“Just start writing down anything.” It old myself. My fingers then responded by typing a sentence then two. The words flowed from my fingertips as if they had been waiting for this moment. I found myself absorbed in the process, letting my thoughts and emotions guide my review. And soon enough, I had a complete draft before me. As I read through what I had written, a sense of accomplishment washed over me. It wasn’t perfect, but I captured the essence of the novel. With a deep breath, I hit the “send”button. Then, all I could do was wait. Meanwhile, I felt worried that it wouldn’t be accepted by the editor.
It wasn’t long before the editor replied. “Hi, Carol. I did a quick read through of your review. It looks great the editor excitedly. Upon hearing these words, all my doubts were pushed aside and replaced by newfound confidence. From that day forward, I embraced more opportunities to write reviews. It was a journey of growth and self-discovery, one that taught me the power of stepping out of my comfort zone and trusting in my own abilities. And so, my humble beginnings as an occasional poet and library assistant paved the way for a new chapter in writing journey. I’m grateful for the initial chance the editor gave me.

Earth Day Contest in Chelsea, Michigan
On a sunny spring afternoon at Lyndon Park North, Chelsea residents gathered to celebrate Earth Day and shared ideas for a more sustainable future.
“Einstein once said that imagination is more powerful than intellect,” said event organizer Marijo Grogan. “Our Earth Day Contest exemplifies how collective imagination and wisdom can create a vision and motivation for action.”
Participants submitted thirty unique ideas covering topics from composting (堆肥) to tool-sharing libraries. Winners were announced at the event.
•First Place went to Shana Weddington for her concept of a Community Compost & Seed Library — a mobile unit that could move through neighborhoods, making composting and gardening resources accessible to more residents. Weddington also received an honorable mention for proposing a community garden to grow herbs for medical treatments and an aid network.
•Second Place was awarded to Jackie Popma, who envisioned community composting options for kitchen waste. Popma also earned an honorable mention for suggesting low-interest loans to support energy-efficient home improvements.
•Third Place went to Brendan Bradley for his “Turning Trash to Treasure” proposal, which highlighted the value of composting food waste. Bradley also received an honorable mention for his idea of repurposing wood waste.
Other honorable mentions included:

A bus stop in Fowey, England, has been receiving artistic makeovers from creative locals for two decades. Known as the Pretty Bus Stop on Lankelly Lane in Cornwall, it was given its first transformation by Jane Tinsley after some damage.
Over the next twenty years the stop has been decorated in a variety of themes, including a tea room, a yacht (帆船) race, a library, and even an Elvis-themed stop at one point Volunteers regularly step forward to give it a fresh look, especially during the winter.
Sarah Worne, an artist who has been involved since 2021, recently created a plant-themed design called Thyme to Stop, which features real and painted pots of seedlings and plants, giving the stop the feel of a greenhouse. “It was cold coming into February and everybody needed a bit of warmth,” Sarah said. “This design makes it feel cosy while people wait for the bus.”
Sarah enjoys the project because it brings joy to others. “I always like keeping busy and doing things that make people smile, just for fun.” she added.
The bus stop even has a dedicated Facebook page, with more than 2,700 followers, showcasing its many designs over the years. “We love getting the community involved. For example, I have challenged Fowey River Lions to do a design and they are having a go this year at Easter, which has led neighbors to come together, discuss ideas, and work towards a common goal,” Sarah said.
Sarah has thought about decorating other bus stops but hasn’t yet taken the time to talk to the owners. “The bus stop in Fowey is actually owned by the town council. You do have to workout who owns the bus stops and I haven’t gone down that route — but I certainly got my eve on a couple of other bus stops that could do with brightening up.”

Speaking more than one language may benefit children’s executive (执行的) function — especially those with autism spectrum (自闭症谱系) disorder (ASD), a recent analysis suggests.
The study, published in Autism Research, looked at 116 children aged 7 through 12. Of those, 53 had autism spectrum disorder and 63 did not, though 4 children were later excluded. Twenty-one of the children with ASD spoke more than one language, and 35 of the typically developing children were multilingual (讲多种语言的). Most of the multilingual children spoke English and Spanish, though some spoke Portuguese, Hebrew, French, Japanese or Bulgarian in addition to English.
The researchers tested the children’s executive function abilities and asked parents to fill out surveys assessing autism behaviors such as viewpoint taking — the ability to understand viewpoints other than one’s own — and social communication.
The multilingual children all demonstrated better executive function than their counterparts who spoke just one language, regardless of whether they were on the autism spectrum. But the effect was more salient in multilingual kids with ASD.These kids had much better self-control than those who only spoke one language and had ASD.
The research also found a “direct and indirect association between multilingualism and viewpoint taking.” This could be because people who speak more than one language must assess social signals to decide which language to speak or that their knowledge of more than one language comes with a higher ability to understand language itself, the researchers said.
Multilingual children’s executive functions could be improved by the need to choose the right language to speak, the researchers write. “If you have to balance two languages, you have to control one in order to use the other,” said Lucina Uddin, who was a professor at the University of Miami during the research. “That’s the idea. The ability to stop yourself from doing something might be strengthened by knowing two languages.”
Encouraging multilingualism at home could benefit kids with autism spectrum disorders, the researchers conclude, and could even provide a “natural intervention” for some types of executive function.

