Do you know what a volcano (火山) is? Would you like to make a volcano eruption (喷发) experiment (实验) at home?
What you need:
◦ Flour (面粉); salt; baking soda (小苏打); white vinegar (醋)
◦ A bowl; a water bottle; food coloring
◦ Warm water; dish soap (洗洁精)
How does it work?
A chemical reaction between vinegar and baking soda produces CO₂. What happens if you shake a soda? The gas gets very excited and tries to spread out. But there’s not enough room in the bottle for it to spread out, so it leaves through the opening very quickly, causing an eruption!
What to do:
Step 1: Make a salt dough (面团)—add two cups of flour, a little salt and a cup of warm water to the bowl and mix them until they form a dough.
Step 2: Form the salt dough in a bowl to create a volcano shape, and then let it dry for at least 24 hours.
Step 3: Put a spoon of baking soda, two drops of food coloring, some water and a little dish soap into the opening.
Step 4: Pour the vinegar into the opening and watch. It’s time for the volcano to erupt!

The exciting sounds of the Gaotai Lion Dance fill the air in Pengshui, Chongqing. The Tang Family Group is well-known for this performance. They are working hard to protect this tradition by teaching it, especially to young people.
Mao Yunfeng, 38, has practiced lion dancing for 26 years. He is now a leader and heritage (文化遗产) keeper. “To protect the art, we welcome everyone, especially students, to learn,” he says. His team has 26 members, with most being young. The youngest member is only 14 years old.
The lion is a symbol of strength and good luck. People believe it drives away bad spirits. The dance keeps traditional moves like jumping and stepping, but now also adds modern actions from dance and martial arts (武术). The music has changed too, mixing traditional and modern styles. Performers dance on high platforms made of many tables, following the beat of the drum. “Before every show, we honor our grand master to show our respect. It’s a tradition we must remember,” Mao shares. His team carefully chooses how high to build the stage, often using 36 strong tables. The team performs at different events and teaches in schools.
Since 2011, this dance has become a protected national heritage. Mao hopes to show it at main events outside Chongqing, so more people will learn and value it. Every year, TIME magazine shares the year’s best inventions. Some are high-tech helpers, while others are fun toys. TIME for Kids has picked five favorites. Which one do you like best?
1. A Brand-New Barbie
In March, Mattel introduced the You Create Barbie basic kits. These doll kits (套装) encourage children’s creativity. Each set includes three different heads and three movable bodies with elbows (肘部) and knees. They also come with hair, clothing, and accessories (饰品). Some kits even offer different body shapes and skin colors. Now, Barbie fans can create a doll that looks just like them, or design a new friend.
2. Better Weather Balloons
Weather forecasts (预报) help keep people safe, but they aren’t always perfect. WindBorne Systems created Atlas, a network of strong weather balloons that last longer. These balloons collect data such as temperature and wind speed. An AI model then uses this information to create more accurate (准确的) forecasts. This gives people more time to prepare for bad weather.
3. A New Baseball Bat
The New York Yankees started their 2025 season strongly, hitting 15 home runs in their first three games. Some players used a new type of bat called the “torpedo bat”. These bats may look different, but they have a wider “sweet spot”. Research shows that when the ball hits this area, players can hit it harder and further.
4. A Banana That Stays Fresh
No one likes brown, soft bananas. To reduce food waste, a UK company called Tropic created a non-browning banana. It stays fresh for at least 12 hours after peeling (剥皮). Tropic is also developing bananas that stay green longer and can avoid a common banana disease affecting farms worldwide.
5. A Robot Roommate
Would you like a robot to help with housework? Meet Figure 03, a human-like robot designed for factories, offices, and homes. It can already do some tasks like folding clothes. It can also fill a dishwasher, though humans still need to start it and help if something falls. The company hopes to have an improved version (版本) in some homes by 2026.
32. What’s Mattel’s purpose of inventing the doll kits?
A. To pick kids’ favorites. B. To offer kids helpers.
C. To encourage kids’ creativity. D. To provide kids with convenience.
33. What can we learn from the paragraph about Better Weather Balloons?
A. Perfect forecasts help people prepare faster.
B. Atlas balloons last shorter than ordinary ones.

B. A baseball team leader uses it as a reward to cheer the team players up.
C. A baseball game judge holds it to remind the players of the rules of the game.

