Sculptor Jamie Thomas certainly lives by the belief that "One man's trash()is
another man's treasure. The New Zealand artist creates striking animal sculptures from
steel, often working with recycled materials. He's particularly fond of using discarded
horseshoes, which he shapes and polishes into everything from horses to dolphins.
Recently,he's acquired over 6 metric tons of horseshoes thanks to a farmer who has
been collecting them for over 20 years. These, together with the aluminum()race
plates also given by the farmer, are keeping him quite busy.Luckily,Thomas enjoys
sharing his creative process and often posts videos on the website.
In them,we see everything from drawing the initial shape and creating a steel frame
(that will hold the horseshoes to firing, operating, and polishing the metal into
shape. The results are extraordinary and speak to the real creative possibilities of using
metal to create fine art.For Thomas, who began his artistic creation using the horseshoes
that are still his primary medium, knowing that he's working sustainably is important.
"I like the added challenge of using steel-it gives more magical factor when people see the
final result, plus it has a feel-good zero footprint aspect to it,"he tells My Modern Met."I have
a good piece of mind knowing I'm doing my part for the environment."
In fact,Thomas is so passionate about his approach to art that he hopes others will
follow in his footsteps and start using horseshoes creatively.
"I'm currently working on making lessons to show people how to make horseshoe
sculptures,he shares."Starting from basic right through to expert level,my aim is to
show people exactly how to make everything you see me make.

Dubai is one of the fastest growing cities in the world.Just in the first quarter of
2024,the city welcomed 25,700 new residents.Aware of the needs of a growing
population,URB,an urban planning and development firm, recently released the Dubai
Green Spine project, which would turn one of the city's major main roads into a
"multifunctional public place"as a way to improve all city residents'quality of life.
Known as the "World's Greenest Highway",Dubai Green Spine will transform
Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road (E311)into a multimodal corridor().The plan
envisions bike paths,walking trails,community conveniences,commercial and
recreational spaces,and,especially,a line of 1000%electric trams(有轨电车)supported
by 300 MW of clean solar energy,as well as space for 1 million trees in interconnected
green areas along the urban corridor.
"The Dubai Green Spine isn't just about transport;it's about transforming how cities
function, making them more livable and human-centric,"states Baharash Bagherian,
CEO of URB.He adds,“It challenges conventional infrastructure norms(基础设施规
)proving that our streets can do more than facilitate car traffic;they can significantly
enhance quality of life. This project exemplifies the lasting impact the thoughtful,
integrated urban planning can have on a city's health.
This massive infrastructure project doesn't aim to fix all the challenges posed by
Dubai's growth, but rather alleviate many of them with a sustainable approach. The
parks that frame and cover the 64-kilometer route are meant to reduce the heat island
effects by providing shade and air, while the walking and bike paths will connect
neighborhoods to enhance"20-minute cities"where every need can be met by a 20-minute
walk. The plan also proposes the construction of cultural and commercial centres.
The Dubai Green Spine is connected with the city's Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan,
which anticipates the city's growth to nearly 8 million residents.By providing
infrastructure, with people from all walks of life and many of Dubai's extending areas in
mind, the plan combines urban development with an environmental effort to help a city
with unique weather challenges due to its hot dry climate.
28.Why was Dubai Green Spine project released?
A.To meet the requirements of its growing residents.
B.To get more space for making more constructions.
C.To make only vehicles accessible on the highways.
D.To prevent more people getting into the crowded city.
29.What can we know from Bagherian's words about the Dubai Green Spine project?
A.It makes Dubai more humanized.

D.It enables streets to facilitate more car traffic.
30.What does the underlined word "alleviate"in Paragraph 4 mean?

In all probability, music has played an important role in the life cycle of humans
perhaps even before we could speak.Significant evidence has been discovered that very
early man developed primitive flutes()from animal bones and used stones and wood
as musical instruments.
As we move forward in musical time,we begin to enter the Middle Ages which can
be generally agreed to extend the period from around 500AD up until the mid-fifteenth
century.By this time music was a dominant art in churches, practised by kings to ordinary
people alike. It was during this extended period of music that the sound of music became
increasingly familiar. This is partly due to the development of musical notation(),
much of which has survived and allows us a window back into this fascinating time.
From the written music that survives from the churches and other important accounts
of musical practices,it's possible to collect an image of an energetic culture.Throughout
the Middle Ages, the music slowly began to adopt ever more neatly-made structures and
devices that produced works of great beauty and devotion.
Hildegard von Bingen and Perotin pioneered many of the musical forms we still
recognise today.Alongside these important forms came the madrigal (that often
reflects the moods and feelings of the people of the time. Its wonderful form is both
attractive and delightful.
Instruments developed in accordance with the composer's imaginations. Many
instruments accompanied the Middle Ages'music, although it was still the human voice
that dominated many of the compositions.Towards the close of the high medieval period,
we find the emergence of instrumental pieces in their own right, which in turn covers the
way for many musical forms in the following period:The Renaissance.
Before leaving this period of music it is important to mention the Troubadours and
the Trouveres. These travelling storytellers and musicians covered vast distances on their
journeys across Europe and further into Asia. They told stories, sang folk songs and
perhaps most importantly, brought with them influences from far and wide that perfectly
connected with the western musical cultures.
32.How may people learn about the music in Middle Ages?
A.By the preserved musical notation.
B.By the dominant art in churches.
C.By the familiar sound of music.
D.By the development of churches.
33.What's the feature of musical forms in the Renaissance?
A.The human voice dominated compositions.
B.The composer's imaginations developed rapidly.
C.The instrumental pieces without human voice developed.
D.The instruments are similar to those from the Middle Ages.
34.What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A.The Renaissance had a great influence on music.
B.Music became quite popular in Europe and Asia.
C.Travelling musicians lived a hard life in early years.
D.The impact of the Troubadours was restricted to Europe.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Middle Ages'Music
B.The Early Development of Music
C.Influences of Music in the World
D.Important Forms of Modern Music

The Unexpected Hero
At Sunnydale High, the final bell rang through the halls, signaling the end of
another school day.But for Jake Simmons,a junior with average grades and no
extracurricular fame, this day was about to become unforgettable.
Jake was lost in thought, wandering through the halls, when he noticed a small
crowd gathering. It was the school's math whiz(),Lisa,surrounded by her usual
friends. She was anxiously searching for her math project, the one that was to be
submitted for the national competition.
“Ican't believe this!I left it right here,and now it's gone!”Lisa exclaimed,her
voice shaking.
A teacher nearby overheard the chaos and announced,"Whoever finds Lisa's project
will be rewarded with extra credits for the year.
A whisper spread through the crowd as students were leaving, eager to find the
missing project and claim their reward.
Jake, however, wasn't interested in the reward. He was caught by the concern on Lisa's
face.He decided to help her,not for recognition, but because it was the right thing to do.
As the school emptied,Jake began his search. He retraced Lisa's steps, from the
computer lab to the library, and even the cafeteria. No sign of the project.Just as he was
about to give up,he noticed a flash of light reflecting from the narrow gap between the
library shelves. There it was,the project, almost buried under the weight of forgotten
books.Jake picked it up,dusted it off,and rushed to classroom to put it on Lisa's desk.
The next day,the moment Jake arrived at school,he found Lisa was already
surrounded by a group of students, including the school's star athlete,Mike, who was
holding the very project.Mike was showing off,"Found it in the gym.Guess it was left
there by mistake.”
But Jake knew the truth. He'd found the project in the library. Before he could say
anything,Lisa's grateful smile and the admiration in her eyes as she thanked Mike made
him hesitate.

1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
