and practically leaped from their chairs. What followed was a scene of chaos that genuinely alarmed Mark. Both of the colleagues were physically blocking him from the waiter. And each of them was trying to pay for the dinner.
“No, no, no! Mark! You are a guest in China. It’s my treat!” Li Wei insisted, his hand grabbing Mark’s arm with surprising strength. And Director Zhang, usually a quiet man, shouted loudly, “You are in Chengdu, my hometown. I should pay!” He already stuffed the money into the waiter’s hand.
Mark felt a rush of confusion and annoyance. In America, financial independence is a virtue, and if someone pays for you, they seem to look down upon you.
“Stop!” Mark said, his voice a little louder than he intended. The table went quiet. “Each pay his own way. OK?” Then he threw his share on the table heavily. His colleagues froze, looking awkward. The ride home was silent — Mark had finally followed his own way, but he couldn’t shake the feeling that he had lost something important.

【答案】1.D 2.C 3.A 4.B
根据第一段“Shelley’s novel, often called the first true science fiction story, told a dark and thought-provoking tale that would echo through the centuries.(雪莱的这部小说常被誉为第一部真正的科幻作品,它讲述了一个阴暗且发人深省的故事,其影响将延续数个世纪)”可知,这部小说被认为是第一部真正的科幻小说。故选D。

根据第三段“What happens when humans try to play God? When we create something new, do we have a responsibility to care for it?(当人类试图扮演上帝的角色时,会发生什么呢?当我们创造出新的事物时,我们是否有责任去照顾它呢?)”可知,她想探讨的是人类在创造生命时如果不承担责任会引发什么问题。故选A。

8.What message does the author want to convey through the two books mentioned?

【答案】5.B 6.A 7.B 8.D
根据Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle部分第四段“First, Holmes is odd and tends to focus on minor details. Telling a short story from his perspective would make it anything but short. Dr. Watson translates Holmes’s oddity into something less tiring for the reader. (首先,福尔摩斯很古怪,倾向于关注小细节。从他的角度讲一个短篇故事,那这个故事绝不会短。华生医生把福尔摩斯的古怪之处转化成让读者不那么疲惫的内容)”可知,如果从福尔摩斯而不是华生医生的角度来写《福尔摩斯探案集》,这本书会让人难以理解且篇幅很长。故选B项。
6.推理判断题。根据The Great Gatsby by E. Scot Fitzgerald部分第三段“Nick, who is an unreliable narrator, is present for many of the main events in the story. However, as hinted at in the above quote, he considers himself an observer rather than a driver of those events.(尼克是一个不可靠的叙述者,在故事中的许多主要事件中都出现了。然而,正如上面引用的暗示,他认为自己是一个观察者,而不是这些事件的驱动者)”以及最后一段“This allows us to get an outside view of the situation from somebody who admits he doesn’t entirely fit into the world he’s participating in while still being an intimate companion of those who do.(这使得我们能够从一个人那里获得对局势的外部视角 —— 这个人承认自己并不完全融入他所参与的世界,但同时仍是那些真正融入其中的人的亲密伙伴)”可知,Nick Garraway在故事中的很多主要事件中都出现了,他不仅仅是观察者,同时也是故事事件的驱动者。故选A项。
根据Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle部分第三段“As a detective, Holmes often takes the lead in solving mysteries, but the story is told from the perspective of Dr. John H. Watson, Holmes’s loyal friend and companion. (作为一名侦探,福尔摩斯经常在解开谜团中起主导作用,但故事是从福尔摩斯忠诚的朋友和伙伴约翰·H·华生医生的角度讲述的)”以及The Great Gatsby by E. Scot Fitzgerald部分第二段“The story is told from the perspective of Nick Carraway (故事是从Nick Carraway的角度讲述的)”可知,引用《福尔摩斯探案集》和《了不起的盖茨比》中的话是为了表明次要角色作为叙述者的作用。故选B项。
根据第一段“Some famous novels show that being the side character can give us access to deeper truths and a richer appreciation of the human condition than those too busy propelling the story forward. (一些著名小说表明,与那些忙于推动故事发展的人相比,作为次要角色能让我们接触到更深刻的真理,对人类状况有更丰富的理解)”以及后文对《福尔摩斯探案集》和《了不起的盖茨比》的分析可知,作者想通过这两本书传达的信息是,通过配角的旁观视角可深入探讨时代背景与人性本质。故选D项。

