Seven years ago, college senior Joey Romano broke his wrist skateboarding near the University of Texas at Austin. With poor insurance, he worried about the high cost of an ambulance, so he called an Uber instead. The driver, Beni Lukumu, helped him into the car and drove him to urgent care, which quickly sent him to the emergency room (ER).
Learning Romano had no family nearby, Lukumu, who’d immigrated from the Congo at 25 and knew the pain of being far from loved ones, insisted on staying. Despite a busy day of rides, he signed Romano into the ER and sat with him from 2 to 8 p.m., missing hours of work. “He needed somebody to be by his side,” Lukumu later said. At the time, Romano was under treatment and recalled, “I remember feeling glad he was there. He has this warm presence, and strangely, it felt like we had known each other forever.”
Unknown to Lukumu, Romano was in one of the darkest periods of his life. His brother Johnny had died of cancer in 2008, and Romano had a hard time with sorrow. “After losing my brother, I just became really lonely. I could barely take care of myself, let alone others. I shut down and closed myself off. I became really cold,” he said.
Lukumu’s kindness became a turning point. When Romano’s grandmother arrived to take him home and offered a reward, Lukumu refused but joined them for dinner — a gesture that began a friendship lasting over seven years. “That one act of kindness helped me see the good in the world again,” Romano said, “Having him spend his entire day with me — a complete stranger, out of the goodness of his heart — helped me put things into perspective. Lukumu absolutely changed my life.”
Today, Lukumu works in the insurance industry in Austin, while Romano is a renewable energy developer. They check in on each other a couple of times a year. It all started with a shared ride — an encounter they’re both still grateful for.
24.Why did Romano call an Uber instead of an ambulance?
A.Because he knew an Uber driver. B.Because he preferred Uber’s service.
C.Because he couldn’t reach an ambulance. D.Because his insurance coverage was limited.
25.What did Lukumu do for Romano at the ER?
A.He helped Romano find a doctor. B.He paid for Romano’s medical bills.
C.He managed to contact Romano’s relatives. D.He kept Romano company for several hours.
26.Which word best describes Romano before he met Lukumu?
A.Peaceful. B.Regretful. C.Withdrawn. D.Ambitious.
27.What message does the story convey?
A.Love and kindness can restore faith in life.
B.Good luck can change a hopeless situation.
C.Long-distance friendship requires regular contact.
D.Career success comes from unexpected encounters.

The invention of the stethoscope is widely credited to the 19th-century French doctor Rene Laënnec. Before the invention, doctors often placed their ear directly on a patient’s chest to listen for abnormalities in breathing and heart sounds. In 1816, a young lady suffering from heart disease went to see Laënnec. Placing his ear on her chest, however, was considered socially inappropriate. Inspired by children sending sounds through a long wooden stick outside his office, Laënnec instead rolled a sheet of paper to listen to her heart. He was surprised by the clear heart sounds he heard, and the first stethoscope was born.
Over the next decades, researchers made some important improvements. Firstly, a thin film called a diaphragm was added to amplify the slight sound that might be very hard for ears to detect. The next major breakthrough occurred in the mid-1850s, when Arthur Leared and George Philip Cammann developed the so-called binaural stethoscope, which is remarkably similar to the stethoscopes doctors use today: It had separate earpieces connected by two flexible tubes to deliver sounds to both ears and reduce outside noise.
However, listening with human ears has limitations. Abnormal sounds often emerge only at advanced stages, when treatment is less effective. Moreover, different diseases may produce similar sounds, making accurate diagnosis (诊断) extremely difficult.
To address these challenges, researchers are now combining stethoscopes with artificial intelligence (AI). First, they record sounds from the stethoscope and then turn the sounds into electronic signals that can be stored and analyzed by AI models.
The result seems to be promising. Some well-trained AI models can classify heart sounds correctly over 95% of the time and can even differentiate between types of heart disease with nearly 85% accuracy. Most importantly, a few of them are able to detect heart and lung problems at early stages.
28.Why did Rene Laënnec use a rolled sheet of paper to listen to his patient’s heart?
A.To copy those children. B.To avoid embarrassment.
C.To amuse the young lady. D.To test his new discovery.
29.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “amplify” in paragraph 2?
A.Strengthen. B.Reduce. C.Deliver. D.Hide.
