Few writers create stories that every generation rediscovers. Robert Louis Stevenson achieved this twice. In Treasure Island, he perfected the thrilling sea adventure that still inspires films today. And Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde casts a long shadow over all tales of a divided self.
Behind Stevenson’s clear writing lay hard work and skills. His friend, novelist Henry James, admired his talent and felt lucky to know someone so skilled in the art of writing.
Stevenson not only wrote legends — he lived one. Born in Edinburgh in 1850, he struggled with lifelong illness but sailed across oceans and finally settled in Samoa, where he died at 44.
With his well - crafted books and charming personality, Stevenson attracted great loyalty. Seeking better health and escaping strict Scottish traditions, Stevenson traveled to France. There he fell deeply in love with Fanny Osbourne, a brave American who carried a gun and had already lived through adventures in the American West. They married when Stevenson was poor and sickly. Their marriage was a lasting love story, rare among literary marriages. Some believed Fanny could have led great social movements.
Travels took them to California and the French Riviera while Treasure Island made Stevenson famous. This classic began with Stevenson and Fanny’s son Lloyd drawing maps and inventing stories. Jekyll and Hyde was partly inspired by an awful dream.
In 1888, he began a Pacific journey on a ship. The family later settled in Samoa, where their home was large and cosy. Stevenson wrote passionately about Samoan life and supported its independence, angry that a few foreigners controlled so much.
Just as Samoa restored his health, Stevenson died suddenly from a stroke (中风). This biography, like Stevenson’s own style, is clear, lively, and warm. It shows why this “beautiful, bountiful being” remains so attractive. His literary treasure continues to shine today.
4.Why does the author mention Henry James’s admiration for Stevenson?
A.To criticize Stevenson’s writing style.
B.To emphasize Stevenson’s skill and influence.
C.To compare the writing techniques of the two novelists.
D.To show Stevenson was not widely recognized in his time.
5.What can we infer about Fanny Osbourne from the passage?
A.She had no interest in social activities.
B.She was a famous writer like Stevenson.
C.She hesitated to marry Stevenson because of his poor health.
D.She lived a life full of adventures before marrying Stevenson.
6.Which of the following can best describe Stevenson?
A.Charming and loyal.
B.Talented and legendary.
C.Determined and modest.
D.Ambitious and cautious.
7.What is the best title for this passage?
A.A Romantic Love Story.
B.Great Works of Stevenson.
C.The Adventure of a Lifetime.
D.Stevenson’s Literary Influence.

Achieving a sustainable balance between environmental protection and rural development is a pressing and complex global challenge. In China’s scenic Erhai Lake basin, this dilemma was severe for years. Intensive agricultural practices, while supporting local livelihoods, led to fertilizer runoff that threatened the lake’s water quality and biodiversity. The urgent need was to find a pathway that could reconcile economic needs with ecological integrity.
To address this, an innovative “Science and Technology Backyard” (STB) project was launched in Gusheng Village. Unlike top-down solutions, the STB model is a hands-on and comprehensive framework. It brings together agricultural experts, ecologists, and sociologists to live in the village, working side-by-side with farmers to analyze problems and co-create practical, green solutions.
The core methodology is grounded in collaboration and knowledge transfer. Scientists do not simply issue instructions; they engage in dialogue, understanding farmers’ difficulties and expectations. For instance, by jointly promoting precise fertilization techniques, constructing artificial wetlands to naturally purify runoff, and advising on eco - friendly crop selection, the STB provides a framework that allows farmers to increase their income while significantly reducing pollution and protecting the lake’s biodiversity.
The outcomes demonstrate the model’s effectiveness and strength. Farmers who adopt these practices report higher and more stable incomes due to higher-priced markets for greener produce. One villager noted, “My costs are lower, and my rice sells for more.” Meanwhile, monitoring data shows a clear trend of improving water quality in Erhai Lake, benefiting tourism and securing clean water for downstream communities.
In conclusion, the Erhai STB offers a practical blueprint for rural revitalization in ecologically sensitive areas. It moves beyond the false choice between economy and environment, proving that with respectful collaboration, scientific methodology, and enablement of local communities, villages can transition toward a future where prosperity and planetary health are mutually reinforcing goals. This model holds significant meaning for similar regions worldwide.
8.What does the underlined word “reconcile” probably mean in the first paragraph?
A.Balance. B.Replace. C.Ignore. D.Transfer.
9.What’s the main idea of the third paragraph?
A.It explains farmers’ trouble in accepting new methods.
B.It describes how farmers learn to apply modern technology.
C.It explains how artificial wetlands purify the lake water fully.
D.It introduces key means and practices of the creative project.
10.What is the main purpose of quoting the villager’s words?
A.To show their gratitude to the project.
B.To argue farmers should grow green rice.
C.To show the practical benefits of the project.
D.To stress the importance of better water quality.
11.What can be inferred about the STB model?
A.It is effective but costly.
B.It can achieve a win-win result.
C.It has gained global recognition.
D.It focuses more on eco-development.