Passage 6
Once upon a time, much of the world was populated by wolves. They ranged all over the United States and Canada, Siberia and much of mainland Europe, as well as Great Britain, and if humans hadn’t come along, they would still be there 1 . But man did come along, farmed the land, 2 the wolves killing their livestock (家畜) and so gradually drove them out of the homes that had once been theirs.
Wolves are not 3 in our language and our literature, however. In fairy stories, they are seen as evil and dangerous, always 4 to eat people.

根据下文““A wolf in sheep’s clothing” is not a pleasant person and a “wolf-whistle” is not a pleasant sound!” 故选A。
A. avoid避免;B. frighten吓唬;C. attack攻击;D. protest抗议。根据下文“indeed, they do their best to keep out of our way”可知,狼尽最大努力不妨碍人类,因此是指不会攻击人类。故选C。

A. peaceful平和的;B. loud喧闹的;C. musical悦耳的;D. soft柔和的。根据下文“the howl of the wolf — the cry of the whole pack — as the full moon rises in a star-bright sky, is one of the most beautiful sounds in nature”可知,满月时狼群的叫声是大自然中最美丽的声音之一,因此是狼的音乐一点也不喧闹。故选B。
A. run奔跑;B. kill杀死;C. jump跳跃;D. cry哭泣。
A. possibility可能性;B. mystery谜;C. evidence证据;D. fact事实。根据下文“that we love the lion, the king of the jungle, while we demonize (妖魔化) the wolf, one of the most beautiful animals in the world”可知,我们喜欢狮子,妖魔化狼是仍然存在的事实。故选D。

A. on the whole总体;B. in addition此外;C. even so即便如此;D. for example例如。根据下文“a she-wolf is supposed to have fed the twins Remus and Romulus, who went on to found the city of Rome”可知,神话中一只母狼被描述为喂养了罗马城的奠基人,这是作家才会善待狼的一个例子,此处用for example“例如”引出例子。故选D。
A. duty责任;B. grace优雅;C. competition竞争;D. skill技能。根据上文“one of the most beautiful animals in the world”可知,狼是世界上最美丽的动物之一,因此是指代表了一种自然优雅状态。故选B。

1.hardest 2.is 3.suggesting 4.that 5.myths 6.from 7.a 8.to reach. 9.dissatisfaction 10.were/was given
故填is。
故填that。
固定短语distinguish A from B 意为:区分A和B。故填from。
故填a。
在“名词/代词)+be easy/hard/fit等形容词+不定式结构”中,不定式用主动形式表达被动含义,这时可以看成省略了动词逻辑主语for us, for me, for him等。 故填to reach。

The next day, Mark asked Li Wei, “Why were you and Director Zhang so aggressive last night?” Li Wei smiled and explained gently that treating guests was a deep-rooted Chinese tradition, a way to show respect, hospitality and sincerity to friends. “We didn’t mean to be aggressive. It’s our way of valuing the friendship with you,” he added softly. Mark suddenly realized it was a cultural misunderstanding, not disrespect or looking down on him. He felt guilty and apologized for his rudeness the night before. Li Wei patted his shoulder warmly, saying it was no big deal and they all understood his habit.
Weeks later, to celebrate another project’s completion, the three went out for dumplings. This time, Mark planned ahead. After the delicious meal, he playfully blocked Li Wei and Director Zhang before they could stand up, saying with a smile, “As your friend and colleague, let me treat you today — it’s my turn to show my sincerity!” The two laughed warmly and no longer insisted. They chatted happily over tea, with no awkwardness left. Mark deeply realized that respecting local customs was the key to building true cross-cultural bonds. The dinner ended with cheerful laughter, a beautiful blend of Eastern and Western cultures.
