For many years, the kitchen was a place I was afraid of rather than enjoyed. Despite my love for food and the excitement of trying new flavors, I was often discouraged by the fear of failing or making mistakes.
When I was a little girl, cooking wasn’t something I was encouraged to try on my own. Most meals were prepared by family members who made them seemingly effortlessly, which only made me feel more incapable. When I attempted to help, I was easily discouraged by the complexity of recipes and the number of things I had to handle all at once — shopping, timing, seasoning, and more.
As I grew older, that fear didn’t fade. I often chose to order food or rely on simple, premade items because the kitchen seemed like a minefield where one misstep could lead to disaster.
One day I reached a breaking point. I was tired of missing out on the satisfaction of making meals and wanted to feel more in control of what I ate. I decided that I had to face my fear head-on rather than avoid it.
My approach was to break things down into manageable steps. I picked recipes that were beginner-friendly and focused on mastering basic techniques before moving on to more complicated dishes. Initially (起初), I overcooked vegetables, mixed ingredients incorrectly, and at times completely forgot to add key components (成分). Instead of feeling defeated, I began viewing those moments as valuable lessons. Repetition was also key. By practicing simple recipes multiple times, I became more familiar with cooking processes. Repetition made me less anxious.
As I gained hands-on experience, I started feeling more capable and was willing to experiment with new recipes and ingredients. Now, the kitchen has become a playground of discovery for me.

Air flows through every building in which we spend time, including homes, offices, schools and stores. HVAC (暖通空调) systems keep that air moving, but they also carry too much carbon dioxide (CO2).
Right now, the biggest efforts to pull CO2 out of the atmosphere rely on huge industrial machines that cost a fortune and need a lot of space. Instead of building big carbon-capture (碳捕捉) plants, what if we could use the air systems already in place in every building? That’s the goal of new filters (过滤器) developed by researchers at the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering.
If every building used this kind of filter that fits into the air systems, we could remove up to 596 megatonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere per year. That’s like taking 130 million cars off the road for a full year. But even on a small scale, the benefits are clear. In 2024, a study showed that these filters could help cut energy bills by as much as 21.66%.
Normally HVAC systems have to bring in a lot of outside air to keep indoor CO2 levels down. People have to heat or cool that air, depending on the season — and that costs money. “Our filter removes CO2 inside the building, so the system doesn’t have to bring in much outside air. That means less air needs to be heated or cooled, which reduces the energy consumption in HVAC,” explained Ronghui Wu, who worked on the project.
Unlike standard filters, which ended in the trash every six months or so, these new filters are built for reuse. Instead of heading to landfills, they can be collected and refreshed. Po-Chun Hsu, lead researcher, sees a future where cities manage these filters just like they handle garbage and recycling. Used filters could be picked up, and sent to a central location, where their CO2 is removed. The captured carbon could then be turned into fuels or chemicals, adding value instead of waste.
It is a cleaner filter that captures carbon. If this technology catches on, buildings around the world could become quiet climate helpers.
8. What are the new filters expected to do?
A. Control air flow through every building.
B. Provide inspiration for building big plants.
C. Replace current heating and cooling systems.
D. Turn buildings into carbon-capture machines.
9. Why are cars mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To explore special ways to cut energy bills.
B. To reveal a disadvantage of HVAC systems.
C. To show the benefit the new filters can bring.
D. To stress the harm of CO2 from the atmosphere.
10. What do Ronghui Wu’s words suggest about the new filters?
A. They are cost-effective. B. They are in high demand now.
C. They are still in the early stage. D. They are essential to stable temperature.
11 What is the author’s opinion on the new technology?
A. It needs further improvement. B. It is internationally popular.
C. Its future can be very promising. D. Its efficiency varies with the season.
D
Do possessions (个人财产) make you happier? Is money the key to life satisfaction? Or, on the other hand, will reducing material wealth and adopting a minimalist (极简) lifestyle allow you to live a more content life?
New research from the University of Otago in New Zealand suggests that neither consumerism nor minimalism is the key to happiness. The study, published in The Journal of Macromarketing, indicates that happier people are those whose lifestyle encourages sharing and building interpersonal connections. However, reducing material possession may assist in living such a lifestyle.
The study explored two aspects of well-being: hedonic and eudaimonic. Hedonic well-being refers to feeling happy and satisfied in daily life, while eudaimonic well-being is a deeper level of life satisfaction related to a sense of achievement and personal growth. Researchers used a questionnaire to learn about the lifestyles and well-being of 1,643 New Zealanders of different ages and income levels. The questionnaire asked about habits associated with voluntary simplicity, such as sharing and saving resources, community building, living simply, buying local, and working towards self-sufficiency.
Survey data showed a clear link between personal satisfaction and beneficence — defined as sharing resources and skills within a community. Happy individuals were more likely to practice voluntary simplicity, especially in sharing resources and community building. These results held true regardless of age or income level. “It’s not directly the commitment to material simplicity that leads to well-being, but the realisation of the psychological and emotional needs that come from relationships, social connection, community involvement and a sense of living a purposeful and meaningful life,” said Professor Rob Aitken, lead study author.
Voluntary simplicity isn’t just good for personal satisfaction. It can also benefit environmental health. Overproduction driven by consumer culture increases global emissions and pollution. This study indicates that people can reduce the environmental impacts of consumerism without giving up happiness.
Lasting happiness isn’t about what you own or what you give up, but about the people you connect with. To live a more meaningful life, share your talents, borrow from others, and build relationships that will enhance your life.
12. What is the main finding of the study?
A. Wealth brings lasting life satisfaction. B. Minimalism leads to deep happiness.
C. Sharing promotes personal well-being. D. Simplicity ensures emotional balance.
13. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The explanation of well-being.
B. The process of researchers’ carrying out their study.
C. The way of people’s pursuing eudaimonic well-being.
D. The relationship between voluntary simplicity and income.
14. How does voluntary simplicity help well-being?
A. It increases material needs. B. It reduces work stress.
C. It meets emotional needs. D. It refuses self-sufficiency.
15. What does the author suggest readers do?
A. Share social responsibilities. B. Connect with others positively.
C. Prioritise the personal growth. D. Follow the minimalist tendency.

