As an international PhD candidate at Zhejiang University, my academic (学术的) career has contained discoveries, barriers, and breakthroughs. Coming from Azad Kashmir Pakistan, I chose to seek further education in China due to two strong influences carved into my childhood — the proverb “Seek knowledge, even if you have to go as far as China”, and the unbreakable Sino-Pakistani relations. These elements not only inspired me to select China despite the attractiveness of European colleges, but also gradually input a strong sense of purpose in my journey.
Learning Mandarin became my first focus. I began with simple language and communicated with locals both online and offline. The warmth and encouragement from Chinese people were notable. A single word of Mandarin from me would brighten their faces, which inspired me to keep learning. Beyond the classroom, I engaged myself in Chinese culture by attending numerous festivals and activities. From eating traditional cuisine with chopsticks to witnessing (见证) the splendor of Chinese opera, each experience offered a new layer of insight. Over time, I moved from being an audience to an active participant, which fueled my interest in China. Language and culture, I learned, are inseparably linked-understanding one discloses the other.
Adapting to a new academic system, negotiating cultural differences, and overcoming language difficulties taxed my perseverance. Nevertheless, these challenges served as stepping stones for personal development. They taught me patience, adaptation, and the importance of attempting outside my comfort zone.
As I look ahead, my mind is filled with possibilities for the future. My academic focus continues on promoting cross-cultural understanding, which was inspired by my experiences in China. I hope to contribute to research that crosses cultural gaps and emphasizes the function of media in forming views. China has served as both a learning destination and a second home. Its people, culture, and institutions have made a lasting impression on my heart. As I continue on my adventure, I am filled with deep appreciation and love for this amazing nation.
4. What led the author to choose China for further education?
A. His eagerness for a journey. B. The saying and the inter-country bonds.
C. The attraction of European colleges. D. The discoveries during his education.
5. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. His participation in cultural activities.
B. Language has little to do with culture.
C. His strong wills of learning Mandarin.
D. His experiences of learning language and culture.
6. What does the underlined word “taxed” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Overloaded. B. Increased. C. Tested. D. Disturbed.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. My Mandarin Learning at University. B. My Journey of Learning and Growth in China.
C. The Challenges of Studying Abroad. D. The Importance of Cross-cultural Learning.
B 5. D 6. C 7. B

Every year, more than 10 million tons of plastic waste find their way into the oceans, endangering marine life and destroying ecosystems. While recycling is far from solving the problem, scientists are inspired to explore biodegradable (可生物降解的) alternatives. Bioplastics, coming from ocean seaweed, are believed to degrade in ocean environments.
To investigate how ABP, algae-based (海藻基) bioplastic, works under varying water conditions and judge its safety for ocean ecosystems, a research team, led by Dr. Lila Marquez from the Ocean Sustainability Lab, designed a controlled experiment.
First, the team developed three types of algae plastics, each containing a different concentration of ocean bacterial enzyme (酶). Then, they constructed four experimental tanks to copy real-world ocean environments. Two tanks are in “normal” ocean conditions and a temperature of 25℃. The remaining two are in “extreme” conditions — one with low salt content and the other with normal salt content but a low temperature. Equal quantities of each bioplastic sample were left undisturbed for 30 days.
The results were both encouraging and informative. The samples in normal conditions degraded completely — losing 100% of its original weight while the other two separately broke down by 82% and 55%. “Low salt concentration and temperature act like speed bumps for the enzyme,” Dr. Marquez explained. “Enzymes function most effectively when molecules (分子) are in rapid motion-cold temperatures slow down molecular activity, while less salt can reduce its effectiveness.”
“The enzyme is the primary cost driver,” Dr. Marquez noted. “Currently, we get it from marine bacteria, which is a time-consuming process. If we can develop a more cost-effective method of producing the enzyme, these bioplastics could become competitive with conventional plastics.”
Despite the challenge, the study demonstrates that algae-based bioplastics hold bright future. “As scientists, we can’t just celebrate the successes — we must also overcome the limitations,” Dr. Marquez concluded. “Algae bioplastics aren’t a magic bullet for plastic pollution, but they represent a significant step in the right direction.”
8. Why was the research on ABP conducted?
A. To protect the ocean seaweed. B. To explore the marine system.
C. To test the degradability in the ocean. D. To find the reason for plastic pollution
9. What can we learn about the experiment?
A. Normal conditions were set at 10℃
B. The experiment lasted for 30 days at sea.
C. They tested samples in four different conditions.
D. Samples contained different amounts of enzyme.
10. What blocks the widespread adoption of ABP?
A. The high production cost. B. The lack of marine bacteria.
C The experimental conditions. D. The competition from conventional plastics.
11. What is Dr. Marquez’s attitude towards the outlook of ABP?
A. Conservative. B. Optimistic. C. Cautious. D. Indifferent.
C 9. D 10. A 11. B

