Dad read me a speech recently. He wanted to help me find answers to all my questions. Ever since I was very young. I’ve asked “What should I do?” many times. I just didn’t want to make mistakes. Maybe it was because I was a little scared to take my first step by myself.
During my middle school years, I changed. It was when I decided to try for the lead in Beauty and the Beast without asking Dad for advice. I didn’t mind that I would have to memorize lines and movements (动作). Also, I was willing to take the risk of failing.
On the day of the audition (试镜), I kept telling myself, “If you think you can’t do it the right way, just don’t go.” My hands were shaking so badly that I couldn’t say clear words. I wasn’t certain whether people would hear me.
But something happened. When I opened my mouth, I found the sound was loud, powerful and sweet! And I even reached the high notes that I’d never reached! It was fantastic! I was trying bravely even though I might fail. But I didn’t. That audition wasn’t the end of the problems that stopped me from trying, but it was an important part of the process of growing.
That day, I realized that if I want to enjoy my life completely, I have to push myself. Because my parents, friends and teachers don’t always have the answer to “What should I do?”
Now, I take these small chances every day. For example, I share my opinions in class discussions, I ride my horse to jump over a three-foot height and so on.
“Life is learning to handle something unexpected,” Dad stated (陈述) in his speech. But I now know that the plan I make for my life will become easier and easier as I take more chances.

Can you show me who your idol (偶像) is? Unlike many of my classmates, my idol is not a film star, a famous writer or a sportsman. My idol is my dad.
When I was only a five-year-old boy, I was seriously ill and needed attention all the time. My mother and father both worked and my grandparents lived far away. “Maybe I can stop working to stay at home and look after our son,” Dad said to Mom, knowing how much she loved her job.
Many men in this situation would want their wives to stay with their children, but my dad always thinks about others before himself. This made me start to respect him.
My dad later took a job.
“Dad, why do you work at night?” I asked.
“I choose the job so that I will only be out of the house when you are sleeping,” he replied.
Since then, my dad has helped and supported me in everything I do. I still remember when I was learning to ride a bike. My dad ran behind me and held the back of the bicycle so that I would not fall. I felt so safe because I knew he was near. Soon, I was able to ride by myself.
My family is not rich, and we do not own a big house or an expensive car. But he has shown me that something is more important than money. My dad gives me his time. Although he now works hard every day and is often very busy, he always makes time to stay with me. He has taught me that I can achieve anything if I really work hard on it.

Zigong, in Sichuan Province is home to Chinese lanterns. Zigong lanterns are known as the best lanterns in the world. The Zigong Lantern Festival dates back to the Tang Dynasty. The festival has rapidly developed with traditional culture and modern technologies, becoming a shining name card for Chinese culture to go out into the world.
“Making a huge lantern requires 17 steps,” said Wan Songtao, an inheritor (传承人) of Zigong lantern-making. “Each step is finished by a team instead of a single maker,” Wan added. A special kind of lantern called Sundial, made by Wan’s team, for example, took about 80 makers over 50 days to complete the whole process. Unlike the lanterns in other places, Zigong lanterns use modern technologies such as AI, engineering, and holography (全息摄影术). They are a perfect all-in-one use of lights, sounds and movements.
What’s more, the theme of the lantern can be chosen in different ways. “Anything that is designed on a lantern can make a wonderful show, and everyone is encouraged to turn their ideas into real works,” said Zhang Fanglai, a leading researcher at the Colorful Lantern Museum of China. And the rich themes of Zigong lanterns show the spirit of creativity and warmth from the bottom of the local people’s heart.
The government encourages local people to learn lantern-making widely. Without doubt, the Zigong Lantern Festival’s success is the local tradition of pulling together. Zigong lanterns are getting more and more popular. Driven by the collective efforts of the whole city, they have reached over 80 countries. It’s believed that Zigong lanterns will reach every corner of the world in the future.

38. What did the writer decide to do during her middle school years without asking Dad for advice?