①An English Class with Songs
Ms. Wang, an English teacher in Grade 8, often uses English songs to teach new words. Last week, when she taught the topic “Daily Activities”, she played the song Days of the Week.
First, she let students listen to the song and circle the new words like “Monday”, “Tuesday” and “weekend” in their textbooks. Then, she asked students to sing along and match the words with the pictures of different activities (like going to school on Monday, playing sports on Sunday).
“The song makes new words easier to remember,” said Lucy, one of Ms. Wang’s students. “I even sing it at home to review!”
②Lisa shares her English learning trouble
I’m in Grade 8. I like English class, but I’m afraid to speak English in front of others. Every time Ms. Wang asks me to answer questions, my face turns red and I can’t say a word. I know speaking is important for English learning, but I just don’t have the courage. My deskmate Emma often tells me to practice more, but I don’t know how.
③Mr. Zhang, a Grade 9 English teacher, answers interview questions
Interviewer: Many students find it hard to keep remembering English words. Do you have any advice?
Mr. Zhang: Yes. Besides using songs like Ms. Wang does, students can also make word cards—write the English word on one side and the Chinese meaning on the other. Review them for 5 minutes every morning.
Interviewer: Some students, like Lisa, are afraid to speak English. What do you think they can do?
Mr. Zhang: Speaking needs practice. Teachers should create a relaxing class environment, but students themselves should also try. For example, they can _____________.
41. Does Lucy think English songs help remember new words?
_______________________________________________
42. What does Lisa do when Ms. Wang asks her to answer questions?
_______________________________________________
43. According to the passage, what can students do to remember English words better?
_______________________________________________
44. Fill in the blank in the passage. (At least 20 words)

【答案】41. Yes, she does.
42. Her face turns red and she can’t say a word.
43. They can use songs, make word cards and review them for 5 minutes every morning.
44. practice speaking with a friend or in front of a mirror, record themselves to improve pronunciation, and start with short sentences to build confidence gradually.
【解析】
【导语】本文主要介绍了王老师用英文歌曲教单词的课堂、学生Lisa分享的英语学习困扰,以及张老师针对单词记忆和口语表达的建议。
【41题详解】
根据“The song makes new words easier to remember,”可知,Lucy认为英文歌曲有助于记忆单词。故填Yes, she does.
【42题详解】
根据“Every time Ms. Wang asks me to answer questions, my face turns red and I can’t say a word.”可知,每次王老师让Lisa回答问题,她的脸都会变红,一句话也说不出来。故填Her face turns red and she can’t say a word.
【43题详解】
根据“Besides using songs like Ms. Wang does, students can also make word cards—write the English word on one side and the Chinese meaning on the other. Review them for 5 minutes every morning.”可知,学生可以通过用歌曲、制作单词卡并每天复习 5 分钟来更好地记单词。故填They can use songs, make word cards and review them for 5 minutes every morning.
【44题详解】

Times may have changed, but it’s still usual to see teenagers falling asleep during lessons. Why does this happen? One major reason is simple: many students just don’t get enough sleep.
So, why are teens so short on sleep? Homework plays a big part. For most students, homework can take three to four hours every night. If a teen wants to join club activities, play sports, enjoy computer games, or watch TV, they often have to stay up late to finish everything. Besides, some take on after-school jobs to save money for college, help their families, or buy things they like, which also cuts into their sleep time.
Physical problems can be another cause. Some students have trouble sleeping at night—a problem called insomnia (失眠). This can leave them tired and unable to stay awake in class, and sometimes they may even need to see a doctor.
Sleeping in class can lead to serious problems. First, it’s against school rules and teachers don’t allow it. Also, other students might laugh at those who fall asleep. But the worst result is that sleeping students miss important knowledge. Over time, this can even cause them to fail their subjects.
Since teenagers often find it hard to solve this problem on their own, sleeping in class is likely to remain common. Things will only improve when more teens learn how to balance school, work, and their personal lives. Finding that balance is the key to staying awake and learning well in class.
Summary
It is common for teenagers to fall asleep in class because of different reasons. One main cause is that ____50____, since they have heavy homework and after-school activities.
21. According to the text, what gas is produced to make the volcano erupt?
A. O2. B. H2. C. CO2. D. CO.

Times may have changed but it’s still usual to see teenagers falling asleep during lessons.
Besides, ____51____ like insomnia can also lead to sleepiness in class. Falling asleep in class brings serious results, the worst is they may ____52____. To solve this problem, ____53____.