30.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.Effects of timely treatment. B.Challenges of early diagnosis.
C.Limitations of stethoscopes. D.Great potentials of AI models.
31.What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text?
A.To demonstrate how AI models are trained.
B.To explain what the binaural stethoscope is.
C.To tell the stethoscopes’ major developments.
D.To show the stethoscopes’ working principles.

After centuries of near-extinction, Europe’s wolves have made a remarkable comeback. In Denmark, the comeback has been more modest. wolves disappeared from Danish forests in 1813, when they were hunted to extinction — remembered only in stories and fairytales. In 2017, Denmark celebrated its first confirmed breeding pack in more than 200 years. Today, Denmark’s wolf population is estimated to be just over 40. Yet even this small number has brought about fierce debates over livestock (牲畜) and public safety in Denmark — one of Europe’s most intensively (集约地) farmed countries.
Conservationists call wolves a “keystone species”. This means that because they naturally control numbers of deer and other prey, their presence can allow forests and grasslands to recover. Yellowstone Park in the US is a prime example: After wolves were reintroduced, aspen and willow trees flourished for the first time in decades.
But Denmark is not Yellowstone. Its countryside is a combination of farms, towns and highways with small, heavily managed nature reserves. Whether wolves can restore “wild balance” here is uncertain. Indeed, for some farmers and rural residents, wolves are not symbols of rewilding — they are real predators (捕食性动物), threatening livestock and livelihoods.
Fear also plays a role: Parents worry about their children walking in the forest, and dog owners worry about their pets. Statistically, wolf attacks on humans are extremely rare, yet perceived beliefs frequently overshadow facts.
Incidents in neighbouring countries can add to the unease. Earlier this year, a wolf attacked a six-year-old boy in the Netherlands, a country not very far from Denmark. And in Denmark this summer, two young boys who had learnt the news spent hours up a tree, as they thought a “violent wolf” was nearby. The story grabbed headlines, only for it to turn out that the animal was actually a large domestic cat.
Wolves have come to represent much more than just wildlife. They are symbols of environmental ideals and societal perspectives. For policymakers, understanding these perceptions is essential to achieving the delicate balance between species recovery and public acceptance.
32.Why does the author mention Yellowstone Park?
A.To show wolves’ slow growth in Denmark.
B.To illustrate wolves’ important ecological role.
C.To indicate a trend of environmental protection.
D.To stress the necessity of similar parks in Denmark.
33.What is the root of the conflict over wolves in Denmark?
A.Denmark has long been wolf-free.
B.wolves’ populations keep growing.
C.The public fail to see the immediate benefits.
D.The countryside is dominated by human activities.
34.What point does the “violent wolf” story make?
A.Fear can outweigh facts. B.wolves are a common threat.
C.Big cats may be mistaken for wolves. D.Children need more safety education.
35.What is the author’s suggestion to policymakers?
A.To relocate wolves to avoid human-wolf conflicts.
B.To prioritize public concerns over unpleasant facts.
C.To enhance safety measures to reduce wolves’ threats.
D.To fully appreciate the complexity of public concerns.

Nowadays we are quick to take offense, slow to forgive, and often too proud to admit when we are wrong. Yet perhaps if we brushed up our apology skills, we could help relieve the tension in our communities and our world, one honest admission at a time.
36 They acknowledge the worth of the person we have wronged and the shared respect that still connects us, even when trust has been broken. In 2016, Professor Roy Lewicki and colleagues examined what makes an apology effective. They identified six essential elements: Expression of regret; Explanation of what went wrong; Acknowledgment of responsibility; Declaration of regret; Offer of repair; Request for forgiveness.
While all six play a role, the researchers found that two stood above the rest: acknowledging responsibility and offering to repair the damage. It turns out that the most powerful words in an apology are the simplest: “It was my fault.” 37 It tells the other person that you see what happened clearly and that you are willing to own your part in it. 38 As Professor Lewicki points out, talk is… just words. That’s why the second most important part of an apology is the offer of repair. Saying “I’ll fix what I broke” transforms regret into action.
Other elements still matter. But interestingly, the least important piece was asking for forgiveness. Perhaps that’s because it’s not something you can demand. 39
We can’t control how the world acts, but we can live out the humbleness and responsibility that make harmony possible. 40 In a time when divisions feel unending, a good apology is not just words, it’s an act of repair for the fabric of our shared lives.