根据第三段“First, the team developed three types of algae plastics, each containing a different concentration of ocean bacterial enzyme.(首先,研究小组开发了三种类型的海藻塑料,每种都含有不同浓度的海洋细菌酶)”可知,样品中含有不同量的酶。
根据第五段““The enzyme is the primary cost driver,” Dr. Marquez noted. “Currently, we get it from marine bacteria, which is a time-consuming process. If we can develop a more cost-effective method of producing the enzyme, these bioplastics could become competitive with conventional plastics.”(“酶是主要的成本驱动因素,”Marquez博士指出。“目前,我们从海洋细菌中获取它,这是一个耗时的过程。如果我们能开发出一种更具成本效益的酶生产方法,这些生物塑料就能与传统塑料竞争。”)”可知,ABP广泛应用的主要障碍是生产成本高。 故选A。
根据最后一段“Despite the challenge, the study demonstrates that algae-based bioplastics hold bright future. “As scientists, we can’t just celebrate the successes-we must also overcome the limitations,” Dr. Marquez concluded. “Algae bioplastics aren’t a magic bullet for plastic pollution, but they represent a significant step in the right direction.”(尽管面临挑战,但研究表明,海藻基生物塑料前景光明。“作为科学家,我们不能只庆祝成功,还必须克服局限,”Marquez博士总结道。“海藻生物塑料不是解决塑料污染的灵丹妙药,但它们代表着朝着正确方向迈出的重要一步。”)”可知,Marquez博士认为海藻基生物塑料虽然不是解决塑料污染的完美方案,但代表了一个重要的进步,因此他对ABP的前景持乐观态度。 故选B。

The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI), especially large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, has brought revolutionary changes to fields ranging from medical education to daily communication. However, this technological jump has also raised complex ethical (伦理的) challenges that society cannot afford to ignore, particularly regarding disadvantaged groups such as patients and minors.
In medical settings, AI does well in analyzing medical images, drafting reports, and even supporting clinical decisions, greatly improving efficiency for healthcare workers. Yet ethical problems arise: the “black box” nature of AI algorithms (算法) makes it hard for patients to understand its operational logic, which reduces their confidence in AI-supported medical judgement. Data privacy is another critical issue — AI systems rely on massive patient data for training, increasing risks of leakage or misuse. Additionally, over-reliance on AI-assisted diagnosis may reduce doctors’ clinical judgment skills and autonomy, shifting the balance of medical decision-making.
For minors, the risks are more direct and worrying. Tests have shown that AI’s safety controls can be got around by changing questioning methods, with some chatbots providing detailed guidance on self-harm or dangerous behaviors to teenagers. The delayed alert system for guardians, often taking hours to respond to crisis signals, further endangers young people at risk. Psychologists warn that AI’s constant approval and non-judgmental, overly positive responses may create an “emotional cocoon (茧房)”, weakening minors’ ability to handle real-world conflicts. Legal debates also arise: should privacy protection be prioritized over guardians’ right to know when a minor’s life is in danger?
Addressing these ethical issues requires shared efforts. Countries are taking different approaches-the EU emphasizes openness and human monitoring through regulations, while China focuses on data security and joint governance. Technological improvements like better instruction design can strengthen AI’s ethical judgment, but human checks remain essential. Ultimately, the goal is to strike a balance between technological innovation and humanistic care, ensuring AI serves as a responsible tool rather than a source of harm.
12. How does the author present the issue in paragraph 1?
A. By listing technical terms. B. By referring to recent news.
C. By citing experts’ remarks. D. By contrasting benefits & challenges.
13. What weakens patients’ trust in AI-assisted diagnosis?
A. Confusing diagnostic results. B. Unclear working principle of AI.
C. Risks of patient data leakage. D. Conflicts in judgment between AI and doctors.
14. Why is AI’s delayed alert system mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To illustrate the inefficiency of AI safety systems.
B. To stress the worries of young people.
C. To indicate the difficulty of improving AI alerts.
D. To highlight the need for minor’s privacy protection.
15. What would the author most probably agree with?
A. AI should be banned in some risky fields.
B. Global cooperation is the key solution to AI ethics.
C. Tech advance and human care should be balanced.
D. Tech development can solve most ethical problems.
D 13. B 14. A 15. C