The early bird gets the worm, as the old saying goes. And now a lot of birds around the globe are starting their days earlier than ever, because of unnaturally bright skies caused by light pollution.
Scientists already knew that light pollution affects birds. It can send migrating birds off course, and some observations have linked artificial lighting to unusual bird activity, including one recent report of American Robins feeding their babies in their nest at night.
Neil Gilbert and Brent Pease, from Southern Illinois University, took a comprehensive research based on previous studies, by analyzing millions of recordings of birdsong. The audio was collected by thousands of devices installed in backyards and other locations, mostly by birdwatchers and other wildlife enthusiasts. Their devices automatically register bird calls and use them to identify the species, mostly to let bird fans know what’s flitting through their yards.
“For these birds, effectively their day is almost an hour longer. They start singing about 20 minutes earlier in the morning and stop singing about 30 minutes later in the evening,” shows the research results. That’s the conclusion of a sweeping study that analyzed bird calls from over 500 bird species on multiple continents, giving researchers a new look at how human-created lights are affecting the daily lives of birds worldwide.
Gilbert and Pease realized that this data could be combined with satellite information about light pollution, as well as information about sunrise and sunset times. In the journal Science, their research reports that light pollution is extending birds’ daily routines by about 50 minutes on average.
What exactly that means for the birds isn’t known. “Maybe more light means birds have more time to find food, so they have more food to feed their babies,” says Pease. “Or, maybe the light has a terrible effect by disturbing sleep or seasonal hormonal cycles.”
The researchers also noticed that birds that rest in enclosed spaces, like a tree cavity, seemed less affected. They think that’s because the solid walls of the cavity or nesting box act as a barrier to artificial light.
12.How was the birdsong data primarily collected?
A.By scientists using specialized recording equipment.
B.Through devices installed by birdwatchers and enthusiasts.
C.From satellite images combined with audio recordings.
D.By automatically identifying species in laboratories.
13.How does the author introduce Neil Gilbert and Brent Pease’s study?
A.By defining key concepts. B.By making a comparison.
C.By providing statistics. D.By giving examples.
14.What effect does light pollution have on birds?
A.They change their migration destinations.
B.They keep singing until midnight.
C.They start vocalizing 30 minutes later.
D.They extend daily routines by about 50 minutes.
15.What might the text talk about next?
A.Specific ways to collect more accurate birdsong recordings.
B.Detailed experiments to test light pollution’s effect on birds.
C.Practical measures to reduce the effect of light pollution on birds.
D.Introductions to other animals that are also affected by light.