A.But responsibility alone is not enough.
B.Apologies matter as they bridge hurt and healing.
C.Still, we all know not all apologies are created equal.
D.A sincere apology releases anger and brings back connection.
E.Taking responsibility breaks down defensiveness and excuses.
F.It’s a gift the other person chooses to give when they’re ready.
G.With these six steps, our conflicts will find a new path forward.

The famous TV presenter Sarah Cawood says that opening up about feeling left out and left behind in her career since becoming a mother has been a truly relaxing experience, rather than an embarrassing one.
With her warm personality and sharp wisdom, Sarah Cawood has won the hearts of audiences ever since she started presenting popular shows like Top of the Pops and The Girlie Show. Her on-screen charm and quick thinking made her a familiar and beloved figure in the entertainment world.
Three years ago, she underwent treatment for breast cancer, which made her lose her job. When her children were young, her husband Andy, a TV producer, became the main breadwinner of the family. Meanwhile, she took on the role of a stay-at-home mum, enjoying the opportunity to be there for her children every day. The work she did at home, like taking care of the family, was certainly valuable. But she also wanted to earn her own money. There were times when she even worked as a cleaner to support the family’s finances.
In September, the 53-year-old posted a video on social media where she was in tears on her bed, wearing a nightdress. “I’m not usually someone who cries easily, and I always try to be content with what I have in life,” she said. “But on that particular day, everything just became too much for me, and I felt I had to be honest.”
The words written with the video where she showed her helpless side were even more direct. Cawood admitted that although she was healthy and had a wonderful family, she felt lost. After spending a lot of time looking through social media and seeing all her former workmates achieving great success, she couldn’t help but feel envious. “It seems so silly to admit that at the age of 53, I feel envious,” she wrote. “But here’s the truth: I couldn’t be happier or prouder of those women. I just miss them... and I miss being one of them.”

W: OK, thank you very much, Scott. You make some good points.
M: It’s my pleasure.
W: Now I’m going to show you around the college.

【答案】24.D 25.D 26.C 27.A
根据第一段中“With poor insurance, he worried about the high cost of an ambulance, so he called an Uber instead. (由于没有足够的保险,他担心救护车的费用太高,所以他叫了一辆优步。)”可知,Romano叫的是优步而非救护车是因为他的保险覆盖范围有限。故选D项。
25.细节理解题。根据第二段中“Despite a busy day of rides, he signed Romano into the ER and sat with him from 2 to 8 p.m., missing hours of work. (尽管这一天他接了很多单,但他还是将Romano送进了急诊室,并从下午2点一直陪着他到8点,因此错过了好几个工作小时。)”可知,Lukumu在急诊室陪伴了Romano好几个小时。故选D项。
26.推理判断题。根据第三段中Romano所说的话“After losing my brother, I just became really lonely. I could barely take care of myself, let alone others. I shut down and closed myself off. I became really cold (在失去哥哥之后,我变得异常孤独。我自己都难以照顾好自己,更别提照顾别人了。我封闭了自己,把自己孤立起来。我变得非常冷漠。)”可知,Romano当时封闭自己,变得冷漠,其状态是孤僻的。A.