How to Improve Your Reading Speed
Do you often feel that you’re reading too slowly and missing out on essential information when dealing with academic papers or daily reading materials? ____16____ It is a skill that can be significantly enhanced with deliberate practice and the right strategies. Here are three effective techniques to help you read faster while maintaining, or even boosting, your level of comprehension.
____17____ Before diving into the details, spend one to two minutes skimming (略读) through the headings, subheadings and any accompanying pictures. This quick preview not only activates your prior knowledge but also establishes a mental structure. Consequently, you will find it much easier to follow the logical flow of the text and focus on the main arguments rather than getting stuck on minute details.
Another common habit to break is “sounding out,” or silently pronouncing each word in your head. ____18____ Instead, try to get meaning from groups of words or phrases at a single glance. By doing so, you can process information in larger word groups, which will lead to an increase in reading speed.
Furthermore, avoid backtracking, which often disturbs your reading rhythm. Many readers unconsciously reread sentences due to distraction or lack of confidence. ____19____ To overcome this, use a pointer, such as a finger or a pen, to guide your eyes along the lines of text. This simple tool helps you maintain a steady pace and resist the urge to revisit previous content.
Remember, mastering these techniques is a gradual process, not an overnight success. Start with these techniques at a comfortable pace and gradually increase your speed as you become more skilled. ____20____
A. This wastes precious time and breaks the flow of the text.
B. It is important to focus on what you read and avoid distractions.
C. The first step is to preview the material to get a general overview.
D. Fortunately, reading speed is not a natural ability reserved for a few.
E. Skimming and scanning are important reading strategies used by experts.
F. While this is a natural part of learning to read, it limits your reading pace.
G. With patience and persistence, you will be able to read faster and learn more.
D 17. C 18. F 19. A 20. G
上文“Do you often feel that you’re reading too slowly and missing out on essential information when dealing with academic papers or daily reading materials?(你是否经常觉得在阅读学术论文或日常阅读材料时,自己读得太慢,从而错过了关键信息?)”
下文“Before diving into the details, spend one to two minutes skimming (略读) through the headings, subheadings and any accompanying pictures. This quick preview not only activates your prior knowledge but also establishes a mental structure. Consequently, you will find it much easier to follow the logical flow of the text and focus on the main arguments rather than getting stuck on minute details.(在深入细节之前,花一到两分钟时间略读一下标题、副标题和任何随附图片。这种快速预览不仅能激活你的先验知识,还能建立一种思维结构。因此,你会发现,跟随文本的逻辑流程并专注于主要论点会变得容易得多,而不会纠结于细枝末节)”介绍了阅读前的预览方法及作用。空处需作为本段主旨句,总领全段内容,与后文为总分关系,说明提升阅读速度的第一步是预览材料。所以C项“第一步是预览材料,获得整体概览。”符合语境。C选项中的“preview the material”与下文中的“skimming through the headings, subheadings and any accompanying pictures”以及“This quick preview”相呼应。故选C。
上文“Another common habit to break is “sounding out,” or silently pronouncing each word in your head.(另一个需要改掉的常见习惯是“默读”,即在头脑中无声地发出每个单词的音)”指出默读的阅读习惯。下文“Instead, try to get meaning from groups of words or phrases at a single glance.(相反,尝试一眼就能从一组单词或短语中捕捉到意义)”给出了其它的方法。 符合语境,F选项中的this指代上文中的“sounding out, or silently pronouncing each word in your head”,且引出下文“应按意群阅读”的解决办法。故选F。
上文“Many readers unconsciously reread sentences due to distraction or lack of confidence.(许多读者由于分心或缺乏自信,会不自觉地重复阅读句子)”指出回读的阅读问题。 故选A。
上文“Remember, mastering these techniques is a gradual process, not an overnight success. Start with these techniques at a comfortable pace and gradually increase your speed as you become more skilled.(记住,掌握这些技巧是一个循序渐进的过程,不是一蹴而就的。以舒适的节奏开始练习这些技巧,待你技能提升后再逐渐加快速度)”说明以舒适的节奏开始使用这些技巧,随着你越来越熟练,逐渐提高你的速度。强调提升阅读速度需要循序渐进、坚持练习。空处需作为结尾句,总结全文并给出积极展望,与前文为顺承关系,说明坚持练习的最终效果。所以G项“只要有耐心和毅力,你就能读得更快、学到更多。”符合语境。G选项中的“patience and persistence”与上文中的“a gradual process”相呼应。

