Kelsey Pelham October 2025 Rating stars: ★★★★★
I come here regularly to meet with friends. It’s a cheerful space with lots of natural light, local art decorating the walls and books available in the lower room. As for the menu, there is definitely a spirit of innovation with new creations offered seasonally. Last thing I will comment on is that this coffee shop participates in community partnerships and really seems to practice local sourcing as much as possible, and they advertise special events and opportunities each month. A stand-out coffee shop we are blessed to have.
Aldo Lavalle November 2025 Rating stars: ★★★☆☆
Pretty good first experience overall. Spacious dining area, lots of sitting options, very homey-feel… Has WiFi, clearly displayed password. Ample (丰富的) menu. Parking can be a drawback at first glance until you come across the extra parking lot sign in the back. Since the actual parking lot near the building is super small, only a few spaces, there should be a clear sign at the front where it says “additional parking in the back”, or else you won’t know it’s there.
Overall would recommend.

I got talking to some friends recently about what kinds of entertainment we rely on when everything feels stressful. We talked about great movies and books. But we also talked about something I call “satisfying task video”.
A lot of this category is about cleaning. In particular, it involves watching people clean extremely dirty old carpets with power washers, going round after round until they uncover the carpet’s original color and pattern. It doesn’t have to be cleaning, though. There’s also a whole category of restoring old things, like an old cellphone. For viewers, watching these transformations brings a unique sense of comfort.
But perhaps nothing satisfies quite like the people on social media who clear drains (下水道). There is a gentleman who goes by “post 10” on social media, and some of his videos have millions of views. One of the things he does is go out into a spot where the roads are flooded and use tools to clear leaves away so it can drain. He says he has relevant training and does not recommend random people do this — floodwater is dangerous. I won’t try but I can tell you that when you watch a flooded street gradually empty, it is, in its way, thrilling.
Thrilling? Yes. For me, it creates this fundamental sense that doing work can matter. When you have the right tools and training to clear a flooded street, you can help your community and make things better for everyone. It’s also an optimistic mindset. If you clean off the rust (铁锈) and replace some parts, that laptop you gave up on might work. That beat-up purse might look beautiful again. More importantly, it takes work, it takes an enormous amount of patience, and it takes some willingness to look at something beyond repair and say, “Well, I’m going to try!” That can be a helpful reminder.
4. Which of the following activities makes for a “satisfying task video”?
A. Tidying up a dusty basement. B. Introducing the history of carpets.
C. Downloading cellphone applications. D. Displaying the structure of power washers.
5. How does the author feel about the video by “post 10”?
A. Doubtful. B. Confident. C. Scared. D. Impressed.
6. Why does the author mention the laptop and the purse?
A. To emphasize the simplicity of DIY. B. To highlight varieties of restored items.
C. To illustrate his attachment to old objects. D. To demonstrate a positive outlook on life.
7. What does the author try to convey in the passage?
A. Life is dependent on reminders. B. Environmental awareness is timeless.
C. Consistent labor yields results. D. Patience is the companion of wisdom.