通读全文,尤其是第四段中Romano所说的话“Having him spend his entire day with me — a complete stranger, out of the goodness of his heart — helped me put things into perspective. Lukumu absolutely changed my life. (有他整日与我相处——一个完全陌生的人,出于他的善心——这让我得以正确看待一切。Lukumu彻底改变了我的人生。)”可知,故事的核心是Lukumu对一个陌生人的无私陪伴,这一善举将正处于人生黑暗期、自我封闭的Romano拉了出来,让他重拾对世界和生活的信心。由此可知,爱与善意可以恢复对生活的信念。故选A项。
C
【答案】28.B 29.A 30.D 31.C
根据第一段中“In 1816, a young lady suffering from heart disease went to see Laënnec. Placing his ear on her chest, however, was considered socially inappropriate. Inspired by children sending sounds through a long wooden stick outside his office, Laënnec instead rolled a sheet of paper to listen to her heart.(1816 年,一位患有心脏病的年轻女士前来就诊。然而,将耳朵贴在她的胸部被认为是不合适的。Laënnec受到孩子们在办公室外用一根长木棍传递声音的启发,于是将一张纸卷成圆筒状来听她的心跳。)”可知,Rene Laënnec为了避免尴尬才用纸筒听患者心脏的。故选B。
29.词句猜测题。根据画线词上文“Over the next decades, researchers made some important improvements. Firstly, a thin film called a diaphragm was added(在接下来的几十年里,研究人员对其进行了多项重要改进。首先,加装了一层名为振动膜的薄膜)”以及下文“the slight sound that might be very hard for ears to detect(耳朵很难察觉的微弱声音)”可推断,加薄膜是对听诊器的改进,用于放大、增强难以察觉的微弱声音,划线词amplify意为“放大、增强”,与Strengthen意思一致。故选A。
根据最后一段“The result seems to be promising. Some well-trained AI models can classify heart sounds correctly over 95% of the time and can even differentiate between types of heart disease with nearly 85% accuracy. Most importantly, a few of them are able to detect heart and lung problems at early stages.(研究成果前景可观:一些训练成熟的AI模型,心跳声分类准确率超95%,甚至能以近85%的准确率区分不同类型的心脏病。最重要的是,部分模型可在早期阶段检测出心肺疾病。)”可知,这一段主要是谈听诊器与AI模型结合的前景,介绍AI模型的高准确率、可区分心脏病类型、能早期检测心肺问题,体现AI模型的巨大潜力。故选D。
31.主旨大意题。根据第一段中“The invention of the stethoscope is widely credited to the 19th-century French doctor Rene Laënnec.(听诊器的发明通常归功于19世纪的法国医生Rene Laënnec。)”、第二段中“Over the next decades, researchers made some important improvements. (在接下来的几十年里,研究人员做出了一些重要的改进。)”、第四段中“To address these challenges, researchers are now combining stethoscopes with artificial intelligence (AI).(为了应对这些挑战,研究人员正在将听诊器与人工智能(AI)结合起来。)”
D
【答案】32.B 33.D 34.A 35.D
根据第二段“Conservationists call wolves a “keystone species”. This means that because they naturally control numbers of deer and other prey, their presence can allow forests and grasslands to recover. Yellowstone Park in the US is a prime example: After wolves were reintroduced, aspen and willow trees flourished for the first time in decades.(自然资源保护主义者称狼为“关键物种”。这意味着,由于它们自然地控制着鹿和其他猎物的数量,它们的存在可以让森林和草原得以恢复。美国黄石公园就是一个最好的例子:狼被重新引入后,几十年来,白杨和柳树第一次茁壮成长)”可推知,作者提到黄石公园是为了举例说明狼在生态系统中扮演的重要角色,即它们如何通过控制猎物数量来促进森林和草原的恢复。故选B项。
33.推理判断题。根据第三段“But Denmark is not Yellowstone. Its countryside is a combination of farms, towns and highways with small, heavily managed nature reserves. Whether wolves can restore “wild balance” here is uncertain. Indeed, for some farmers and rural residents, wolves are not symbols of rewilding — they are real predators (捕食性动物), threatening livestock and livelihoods.(但丹麦并非黄石公园。这里的乡村是农田、城镇与高速公路交织的景象,其间点缀着少数管理严格的小型自然保护区。狼群能否在此重建“生态平衡”尚不可知。事实上,对于许多农民和乡村居民而言,狼并非荒野复苏的象征——它们是真实的掠食者,威胁着牲畜与生计)”可推知,丹麦的乡村主要由人类活动主导,而狼威胁着牲畜与生计,从而引发了冲突。故选D项。
34.推理判断题。根据第五段中“And in Denmark this summer, two young boys who had learnt the news spent hours up a tree, as they thought a “violent wolf” was nearby. The story grabbed headlines, only for it to turn out that the animal was actually a large domestic cat.(今年夏天,在丹麦,两个得知这个消息的小男孩在树上待了几个小时,因为他们以为附近有一只“凶猛的狼”。这个故事登上了头条,结果却发现这只动物实际上是一只大型家猫)”可推知,“violent wolf”的故事表明,恐惧往往可以超越事实,即使是没有根据的恐惧也能引起公众的强烈反应。故选A项。