One month before Lucy Wilson’s 10th birthday, a new restaurant named “Funtime” opened in her neighborhood. Lucy and her parents went there for lunch, and they found that Funtime had a special room filled with all sorts of games and delicious food. The absolute highlight of that place was “Bubbles the Clown (小丑)”, who performed many fun tricks and created beautiful balloon animals and flowers. It filled Lucy’s fantasy and curiosity.
“Mom and Dad,” Lucy said, “I want my birthday party to be at this place. I love ‘Bubbles the Clown’.” Her direct wish was that she could enjoy the big day with friends there. “We like this place, too, Lucy. We will tell the restaurant that we want to hold your birthday party here.” Her parents agreed to her request. Lucy was excited and said, “I can’t wait until my friends come here for my birthday. I believe they will love ‘Bubbles the Clown’, too.”
Lucy went home and mailed out her party invitations. Then she crossed off the days on her calendar. She was eager for her special day. Well, the days went by quickly, and it was two days before her birthday party. Lucy was talking so excitedly about the party to her friends that she didn’t see the rock on the sidewalk ahead of her. Consequently, she tripped over the rock and cut her ankle. Her friends immediately rushed to the principal for help, who called Lucy’s parents and then called an ambulance.
Lucy was taken to the emergency room, and before long, she rested in a hospital bed. While her ankle was not broken, it was badly hurt. The doctor told Lucy that she needed to rest at home and that she could not move for about one week.
“But I will have my birthday party in two days. My friends will be there, and ‘Bubbles the Clown’ will be there, too!” Lucy cried. She couldn’t hold back her tears. Her mother comforted her, “We’ll figure something else out.”

One day, I reached a breaking point.

根据第二段“When I was a little girl, cooking wasn’t something I was encouraged to try on my own. Most meals were prepared by family members who made them seemingly effortlessly, which only made me feel more incapable. When I attempted to help, I was easily discouraged by the complexity of recipes and the number of things I had to handle all at once — shopping, timing, seasoning, and more.
根据第三段“As I grew older, that fear didn’t fade. I often chose to order food or rely on simple, premade items because the kitchen seemed like a minefield where one misstep could lead to disaster. (随着年龄的增长,那种恐惧并没有fade。我经常选择点外卖或依赖简单的预制食品,因为厨房就像一个雷区,一步走错就可能导致灾难)”可知,作者随着年龄增长,仍然害怕厨房,所以选择点外卖或依赖预制食品,因此,此处指作者童年时的那种对厨房的恐惧并没有消失,即fade意为“消失”,与disappear意思相近。故选B项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中“Initially (起初), I overcooked vegetables, mixed ingredients incorrectly, and at times completely forgot to add key components (成分). (起初,我把蔬菜煮过头了,配料混合错了,有时甚至完全忘了添加关键配料)”可推知,作者最初的烹饪过程并不顺利,出现了蔬菜煮过头、食材搭配错误、忘记加关键配料等问题。故选A项。
通读全文,结合第一段“For many years, the kitchen was a place I was afraid of rather than enjoyed. Despite my love for food and the excitement of trying new flavors, I was often discouraged by the fear of failing or making mistakes. (多年来,厨房对我来说是一个让我害怕而不是享受的地方。尽管我喜欢食物,对尝试新口味感到兴奋,但我常常因为害怕失败或犯错而气馁)”和倒数第三段中“I decided that I had to face my fear head-on rather than avoid it. (我决定,我必须直面恐惧,而不是逃避它)”以及最后一段“As I gained hands-on experience, I started feeling more capable and was willing to experiment with new recipes and ingredients. Now, the kitchen has become a playground of discovery for me.
C
Normally, HVAC systems have to bring in a lot of outside air to keep indoor CO2 levels down.
11. What is the author’s opinion on the new technology?
A. It needs further improvement. B. It is internationally popular.
C. Its future can be very promising. D. Its efficiency varies with the season.
D 9. C 10. A 11. C

Of course, a surprise visit from “Bubbles the Clown” was essential. Lucy was happy that day. However, she still felt disappointed about not being able to spend this special moment at Funtime. Her parents just smiled at her, expressing their love for her.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang, and in front of the door stood “Bubbles the Clown”. Lucy was so surprised that she could not speak. Learning that it was a surprise her parents had arranged for her, Lucy felt surrounded by love and joy. “Bubbles the Clown” performed all the tricks he did at Funtime. Then he opened a big suitcase and took out beautiful balloon animals and flowers. Lucy and her friends had really a good time.