Most of us are pretty good at celebrating our big wins: moving house, getting married, or passing a driving test. But what about all the small wins along the way? 16 Taking notes of these wins keeps you motivated. So, here are four practical ways to celebrate your small wins.
Pause and slow down.
When you achieve a small win, it can be tempting to move on with the next task on your to-do list or display your progress. Why not practise pausing and slowing down? 17 It can in turn strengthen positive feelings and remind you that progress, however small, still counts.
Celebrate wins with understanding companions.
Sometimes, the small wins we’re proud of don’t get the recognition they deserve. Whether it’s nailing a tough presentation, finishing a challenging assignment, or simply sticking to a daily routine, these moments feel more meaningful when shared with someone who gets it. 18
Create a “win” wall.
19 For example, if you’re training for a marathon, which demands planning, commitment and regular weekly runs. Write down the date and details of every run on a whiteboard or large wall sheet. You could even buy running-themed stickers and get the thrill of popping one on your win wall after every run!
20
Take a photo, write a poem, or record a voice note to document your feelings when you reach your milestone. These snapshots become reminders on harder days and proof that progress is happening. Over time, you’ll build a collection of moments showing how far you’ve come.
A.Capture the moment.
B.Remind yourself of your daily wins.
C.After all, good interpersonal relationships make you relaxed.
D.So go to a trusted friend and turn a quiet win into shared joy.
E.This gives your brain time to absorb what you’ve accomplished.
F.Tracking small steps toward a long-term goal keeps you inspired to persist.
G.Life consists of little moments, and long-term goals are realized through tiny steps.

Due to my unhealthy eating habits, I became fatter and fatter after college. My good friend Anoush was a running enthusiast. So he advised me to lose weight by running. I didn’t agree at first until he promised to accompany me to run although he was busy with his work.
Seven years later, I got more serious about running. And I dreamed to participate in Boston Marathon. Anoush encouraged me to realize my dream. He also said he enjoyed running too and wanted to attend the same marathon with me. Every day we spared our time to practise hard and did about 2 marathons a year, during which time Anoush gave me much professional guidance and encouragement. And then one day, both of us qualified for the 2017 Boston Marathon. We were excited but unfortunately, several weeks before the marathon, we had a serious quarrel. Even I swore never to talk with him in the future.
The day came. Anoush and I stood at the starting line. He said, “Good luck! You will certainly finish the marathon.” Hearing his words, I looked at him, saying, “It’s none of your business.”
Then we started running. I had strong mental confidence by using positive self-talk when running distances, which has helped me finish 18 marathons. Soon, I passed Anoush.
But I struggled in the heat starting at mile 16. I felt most of my oxygen went to the muscle in my legs and less in my brain, which made me feel a bit lightheaded and fuzzy (迷迷糊糊的). I continually encouraged myself. “Just get to the finish, run bold, and you will win,” all phrases that I say to myself didn’t work any more.
Gradually I felt out of breath and had to slow down my pace. As I ran down the famous last stretch of the Boston Marathon on Boylston Street, I fell down on the ground with my legs moving like jello (果冻).

Looking into his faithful eyes. I realized that he was not cheating me and that he was really helping me. He just forgot the quarrel between us. I stood up and began to run with him.
When Anoush and I crossed the finish line, the audience at present applauded. Without any preparation, I was hugged by Anoush tightly. Suddenly, I felt regretful to break up with him. Then, I gathered my courage to say sorry to Anoush. “Thank you and I am so sorry to you, my dear friend. I should not have quarreled with you.” “Just forget it. You know, we are good friends.” Anoush said. I felt more than happy and lucky to have such a friend in my life. Though quarrels between friends could not be avoided, as long as we have him/her in our mind, we would be good friends forever.

6.Which of the following can best describe Stevenson?

What made China their ultimate destination was its attraction as a land of contrasts, 39 ancient civilization meets rapid modernization. However, their understanding of China was limited. As they put it, China was 40 (simple) the country that “produces many of the products we use daily”.
To prepare for the journey, Rene and Michel carefully mapped out their route, 41 (hope) to avoid surprises in a region unfamiliar to them. It soon became clear, though, that their worries had been 42 (necessary). China exceeded their expectations in every way.
They were amazed at the country’s diverse and stunning landscapes. Upon entering Gansu province, the view at the edge of the Tengger Desert — along with the breathtaking Danxia landforms near Lanzhou — 43 (leave) a lasting impression on them. They 44 (strike) by the modernity of urban life as well. “Everything was very different,” Michel said. “There were lots of new and modern facilities, 45 thus we had to learn all the new digital habits.”

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Just then, I felt that someone picked me up.