36.前文“Yet perhaps if we brushed up our apology skills, we could help relieve the tension in our communities and our world (然而,或许如果我们能提升自己的道歉技巧,我们就能逐步缓解我们所在社区以及整个世界中的紧张局势)”提出提升道歉技巧可缓解社会紧张的观点,后文“They acknowledge the worth of the person we have wronged and the shared respect that still connects us, even when trust has been broken. (它们承认了我们对不起的人的价值,承认了即使信任被打破,我们仍然相互尊重。)”阐述道歉的作用,因此B项“Apologies matter as they bridge hurt and healing. (道歉很重要,因为它们连接了伤害与治愈。)”符合语境,肯定道歉的价值,承接首段的观点,并引出后文对道歉价值的进一步解释,其中的Apologies是后文They指代的对象。故选B。
37.前文“It turns out that the most powerful words in an apology are the simplest: “It was my fault.” (结果表明,在道歉中最具说服力的话语往往是那些最简单的:“这是我的错。”)”指出道歉中最有力量的话是承认错误,后文“It tells the other person that you see what happened clearly and that you are willing to own your part in it. (这向对方表明,你清楚地了解所发生的事情,并且愿意承担自己在其中应负的责任。)”解释承认错误这一行为的作用,因此E项“Taking responsibility breaks down defensiveness and excuses. (承担责任打破了防御心理和借口。)”符合语境,点明承认错误这一行为带来的心理效果,承接前文,后文是对其具体解释,其中的Taking responsibility是后文It指代的对象。故选E。
38.前文“It tells the other person that you see what happened clearly and that you are willing to own your part in it. (这向对方表明,你清楚地了解所发生的事情,并且愿意承担自己在其中应负的责任。)”解释承认错误这一行为的作用,后文“As Professor Lewicki points out, talk is… just words. That’s why the second most important part of an apology is the offer of repair. (正如Lewicki教授指出的那样,谈话只是说说而已。这就是为什么道歉中第二重要的部分就是提出修复措施。)”引用Lewicki教授的观点,指出修复在道歉中也很重要,因此A项“But responsibility alone is not enough. (但仅有责任是不够的。)”符合语境,和前文构成转折,引出后文对修复的论述。故选A。
39.前文“But interestingly, the least important piece was asking for forgiveness. Perhaps that’s because it’s not something you can demand. (但有趣的是,其中最不重要的部分是请求原谅。也许这是因为这并非是你能够强求的东西。)”指出请求原谅最不重要,并说明这不能被强求,因此F项“It’s a gift the other person chooses to give when they’re ready. (这是对方在准备好时选择给予的一份礼物。)”符合语境,解释请求原谅不能被强求的理由,承接前文,其中的It指代前文的forgiveness。故选F。
40.前文“We can’t control how the world acts, but we can live out the humbleness and responsibility that make harmony possible. (我们无法左右世界的运行方式,但我们可以秉持谦逊与责任感,从而促成和谐共处。)”总结个人可以秉持谦逊与责任感,后文“In a time when divisions feel unending, a good apology is not just words, it’s an act of repair for the fabric of our shared lives. (在这样一个分歧不断加剧的时代,一次恰当的道歉绝不仅仅是简单的言语表达,它更是一种修复我们共同生活结构的行为。)”升华道歉的意义,因此D项“A sincere apology releases anger and brings back connection. (真诚的道歉能释放愤怒,并重新建立连接。)”符合语境,说明前文做法的积极效果,引出后文的升华。故选D。

Many shared their own stories of feeling left behind in their careers after starting families, making her realize that her experience was not unique. “Your honesty made me feel less alone,” one comment read. Her former workmates recalled the good times they shared and encouraged her to rediscover the passion for presenting, reminding her of the charm that once made her a beloved figure. This outpouring of kindness not only lifted her spirits but also gave her the confidence to take the next step in reclaiming her professional identity.
Cawood soon found a renewed sense of purpose and established a live streaming program. Titled Mums& Dreams, this program centered on in-depth and heartfelt conversations. It specifically targeted a group of remarkable women who were going through the challenging journey of taking career breaks due to various life circumstances. Each episode, she invited guests to share stories, which moved viewers deeply. The program quickly gained popularity. Her genuine charm shone again, attracting a wide range of audience. The show not only gave her a new career but also became a supportive space for women to feel seen.