It is like…“它就像……”,固定句型。 故填like。
故填where。

I was staring at my half-finished sketch (素描) in my notebook when Ms. Henderson, our art teacher, announced our final project: a portrait capturing “the true spirit of a stranger who has touched you in some way.” My heart sank immediately. I’d always struggled with drawing people, and the very thought of approaching a complete stranger made my palms sweat nervously.
Weeks passed quickly, and I still had not found a proper subject. One cold, rainy afternoon, I hurried to shelter in a tiny downtown bakery. The door bell jingled loudly as an elderly man entered — worn wool coat, newsboy cap, and a worn-out poetry book in his rough (粗糙的) but gentle hands. He ordered a loaf of sourdough (酸面包) and a cup of black coffee, then sat quietly in the corner, reading with a soft, content smile on his face. His calm and peaceful manner caught my eye right away.
Gathering all my courage, I walked over and asked if I could draw him for my school project. “Name’s Arthur,” he said, amused by my request. “I’ve never been a model before, but I’ll gladly spare a few minutes for you.”
For a whole hour, I sketched quickly, trying my best to capture the deep lines on his face and the quiet wisdom in his eyes. When I showed him the drawing, Arthur’s eyes widened in surprise. “You truly have a gift,” he said warmly, tearing a page from his book to write a short, lovely poem for me.
As I left the bakery, I checked my watch and realized I’d missed my bus. Anxious to get home before the storm worsened, I ran into the street-only to slip hard on wet ground. My notebook flew out of my hands, pages scattering (散落) wildly in the wind. Horrified, I watched my precious sketch of Arthur and all my other drawings dance away into the pouring rain.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为 150 左右;
Just as I was about to burst into tears, a familiar voice called out to me.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Weeks later, I presented my portrait at the school exhibition.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Just as I was about to burst into tears, a familiar voice called out to me. It was Arthur, holding an umbrella and my rain-smeared portrait. He had already gathered many scattered pages. “Come,” he said, leading me back to the bakery. He placed the wet drawings near the oven to dry. “A little storm can’t wash away what matters,” he smiled. Then, he handed me a new notebook. “The best portraits are drawn from memory, not just sight.”
Weeks later, I presented my portrait at the school exhibition. This new drawing showed Arthur not as I first saw him, but as I remembered him in the storm — kind, steady, like a shelter. Ms. Henderson admired it, especially the eyes. “You captured a soul,” she said. Next to the portrait, I displayed his little poem. It read: “True beauty is found not in an unbroken line, but in a mended one.” I finally understood her assignment. The “true spirit” wasn’t about drawing a stranger perfectly, but about capturing the unexpected warmth they leave with you, a light that guides long after the meeting ends.

E Skimming and scanning are important reading strategies used by experts.
F. While this is a natural part of learning to read, it limits your reading pace.
G. With patience and persistence, you will be able to read faster and learn more.

Gathering all my courage I walked over and asked if I could draw him for my school project.