For centuries, reading has meant engaging with the written word — whether on ancient scrolls (卷轴), hand-copied texts, or printed books. When we read, our eyes scan words, our brains process their meaning, and we form an understanding in our own head. But does reading always have to involve the eyes? Talking books — the earliest form of audiobooks — were created in the 1930s to help blind individuals access books. And now, millions of people listen to books every day.
At a cognitive (认知) level, listening and reading activate similar parts of the brain. When you hear a book, your brain still processes words, interprets meaning, and builds comprehension. However, there are differences: reading print requires decoding letters and forming mental images, while listening processes sound and depends on memory. This raises the question of whether audiobooks qualify as reading.
Actually, neither form is better. Some prefer the physical book feel, while others love the flexibility of audiobooks. Studies show that comprehension levels between audiobooks and print books are comparable — as long as the listener is fully engaged. However, factors like background noise, multitasking, and passive listening can affect reading effectiveness. If you’re simply letting an audiobook play in the background, you might not absorb it as well as if you were sitting with a paperback.
Still, hearing a narrator’s voice can actually enhance the reading experience — especially for dialogue-heavy stories. Many authors today even record their own voices for audiobooks, adding a personal touch.
The way people consume stories has changed throughout history. From oral storytelling to printed books to e-books and now audiobooks, every generation adapts to new forms. Beyond their original purpose of aiding individuals with disabilities, the rise of smart speakers, voice assistants, and mobile devices has allowed audiobooks to open doors for people with busy schedules, who can now multitask while enjoying a good book.
So, can we call someone who listens to audiobooks a reader?
√If reading is about comprehension, then yes.
√If reading is about accessing stories and information, then yes.
√If reading is about engagement and enjoyment, then yes.
8. What is the fundamental nature of traditional reading?
A. Understanding of word formation. B. Interaction with written text.
C Preservation of ancient culture. D. Preference for reading aloud.
9. Which factor affects reading effectiveness most?
A. The reading form. B. The reading task. C. The reader’s focus. D. The reader’s background.
10. What can be inferred from paragraph 5?
A. Audiobooks fit right into modern life. B. Reading offers a much-needed escape.
C. Every generation has its own reading list. D. The future of books lies in tech integration.
11. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Do Audiobooks Count as Reading? B. Are Audiobooks Better for Learning?
C. Are Printed Books Becoming Outdated? D. Does New Technology Redefine Reading?
D
Accurately monitoring a fishery — knowing how many and which fish species are being caught and what unlucky creatures are being dragged in as bycatch (误捕) along the way — has never been easy. Around the world, the job of keeping track of fishers has typically fallen to people called fisheries observers who temporarily join a fishing crew to watch and record. There to take scientific observations and report any rule breaking, these independent monitors often have a difficult and dangerous job. Unsafe working conditions are common.
In other words, relying on onboard human observers is a notably imperfect way to monitor fishing activity. Slightly cheaper and safer is fitting ships with cameras that record their catches. But a single trip can generate hundreds of hours of video recordings that someone still has to review to identify the animals flying past the camera.
In recent years, though, a potential solution has emerged. A startup in Canada, called OnDeck AI, is developing a computerized fisheries monitoring system that could dramatically change the video review process. The system is expected to recognize what it’s seeing in any setting, including recordings of varying quality captured by different types of cameras in changing weather. Alexander Dungate, founder of OnDeck AI, compares the difference between traditional AI models and OnDeck AI’s to the difference between memorizing the answers to a test and using more complex reasoning to figure out the answers. In other words, it is designed to identify a fish based on its coloring, shape and fin structure — even if the system has never seen it before. Still, OnDeck AI’s system is a work in progress, so it needs more tuning.
Bubba Cook, director of Sharks Pacific, notes the vast majority of fishing activity, including the bycatch of protected species, happens without oversight. Though human observers will still be necessary for things like tissue sampling, “the reality is,” says Cook, that “electronic monitoring coupled with AI review is the only way we’re going to get the level of observer coverage we need.”
12. Who are the “independent monitors” in paragraph 1?
A. Senior fishing crew managers. B. Local fishermen hired temporarily.
C. Onboard human observers. D. Reporters exposing illegal fishing.
13. What is the breakthrough of OnDeck AI according to Dungate?
A Its massive database. B. Its reasoning capacity.
C. Its customized structure. D. Its real-time feedback.
14. What does the underlined word “tuning” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Recognition. B. Exposure. C. Praise. D. Adjustment.
15. How does Cook view AI monitoring in protecting ocean resources?
A. Profitable. B. Irreplaceable. C. Unproven. D. Overestimated.

Caden, a little boy living with his parents and grandmother in a small village nestled in the valley of a beautiful mountain range, loved to play outside and explore the woods surrounding his home.
One day, while he was playing in the woods, he heard a faint whimpering (呜咽) sound coming from a nearby bush. Curious, he went to investigate it. Holding his breath and tiptoeing closer, he was looking through the leaves carefully, his eyes fixed on the slight movement in the bushes. Into his view came a small brown dog curled into a ball, trembling as it looked up at him with sorrowful eyes. Caden felt sorry for the puppy for he was certain that the tiny brown dog could only have been lost and separated from its family, or else abandoned by its former owner. After waiting for half an hour with no one in sight, he took the little puppy in his arms and brought it back to his home.
“Look what I found, Grandma,” he said happily as he showed the little puppy to his grandmother, who was sitting by the gate.
“Oh! The poor little thing looks so scared and cold,” Grandma said, looking at the puppy with a concerned expression. “We need to take care of it.”
Caden’s parents came outside when they heard their talk. “What’s going on, Caden?” His father asked with a smile, noticing the little puppy in his arms. “Who is this little fellow?”
“I found it in the woods,” Caden explained. “It’s lost, and we need to take care of it.”
His mother nodded in agreement. Noticing its brown fur, his father suggested naming it Brownie and the others clapped for it. The next day, Caden took the puppy for a comprehensive health checkup to ensure it was in good condition. After that, Caden spent all his time playing with Brownie and teaching it new tricks. However, as the days went by, the family began to notice something strange about the little puppy.

【答案】4. A 5. D 6. D 7. C

Accurately monitoring a fishery — knowing how many and which fish species are being caught, and what unlucky creatures are being dragged in as bycatch (误捕) along the way — has never been easy.
A. Its massive database. B. Its reasoning capacity.
C. Its customized structure. D. Its real-time feedback.
14. What does the underlined word “tuning” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Recognition. B. Exposure. C. Praise. D. Adjustment.
15. How does Cook view AI monitoring in protecting ocean resources?
A. Profitable. B. Irreplaceable. C. Unproven. D. Overestimated.
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. D 15. B

As time went on, Brownie began to trust its new family.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Whenever Brownie heard loud sound, it became anxious and frightened. It would tremble uncontrollably and hide under the bed or in a corner, refusing to come out until the noise stopped. Caden and his family were puzzled by this behavior and wondered what had caused such fear in the little puppy. They tried to comfort Brownie by speaking softly and petting it gently, but it took a while for the puppy to calm down. They realized that Brownie must have had a traumatic experience in the past that made it sensitive to loud noises.
As time went on, Brownie began to trust its new family. It gradually became more relaxed and playful, wagging its tail happily whenever Caden or his family members approached. It no longer hid at the sound of loud noises but instead looked to them for reassurance. Brownie also started to learn new tricks quickly and became a beloved member of the family. Caden was overjoyed to see Brownie thriving in its new home and knew that they had given the little puppy a second chance at a happy life.