Whenever a solar eclipse(日食)occurs, life seems to stand still for a brief moment. Humans watch the sky, animals display odd behaviors, but what about plants? It turns out that plant life has its own way of dealing with this astronomical event. A new study has shown that trees react to solar eclipses and even anticipate them hours in advance, synchronizing(使同步)their bioelectrical signals in preparation.
In the study, researchers focused on the electrome of trees—this network includes the bioelectrical signals they generate to communicate and adjust responses to environmental changes. To see the electrome in action, the researchers measured bioelectrical signals in spruce trees located in the Dolomites during a partial solar eclipse. They finished this by setting up a system of sensors that could continuously collect data from the trees during the event.
The data revealed that trees’ signals became more synchronized before and during the solar eclipse. Hours before the eclipse, the trees were able to anticipate the astronomical event and change their bioelectrical behavior to prepare for upcoming effects like drops in sap(汁液)flow.
This was most prominent in older trees, which may have gained such impressive anticipatory abilities by growing accustomed to eclipse patterns over their long lifespan. After the older trees prepared themselves for the eclipse, the rest of the trees followed suit, demonstrating a close connection shared by the whole forest.
“The revelation that trees can band together to prepare for eclipses highlights the critical importance of protecting older forests, which serve as a guard of an ecosystem by preserving and spreading invaluable ecological knowledge,” said lead author Monica Gagliano.
Researchers aren’t certain about the specific clues that enabled the trees to anticipate the solar eclipse. It’s possible, however, that trees’ behavior may be a result of gravitational forces caused by the positioning of the Moon and Sun in the sky. Additional details on the power of trees—especially their capacity to anticipate and adapt to environmental changes—have yet to be uncovered, which is another reason why researchers are stressing the importance of preserving trees.
32.What did the researchers do in the study?
A.They controlled the side effects on trees. B.They employed sensors for data collection.
C.The measured various tree species’ signals. D.They tracked the tested trees after the event.
33.What does the underlined word “prominent” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Dangerous. B.Temporary. C.Obvious. D.Complicated.
34.Which of the following shows the researchers’ opinion?
A.Older forests are in great danger. B.It’s very necessary to protect trees.
C.The cause of trees’ behavior is certain. D.Environmental changes are unpredictable.
35.What is the main idea of the text?
A.An astronomical event is threatening trees. B.Trees’ anticipatory capacity remains stable.
C.Forests serve as a guard of an ecosystem. D.Trees communicate to prepare for a solar eclipse.

Knowledge management is one of the most vital aspects of workplace progress. When employees fail to get access to the knowledge for completing their tasks, the organization suffers. Here are four strategies you can use to encourage your employees to share knowledge in the workplace.
· 36 While you expect knowledge sharing in your workplace, not everyone is open to it. It’s helpful to make the workplace a place where sharing knowledge can become second nature for employees. 37 These can comprise increased interactions, team-building exercises, quizzes and collaborations. Even with office tasks, assign groups to work together and share knowledge.
·Recognize and reward knowledge sharing. Positive reinforcement (强化) works everywhere. 38 Try to reward employees who are making an effort to share knowledge. This will show other people that sharing and helping people understand concepts is rewarded and encouraged, thereby motivating more people to do it. You can give the rewards after they do the task or at the end of an office year.
·Manage communication barriers between employees. Effective communication between employees is a must for the smooth working of an organization. 39 When the communication barriers between employees are removed, knowledge sharing will be a simple process. You can establish an online platform which facilitates easy communication.
·Lead by example. If you don’t follow knowledge-sharing systems, it will be challenging for the rest of the organization to do it. Therefore, you must lead by example and show that it’s equally important for everyone to share knowledge. Whenever there’s a knowledge-sharing activity, you should be the first one to begin because, ultimately, your knowledge is being passed on to employees. 40
A.Organizations are no exception.
B.Come up with a contribution campaign.
C.Create a knowledge-sharing environment.
D.For this, you can include different activities in day-to-day tasks.
E.Employees should naturally feel the need to communicate with others.
F.If there are barriers to it, employees will get discouraged from sharing knowledge.
G.The more you get involved in such activities, the more willing employees will be to do it.

87.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One early afternoon, when I finished the day’s work inside the children’s library, an editor of regional magazine called me.
Besides my job in the library, I was a part-time writer. I was so part-time that I would never have called myself a writer, even though many of my poems had been published in literary magazines across Canada. A few months ago, I noticed that this particular regional magazine occasionally published poetry, so I took a chance and sent them a letter along with some of my best poems for their consideration.
The instant I picked up the phone, the editor greeted me excitedly, “Hello Carol!I received your letter and I was wondering if you might be interested in reviewing (评论) books for us. You’ll have a month to write your review, and we do pay.”
Reviewing books? I had never written a review before, at least not the kind that would appear in a magazine with many readers. Sure, I had written short and enthusiastic summaries of books in the library to engage our users with newly acquired titles, but they were always positive assessments since I only focused on books I liked. This request was something entirely different.
Could I do it? I questioned whether I had the skills and the right to review others’ work. After all, I was only an occasional poet and library assistant. My spirits sank when they didn’t even mention my poetry; instead, they wanted me to review someone else’s writing.
“I have a novel here. It’s by a well-known author. Would you like me to send it to you?” the editor asked. Suddenly, my heart whispered, “You can do it and say ‘yes’ now!” “Yes,” I then said. The book arrived soon. I felt anxious. Again, my heart said, “Take it one step at a time. First, read the book.” So, I did. I read it carefully and discovered I enjoyed the story.
Now what? I sat at my computer, with fingers frozen. “Think! Think! Think! What are you going to say?” I whispered and remained still for several minutes.
